In brief: P.T. is a short, teaser-scale psychological horror experience built around revisiting a constrained domestic space and interpreting changes in it. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a complete survival-horror game that uses first-person immersion for a sustained campaign of exploration, combat and survival. They look similar because both use a close first-person viewpoint and photorealistic domestic horror, but they ask the player to do different things.
The comparison is useful precisely because the resemblance stops at presentation. P.T. turns repetition, ambiguity and environmental clues into the main event. Resident Evil 7 uses those kinds of horror techniques inside a much larger game whose progression depends on exploring a broader setting and surviving encounters. Public discussion connected the two games around Resident Evil 7’s reveal, yet the available developer comments do not prove that P.T. directly caused or supplied the design of Resident Evil 7.
What P.T. actually is
P.T. stands for “playable teaser.” It was released on PlayStation Network in 2014 to promote the planned Silent Hills, rather than being the completed Silent Hills game itself. A 2026 PC Gamer retrospective reports that the teaser was delisted in early 2015 after Silent Hills was canceled. That history matters when comparing scope: P.T. was deliberately a concentrated preview, not a full-length campaign with the breadth normally associated with a numbered survival-horror release.
The teaser’s central design idea is a recurring domestic space. The player returns to the same basic route, notices that its appearance or behavior has changed, and works out what those changes mean. The horror comes from uncertainty: an ordinary-looking place no longer behaves normally, and progress depends on paying attention and interpreting clues rather than simply moving from one conventional level to the next.

A loop that makes observation the mechanic
In a conventional campaign, a new room usually means new geography. P.T. makes familiarity itself unsettling. Returning to a recognizable passage lets the player compare one pass with another, so a small environmental difference can become the equivalent of a major event. The experience therefore trains the player to inspect context, timing and visual details.
That does not mean every puzzle rule or hidden trigger can be summarized safely from the available documentation. The reliable distinction is broader: P.T. concentrates its short playtime on revisiting a constrained space, noticing changes and interpreting what to do next. Calling it only a “walking simulator” misses the deliberate puzzle-like reading required to make progress; calling it a complete survival-horror campaign overstates what the teaser was designed to be.
Why the teaser format changes the fear
A teaser can withhold the explanatory structure that a full game eventually provides. Because P.T. is so compressed, the player has little opportunity to settle into a long-term routine. The same location can feel less safe each time it is revisited, and unanswered questions remain part of the experience rather than being quickly resolved by a larger plot or a new region.

Its first-person viewpoint intensifies that closeness. The player sees the domestic environment from inside the character’s position instead of watching an avatar from behind, which narrows the visual field and makes each return feel personal. The camera is an important part of the effect, but the teaser’s identity comes from the combination of viewpoint, repetition, environmental change and interpretation.
What Resident Evil 7 is
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a full entry in Capcom’s survival-horror series. Unlike a promotional teaser, it is built as a sustained game with a larger setting, ongoing exploration and the combat and survival systems expected from a complete survival-horror title. Its story and play unfold around a house and the surrounding setting rather than being confined to one repeating route.
Capcom’s stated priorities
Capcom’s developer interview describes the design priorities as horror and exploration first. The developers explain: “Those are all in this game, but we wanted to start off with the first two – horror and exploration – and get you experiencing those two pillars up front.” Read in context, that statement describes an intentional order of experience: the game wants the player to feel fear while learning and traversing its environment before the wider survival-horror structure takes over.

That emphasis does not make Resident Evil 7 a longer version of P.T.. Exploration in a full game means navigating a broader space over time, while survival systems and combat give the player additional decisions beyond interpreting a single recurring location. The first-person camera is the delivery method for that experience, not the whole design.

