Oxide Cloud is a customer-owned, rack-scale cloud computer installed in your data center or colocation facility. Hyperscaler private-cloud products are usually provider-managed extensions of a public cloud, but the term covers several different models. The practical differences are who owns the hardware, who operates it, how much external connectivity it needs, which services and guest systems it supports, and how the contract is priced. AWS Outposts and the different editions of Google Distributed Cloud illustrate why “private cloud” alone is not a sufficient product description.

The short answer

Oxide is designed as an integrated on-premises cloud system. You purchase a complete rack-scale platform, place it in a facility you control or select, and run virtual machines, networks, images and disks through a cloud-style control plane. The ownership and operating model are intended to be those of on-premises infrastructure, combined with self-service APIs and a web console.

A hyperscaler private cloud normally extends an existing provider ecosystem into your facility. AWS Outposts, for example, is AWS infrastructure deployed on your premises but operated and monitored by AWS as part of an AWS Region. Google Distributed Cloud is a portfolio rather than one product: connected deployments use Google-managed hardware, air-gapped deployments are designed to run without Google Cloud or public-internet connectivity, and software-only editions run on customer hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means the useful comparison is not “which private cloud is better?” It is whether you want to own and operate an integrated rack, consume provider-managed capacity tied to a public-cloud region, or choose a portfolio edition that changes the connectivity and hardware assumptions.

What Oxide Cloud is

An integrated rack-scale system

Oxide describes its Cloud Computer as a combined hardware-and-software platform for on-premises cloud computing. The unit of deployment is a fully integrated rack intended for a customer data center or colocation site, rather than a collection of separately sourced servers, storage arrays and network appliances. Its software exposes cloud-provider-style APIs and a control plane for compute, storage and networking.

The platform uses familiar cloud concepts: virtual-machine instances, virtual private clouds, images, disks and projects. Role-based access controls organize those resources for teams and applications. A command-line interface and web console provide operational access alongside the APIs.

Ownership and operating responsibility

Oxide positions the rack as infrastructure the customer owns and operates. That is fundamentally different from an on-premises location for provider-owned equipment. In a procurement process, confirm exactly what the support agreement covers: hardware replacement, software updates, incident response, remote access, spare parts, firmware and lifecycle management are commercial details, not consequences of the phrase “on-premises.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Oxide itself accepts “private cloud” as a description but prefers “on-premises elastic infrastructure.” In an Oxide FAQ, co-founder and CTO Bryan Cantrill characterized it as “actually private cloud” and “on-premises elastic infrastructure.” That is Oxide’s product framing, not a neutral industry standard.

Virtualization and guest operating systems

The hypervisor is based on bhyve. Documentation describes support for major Linux distributions and for Windows images that satisfy the platform’s UEFI and VirtIO requirements. Nested virtualization is unsupported. Windows releases that require a Trusted Platform Module, including Windows 11, are also unsupported according to the documented limits. A workload inventory therefore needs to record boot mode, virtual-device drivers, operating-system version and any requirement to run a hypervisor inside a guest.

Storage choices are not equivalent

Distributed disks keep three copies across separate server sleds, with encrypted traffic within the rack. That design provides rack-level redundancy for workloads using the distributed-disk option. Local disks have one copy and are explicitly intended only for workloads where losing the data is acceptable or where the application supplies its own replication. Treating every Oxide disk as equally durable would produce an unsafe architecture.

What “hyperscaler private cloud” can mean

“Hyperscaler private cloud” is an umbrella term, not a single technical architecture. A product may put provider hardware in your building, install software on hardware you already own, or deliver a disconnected system for a sovereign environment. The provider may retain ownership, share operational duties, or leave most operations to your team. Always identify the named product and edition before comparing it with Oxide.

AWS Outposts

AWS Outposts extends selected AWS infrastructure, services, APIs and tools to customer premises. AWS operates, monitors and manages the capacity as part of an AWS Region. Local compute and storage run in the facility, while Outpost subnets can connect to regional resources within the same virtual private cloud.

Outposts is available as 1U and 2U servers, 42U racks and multi-rack deployments. AWS positions it for low-latency access to on-premises systems, local processing, data-residency requirements and application migration where local dependencies make a conventional regional deployment impractical.

The ownership distinction matters: an Outpost is AWS-managed regional capacity installed at your site, whereas Oxide is presented as a rack the customer owns and operates. That difference does not by itself prove that either option is easier, cheaper or more secure; it determines which organization carries operational responsibility.

