Palantir and Snowflake both help organizations use data and AI, but they start from different architectural ideas. Palantir emphasizes an operational software layer that connects data, decision logic, artificial intelligence and workflows. Snowflake emphasizes a cloud data platform that separates storage, compute and cloud services so organizations can run analytics, engineering, AI, applications and data sharing at scale.
The practical choice is therefore not simply which product has more features. It is whether your primary problem is building shared data infrastructure for many workloads, or turning organizational data and rules into controlled operational decisions and actions. The platforms can overlap, and the right answer depends on workload, deployment constraints, governance, developer needs and commercial terms.
Palantir and Snowflake at a glance
The companies describe broad platforms rather than single-purpose products. Palantir groups its principal capabilities into Gotham, Foundry, Apollo and AIP. Snowflake presents an AI Data Cloud spanning data engineering, analytics, AI, applications and collaboration.
| Dimension | Palantir | Snowflake |
|---|---|---|
| Primary emphasis | Connecting data, logic, AI and operational workflows | Consolidating, querying, governing and sharing data for multiple workloads |
| Core platform description | Foundry as the data operations platform, with AIP for generative AI and Apollo for continuous delivery | Cloud-native platform with separately scalable storage, compute and cloud-services layers |
| Key conceptual layer | Ontology, which represents organizational objects, relationships, rules and actions | Governed data platform and sharing model built around managed storage, compute and services |
| AI capabilities described by the companies | AIP connects to third-party large language models and supports agents, automations, applications and workflow evaluation | AI workloads across the platform, including Snowflake Intelligence data agents for structured and unstructured data |
| Deployment and infrastructure | Apollo coordinates delivery and manages infrastructure hosting Palantir platforms; Gotham supports defense and intelligence missions | Runs across three major public clouds and 53 regional deployments |
| Commercial model | Generally one- to five-year software contracts, with revenue recognized ratably over the term | Consumption charges for compute, storage and data transfer, plus capacity arrangements typically lasting one to four years and on-demand usage |
| Typical starting question | How do we connect information to decisions, applications and actions? | How do we provide governed, scalable access to data and analytical or AI workloads? |
This table describes emphasis and architecture, not an absolute product boundary. A Snowflake implementation can support applications and AI agents, while Palantir implementations also include data management and analytics.

What Palantir sells
Palantir says it builds software that helps organizations integrate their data, decisions and operations at scale. Its FY2025 Form 10-K identifies Gotham, Foundry, Apollo and AIP as the principal platforms. Customers may bundle them into one ecosystem, although the platforms have different roles.
Foundry: data operations plus workflow development
Foundry is Palantir’s foundational data operations platform. The company describes it as providing data management, logic authoring, Ontology development, analytics and workflow development. That combination is important: Foundry is not presented only as a repository or query engine. It is intended to let teams model how an organization works and then use that model in applications and processes.
In a Foundry project, data from existing systems can be connected to business concepts, relationships and rules. Analysts can use the resulting context for analysis, while application and operations teams can use the same context to build workflows. The value proposition is a common operational model rather than separate data, reporting and process silos.
The Ontology: the conceptual distinction
Palantir’s Ontology is the key conceptual difference in its positioning. It connects organizational data with logic and actions so teams can represent and operationalize decisions and workflows. Instead of treating a customer, machine, shipment or case as only a row in a database, an Ontology can represent the object, its relationships, the rules that apply to it and the actions users or software are allowed to take.
That model matters when the output of analysis is an operational decision. For example, a maintenance team may need to identify an at-risk asset, understand the relevant dependencies, apply policy and assign work. An operational platform aims to keep those steps connected rather than handing a static report to another system.
The Ontology is a design concept, not independent evidence that every deployment produces better outcomes. Its usefulness depends on the quality of source data, the accuracy of the modeled rules, the controls around actions and the organization’s ability to adopt the resulting workflows.
AIP: generative AI connected to enterprise context
Palantir describes AIP as its generative AI platform. It supplies secure connectivity to third-party large language models, tools for building AI agents and automations, AI-enabled applications and evaluation capabilities for AI workflows.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The important design choice is that AIP is described as operating with Foundry data, logic, applications and workflows. An agent can therefore be designed around enterprise permissions and operational context rather than treated as a general chatbot detached from business systems. Any production use still requires careful controls for model access, data permissions, action approval, logging and evaluation.

