Nintendo has not ignored Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: it released a visually enhanced Switch version in 2024, twenty years after the GameCube original. But whether that amounts to respect depends on the standard. If respect means preserving and making the game available with thoughtful updates, Nintendo’s record supports that case. If it means ongoing promotion or continued support beyond a remake, the official record cited here does not establish it.
What does “respect” mean in this case?
“Nintendo doesn’t respect the game” is an opinion, not a documented fact about the company’s intentions. A useful way to assess it is to separate observable actions from assumptions about how Nintendo feels. Here, respect can mean preserving the original, bringing it to a current platform, improving the experience, and continuing to promote or support it afterward.
On the first three measures, Nintendo’s actions are concrete: the company announced an enhanced Switch edition and released it in 2024 with listed presentation and convenience updates. The official sources cited here do not establish what Nintendo’s internal valuation of the game is, or whether it has an ongoing support or promotion plan beyond that release.

What Nintendo actually did for the game
Nintendo announced the Switch edition in its September 14, 2023 Nintendo Direct, describing it as “a visually enhanced version of the Nintendo GameCube game Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.” The edition arrived on May 23, 2024. Nintendo’s US listing frames that release as twenty years after the original GameCube game, which belongs to 2004.

That timeline matters: in 2026, the original is 22 years old, while the Switch edition is two years old. The “22 years later” framing refers to the age of the original, not a 22-year gap between the original and the Switch release.
The game was developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo, according to Nintendo UK’s product page. The Switch edition is a remake or enhanced version in Nintendo’s framing, not a sequel or a straight port.

What changed in the Switch edition
Nintendo’s US digital listing names revamped graphics, an updated soundtrack, updated quick-travel pipes, and a Partner Ring for switching partner characters. Those are the specific changes supported by Nintendo’s product description.

- Navigation: updated quick-travel pipes.
- Partner management: a Partner Ring lets players swap characters quickly.
Nintendo’s listings do not establish exact resolution or frame rate, a full content-by-content comparison, or whether any changes were made to localization. It would be misleading to treat those details as confirmed either way.

Is the game available now, and who made it?
Nintendo lists both a digital Switch version and a physical Nintendo Switch edition. The physical listing gives the release date as May 23, 2024, credits Nintendo as publisher, and specifies one-player play with TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. Nintendo also says the game is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 and that behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch; that is Nintendo’s product-page statement, not an independent performance test.
For the platform and creator details: Nintendo credits Intelligent Systems as developer and Nintendo as publisher. Nintendo’s UK page carries the line “© 2004 Nintendo. Game developed by INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS.”

Does a remake prove Nintendo respects the game?
It proves that Nintendo chose to bring the game back in a revised form and make it available on Switch. The listed updates also show that the company did more than simply relaunch the original unchanged. That is meaningful evidence of preservation and renewed access.
It does not prove a broader claim about Nintendo’s priorities. A remake alone cannot tell us how the company values the game relative to other series entries, whether it will receive further promotion or support, or why Nintendo made particular decisions. The official pages establish a substantial rerelease, not the company’s private attitude.

So the most defensible conclusion is narrower than the title’s accusation: Nintendo did give The Thousand-Year Door a modern, updated release, but the available official record does not demonstrate ongoing attention beyond that release. Calling that “respect” depends on whether a well-documented remake is enough for you.