AWS states that Outposts pricing depends on the order configuration, contract term and payment option. For racks, AWS documentation lists delivery, installation, maintenance, software patching and upgrades, and removal as included activities. Server form factors have different responsibility boundaries, so a quote should be accompanied by a responsibility matrix.

  • Connected: Google-managed dedicated hardware is deployed at the customer site and connected to Google Cloud. It targets low-latency container and virtual-machine workloads while retaining the provider-managed operating model.
  • Air-gapped: Hardware and software are designed for environments that cannot connect to Google Cloud or the public internet. This model addresses disconnected or sovereign operating requirements and is separately scoped from connected deployments.
  • Software-only: Google software is deployed on customer bare metal or VMware infrastructure, allowing Kubernetes use without purchasing the connected hardware platform.

The three editions differ in connectivity, hardware control, support boundaries and operational work. A statement such as “Google Distributed Cloud is connected” or “Google Distributed Cloud is customer-owned” is incomplete unless it names the edition.

Side-by-side comparison

Decision axis Oxide Cloud AWS Outposts Google Distributed Cloud
Hardware model Integrated rack-scale system intended for customer ownership and on-premises deployment. AWS-owned and managed equipment deployed on site as AWS Regional capacity. Edition-dependent: Google-managed connected hardware, an air-gapped system, or software on customer hardware.
Operations Customer operates its owned cloud system; support and maintenance scope must be confirmed commercially. AWS operates, monitors and manages Outposts; responsibilities vary between rack and server forms. Connected is Google-managed; software-only relies on customer infrastructure; air-gapped responsibilities are separately defined.
Connectivity On-premises control is central; confirm external dependencies for the selected configuration. Connected to an AWS Region for the integrated service model. Connected links to Google Cloud; air-gapped is designed to work without external connectivity; software-only is separately scoped.
Cloud experience VMs, VPCs, images, disks, projects, APIs, CLI and web console. AWS services and interfaces on premises with regional service access. Kubernetes and VM capabilities vary by portfolio edition.
Typical workload rationale Customer-controlled VM infrastructure in a data center or colocation site. Local AWS services, data processing or low-latency access to on-premises systems. Connected low-latency workloads, disconnected sovereign environments, or Kubernetes on existing hardware.
Public pricing evidence No comparable public purchase quote established; request a current vendor quote. Order-specific pricing; configuration, term and payment option affect cost. Connected starting price and site minimum are published; air-gapped pricing is quote-based.

Ownership is different from data locality

Putting equipment in your building does not answer who owns it or who can administer it. A provider-managed Outpost can be physically local while remaining part of a hyperscaler’s regional service. Conversely, a customer-owned Oxide rack can be operated on premises without being an air-gapped system. Data locality describes where workloads and data execute; ownership describes the legal and financial control of the equipment; operations describe who patches, monitors and repairs it. Evaluate all three separately.

Ask for a written responsibility matrix covering physical security, power and cooling, network links, hardware failure, firmware, hypervisor updates, control-plane upgrades, backup, replacement timelines, privileged access and end-of-life migration. “Private” does not automatically mean that your staff performs every task, nor that the provider performs any particular task.

Connectivity and control-plane dependencies

Oxide

Oxide’s value proposition centers on a local cloud control plane and local compute, network and storage resources. The exact external dependencies of a proposed configuration should still be confirmed with Oxide, including update channels, support access, telemetry, identity integration and failure behavior when an external link is unavailable.

AWS Outposts

Outposts is designed as an extension of an AWS Region. Its regional relationship enables AWS service integration and management, but it also means the connectivity design is part of the product architecture. Document which operations continue during a regional or link outage, which APIs remain available locally and which workloads require regional services.

Google Distributed Cloud

The connected edition depends on its connection to Google Cloud for the integrated service model. The air-gapped edition is specifically intended to operate without Google Cloud or public-internet connectivity. Software-only deployments have their own infrastructure and management prerequisites. Do not use the connected edition as a substitute for an air-gapped requirement.

  • Oxide is a candidate when you want a customer-owned rack-scale VM platform and your guests fit the documented UEFI, VirtIO, bhyve and TPM constraints.
  • AWS Outposts is a candidate when the application benefits from local AWS services or regional integration and your organization prefers AWS to operate the on-site capacity.
  • Connected Google Distributed Cloud is a candidate when Google-managed local hardware and low-latency access to Google Cloud fit the design.
  • Air-gapped Google Distributed Cloud is a candidate when the environment must function without Google Cloud or public-internet connectivity.
  • Software-only Google Distributed Cloud is a candidate when you already have suitable bare-metal or VMware infrastructure and primarily need the software and Kubernetes layer.

