The dependable way to produce Crude Oil in Palworld is to unlock the Crude Oil Extractor, place it so it overlaps an oil field, and keep it supplied with substantial electrical power. Oil-rig chests and drops from some hostile Pals can cover a short-term shortage, but they are not a replacement for a powered oil base when you need Plasteel or large amounts of ammunition.

What Crude Oil does in Palworld

Crude Oil is a late-game resource used in several advanced crafting recipes. It is not a general-purpose fuel that can be poured into every machine, so collecting it without a plan can leave you short when a major upgrade or ammunition batch becomes available. The most important decision is whether your current goal is a small emergency quantity or a repeatable supply for continued production.

  • Plasteel: consumes 5 Crude Oil per unit, in addition to Ore and Paldium Fragments.
  • Flamethrower Fuel: 1 Crude Oil produces 5 fuel.
  • Frag Grenade Mk2: consumes 3 Crude Oil per grenade, along with Gunpowder and Pal Metal Ingots.
  • Missile Ammo: consumes 1 Crude Oil per round, along with a Circuit Board, Pal Fluids, and a Pal Metal Ingot.

If you are still unlocking equipment, reserve oil for the recipe that blocks your next progression step. Once you begin manufacturing Plasteel or firing missile weapons regularly, an extractor base becomes far more valuable than repeated combat runs.

The permanent solution: build a Crude Oil Extractor

Unlock requirements

The Crude Oil Extractor appears at technology tier 50 and requires two Technology Points to unlock. Reaching the tier is only the first gate: you also need 250 Pal Metal Ingots and 50 Circuit Boards for each extractor you craft.

Those material requirements make an extractor a deliberate late-game investment. Before spending the Technology Points, check that you can produce the required Pal Metal Ingots and Circuit Boards and that your intended base has enough room for the machine, generators, and storage that will support it.

How to craft and place it

  1. Open the Technology menu and unlock the Crude Oil Extractor at tier 50 by spending two Technology Points.
  2. Gather 250 Pal Metal Ingots and 50 Circuit Boards.
  3. Craft the extractor through your construction or production interface.
  4. Travel to an oil field: an exposed resource deposit that is visibly distinct from ordinary terrain.
  5. Enter building mode and move the extractor until its footprint directly overlaps the oil field. A nearby placement is not sufficient; the field must be under the machine.
  6. Confirm the placement, then connect the base to a strong electricity supply before expecting production.

The placement check is the most common source of a seemingly inactive extractor. If the machine is beside an oil field rather than over it, moving it onto the deposit is the fix; adding more generators will not make an incorrectly placed extractor produce oil.

Planning the electricity an extractor needs

The extractor has an exceptionally high electrical demand. A base that appears adequately powered for ordinary crafting can still run out of stored electricity quickly after an extractor starts. When the reserve is depleted, other powered structures can shut down, interrupting production and any systems that depend on the same supply.

Prepare power before the first extraction cycle

  • Build or reserve enough generation capacity to cover the extractor’s unusually heavy load, not merely the average load of your existing machines.
  • Keep electrical storage available so short dips in generation do not immediately stop the base.
  • Watch the stored-energy level after the extractor begins. A steadily falling reserve means the base is consuming more than it generates.
  • Do not place several extractors at once until one machine has run reliably through a normal operating period.
  • When adding another extractor, increase generation and storage first; otherwise the new machine can take power from crafting stations, refrigeration, or other critical structures.

There is no benefit to gathering the construction materials early if the destination base cannot sustain the electrical load. Treat power capacity as part of the extractor’s recipe even though it is not listed as a crafting ingredient.

Where to establish an oil base

Use an actual oil field, not a convenient flat area

Oil fields are visible resource deposits. The extractor must overlap one of these deposits, so a beautiful location without a field cannot become an oil-producing base. Scout the site in building mode before committing materials: confirm that the machine can be placed over the deposit and that there is enough surrounding space for power generation, storage, and safe movement.

Sunlit Isle example

A location guide published on August 14, 2026 identified Sunlit Isle near coordinates (405, -483) as a low-level base option with six crude-oil nodes. Coordinates and node counts can change with patches or map revisions, so verify the location on a current map in your game before traveling or spending resources. The coordinates are a navigation aid, not a guarantee that every version of the game will show the same layout.

What makes a good site

  • Enough field coverage: multiple deposits can give you room to expand, but do not assume every node can be reached from one building footprint.
  • Construction space: leave room around the extractor for generators, storage, and access routes.
  • Defensibility: a site that is easy to protect reduces interruptions while the machine is running.
  • Travel time: choose a location you can reach when collecting output or repairing the base, especially if you are not yet ready for a fully self-sufficient outpost.

Ways to obtain Crude Oil before your extractor is ready

Two temporary sources can bridge the gap between discovering advanced recipes and completing the level-50 extractor setup. Both are useful for small quantities, but neither offers the predictable supply of a powered oil field.

Oil-rig treasure chests

Treasure chests on oil rigs can contain Crude Oil. This is the practical emergency option when you need enough oil for a single crafting job or want to start accumulating stock while gathering Pal Metal Ingots and Circuit Boards. Chest contents are limited by what you find during your runs, so the method becomes inefficient when your target is sustained Plasteel or ammunition production.

Drops from hostile Pals

Some hostile Pals drop Crude Oil when defeated. These drops are encounter-dependent: you must find the relevant enemies, win the fight, and accept whatever quantity the encounter provides. Combat farming can supplement a small deficit, but it is not a stable production plan and exposes you to more risk than collecting from an established base.

