For most newcomers, play Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door first. It is the straightforward choice if “Paper Mario” suggests a traditional role-playing game: turn-based battles, recruitable partners and an adventure built around RPG progression.

Choose Super Paper Mario first instead if you mainly want platforming, action and perspective puzzles. Its defining feature is switching between 2D and 3D views to reveal routes, secrets and ways to overcome enemies. You do not need to finish The Thousand-Year Door to understand Super Paper Mario; your preferred mechanics and the platform you can use matter more than story order.

The short answer

This is a mechanics-based recommendation, not a claim that one game is objectively superior. If you only have access to one compatible platform, that practical limitation can decide before genre preference does.

What each game is trying to be

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is the RPG-first option

Nintendo’s Switch listing presents The Thousand-Year Door as Mario’s journey for the Crystal Stars. The 2024 Switch release is a remake, with revamped graphics, an updated soundtrack, updated quick-travel pipes and a Partner Ring for changing characters. Its battle system retains the original game’s turn-based structure, according to the Nintendo Switch review source.

That combination gives you a predictable rhythm: explore, enter a battle, choose actions in turns, use your available partners and continue the story through an RPG-centered adventure. If you are approaching the series because you want the format associated with classic Paper Mario, this is the safer first purchase and the clearest introduction.

Super Paper Mario is an action-platformer with RPG elements

Super Paper Mario is the series’ third game and originally launched for Wii in Europe on September 14, 2007. Nintendo describes it as a blend of platforming and RPG elements rather than a conventional RPG sequel.

Mario can flip the view between 2D and 3D. That change exposes paths, secrets and enemy weaknesses that are not visible from one perspective alone. Luigi, Peach and Bowser become playable, while Pixls provide additional abilities. The result is a game in which movement, timing, level navigation and recognizing when to change dimensions matter more than selecting commands from a traditional turn queue.

The decisive difference: battles and moment-to-moment play

What you do in The Thousand-Year Door

The game keeps the earlier Paper Mario battle model: encounters use turn-based decisions, with Mario and partners acting within an RPG framework. The attraction is not simply that battles pause between turns; it is that combat is part of a broader role-playing structure involving exploration, partners and a story designed around that format.

  • Choose this style if you like planning actions before enemies respond.
  • Choose it if partner characters are an important part of how you want to play.
  • Choose it if you expect Paper Mario to function primarily as an RPG rather than as a platform game.

What you do in Super Paper Mario

Nintendo intentionally moved away from the earlier games’ turn-based battle system. The producer and director interview explains that the team wanted an RPG-like storyline while avoiding the traditional RPG battle format, because the dimension-switching concept suited action/adventure play better.

Enemies and obstacles are therefore handled in the flow of platforming and dimension changes. You jump, move through stages, switch perspective to expose solutions and use the abilities supplied by different playable characters and Pixls. If you find menu-driven, turn-by-turn combat less appealing, this is the more natural first game.

Why the 2D/3D flip matters

The 2D/3D switch is not a cosmetic camera trick. In one view, a stage can look like a conventional side-scrolling route; in the other, hidden depth can reveal a path, a secret or a way around an obstacle. Nintendo’s official descriptions frame the mechanic as a way to find routes, uncover secrets and exploit enemy weaknesses.

That design changes what “progress” feels like. In The Thousand-Year Door, the central question is often which RPG action or partner is appropriate for the encounter. In Super Paper Mario, the key question is often whether the current perspective is concealing the answer. Players who enjoy spatial reasoning and experimenting with the environment should treat this mechanic as the main reason to choose Super Paper Mario, not as a small side feature.

Do you need to play one before the other?

No. The official descriptions reviewed for these games do not establish a required story order. Super Paper Mario has its own premise, cast and gameplay explanation, so you can start there without completing The Thousand-Year Door.

Playing The Thousand-Year Door first is still sensible for a newcomer who wants to understand the traditional Paper Mario formula before trying a deliberate format change. It gives you the RPG baseline against which Super Paper Mario feels unusual. Conversely, starting with Super Paper Mario does not lock you out of the RPG style later; it simply introduces the series through its platform-action branch.

Platform and availability considerations

Game Platform information established by the official listings Important date or limitation
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Nintendo Switch remake Released May 23, 2024. The remake includes updated graphics, soundtrack, quick-travel pipes and a Partner Ring.
Super Paper Mario Originally a Wii game; Nintendo also records historical Wii U download availability European Wii release: September 14, 2007. Wii U and 3DS eShop purchases ended March 27, 2023.

Do not treat Super Paper Mario as a current Switch release. The official material used here identifies it as a Wii title and documents its former Wii U availability, not a Switch edition. If you want to play on a current Nintendo platform without relying on legacy hardware, The Thousand-Year Door is the practical choice.

Choose by the kind of player you are

Start with The Thousand-Year Door if you are new to Paper Mario

“Paper Mario” commonly sets an RPG expectation: turn-based encounters, partners and an adventure in which combat and exploration are connected. The Switch remake is the most accessible way, among these two games, to start with that structure. Its updated presentation and convenience changes preserve the RPG identity while making the release a current-platform option.

Start with Super Paper Mario if you are primarily a platform-game player

If your favorite part of Mario games is jumping through stages, reading level layouts and finding alternate routes, Super Paper Mario may be the better introduction even though it is not the traditional battle-system choice. Its action-led design was made to serve the dimension mechanic, so you are not compromising on the game’s central idea by choosing it first.

