Ozone Skyblock Reborn (OSR) is an expert-focused skyblock questing modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge. Install the original OSR profile through CurseForge, use Java 17 for a self-hosted server, start with the server pack’s 4 GB memory setting (6 GB when available), and keep the client and server pack on the same release. The separate Ozone Skyblock Reborn 2 line is for Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge; its files are not interchangeable with the original pack.
What Ozone Skyblock Reborn is
Ozone Skyblock Reborn is a progression-heavy skyblock pack built around quests rather than a short survival challenge. You begin with limited resources and work through technology, magic, exploration and automation systems. Quests provide direction and rewards while the progression moves toward items that are normally creative-only in vanilla Minecraft.
The project owner, MuggleOrWizard, describes it as “an expert skyblock questing modpack that aims to challenge the player while guiding them through numerous quests to achieve rewards.” That description matters when choosing a mode: the pack expects you to follow a long, gated progression, not simply rush to a standard endgame.
The project page reports 263,136 downloads and a latest update dated March 2, 2026. Those figures describe the project page at that time; they are not a promise of a particular pack build or of current download totals.

Use the correct game and loader version

For the guide and server procedure below, use the original 1.20.1 Forge project. Ozone Skyblock Reborn 2 is a separate sequel, not an incremental Forge update. Its official page lists a 1.8 release dated September 25, 2026. Installing a 1.21.1 NeoForge file into a 1.20.1 Forge instance, or copying its server files into an original OSR server, can produce missing-mod errors, failed startup or an unusable world.
Install the client with CurseForge
The least error-prone client installation is the official CurseForge app workflow. It creates a self-contained modpack profile so the pack’s mods, configuration and Forge version stay together.

- Install and open the CurseForge app.
- Open the Modpacks area and use search to find Ozone Skyblock Reborn.
- Select the original project for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. Check the game and loader labels before installing; do not select the OSR2 1.21.1 NeoForge project for this guide.
- Click Install and wait for CurseForge to download the profile and its dependencies.
- Launch the new profile from CurseForge. The first launch may take longer while Forge builds caches and the pack prepares its files.
Launch through the installed profile rather than adding individual mods to a separate vanilla or Forge instance. OSR is a coordinated pack: changing one mod or configuration file independently can alter recipes, quests or progression assumptions.
Confirming a successful client install
- The profile identifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- The main menu loads without a missing-mod or wrong-loader message.
- A new world reaches the pack’s starting skyblock setup instead of a normal vanilla terrain world.
- The quest interface is available before you begin changing configurations.
Set up a self-hosted OSR server
A self-hosted server gives you control over the machine, files, backups and update timing. You are also responsible for Java, memory allocation, firewall or network access, world recovery and keeping every player on the same pack version.
What you need
- A copy of the original OSR client profile for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge on every player’s computer.
- The OSR server pack that matches that client release.
- Java 17 installed on the server machine.
- Enough available memory for the pack and the operating system. The documented server default is 4 GB; the documentation recommends changing to 6 GB when the machine can handle it.
- A writable folder for the server, plus a separate location for backups.
Download and prepare the server pack
- Download the OSR server pack corresponding to the client version you installed. The server-pack documentation identifies the cited file as Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge.
- Create a dedicated server folder. Keeping it separate from your client profile makes backups and updates easier.
- Unzip the server pack into that folder.
- Open the included
instructions.txtand follow any release-specific notes before starting the server. The instructions file is part of the pack’s setup process; do not skip it in favor of copying files from a different release. - On Windows, run
run.bat. On macOS or Linux, runrun.sh. If the shell script is not executable on macOS or Linux, grant it execute permission using your operating system’s normal file-permission tools, then run it again.
The first run can create additional configuration and world files. Stop the server cleanly after that initialization, review the generated files and then start it again for normal play if the included instructions require a second launch.

Memory allocation: 4 GB baseline, 6 GB when available
The server pack documents 4 GB as its default RAM usage and recommends moving to 6 GB if the host machine can spare it. Treat those as allocation guidance, not a guarantee of a fixed player count: actual demand varies with loaded chunks, automation, exploration and the number of concurrent players.

Change the memory value in the startup configuration supplied by the server pack rather than inventing a new command line. The exact variable or JVM flags can differ between releases, so use the pack’s instructions.txt and startup files as the authority for the build you downloaded.
First startup and connecting players
- Start the server with the platform script after Java 17 is installed.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA in the generated server files if prompted, then start the script again.
- Wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading before attempting to connect.
- Have each player install the identical OSR client release, including Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Connect using the address and port configured for your server. For a private LAN, use the server machine’s local address; for internet play, configure your network and firewall according to your environment.
A client that has a different pack build, Minecraft version or loader can be rejected even when the server itself is healthy. Compare the profile and server-pack version before troubleshooting networking.
Choose Normal or Expert mode
OSR starts in Normal mode. Expert mode changes progression difficulty and applies to the save or server, so decide before a long multiplayer playthrough whenever possible.