Choosing the right stopgap

Option Setup cost Electrical demand Repeatability Combat exposure Best use
Oil-field extractor Level-50 unlock, 2 Technology Points, 250 Pal Metal Ingots, and 50 Circuit Boards Exceptionally high; requires substantial generation and storage Continuous while correctly placed and powered Depends on base location and defenses Long-term Plasteel and ammunition supply
Oil-rig chests No extractor materials; requires reaching and exploring a rig None at the source Limited to chest opportunities High, because rigs are combat locations Emergency stock while preparing an extractor
Hostile-Pal drops No construction investment; requires locating and defeating eligible Pals None at the source Encounter-dependent Direct combat every run Small supplemental quantities

Use the extractor when the question is “How do I keep producing?” Use a rig chest or enemy drop when the question is “How do I finish one recipe before my base is ready?”

How to allocate oil for advanced crafting

Plasteel planning

Plasteel costs 5 Crude Oil per unit, plus Ore and Paldium Fragments. Because the oil cost is fixed per unit, calculate your intended batch before starting production: multiply the number of Plasteel units by five, then confirm that the other ingredients are also available. This avoids consuming oil on a side recipe and discovering that a technology upgrade is one batch short.

Flamethrower Fuel planning

Each Crude Oil produces five units of Flamethrower Fuel. This conversion is useful when you need a controlled amount for an expedition, but it can consume a stockpile quickly if the weapon is used continuously. Convert only what you expect to carry or use rather than turning every barrel of oil into fuel immediately.

Frag Grenade Mk2 planning

Every Frag Grenade Mk2 uses 3 Crude Oil, along with Gunpowder and Pal Metal Ingots. Oil is not the only bottleneck, so check all three inputs before beginning a large batch. If Gunpowder or Pal Metal is missing, retaining the oil for Plasteel or missile ammunition may be the better progression choice.

Missile Ammo planning

Missile Ammo uses 1 Crude Oil per round, plus a Circuit Board, Pal Fluids, and a Pal Metal Ingot. The one-oil-per-round cost looks modest, but a long combat session can turn ammunition into a substantial recurring drain. Track the number of rounds you intend to craft and reserve that amount before converting oil into another product.

A practical setup sequence for your first oil base

  1. Confirm the objective. Decide whether you need a one-time recipe or a continuing supply. If the need is temporary, use a rig chest or eligible enemy drops while preparing the base.
  2. Reach technology tier 50. Save two Technology Points for the Crude Oil Extractor unlock.
  3. Stock construction materials. Gather 250 Pal Metal Ingots and 50 Circuit Boards before traveling to the oil field.
  4. Scout the field. Identify the deposit and test the extractor’s footprint in building mode. Reject sites where the machine cannot overlap the field cleanly.
  5. Build the power system first. Add generation and storage with enough headroom for the extractor’s exceptionally high demand.
  6. Place one extractor. Start with a single machine so you can observe the base’s energy balance.
  7. Monitor production and power. If stored electricity falls rapidly or other structures stop, increase generation and storage before adding another extractor.
  8. Set a reserve. Keep enough Crude Oil for your immediate Plasteel, fuel, grenade, or missile plan instead of spending the entire output as soon as it appears.

Troubleshooting an extractor that is not producing

The machine is built but output is zero

  • Check the footprint: the extractor must be directly over an oil field, not merely close to one.
  • Check the electricity connection and confirm that the base is actually generating power.
  • Look at stored electricity. A drained reserve can make the extractor and other powered structures stop.
  • Confirm that you unlocked and crafted the correct machine; the resource cannot be purchased from merchants.

Other machines keep shutting down

This usually indicates an electrical shortfall rather than an oil-field problem. The extractor’s load can rapidly drain stored electricity, after which other powered structures lose service. Increase generation and storage, then observe the base again before expanding oil production.

You cannot place the extractor on a promising site

Move the machine until its footprint overlaps the visible deposit. A flat, attractive location without an oil field is not a valid placement. If the field is crowded or uneven, try another node or choose a site with more construction clearance.

You are short a few units for a recipe

Do not dismantle a functioning oil base or add an underpowered second extractor for a small deficit. Search oil-rig treasure chests or defeat hostile Pals known to drop Crude Oil, then return to your planned production schedule.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Building beside the field: proximity does not count; the extractor has to overlap the deposit.
  • Ignoring the power budget: ordinary base output is not proof that it can sustain an extractor.
  • Scaling too quickly: several machines can drain shared storage and disable unrelated production.
  • Spending all oil on a side project: advanced ammunition and Plasteel often require a larger reserve than expected.
  • Treating emergency sources as permanent: rig chests and enemy drops are supplemental and encounter-dependent.
  • Trusting old coordinates blindly: map positions and node counts should be checked against the current patch.
  • Assuming merchants sell it: Crude Oil cannot be bought from merchants, so plan around extraction, chests, or drops.

Decision guide: which oil strategy fits your situation?

Your situation Recommended approach Reason
You need one or two recipes completed now Search oil-rig chests or farm eligible hostile-Pal drops These sources avoid the level-50 construction investment and can cover a small shortage.
You have reached tier 50 and can afford the materials Build one extractor on a confirmed oil field It establishes repeatable production while limiting the initial power risk.
Your base loses power after construction Increase generation and storage before adding extractors The machine’s unusually high demand is overwhelming the existing electrical reserve.
You are manufacturing Plasteel or large ammunition batches Use a dedicated, well-powered oil-field base and maintain a reserve These goals consume oil repeatedly, making temporary combat sources inefficient.
You are planning around a map location from an older guide Verify the field and coordinates in the current map Node counts and coordinates are sensitive to game updates.

Final checklist
