If the P.T. PC port crashes on startup or opens to a black screen, first identify which project you installed. The current P.T. PC Port is a native C++ application with a Vulkan renderer, while older fan recreations were built with Unreal Engine. Their executables, settings folders, logs and fixes are different. Once you identify the project, match its version, operating system, Vulkan capability and game-data format before changing settings.

For the current native port, the most targeted documented fix is updating past version 1.0.1 when the game closes immediately with DLSS Frame Generation enabled in borderless fullscreen. That release note does not promise to fix every black screen or crash. The steps below separate that known case from general launch, graphics, data and platform failures.

Identify which P.T. PC project you installed

The first troubleshooting decision is the project itself. The P.T. PC Port README by LoreanXavier describes the current project as “This is a native PC port of P.T., the 2014 PS4 teaser by Kojima Productions.” It uses C++ and a Vulkan renderer; it is not an Unreal Engine remake. Read the project README at github.com/LoreanXavier/pt-pc.

Signs that you have the native P.T. PC Port

  • The project name or README says P.T. PC Port and mentions a Vulkan renderer.
  • The install directory contains the port executable and a data directory beside it on Windows or Linux.
  • The project asks you to select or provide files from your own P.T. game copy.

Signs that you have an Unreal Engine fan recreation

  • The download identifies an Unreal Engine version, a remake or recreation project, or an Unreal executable.
  • The installation has Unreal-style project folders, launcher terminology or documentation that does not mention the native port.

Do not apply the native port’s data paths, release notes or Vulkan requirements to an Unreal project. Conversely, an Unreal Engine crash guide cannot establish the cause of a failure in this Vulkan application. Write down the exact project name, executable filename and install folder before continuing.

Match “P.T. PC port crashes on startup” to the installed version

Open the project’s releases page and compare your installed version with the newest release that supports your operating system: P.T. PC Port releases. Do not assume that a fix for one launch configuration applies to every crash.

The documented 1.0.1 startup-close fix

The version 1.0.1 release, dated October 7, 2026, states: “Fixes the game closing at start with DLSS Frame Generation in borderless fullscreen.” If all three conditions match your failure—version 1.0.1 or earlier, DLSS Frame Generation enabled, and borderless fullscreen—install a release containing that fix. The release note is specifically about the application closing at startup; it does not claim to repair unrelated black screens, windowed-mode failures or crashes during play.

  1. Record your current version from the launcher, title screen or downloaded release archive.
  2. On the releases page, select a newer suitable release and read its notes before replacing files.
  3. Install the update using the project’s supplied instructions, keeping your existing save and data locations intact.
  4. Launch with the same display mode and DLSS setting to confirm whether the documented case is resolved.

Temporary diagnostic when you cannot update

If the exact configuration matches but updating is not immediately possible, disable DLSS Frame Generation or change from borderless fullscreen to another available display mode. This is a diagnostic and workaround, not evidence that DLSS or borderless fullscreen causes every P.T. failure. If the game still closes, record that result and continue with the platform, data and log checks.

Platform Stated requirement What to verify
Windows Windows 10 or Windows 11, x64 Confirm the OS is 64-bit and fully updated enough for the port’s release.
Linux x86-64 with glibc 2.38 or newer Check the distribution’s glibc version and that the process is running on x86-64.
macOS macOS 14 or newer Confirm the installed macOS version is within the listed range.

The port also requires a graphics processor and driver that support Vulkan 1.3. A computer that starts other games is not automatically compatible: Vulkan feature level and driver support are separate requirements.

Check your GPU and driver

  1. Identify the exact GPU model in your operating system’s hardware information or graphics settings.
  2. Use the GPU manufacturer’s current driver information to confirm Vulkan 1.3 support for that model and operating system.
  3. Install a current driver offered for your exact GPU and platform, then restart before testing again.
  4. Record the driver version in your support report, even if updating did not change the symptom.

Do not buy or replace a graphics card until this check shows that the present hardware cannot provide Vulkan 1.3. If the port opens far enough to reach its settings, turn off optional ray-traced effects and other advanced visual features while diagnosing. Those effects have additional capability requirements; disabling them can distinguish an optional-feature problem from a basic Vulkan initialization failure.

Check that the port has valid P.T. game data

The native port reads data from the player’s own P.T. copy; it is not a self-contained replacement for the original game files. The README says the project is built and tested with the US release identified as CUSA01127, supplied as a dump folder or fake PKG. It also says a retail-store PKG cannot be used because that package is encrypted for the console that owns it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data checks that can explain a launch failure

  • Confirm that the source selected in the port is your own dumped copy, not an encrypted retail-store package.
  • Confirm that the dump is the tested US release, CUSA01127, if you are comparing your setup with the project’s documented test case.
  • Recheck the port’s data-selection screen or configuration and make sure it points to the folder or archive that actually contains the required files.
  • Look for missing, renamed or partially copied files. A failed transfer can look like a graphics crash because the application exits before rendering a useful screen.

The project documentation does not provide permission to obtain copyrighted game data, and this guide does not provide acquisition instructions. If your copy is a different regional release, note that difference when asking the project maintainers whether it is supported rather than assuming it is interchangeable.

How do I find the P.T. PC Port crash log?

For the current native port, settings, logs and crash dumps are stored in the application data location. The README gives different paths by operating system:

System Location described by the README Files to preserve
Windows The data/ directory beside the executable Latest pt.log, any crash dump, and the settings files in that directory.
Linux The data/ directory beside the executable Latest pt.log, any crash dump, and the settings files in that directory.
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/pt-port/pt/ Latest pt.log, any crash dump, and the settings files in that directory.