Capcom says the first-person view was selected to put players directly in the character’s position. The company’s investor interview also states that Resident Evil 7 biohazard is fully compatible with PlayStation VR and was Capcom’s first VR title: Capcom Investor Relations interview. That is an official historical statement about PlayStation VR compatibility, not a guarantee that every current headset, console revision or PC setup is supported. The similarities that prompted the comparison
The visual overlap is real enough to explain why people compared the games when Resident Evil 7 was revealed. Both present horror from a first-person viewpoint, use a photorealistic visual language and draw unease from a domestic setting. In both cases, the camera places the player close to rooms, corridors and objects instead of creating distance through a third-person character model.
Those shared traits describe presentation, not identical mechanics. First-person horror can support a tightly scripted teaser, a long exploration game, or many other structures. A house can be a single looping route or one part of a much larger setting. The useful question is therefore not “Which one copied the other?” but “What does each game ask the player to do with the same basic visual vocabulary?”
Horror: psychological compression versus sustained survival
| Aspect | P.T. | Resident Evil 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Scale | Teaser-scale experience centered on a constrained, recurring domestic space. | Complete survival-horror game with a broader setting and sustained progression. |
| Primary source of fear | Ambiguity, repetition, environmental changes and the need to interpret clues. | First-person immersion combined with horror, exploration, combat and survival systems. |
| Player’s attention | Comparing successive visits and deciding what a change means. | Learning and traversing a larger game world while managing the demands of survival. |
| Role of the setting | The recurring route is the central object of investigation. | The house and surrounding setting provide the stage for a full game’s exploration and story. |
P.T.: fear through uncertainty
P.T. makes the familiar unstable. The player knows the route, but not which details have changed, why they changed or what action will produce the next development. That uncertainty encourages slow looking and cautious interpretation. The environment is not merely a backdrop; it is the puzzle surface and the source of the player’s most important information.

Because the space is constrained, the teaser can make a tiny alteration feel disproportionately significant. A repeated doorway, corridor or room acquires a memory. The player carries knowledge from one pass into the next, so anticipation becomes part of the horror. This is psychological compression: a small amount of geography produces a large amount of attention.

Resident Evil 7: fear inside a survival framework
Resident Evil 7 keeps the intimate first-person perspective but places it inside a complete survival-horror structure. Fear is connected to where the player can go, what can be explored, and how encounters are handled over a longer play session. The game’s tension is therefore not limited to interpreting a repeated scene; it is sustained by movement through a larger environment and by the consequences of survival decisions.
The difference is one of emphasis rather than a claim that one game lacks every technique used by the other. Resident Evil 7 can create uncertainty and environmental unease, but those moments sit alongside exploration and combat. P.T. concentrates its short experience on the unsettling interpretation of one recurring space. Neither description requires the unsupported absolute that P.T. has “no combat”; the important contrast is what dominates the player’s activity.
Gameplay: what you do from minute to minute
Space and navigation
In P.T., navigation is intentionally circular. Re-entering a known space is the basic condition for noticing what is different. The player’s mental map is small, but the meaning of that map keeps shifting. Progress is less about covering distance than about recognizing a pattern and understanding the next condition.
Recommended Free Tools
In Resident Evil 7, navigation belongs to a larger game world. Exploration is one of Capcom’s named design pillars, so movement has a broader purpose: discovering routes, investigating the house and its surrounding setting, and continuing through a complete survival-horror experience. The player is not simply repeating a teaser loop; the environment supports sustained progression.
Interpreting clues versus managing survival
P.T. asks the player to treat the environment as a set of clues. A visual or spatial change can be more important than any conventional objective marker because understanding the change is what unlocks the next step. The challenge is interpretive and observational.
Resident Evil 7 adds the demands of a full survival game. Exploration and horror operate alongside combat and survival systems, so the player must handle more than the meaning of an altered room. This creates a different rhythm: investigation is still valuable, but it is part of a longer sequence of movement, discovery and survival rather than the entire loop.

