Paddle does not provide a complete, built-in affiliate program for sellers. Sellers can connect affiliate tracking to Paddle, but the setup depends on which Paddle product they use. Paddle’s linked affiliate instructions are explicitly for Paddle Classic; for Paddle Billing, sellers can pass referral details through checkout as custom data, but still need a separate affiliate platform to manage partners, attribution, commissions, and payouts.
What Paddle’s affiliate support does—and does not—include
Paddle’s Help Center says it supports third-party affiliate networks, then points sellers to documentation that applies exclusively to Paddle Classic. That distinction matters: the documentation describes how to send sale information to an affiliate platform so it can attribute a conversion and calculate commissions. It is not evidence that Paddle itself recruits affiliates, issues referral links, administers commission rules, or pays partners.
For Paddle Billing, Paddle documents a way to pass customData through Paddle.js and include it in webhook alerts and reporting. That can help preserve referral context, but it does not by itself create an affiliate program. The seller and affiliate provider must agree on what data to pass and how it will be interpreted.
Paddle’s Help Center answer on third-party affiliates identifies the Classic-only scope of its linked instructions. The Paddle.js checkout documentation describes custom data as a checkout input.

How to build an affiliate program on top of Paddle
- Choose an affiliate-management platform or network. This separate service typically handles affiliate registration, referral links or codes, attribution rules, reporting, commission operations, and sometimes payouts. Paddle handles billing and transaction processing. Paddle’s Classic affiliate-tracking guide links implementation material for providers including CJ Affiliate, FirstPromoter, HasOffers, ImpactRadius, Rewardful, ShareASale, Tapfiliate, Tolt, WebGains, and Voluum. Treat this as documentation for Paddle Classic, not a guarantee that those providers currently support Paddle Billing.
- Capture referral attribution before checkout. Use the provider’s documented link, cookie, or code method to associate a visitor with an affiliate. Preserve a durable referral identifier in your own records or pass it through checkout where your implementation supports that. With Paddle Billing,
customDatacan carry relevant context into webhook alerts and reporting; the provider and seller still need to define the fields and attribution rules. - Report the paid conversion. Paddle’s Classic guide says affiliate platforms typically need a unique transaction identifier and transaction value. Depending on the provider, additional fields may be required, including currency or a net rather than gross value. The Classic guide describes a checkout-completion conversion event and, where the affiliate platform supports it, server-to-server reporting triggered by the
payment_succeededwebhook. Check the current provider API and product-specific Paddle documentation before implementing either route. - Specify how subscription and payment changes affect commissions. Decide how the program should treat renewals, cancellations, refunds, chargebacks, duplicate events, and attribution windows. The available documentation does not establish current Paddle Billing support for these cases across providers. Ask the chosen provider how each is handled, then confirm that your integration can supply the required event data.
- Keep affiliate traffic in the ordinary seller checkout flow. Paddle’s seller handbook says purchases should take place through the seller’s website or app. Design affiliate links to send visitors to the seller’s product page or app flow, rather than treating a direct product checkout link as a special affiliate-payment exception.
How to evaluate a provider for your Paddle setup
Before choosing a tool, verify its current documentation for your exact Paddle product and test a complete referral-to-payment flow in your own environment. Compare the options against these operational requirements:
- Product version: Is Paddle Classic documented, or is Paddle Billing compatibility explicitly confirmed?
- Attribution capture: Does the provider use links, cookies, codes, custom data, or another documented field—and can your checkout flow preserve it?
- Conversion reporting: Can it receive a browser-side success event, server-to-server webhook/API event, or both?
- Subscription lifecycle: Can it reconcile recurring commissions and relevant changes such as refunds, cancellations, or chargebacks under your rules?
- Program operations: Does it provide the affiliate portal, recruitment, commission controls, reporting, fraud controls, and payout handling you need?
- Implementation evidence: Are the provider’s current instructions clear, and does an end-to-end test correctly attribute a referral and record the resulting transaction?
Paddle published a FirstPromoter customer story describing a software business using that service for affiliate and referral tracking, commission payouts, customer tracking, and reporting, with billing-provider integrations that include Paddle. It is a vendor customer story, not an independent comparison or proof of current Paddle Billing compatibility for every seller’s setup.