Collect useful evidence without overwriting it

  1. Close the port after reproducing the problem once; repeated launches can overwrite or append to the evidence.
  2. Copy the newest pt.log and crash-dump files to a separate folder before changing settings.
  3. Note the exact port version, operating system and architecture, GPU model, graphics-driver version, display mode, resolution and optional effects.
  4. Record where failure occurs: immediately on launch, after selecting a data folder, when entering fullscreen, after enabling DLSS Frame Generation, or during gameplay.
  5. Quote the relevant final lines of the log when reporting the issue, but attach the complete file when the project’s issue form permits it.

A log excerpt is evidence to investigate, not proof of a cause by itself. For example, a final Vulkan error can be a consequence of an earlier data-loading failure. Keep the original files so maintainers can inspect the sequence.

When the port opens to a black screen

A black screen can mean that the process is running but rendering failed, that the window is on an unexpected display, that a fullscreen transition failed, or that startup stopped before valid game data was loaded. Use the symptom and log together rather than applying every available tweak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Black screen immediately after launch

  • Verify the project identity, version and Vulkan 1.3 capability first.
  • Check that the data path points to a valid supported dump and that the required files are present.
  • Try the documented DLSS Frame Generation and borderless-fullscreen diagnostic only if those settings were enabled.
  • After reproducing once, inspect pt.log and any crash dump before changing several variables at once.

Black screen after changing display or graphics settings

  1. Restore a simpler display mode if the application still accepts keyboard input or its settings file can be edited according to the project’s documentation.
  2. Disable optional ray-traced features and DLSS Frame Generation for the next launch.
  3. Test a normal window or a different fullscreen mode, changing only one setting between launches.
  4. Record which single change restores or removes the picture; that relationship is more useful than a list of simultaneous tweaks.

Black screen with audio or a responsive process

If sound continues or the window responds, the process may be alive while the renderer or display path fails. Check the GPU driver, Vulkan support and display-mode settings, then compare a launch with optional effects disabled. Avoid force-closing repeatedly before copying the log, because the crash dump or final log lines may be lost.

General graphics triage, kept separate from the native-port diagnosis

Epic Games’ guide, Dealing with a GPU Crash When Using Unreal Engine, lists broad causes such as content or engine defects, graphics drivers, hardware problems, VRAM exhaustion and interference from other applications. That page is written for Unreal Engine and is not a diagnosis of this Vulkan port. Its general checks can still be used cautiously as ordinary graphics triage:

  • Read the application log and crash dump before deciding that the GPU is at fault.
  • Check for an available driver update from the GPU vendor for the exact model.
  • Close other graphics-intensive applications, overlays or capture tools temporarily and retest.
  • Compare behavior with optional visual features disabled, especially when the failure began after a graphics-setting change.
  • Watch for repeatable symptoms such as failure only at a particular resolution, display mode or effect.

Do not convert a generic Unreal troubleshooting statement into a claim that the native port has an Unreal Engine defect. The engine and renderer distinction determines which logs and requirements apply.

Fails during gameplay Optional effects, driver, other applications and repeatability at the same scene. Scene, settings, GPU/driver and the complete log.

This comparison prevents unrelated fixes from being mixed together. A launch crash after selecting an unsupported data package calls for data verification, not a graphics-card purchase; a renderer-only black screen calls for graphics and display evidence, not a different game dump.

Linux and other platform-specific cases

The project issue tracker includes a Linux startup report at github.com/LoreanXavier/pt-pc/issues. The listing alone does not establish a general Linux fix, a responsible distribution, a particular driver, or a hardware cause. Treat it as a place to compare current reports, not as proof that your system has the same problem.

For Linux, verify x86-64 architecture and glibc 2.38 or newer, then preserve the local data/ log and crash dump. For macOS, verify macOS 14 or newer and use ~/Library/Application Support/pt-port/pt/ for evidence. For Windows, verify x64 Windows 10 or 11 and collect the adjacent data/ directory. In every case, include the exact GPU and driver details instead of reporting only the operating system name.

When to report the issue to the project

If the supported OS, Vulkan capability, version, data format and settings checks do not isolate the failure, report it through the project’s issue tracker. Include:

  • Project and release version, including whether the 1.0.1 release is installed.
  • Operating system version and architecture.
  • GPU model and driver version, plus confirmation of Vulkan 1.3 support.
  • Whether the source is the documented US CUSA01127 dump folder or fake PKG, or another release.
  • Exact failure stage and whether it is reproducible.
  • Display mode, resolution, DLSS Frame Generation and optional ray-traced settings.
  • The complete relevant pt.log and crash dump, with personal paths or identifying information removed where necessary.

Describe one controlled test per report when possible—for example, “borderless plus DLSS Frame Generation closes; windowed without Frame Generation reaches the menu.” That gives maintainers a reproducible comparison instead of an unspecific black-screen report.

What the available documentation does—and does not—establish

The project documentation establishes the native C++/Vulkan architecture, supported platform ranges, Vulkan 1.3 requirement, game-data expectations, data/log locations and the narrowly defined 1.0.1 startup-close fix. It does not publish a universal black-screen remedy, a crash percentage, or a measured success rate for any workaround. If your symptom does not match the documented DLSS/borderless case, treat the steps here as evidence-gathering and compatibility checks rather than a guaranteed cure.
