Oyster’s $550 Tempo Pro is worth considering if you want a compact, hard-sided cooler without loose ice or meltwater—and can justify its high price. In a summer review, Men’s Health’s Mike Richard reported more than 48 hours below 40°F for food and more than three days at beverage-safe temperatures. Those were his results after pre-chilling the contents, in days in the 70s and nights in the 50s; they are not a guaranteed runtime. The limited 23-liter capacity, separately sold packs, and aluminum shell’s susceptibility to dents make it a poor fit for some trips.
What you get for $550
Oyster listed the Tempo Pro at $550 on its product page, accessed October 7, 2026. The Pro’s defining feature is an integrated temperature monitor; the original Tempo does not have that distinction. The can count includes space for two packs, so it is not a promise of 36 cans plus cooling packs. For a weekend with a small crew, the footprint may be useful; for more people or a longer trip, 24 quarts can be restrictive. The Tempo is a passive cooler, not a powered refrigerator. “Ice-free” means you can use frozen thermal packs instead of loose cubes, avoiding the meltwater and wet packaging that can come with conventional ice. You supply chilled food and drinks and freeze the packs before a trip. Oyster says some day trips may work without packs, depending on weather, load, and how long you need contents to stay cold; that does not make the cooler an active cooling device. Oyster says the aluminum internal shell and relatively low mass reduce the energy needed to cool the cooler itself, and on that basis says pre-cooling the shell is unnecessary. That is the manufacturer’s explanation, not an independent comparison. Pre-chilling the contents remains important to the reported performance.
Pack specifications
Oyster specifies each branded pack at 20.5 × 20.5 × 2.4 cm and about 830 g, with approximately 650 ml of active ingredients. The company gives a melting temperature of −2°C / 28.4°F and says the packs are intended to keep perceived storage temperature roughly between 2–4°C / 35.6–39°F during use. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent food-safety certification. Men’s Health reported that a pair cost $60 at the time of its August 2026 review; that is a historical price, so check current pricing. The packs are an extra purchase, and Oyster says any ice pack can help.

Setup choices that affect cooling time
- Load chilled food and drinks when possible; a large amount of already-cold contents helps maintain a cold interior.
- Keep the cooler in the shade and open the lid only when needed.
- Place temperature-sensitive items low, following Oyster’s guidance.
- Consider the outside temperature and how long the contents need to stay cold. Oyster identifies the temperature difference between outside and inside, and the amount of chilled contents, as major influences on storage time.
What the reported performance does—and doesn’t—show
Mike Richard, reviewing the exact Tempo Pro for Men’s Health, said he used it camping and at the beach over the summer. After pre-chilling and filling it, he reported more than 48 hours below 40°F, then observed temperatures begin to rise above that mark. He also reported more than three full days at beverage-safe temperatures. His stated conditions were daytime temperatures in the 70s and nighttime temperatures in the 50s, and he noted that results vary; adding packs can extend duration. Those timings are one reviewer’s experience, not a product guarantee or a standardized food-safety certification. They depend on the starting temperature, contents, pack use, ambient conditions, and how often the cooler is opened. Follow safe food-handling guidance for perishables rather than treating a cooler display or a reported duration as proof that food is safe.

A separate REI review offers context about the design, but tested the original Tempo, not the Pro. Courtney Holden reported that refrigerated contents remained cold to the touch after twelve hours in one test without packs, and that a full 36-can load with two packs remained cold to the touch for three days. Those observations used different setups and do not establish a controlled comparison with the Pro or Richard’s test.
Where the price and trade-offs make sense
The Pro’s value is not simply a question of how long it stays cold. You are paying for a compact hard-sided format, temperature monitoring, and a way to avoid loose ice. That combination may suit a car camper, beachgoer, or road-tripper with limited gear space and a flexible budget. Richard called it a “buy once, cry once” product, but that is his opinion—not a general consensus.

- Price: $550 is a substantial upfront cost, and packs are extra.
- Capacity: 23 liters / 24 US quarts leaves less room than larger coolers, especially once packs are loaded.
- Durability and security: REI’s original Tempo review noted visible aluminum dings after a month and said the cooler is not bear-resistant. It also lacks a drain spout.
- Carry weight: The empty cooler weighs 12.3 pounds; contents and packs add to the load.
- Cooling style: It is passive, so it does not provide powered refrigeration for a vehicle or continuous cooling independent of frozen packs and conditions.
If those drawbacks outweigh avoiding meltwater or having an integrated temperature display, a different type or size of cooler may fit better. Men’s Health points to the Coleman Snap ‘N Go 55-Quart Collapsible Cooler as a lower-cost portability option, the RTIC 52 Quart Ultra-Light Wheeled Hard Cooler for a cheaper wheeled hard cooler, and the BougeRV CRH 21QT 12V Portable Fridge for powered vehicle cooling. These serve different needs and are not equivalent products; the available reviews do not establish a controlled head-to-head performance comparison.

- Consider it if you regularly take short trips, need a compact hard-sided cooler, want to avoid loose ice, and value an inside-temperature display enough to pay a premium.
- Choose a larger cooler if you routinely pack for a larger group or need supplies for longer trips.
- Look elsewhere if you need powered cooling, bear resistance, a drain spout, or a lower-cost setup.
The $550 price is easiest to defend when compactness and ice-free storage solve a real problem for you. The review’s cooling times are promising, but they do not erase the limited capacity or turn the cooler into a refrigerator.