Apollo: continuous delivery and infrastructure management
Apollo is Palantir’s continuous delivery platform. The architecture documentation describes it as coordinating ongoing software delivery and managing the infrastructure that hosts the platforms. This layer is relevant to buyers that need software updates, platform operations and deployment management across demanding or distributed environments.
Apollo does not replace the customer’s governance responsibilities. Teams still need to define where data may run, which users and services can access it, how changes are approved and how operational actions are monitored.
Gotham: defense and intelligence orientation
Gotham is oriented toward defense and intelligence missions. Palantir says its core applications are integrated with the standard architecture, while its commercial and government platforms can be combined into an ecosystem. Gotham’s mission focus is therefore a useful differentiator for buyers with similar requirements, but it does not mean every Palantir deployment is a defense deployment.

Snowflake’s FY2026 annual report describes its platform as powering the AI Data Cloud. The company says customers can consolidate data into a single source of truth to drive insights, apply AI, build data applications and share data and data products.
A cloud-native architecture with separate resource layers
Snowflake describes three logically integrated but independently scalable layers:
- Storage: managed persistence for data held on the platform.
- Compute: processing resources used for queries, transformations, analytics and other workloads.
- Cloud services: platform services that coordinate metadata, security, governance and other shared functions.
This separation lets an organization scale processing without necessarily scaling storage at the same rate. It also supports multiple teams and workload types using shared governed data while allocating compute resources according to demand.
Workloads beyond the traditional data warehouse
Snowflake lists product categories covering analytics, data engineering, AI, applications and collaboration. That breadth is why reducing the current platform to only a cloud data warehouse is incomplete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsData engineering teams can use it to ingest and transform information. Analysts can query governed datasets. AI teams can work with structured and unstructured data. Developers can build applications around platform data, and organizations can share data or data products with other teams and companies under controlled access.

Sharing and governance
Snowflake describes governed data access and sharing that generally does not require copying or moving the underlying data. That can simplify collaboration when multiple parties need controlled access to a common data product, although the actual security design still depends on account configuration, roles, policies, regions and the data being shared.
For a buyer, the central question is whether Snowflake’s governance and sharing model fits existing data ownership, regulatory and collaboration requirements. A technically capable platform still needs a clear operating model for definitions, quality, access reviews and retention.
Snowflake Intelligence and Snowflake Postgres
Snowflake’s FY2026 annual report describes Snowflake Intelligence as enabling data agents that can act on structured and unstructured data. This extends the platform’s AI story from storing and querying data to supporting agent-based interaction with governed enterprise information.

It does not erase the platform’s data and analytics foundation, but it does make the older shorthand of “just a warehouse” less accurate.
How the architectures differ in practice
The clearest distinction is the object each platform tries to organize.
Palantir organizes operational decisions
Palantir’s architecture starts with an organization’s data, the meaning of that data, the rules governing decisions and the actions that should follow. Foundry and the Ontology provide the context; AIP can add agents and automations; applications and workflows put decisions into practice; Apollo manages delivery and the underlying hosting environment.
This approach is suited to processes where the system must help people decide and act: allocating resources, responding to incidents, coordinating supply chains, investigating cases or managing mission operations. The critical implementation work is modeling business concepts and permissions accurately enough that applications and automations can be trusted.
Snowflake organizes governed data workloads
Snowflake’s architecture starts with a cloud data platform that many teams and workloads can use. Storage, compute and cloud services are separated so organizations can process data, run analytics, develop AI features, build applications and collaborate while managing resource consumption.

This approach is suited to organizations standardizing data access across business units, scaling analytical workloads, sharing governed data products or providing a common foundation for engineering and AI teams. The critical implementation work is designing data models, pipelines, governance, workload isolation and cost controls.
Where the two can overlap
Both platforms can include analytics, AI, applications, governance and integrations. A company might use a cloud data platform for broad analytical storage and use an operational layer for tightly controlled workflows. The official materials reviewed do not establish a formal Palantir–Snowflake partnership, and neither company’s descriptions prove that the platforms must be mutually exclusive.
Do not treat overlapping feature labels as proof of equivalent implementation. “AI,” “applications” or “governance” can refer to very different development models, controls and operating responsibilities.

