For the current official baseline, plan a Palworld dedicated server around at least four CPU cores and 16 GB of memory. Pocketpair recommends 32 GB or more for larger servers; 8 GB may boot but carries a higher out-of-memory crash risk. Use a fast SSD, run a 64-bit Windows or Linux host, and make the server’s UDP port (8211 by default) reachable through your router and firewall.

Official Palworld dedicated-server requirements

Pocketpair’s Palworld Server Guide, version 1.0.4, lists baseline requirements for the dedicated server itself. These are not a player-count guarantee: the guide does not publish a formula for concurrent players, world activity, mods or configuration settings. Treat the figures as the starting specification for a stable host, then leave room for the operating system and any other services running on the machine.

Component Official guidance What it means when choosing a host
CPU 4 cores or more recommended Choose a modern processor with at least four available cores; Pocketpair does not name a required model or publish player-based CPU tiers.
Memory (RAM) 16 GB listed; 32 GB or more recommended for larger servers Sixteen gigabytes is the normal baseline. Eight gigabytes can boot, but Pocketpair warns that it increases the possibility of out-of-memory crashes.
Storage Faster SSD recommended Use responsive solid-state storage and keep free capacity for saves, updates and logs. The guide does not require NVMe or specify a capacity.
Network UDP port 8211 by default; the port can be changed Your router must support forwarding the chosen UDP port, and the host firewall must allow it.
Operating system 64-bit Windows or Linux Pick the platform you can maintain. Windows with the Steam client is documented as the easiest route for people new to game servers.

The 16 GB and 32 GB figures above are server guidance, not the game client’s requirements. A PC that meets the Steam client specification is not automatically sized for hosting a persistent world.

How much RAM does a Palworld server need?

Use 16 GB as the practical baseline

A machine with 16 GB of memory matches Pocketpair’s listed amount and leaves more headroom than an 8 GB system. The host must share memory with Windows or Linux, the server process, monitoring tools and update utilities, so do not assume the entire physical total is available to PalServer.

When 32 GB makes sense

Pocketpair recommends 32 GB or more for larger servers. “Larger” is not defined by a published player number, so use the higher tier when you expect more simultaneous players, a busy world, several background services or room to grow without replacing the machine. This is a capacity recommendation, not a promise of a particular player limit.

Why 8 GB is a risky choice

The official wording is explicit: “8GB is also bootable, but increases the possibility of server crashes due to out of memory.” Booting successfully only proves that the process can start; it does not show that the host can sustain saves, world activity and player joins. If an 8 GB host is all you have, close unrelated applications, watch memory use and keep current backups, but regard it as a compromise rather than the target specification.

CPU, storage and network planning

CPU: four cores, with no official model tier

Pocketpair recommends four or more CPU cores. The guide does not identify a processor family, clock speed or player-count-to-core formula. Prioritize a current, adequately cooled processor and avoid allocating every core to other workloads. More cores can provide scheduling headroom, but they do not replace sufficient RAM or fast storage.

Storage: a fast SSD protects responsiveness and saves

Pocketpair recommends a faster SSD and warns that low-performance storage can corrupt save data. The documentation does not say that NVMe is mandatory and does not state a minimum disk size. Leave space for the operating system, the server installation, world saves, logs, updates and at least one local backup set. If you use a virtual machine or rented instance, verify that the advertised disk is solid-state and that the provider’s storage-performance limits are clear.

Network: public reachability is part of the requirement

The default game-server port is UDP 8211, and the port can be changed. Forward the selected UDP port from your router to the host’s fixed local IP address, then permit the same port in the operating system firewall. A server that runs locally but cannot receive inbound traffic is not reachable by remote players. Your internet connection also needs enough upstream capacity for the intended group; Pocketpair’s guide specifies the port and forwarding requirement but does not publish a bandwidth figure.

Dedicated server, community server and cross-play

A dedicated server hosts the Palworld world separately from the game client, so the host does not need to keep the game client open. A community server is still a dedicated server; it is additionally registered in the in-game server list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players on Xbox or PS5 require the server to be deployed as a community server. If console access matters, confirm that your deployment method and hosting service support community-server registration before you build the world. A private dedicated instance that is reachable only by a direct address will not satisfy that platform-listing requirement.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?

Self-host on Windows

Self-hosting gives you control over hardware, files, updates and network policy. It also makes you responsible for an always-available machine, power and internet reliability, router configuration, firewall rules, backups and recovery. Windows with the Steam client is Pocketpair’s easiest documented path for people without game-server experience.

Self-host on Linux

Linux can be efficient and works with the documented SteamCMD deployment, but the guide assumes some Linux knowledge. You will administer services, permissions, updates, firewall rules and restart behavior yourself. Choose it when you are comfortable with the command line and want a minimal, purpose-built host.

