Paper Girls and Saga share writer Brian K. Vaughan and publisher Image Comics, but they deliver very different reading experiences. Choose Paper Girls for a finished, 30-issue coming-of-age mystery that begins in 1988; choose Saga for an ongoing, mature space-fantasy about a family caught in a galactic war.

Paper Girls vs. Saga at a glance

The simplest distinction is narrative scale and structure. Paper Girls follows four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls—Erin, KJ, Mac and Tiffany—whose Halloween-morning route turns into a time-travel mystery. The complete story ends with issue #30. Saga follows Alana and Marko, lovers from opposing extraterrestrial societies, as they flee authorities while raising their daughter Hazel during an interplanetary conflict. It remains an ongoing series; Image Comics lists issue #72 dated March 19, 2025, and collected editions through volume 12.

Category Paper Girls Saga

Those categories are not a quality ranking. They describe what each comic asks you to follow: a tightly bounded adolescent ensemble in Paper Girls, versus a multigenerational family journey that keeps expanding in Saga.

How the two premises create different stories

Paper Girls: a neighborhood mystery that breaks open time

Image’s series description places Paper Girls in the early hours after Halloween 1988. Erin, KJ, Mac and Tiffany are 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls working a suburban route when they encounter events far beyond anything in their ordinary lives. The initial hook is local and recognizable—friends, bikes, homes and a pre-smartphone town—but the mystery rapidly introduces time travel, alternate futures and large-scale science-fiction threats.

The four girls remain the story’s organizing principle even when the setting becomes strange. Their age matters because they must interpret impossible events without adult authority, while their differing personalities produce conflict and loyalty inside the group. The result is a mystery whose emotional stakes come from friendship and growing up as much as from solving the science-fiction puzzle.

Image’s 2021 announcement for the complete collection quotes artist Cliff Chiang describing the 30 issues as full of “mystery, friendship, and giant robots.” That phrase captures the comic’s blend: intimate relationships are placed next to spectacular, often bewildering technology. The complete run is designed to be read as one arc rather than as an open-ended franchise.

Saga: a family epic inside a galactic war

Image’s Saga page describes an epic space-opera/fantasy built around Alana and Marko, members of warring extraterrestrial peoples. Their relationship is politically forbidden, and the birth of their daughter Hazel makes the family a target. They travel through a hostile galaxy while military forces, bounty hunters and other interested parties pursue them.

The family is both the emotional center and the mechanism that exposes the wider universe. Hazel’s perspective can frame events, but the series is not limited to a child’s viewpoint: Alana and Marko have their own histories, flaws and competing ways of protecting one another. New locations and supporting characters continually widen the story’s political and personal stakes.

Writer Brian K. Vaughan explained the role of Hazel in an Image announcement about the deluxe editions: “Saga is the story of Hazel, and each hardcover edition will feature her at a different stage of life in a new cover from co-creator Fiona Staples.” The statement identifies Hazel as the long-term anchor, even as the cast and geography grow around her.

Protagonists: four friends versus a family on the run

The ensemble in Paper Girls

Erin, KJ, Mac and Tiffany begin together, and their shared route gives the book a naturally balanced ensemble. No single girl is presented as the permanent adult-style leader. Instead, the narrative shifts attention among them as they disagree about danger, trust and what their discoveries mean. Their differences make the group useful for readers who enjoy character interplay: one girl may push toward action while another demands evidence or worries about consequences.

Because all four start at age 12, the comic treats adolescence as an active condition rather than background flavor. They are resourceful, but they lack the experience and institutional power that the older forces in the story possess. The time-travel premise then turns ordinary questions about identity and the future into literal plot problems.

The family unit in Saga

Alana and Marko begin as partners from enemy cultures, and Hazel’s birth changes the story from a romance under pressure into a family survival narrative. Their decisions have immediate consequences for a child who cannot choose the conflict surrounding her. The family’s movement through different worlds allows the series to examine parenthood, loyalty, trauma and political identity while still delivering action and fantastical spectacle.