/packmode set ExpertUse the exact capitalization shown by the pack. Run the command from the server console or in game as a player with permission to use it.
Set Expert mode in configuration
The alternative is to change the packmode-common.toml setting before the world loads. Make a backup first, edit only the pack-mode value, save the file and then start or load the world. The command is generally safer for an already-created server because it avoids editing the wrong configuration file, while the configuration method is useful when you want the mode selected before first load.
Reapply the mode after updates
The official description warns that pack updates reset the mode to Normal. After every update, verify the setting and run /packmode set Expert again, or reapply the configuration change before loading the world. Do not assume that an existing save will retain Expert mode simply because it used Expert mode before the update.
Multiplayer islands and quest rewards
OSR supports quest reward sharing for multiplayer groups. The original pack can also give players separate islands instead of placing everyone on one shared starting island.

/gog helpFollow the commands and prompts shown by that help output to create or assign individual islands. The exact subcommand is intentionally discovered through /gog help, because the pack’s command set is the authoritative interface for the release you are running.
Plan reward sharing before claiming quests
Quest rewards can be shared in multiplayer, but decide how your group wants to handle them before players claim important milestones. A shared reward policy prevents one player from consuming a progression item while another expects a copy. Keep the island layout and reward policy separate: players may have individual islands while still coordinating quest progress.

The official OSR server-pack page names Akliz as the project creator’s server partner and includes a first-month discount claim. Treat any discount, price, region availability, tracking or commission terms as changeable: verify the current offer directly before purchasing. A managed host is useful when you do not want to maintain Java, networking and machine uptime, but it does not remove the need to match the client and server pack versions.

Version alignment is the most important rule when updating. Download the new client profile and the corresponding server pack from the same OSR release line. Do not update only the client, copy a server folder from OSR2, or mix files from two original OSR releases.
- Read the release notes and the new server pack’s
instructions.txt. - Stop the server cleanly.
- Make a complete backup of the world, server configuration and any custom files.
- Install the matching client and server-pack versions.
- Check the pack mode; updates may return it to Normal.
- Start the updated server and test with one player before inviting the whole group.
Keep the pre-update backup until everyone has connected successfully and the world has been checked. If the update fails, stop the server, restore the backed-up files and return to the previous matching client/server pair.

Troubleshooting common setup failures
The launcher reports the wrong Minecraft or loader version
Open the CurseForge profile details and verify Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge for the original OSR line. If you see 1.21.1 or NeoForge, you selected OSR2. Create or install the correct original profile instead of trying to replace individual loader files.

- Confirm that Java 17 is installed and that the script can find it.
- Run the script from the unzipped server-pack folder so relative paths resolve correctly.
- Read the console output and the included
instructions.txtfor release-specific prerequisites. - Check that the folder is writable and that the startup configuration still points to the files shipped with this server pack.
Players receive a missing-mod or incompatible-version error
Compare the client profile and server pack byte-for-byte by release label, then verify Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge on both sides. Remove any manually added or removed mods from the client profile. An apparently small difference in pack build can change dependencies and prevent login.
The server lags or runs out of memory
Start with the documented 4 GB baseline and observe the server under real play. If the host has spare physical memory, move toward the documented 6 GB recommendation using the pack’s startup configuration. Reduce simultaneous chunk loading and heavy automation while diagnosing the issue, and leave adequate memory for the operating system. Increasing Java allocation cannot fix a wrong loader, a mismatched pack or an unrelated network problem.
Expert mode disappeared after an update
Updates can reset OSR to Normal. After the server is stopped and the update is complete, run /packmode set Expert with the required permission, or edit packmode-common.toml before loading the world. Verify the mode in game before players resume progression.
Players cannot obtain separate islands
Run /gog help in the original OSR pack and use the island commands displayed there. Confirm that the command is being executed on the server or by a player with sufficient permission. Do not use OSR2 command documentation for an original OSR world.
Recommended installation checklist
- Install Minecraft Java Edition and the CurseForge app.
- Select the original Ozone Skyblock Reborn project for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Install the matching OSR server pack only when self-hosting.
- Install Java 17 on the server machine.
- Unzip the pack, read
instructions.txtand runrun.baton Windows orrun.shon macOS/Linux. - Use the documented 4 GB memory baseline; move toward 6 GB only when the machine has room.
- Choose Normal or set Expert with
/packmode set Expertorpackmode-common.toml. - For multiplayer, use
/gog helpfor separate-island commands and agree on quest reward sharing. - Back up the world and server files before every pack update.
- Keep every client and the server on the same original OSR release.