Rent a managed server

Managed hosting avoids buying an always-on computer and usually places networking, restarts and basic administration in a control panel. It does not remove the need to check technical details. Compare the provider’s allocated RAM and CPU resources, SSD storage, geographic region and latency, backup and restore controls, update scheduling, platform compatibility, support terms, cancellation policy and ability to migrate your files. If Xbox or PS5 players are expected, verify community-server support specifically. Pocketpair’s documentation does not compare providers, prices or service-level guarantees, so do not treat a plan label as proof that it meets your workload.

Installation methods documented by Pocketpair

Windows with the Steam client

  1. Install Steam on the 64-bit Windows host and sign in with an account that can install the server tools.
  2. Use Steam’s library or tools interface to install the Palworld Dedicated Server package described in Pocketpair’s guide.
  3. Open the installation directory and start PalServer.exe.
  4. Configure the server, then create the router port-forward and Windows Firewall rule for the selected UDP port.
  5. Test from a separate network, not only from the host itself, so you verify external reachability.

This route minimizes command-line work, which is why the official guide presents it as the easiest setup for newcomers.

Windows or Linux with SteamCMD

SteamCMD provides command-line installation and update control. Pocketpair documents this command:

Official Docker deployment

Pocketpair’s official Docker repository supplies an image and a sample Compose file. Adapt the sample to your environment rather than copying it blindly, verify where save data is mounted, and match the image tag to the Palworld version. Back up the saves before updating the image.

The repository cautions against Docker Desktop on Windows and macOS because limited disk read/write speeds can increase the risk of save corruption or malfunction. That warning concerns Docker Desktop’s storage path, not Docker as a deployment method in every environment. Use a suitable Linux host or another environment with reliable disk I/O, and verify the data volume after container creation.

Port forwarding and firewall checklist

  • Give the server host a stable local IP address through a DHCP reservation or static configuration.
  • Forward UDP 8211, or your chosen replacement port, from the router to that address.
  • Create an inbound firewall rule on Windows or Linux for the same UDP port.
  • If you changed the port in the server configuration, use that value consistently in the router, firewall and connection instructions.
  • Test from a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot; testing only inside your LAN can hide a forwarding error.
  • Restrict administrative access to the host and router, and do not expose unrelated management ports.

Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding. If the rule appears correct but outside players still cannot connect, ask the provider whether you have a publicly routable address or use a hosting environment that supplies one.

Backups, updates and failure recovery

Back up before every change

Copy the world-save directory to storage separate from the live server before updating the game, changing Docker images or editing configuration. Keep more than one dated copy and periodically test that a copy can be opened or restored. Fast storage reduces risk but is not a backup.

Update in a controlled sequence

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
  2. Copy the current save data and configuration.
  3. Update through Steam, SteamCMD or the container image, depending on your deployment.
  4. Confirm that the image or package version matches the game version, especially with Docker.
  5. Start the server, inspect logs, and join with a test account before reopening access.

Common symptoms and fixes

  • Out-of-memory crash: check actual memory pressure, stop unrelated services, and move from 8 GB toward the official 16 GB baseline or 32 GB class for a larger workload.
  • Players cannot connect: verify the server is running, the configured port is UDP, the router forwards to the correct local IP, and the host firewall allows the same port.
  • Save corruption or unusual container behavior: restore the latest known-good backup, check disk health and free space, and avoid Docker Desktop storage paths that the official repository flags as low-I/O environments.
  • Console players cannot find the server: confirm that it is registered as a community server; a normal dedicated instance is not sufficient for Xbox or PS5 access.
  • Server starts locally but fails after reboot: configure a service or scheduled startup, ensure the save directory is writable, and test a full stop-and-start cycle.

Do not confuse client requirements with server requirements

The Steam game listing describes the requirements for running the Palworld client. Its memory and operating-system figures apply to the computer displaying and running the game, not automatically to a dedicated server process. For hosting decisions, use Pocketpair’s dedicated-server guide: four or more CPU cores, the listed memory tiers, fast SSD storage, 64-bit Windows or Linux, and reachable UDP networking.

A practical decision rule

Choose self-hosting when you already have an always-on 64-bit Windows or Linux machine, can provide at least the official baseline, and are comfortable with router, firewall and backup administration. Choose managed hosting when uptime, public reachability and maintenance convenience matter more than owning the hardware; compare the resources and policies rather than trusting a marketing label. Use Docker only where the storage layer delivers reliable read/write performance, and plan community-server registration from the beginning if console cross-play is required.

Bottom line

Build around 4-plus CPU cores and 16 GB RAM for a normal Palworld dedicated server, step up to 32 GB or more for a larger workload, and avoid treating 8 GB as a dependable production target. Put the server on a fast SSD, expose UDP 8211 (or your replacement port) through both router and firewall, and select Windows, Linux, Docker or managed hosting according to the administration you can reliably perform. These are Pocketpair’s current baselines, not a guaranteed player-capacity chart, so leave headroom and test your actual world before inviting a full community.