Hazel’s occasional narration gives Saga a retrospective dimension. Readers can see the family’s experiences both as immediate danger and as a life story being remembered. That structure supports a longer arc than Paper Girls’ concentrated run and allows relationships to evolve over years of publication.

Setting and genre: suburban time travel or space fantasy

Why Paper Girls feels grounded before it becomes cosmic

The 1988 setting supplies concrete details—newspapers, bicycles, suburban streets and the morning after Halloween—before the plot moves into speculative territory. That contrast is central to the reading experience. Readers always have a familiar point of reference, even when the girls encounter future technology or alternate timelines. The science fiction is therefore filtered through a young person’s immediate concerns: getting home, understanding friends and deciding whom to trust.

The book can be described as a young-adult adventure, but that label should not imply a simple or consequence-free story. Its time-bending ideas can become complex, and its characters face danger that is not softened merely because they are children.

Why Saga feels expansive from the beginning

Saga starts with a romance that violates the boundaries of a galactic war, so its worldbuilding is political from page one. Different planets, species, technologies and belief systems appear as the family travels. The fantasy elements sit beside science-fiction machinery, creating a hybrid space opera rather than a strictly defined hard-science setting.

Its scale is best understood as a synthesis of the official premises, not a measurable claim about panel count or geography. The series keeps adding locations and viewpoints because the family’s flight intersects with a much larger conflict. Readers who prefer a contained mystery may find that breadth demanding; readers who want an evolving universe will find it part of the appeal.

Completion and reading commitment

Paper Girls is a finished 30-issue narrative

Image’s catalog identifies issue #30, dated July 31, 2019, and describes the complete paperback as collecting issues #1–30. You can therefore begin the series knowing that its central storyline has an ending and that no future single issues are required to reach the conclusion.

The one-volume option is Paper Girls: The Complete Story TP. The listed edition is a 784-page T+ paperback with ISBN 9781534319998. Image gives a $49.99 cover price on that product page; it is a publisher cover price, not a guarantee of a current retailer price or stock level.

Saga is still open-ended

Saga does not have a completed-series endpoint in the cited catalog. Image lists issue #72 with a March 19, 2025 date and collections through volume 12. That means a box set can provide a substantial entry point without containing everything currently collected, and readers should expect the publication story to continue beyond the material in the box.

The Saga Box Set contains trade-paperback volumes 1–9 across 1,524 pages and carries ISBN 9781534321403. It is a catch-up collection, not a complete-series set. If you want to read beyond volume 9, you will need later collected editions; Image’s series catalog lists volumes through 12.

Ratings and content expectations

The cited collected editions use different publisher ratings. The Paper Girls complete paperback and Backpack Edition are marked T+, while the Saga Box Set is marked M. These labels belong to those specific editions and should be treated as guidance, not as universal judgments about every issue, format or reader.

Saga is written for a mature audience and combines graphic violence, sexual material, strong language and emotionally difficult situations with its family and war themes. The M rating is the clearest reason to check edition-level descriptions before giving it to a younger reader.

Paper Girls’ T+ label reflects a teen-oriented presentation, but the story still includes peril, violence and unsettling science-fiction imagery. Parents, teachers and younger readers should consult the specific edition’s content information rather than assuming that “teen” means suitable for every reader.

Art and visual storytelling

Cliff Chiang and Matt Wilson in Paper Girls

Cliff Chiang draws Paper Girls, with colors by Matt Wilson. The visual approach has to make two modes coexist: recognizable suburban spaces and highly imaginative future technology. Clear character silhouettes help readers track four similarly aged protagonists, while color and design distinguish ordinary 1988 scenes from temporal disruptions and mechanical threats.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Chiang’s description of “mystery, friendship, and giant robots” is useful because it identifies the visual and emotional range without reducing the comic to action. The girls’ faces, body language and changing proximity often communicate as much as the science-fiction reveals.