Start with Super Paper Mario if perspective puzzles are your main draw

The ability to reveal a different route by switching dimensions is the game’s signature hook. Players who enjoy visual puzzles, hidden passages and testing how a level changes from another viewpoint should prioritize it over an RPG-first introduction.

Start with The Thousand-Year Door if partners are essential to your ideal adventure

Partners are part of the RPG structure in The Thousand-Year Door, and the Switch remake adds a Partner Ring for switching characters. Super Paper Mario also offers a varied playable cast and Pixls, but those abilities serve its action-platforming design rather than the partner-centered turn-based format.

Let hardware decide if your library is limited

Genre preference cannot help if the required system is unavailable. The reviewed official listing places The Thousand-Year Door on Nintendo Switch. Super Paper Mario is associated with Wii and historical Wii U distribution, and Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS eShops stopped accepting purchases on March 27, 2023. How the two games feel as introductions

Your first game establishes what you think the Paper Mario name means. Starting with The Thousand-Year Door teaches the series through its recognizable RPG loop: story scenes lead into exploration, exploration leads into turn-based encounters, and partners are integrated into the way you approach those encounters. The remake’s presentation updates do not change that identity. For a player coming from other role-playing games, that continuity makes the opening choice easy to understand.

Starting with Super Paper Mario creates a different expectation. The game still supplies an RPG-like storyline, but its stages ask you to move, jump and inspect the relationship between two dimensions. Its cast changes are functional as well as narrative: Luigi, Peach and Bowser are playable, and Pixls add abilities that support the action design. It is therefore a better first impression for someone who values movement and level discovery over command selection.

Neither route makes the other confusing. The games share a broad paper-themed Mario identity, yet Nintendo presents them as distinct designs. You can recognize Super Paper Mario as an experiment without having played every earlier entry, and you can enjoy the remake of The Thousand-Year Door without treating Super Paper Mario as a required follow-up.

Questions to ask before buying or starting

  • Do I want my decisions to happen in turns? If yes, begin with The Thousand-Year Door. If no, Super Paper Mario removes that conventional battle structure.
  • Will I enjoy looking for a solution from another viewpoint? If that sounds more appealing than selecting attacks, the 2D/3D flip is a strong reason to choose Super Paper Mario.
  • Which system can I actually use? The Switch remake gives The Thousand-Year Door a current-platform route. The Wii status of Super Paper Mario may make hardware and legitimate availability the deciding factor.
  • Am I choosing because of release order? Release chronology is not a gameplay requirement. The European Wii release of Super Paper Mario was September 14, 2007, but that date does not create a required story sequence.

What the developers say about Super Paper Mario’s design

The format change was intentional rather than accidental. In Nintendo’s August 30, 2007 interview, Kensuke Tanabe is identified as producer and Ryota Kawade as chief director of game design and direction. Tanabe explained that the team wanted an RPG-like story while refraining from the traditional RPG battle format.

Kawade described the battle decision this way: “I felt that the more traditional Mario-style battles worked better in this game in order to effectively utilise this idea of dimension-swapping, which is why we opted for this style.” That statement is useful when choosing between the games: Super Paper Mario is not meant to be a slightly altered version of the turn-based formula. Its action structure exists to make the dimension mechanic work.

A practical decision process

  1. Identify your preferred core loop. If you want turn-based RPG encounters, choose The Thousand-Year Door. If you want jumping, real-time movement and perspective puzzles, choose Super Paper Mario.
  2. Check your hardware. A current Switch owner has direct access to The Thousand-Year Door’s remake. Super Paper Mario requires the Wii-era route identified by Nintendo’s listing, not a Switch version.
  3. Decide whether a format experiment sounds appealing. Pick Super Paper Mario if the idea of an RPG-like story without traditional RPG battles interests you.
  4. Use story order only as a tie-breaker. There is no documented requirement to complete The Thousand-Year Door before understanding Super Paper Mario.
  5. If you still cannot choose, default to The Thousand-Year Door. It better matches the conventional Paper Mario expectation and is the more straightforward introduction for an RPG newcomer.

Common mistakes when choosing

  • Assuming both games use the same battle system: They do not. Super Paper Mario deliberately abandons the earlier turn-based model.
  • Treating Super Paper Mario as a Switch game: The official information reviewed here lists Wii and historical Wii U availability, not a current Switch release.
  • Choosing solely by release order: The fact that Super Paper Mario is the third game does not make it a required sequel for understanding its premise.
  • Expecting one universal winner: The meaningful difference is what you want to play. RPG planning and partners point to The Thousand-Year Door; platforming and dimension puzzles point to Super Paper Mario.
  • Inventing a time or value comparison: The available evidence establishes release dates and design distinctions, not a reliable comparative completion-time, sales or player-preference statistic.

Final recommendation

Play Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door first if you want the classic Paper Mario role-playing experience, need a current Nintendo platform, or are unsure which format suits you. Its turn-based combat, partners and RPG-centered journey make it the default recommendation.

Play Super Paper Mario first if platforming and perspective puzzles are more important to you than turn-based battles. Its 2D/3D flip, playable character abilities and action-led structure make it a legitimate first choice, not merely a detour from the RPG games.

The best order is therefore preference-led: The Thousand-Year Door first for traditional RPG expectations, Super Paper Mario first for action-platforming and dimension-based exploration.