Palantir: contract-based platform access
Palantir says customers generally sign contracts lasting one to five years. It recognizes revenue ratably over the contract term, and some contracts include termination-for-convenience provisions.
A contract term is not the same thing as total cost. Deployment scope, the number of users and workflows, platform expansion, implementation work, renewal terms and the timing of additional commitments can all affect what a customer ultimately pays. Public-sector contracting patterns can also influence timing and reported contract values.
Snowflake: consumption of platform resources
Snowflake says the substantial majority of its revenue comes from fees based on compute, storage and data transfer used on the platform. Customers can select these resources separately.
- Compute charges depend on resource type and duration, or for some features on the volume of data processed.
- Storage charges depend on the average amount of data stored each month.
- Data-transfer charges depend on transfer volume, cloud provider and regions.
Snowflake also offers capacity arrangements, typically lasting one to four years, alongside on-demand usage. A capacity commitment can improve planning for a known workload, while on-demand usage preserves flexibility but can expose the organization to variable bills.

| Budgeting question | Palantir | Snowflake |
|---|---|---|
| Primary billing basis | Access to software platforms under negotiated contracts | Resource consumption, including compute, storage and data transfer |
| Common commitment window described by the company | One to five years | Capacity arrangements typically one to four years |
| Variable usage drivers | Scope, deployments, expansion and contract terms | Compute type and duration, stored data volume, processed data and transfer volume |
| Planning implication | Budget around contracted platform scope and renewal or expansion decisions | Budget around workload behavior, capacity commitments and usage controls |
Neither model is inherently cheaper or more predictable. Palantir’s negotiated platform terms can make scope and commitments central to planning. Snowflake’s model makes workload behavior and resource governance central to planning.

Deployment, infrastructure and governance questions
Deployment constraints
Palantir’s Apollo layer is designed to coordinate delivery and manage infrastructure hosting the platforms. That matters where software must operate across controlled, distributed or specialized environments. Buyers should verify the exact environments, connectivity patterns, update process and operational responsibilities required for their deployment.
Snowflake describes a cloud-native platform spanning three major public clouds and 53 regional deployments. This gives buyers a broad choice of cloud and regional placement, but the relevant question is whether the available regions, account architecture and data-transfer paths satisfy the organization’s legal, security and latency requirements.
Governance and access control
Palantir’s governance challenge is tied to operational action: who can see an object, change a decision, approve an automation or trigger an action? A successful design must connect data permissions to application and workflow permissions.
Snowflake’s governance challenge is tied to shared data workloads: who owns a dataset, which roles can query it, how policies apply across accounts, and how sharing is controlled across regions or organizations? Its ability to share data without generally copying or moving the underlying data can reduce duplication, but it does not eliminate the need for access reviews and policy design.
Security and compliance due diligence
Marketing descriptions are not a substitute for a buyer’s security review. Before selecting either platform, document required certifications, identity integration, encryption controls, audit retention, network isolation, regional processing, incident response and administrator separation. Then confirm each requirement against the specific edition, cloud, region and contract under consideration.
AI and application development comparison
| Question | Palantir AIP and Foundry | Snowflake platform |
|---|---|---|
| How enterprise context is supplied | Foundry data, Ontology concepts, logic, applications and workflows | Structured and unstructured data governed within the AI Data Cloud |
| Agent and automation emphasis | Agents, automations, AI-enabled applications and workflow evaluation | Snowflake Intelligence data agents and broader AI workloads |
| Model connectivity | Secure connectivity to third-party large language models | AI capabilities integrated into the cloud data platform; exact model choices depend on the implementation |
| Application orientation | Operational applications tied to organizational logic and actions | Data applications, with Snowflake Postgres added as a fully managed Postgres offer in 2026 |
For an AI project, ask more than whether a platform has agents. Evaluate grounding quality, permission inheritance, tool access, approval steps, evaluation methods, auditability, latency, model costs and failure recovery. An agent that can recommend an action and an agent that can execute an action have very different risk profiles.
Which platform fits which workload?
Palantir is a stronger candidate when
- The primary outcome is an operational decision, workflow or action rather than a report.
- Business concepts, relationships, rules and permissions need to be represented in one operational model.
- AI agents must work inside controlled applications and processes.
- The deployment must span specialized or tightly controlled infrastructure.
- Defense, intelligence or mission-oriented workflows are central requirements.
Snowflake is a stronger candidate when
- Many teams need governed access to shared data for analytics, engineering and AI.
- Workloads have distinct storage and compute patterns that benefit from independent scaling.
- Data sharing across business units or external organizations is a major requirement.
- The organization wants consumption-oriented billing tied to resource use.
- Cloud choice and regional deployment across major public-cloud environments are important.
Neither conclusion should be made from a feature checklist alone
A buyer with a strong existing data architecture may need an operational layer on top of it. Another buyer may mainly need to consolidate data and control analytical consumption. The same feature name can conceal different implementation effort, governance requirements and operating costs.