Short-form intensity versus campaign endurance
The teaser format lets P.T. sustain a narrow emotional register. It can keep returning to the same source of unease without needing to establish the variety, pacing and progression expected from a complete campaign. Its brevity is not a missing feature; it is the reason repetition can remain the organizing principle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesResident Evil 7 must support a full game. Its first-person horror has to coexist with exploration across a broader setting and with systems that keep the experience playable over time. If you want a concentrated experiment in environmental dread, P.T. is the closer match. If you want that first-person intimacy embedded in a complete survival-horror structure, Resident Evil 7 is the relevant choice.
Is Resident Evil 7 like P.T.?
It is like P.T. in presentation and in the kind of close, domestic unease that a first-person camera can create. It is not like P.T. in scope or in the activity that organizes play. P.T. is a recurring-space teaser whose central task is to observe and interpret. Resident Evil 7 is a full survival-horror game in which horror and exploration lead into a wider experience containing combat and survival systems.
That distinction explains why a player can appreciate both without treating them as interchangeable. Someone seeking the specific sensation of returning to the same corridor and wondering what has changed may find the teaser’s structure more distinctive. Someone seeking a complete game with a beginning-to-end survival framework should look to Resident Evil 7 rather than expecting a longer version of the teaser.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did P.T. directly inspire Resident Evil 7?
The evidence supports comparison and admiration, not a proven chain of influence. During a 2016 interview, producer Masachika Kawata praised P.T. as an excellent demonstration/game while discussing how it differed from Resident Evil 7: GameSpot’s 2016 interview report. The fact that a producer admired the teaser and that the two games share a first-person horror presentation does not establish that Capcom copied it or that P.T. caused the design of Resident Evil 7.
A careful conclusion is therefore: the resemblance prompted public comparisons, and Capcom personnel spoke positively about P.T., but available developer comments do not prove direct inspiration. Similar solutions can emerge from the same design goals—closer immersion, photorealistic spaces and domestic vulnerability—without one title being the documented source of the other.

Availability: an important difference before you try them
The status of P.T.
The original P.T. was delisted from PlayStation Network in early 2015 after Silent Hills was canceled, according to PC Gamer’s retrospective: PC Gamer, “Why a 21-year-old coder finally ported the real P.T. to PC”. That does not establish that every original installation or console copy is inaccessible, and it does not turn unofficial ports, recreations or emulation into an official current release. A current official storefront listing and a complete account of present access methods are not established here, so treat claims that P.T. is routinely available for purchase with caution.
The status of Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard exists as a full game with platform-specific editions. Availability, pricing, stock and edition contents vary by region and platform and should be checked in the current official store listing before buying. The comparison does not support a universal price or a claim that every edition includes the same features.
Which one fits your reason for playing?
| If you want… | The better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A compact experiment in psychological unease | P.T., where an official copy is legitimately available | Its recurring domestic space and environmental interpretation are the experience’s defining structure. |
| A complete survival-horror game | Resident Evil 7: Biohazard | It combines first-person horror with sustained exploration, combat and survival systems. |
| First-person immersion with an official VR statement | Resident Evil 7: Biohazard on a supported PlayStation VR setup | Capcom explicitly stated PlayStation VR compatibility; verify the exact current hardware and edition. |
| A game built around interpreting repeated environmental changes | P.T. | The constrained loop makes comparison between visits the main form of progress. |
| A broader house-based setting to explore over time | Resident Evil 7: Biohazard | The house and surrounding setting support a full campaign rather than a teaser loop. |
A practical way to describe the difference
Use this three-part test when someone asks whether the games are the same kind of horror:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Ask what the player is studying. In P.T., the answer is a familiar space whose details keep changing. In Resident Evil 7, the answer is a larger environment within an ongoing survival game.
- Ask what makes progress possible. P.T. emphasizes recognizing and interpreting environmental clues. Resident Evil 7 adds the progression, combat and survival demands of a complete title.
- Ask whether the first-person camera is the destination or the delivery system. For P.T., the viewpoint helps intensify a tightly focused psychological experiment. For Resident Evil 7, it places the player inside a broader horror-and-exploration design.
That test avoids two common errors. The first is reducing both games to “first-person horror,” which ignores how differently they use space and progression. The second is treating visual resemblance as proof of influence, which the cited developer comments do not establish.
Bottom line
P.T. and Resident Evil 7 share an intimate first-person presentation and a photorealistic domestic-horror surface, but they are different experiences. P.T. is a delisted playable teaser whose short, recurring route turns observation, ambiguity and interpretation into the core of play. Resident Evil 7 is a complete survival-horror game that uses first-person immersion to deliver sustained horror and exploration alongside combat and survival systems. The games were compared publicly, and Capcom’s producer praised P.T.; that is not proof that one directly inspired the other.