Fiona Staples in Saga

Fiona Staples illustrates Saga. Her work must accommodate a large cast, alien environments, fantastical creatures and intimate domestic scenes. The family can move from a quiet conversation to a dangerous battlefield without the visual identity of the series breaking apart. That flexibility supports the book’s central contrast between ordinary caregiving and extraordinary surroundings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The different art teams reinforce the different narrative engines. Paper Girls uses a focused ensemble and a recognizable starting world; Saga uses an expanding cast and an interplanetary canvas. Neither approach is inherently superior, but readers who choose primarily by visual atmosphere may find this distinction decisive.

Choose the compact entry point

If you want to test Paper Girls inexpensively or in a lighter physical format, the Backpack Edition begins with issues #1–10. Stop there only if you are sampling the series; the book ends well before the 30-issue conclusion. Digital or individual-volume formats are also possible, but the cited product information establishes the Backpack Edition as a beginning rather than a full-series substitute.

Choose the complete one-volume experience

If avoiding a mid-series pause matters most, the Complete Story paperback is the straightforward physical choice. Its 784 pages gather the full run in one place. The edition is substantial, so readers who prefer smaller books may find the Backpack Edition or original trade volumes easier to handle, but those formats require multiple purchases to finish the story.

Choose a substantial but incomplete Saga start

The Box Set is designed for a large catch-up read: volumes 1–9 in one package. It offers much more material than a single introductory volume, yet it deliberately stops before the later collections listed by Image. Plan for additional volumes if you want to reach the current catalog endpoint.

Which comic should you read first?

Pick Paper Girls if you want:

  • A story with a definite ending at issue #30.
  • A four-person adolescent ensemble whose relationships drive the plot.
  • A mystery that starts in a recognizable 1988 suburb and expands into time travel.
  • A T+ publisher rating on the cited collected editions.
  • A single complete paperback rather than an open-ended reading commitment.

Pick Saga if you want:

  • An ongoing series with no completed endpoint in the cited catalog.
  • A family-centered narrative led by Alana, Marko and Hazel.
  • Space-opera conflict, fantasy species and a continually expanding setting.
  • A mature-rated reading experience on the cited box set.
  • A long catch-up path, beginning with volumes 1–9 and continuing through later collections.

Readers who are undecided can use length and tone as the tie-breakers. Start with Paper Girls when you want to finish a tightly bounded story over a concentrated binge. Start with Saga when you want characters whose lives and family relationships can develop across a much longer publication arc.

Common points of confusion

They are not two versions of the same story

Both comics are written by Brian K. Vaughan and published by Image Comics, but they do not share a setting, cast or continuity. Their similarities are primarily creative: Vaughan’s interest in strong character relationships, high-concept premises and emotionally consequential genre storytelling.

A complete collection is not the same as a current series

Paper Girls: The Complete Story genuinely gathers all 30 issues. The Saga Box Set is called a box set because it packages volumes 1–9, not because the entire series has ended. Image’s listing of volumes through 12 is the practical distinction to remember when planning purchases.

Publisher ratings apply to editions

Do not convert T+ or M into a universal statement about every format or personal suitability. Ratings can be attached to a particular collected edition, and individual readers may have different sensitivities to violence, sexuality, language or frightening imagery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Historical adaptation language is not a current availability claim

Image’s 2021 complete-series announcement referred to Paper Girls as being adapted for Amazon Prime at that time. That historical wording does not establish where the adaptation is currently streaming. Treat the comic and its collected editions as the reliable starting point for this comparison, and check a current service listing separately if you are also seeking a screen adaptation.

The bottom line

Paper Girls is the better first choice for readers who value completion, a young ensemble and a time-bending mystery rooted in one neighborhood and one pivotal morning. Its 30 issues form a finished arc, and the Complete Story paperback puts that arc in a single T+ volume.

Saga is the better first choice for readers who want a mature family epic, a hybrid space-fantasy setting and a story that remains open to future chapters. The Box Set is a substantial volumes 1–9 entry point, but it is only part of the ongoing series. In short: choose the finished adolescent mystery for a concentrated read, or choose the expanding family space opera for a longer commitment.