A practical evaluation process
- Define the primary outcome. Write down whether success means faster reporting, a shared data foundation, an AI application, a governed data product or a closed-loop operational workflow.
- Map the data and actions. List source systems, data types, refresh rates, users, downstream applications and any action the platform must trigger. Separate read-only analysis from changes to real-world systems.
- Record deployment constraints. Specify cloud providers, required regions, disconnected or restricted environments, network paths, identity systems and update procedures.
- Design governance before the pilot. Define ownership, roles, row- or object-level access, audit requirements, retention, approval gates and how permissions flow to AI tools and applications.
- Model the commercial unit. For Palantir, estimate platform scope, contract duration, implementation and likely expansion. For Snowflake, estimate storage, compute duration, transfer volumes, capacity commitments and peak usage.
- Test a representative workflow. Use real permission boundaries and realistic data volumes. Measure whether users can complete the target process, not merely whether a demo produces an attractive screen.
- Set exit and recovery plans. Document data export, application dependencies, model and prompt portability, rollback procedures, contract termination rights and the operational effect of an outage.
Current company-reported scale and financial context
The following figures come from different reporting periods and company definitions. They provide context about each vendor’s reported scale, not a direct product-quality comparison.
| Company and period | Reported metric |
|---|---|
| Palantir, Q2 2026 business update dated August 3, 2026 | $1.94 billion quarterly revenue, up 93% year over year |
| Palantir, Q2 2026 | $1.57 billion U.S. revenue, including $764 million U.S. commercial revenue and $809 million U.S. government revenue |
| Snowflake, fiscal year ended January 31, 2026 | $4.7 billion revenue, up 29% year over year |
| Snowflake, January 31, 2026 | 13,328 customers and 125% net revenue retention |
| Snowflake investor-relations overview, July 31, 2026 | $9.00 billion remaining performance obligations; 829 Forbes Global 2000 customers; 828 customers with more than $1 million in trailing-12-month product revenue; and 126% dollar-based net revenue retention |
Palantir’s figures are for a quarter in 2026, while Snowflake’s $4.7 billion figure covers a fiscal year ending January 31, 2026. The revenue totals therefore have different periods and should not be treated as like-for-like market-share or product comparisons.
Common evaluation mistakes
- Calling Snowflake only a warehouse. Its current disclosures include engineering, analytics, AI, applications, collaboration, data agents and Snowflake Postgres.
- Calling Palantir only an AI vendor. AIP is one part of an ecosystem that also includes Foundry, the Ontology, Apollo and Gotham.
- Comparing list prices that are not published for the same scope. Palantir’s contract model and Snowflake’s consumption model require different cost assumptions.
- Ignoring action risk. An AI system that can change records, assign work or trigger an operational process needs stronger approval and audit controls than a read-only analytical assistant.
- Assuming cloud availability solves residency. Regional deployment options still need to be checked against the specific data, account and transfer design.
- Equating a successful demo with production readiness. Production evaluation must include permissions, failure handling, observability, operating ownership and recovery.
- Assuming the platforms are mutually exclusive. The official descriptions show overlapping capabilities but do not establish that one must replace the other in every architecture.
Conclusion: choose the operating model, not the headline feature
Palantir is centered on operationalizing organizational knowledge: connecting data to logic, AI, applications and actions through Foundry, the Ontology, AIP and Apollo, with Gotham serving defense and intelligence missions. Snowflake is centered on a governed cloud data foundation: separating storage, compute and cloud services while supporting engineering, analytics, AI, applications and collaboration.
Choose Palantir when the hard problem is turning complex organizational context into controlled decisions and workflows. Choose Snowflake when the hard problem is providing scalable, governed data infrastructure for many analytical, engineering and AI workloads. If both problems are material, evaluate an architecture that assigns each platform a clear role rather than forcing a universal winner.