For Oxide specifically, test representative images before committing: verify UEFI boot, VirtIO storage and network drivers, Windows licensing and support status, and the absence of nested-hypervisor requirements. Select distributed disks when the platform should provide three-copy protection; use local disks only with an explicit application-level redundancy or loss-tolerance decision.

Pricing and commercial evidence

Published pricing is asymmetric, so headline numbers cannot produce a fair total-cost comparison.

Offering Published evidence How to interpret it
Oxide Cloud No comparable public purchase quote is established in the available product material. Request a configuration-specific quote, support terms, deployment costs, facility assumptions and lifecycle costs.
AWS Outposts AWS says pricing depends on order details, configuration, contract term and payment option. Compare the complete order and responsibility matrix, not a generic rack estimate.
Google Distributed Cloud connected Google lists a starting price of $35 per vCPU per month, a 96-vCPU minimum per site, and $1,344 per month per site for a stated five-year commitment. Google Cloud pricing was accessed October 13, 2026. These are Google’s published connected-offering terms, not an Oxide comparison or a like-for-like total cost. Verify current pricing before purchase.
Google Distributed Cloud air-gapped Quote-based. Obtain a site-specific proposal; do not infer cost from the connected starting price.

The Google figures describe one edition and commitment structure. They do not include an independent estimate of facility power, cooling, staffing, network, backup, migration or application changes, and they should not be treated as a market benchmark. No neutral performance or comparative total-cost study establishes that one of these products is categorically cheaper.

A practical evaluation process

  1. Define the location requirement. Record whether workloads must run in a particular data center, colocation site, jurisdiction, edge location or disconnected facility. Separate residency from an air-gap requirement.
  2. Define the ownership requirement. Decide whether your organization must own the hardware, merely control the facility, or is comfortable with provider-owned equipment installed on site.
  3. Map operational capacity. List the staff and processes available for rack installation, physical security, monitoring, patching, incident response, capacity planning, spare parts and recovery. Compare that list with each vendor’s responsibility matrix.
  4. Document connectivity assumptions. Identify required regional or cloud links, identity services, telemetry, update paths and support access. Specify the behavior of the platform during a link or region outage.
  5. Test workload compatibility. Validate guest operating systems, UEFI, VirtIO, nested virtualization, TPM requirements, storage semantics, network performance and backup integration using representative images.
  6. Choose the storage protection model. On Oxide, distinguish three-copy distributed disks from single-copy local disks. For any platform, document where replication, backup and restore are performed.
  7. Request comparable commercial proposals. Give each vendor the same capacity, availability, site, term, support, growth and migration assumptions. Ask for one-time charges, recurring charges, facility requirements and exit costs.
  8. Run a failure and exit review. Ask how hardware, software, provider-link, regional and identity failures affect running workloads. Document data export, replacement hardware, contract termination and migration paths.

Questions to put in the procurement record

  • Who owns the servers, sleds, disks and network components?
  • Who performs hardware replacement, firmware updates, hypervisor patches and control-plane upgrades?
  • Which functions require a live connection to a public-cloud region or vendor service?
  • What continues to work during a site-to-region, internet or identity-provider outage?
  • What guest operating systems and versions are supported, and are UEFI, VirtIO, TPM or nested virtualization requirements documented?
  • What storage replication is provided, where are copies placed, and what remains the customer’s backup responsibility?
  • What are the service-level commitments for hardware repair, software incidents and planned maintenance?
  • What are the minimum capacity, contract term, payment and expansion rules?
  • How are logs, telemetry, privileged access and support sessions controlled?
  • How are data and workloads exported if the contract ends or the platform is replaced?

Assuming customer ownership means no vendor dependency

An owned rack may still depend on vendor software updates, support access, replacement parts or identity integration. Confirm those dependencies for the proposed configuration.

Comparing a public starting price with an enterprise quote

A per-vCPU starting figure, a configured Outposts order and an Oxide rack quote can include different hardware, services, commitments and facility assumptions. Normalize the scope before calculating total cost.

Ignoring guest and storage limits

Unsupported TPM-dependent Windows versions, nested virtualization or single-copy storage can invalidate an otherwise attractive design. Compatibility and durability belong in the first architecture review, not after purchase.

How to choose

Choose Oxide when the primary requirement is a customer-owned, integrated rack-scale cloud under your organization’s operational control, and your workloads fit its documented virtualization and storage model. Choose AWS Outposts when on-premises execution is valuable but you want AWS to manage the capacity as an extension of an AWS Region. Choose the appropriate Google Distributed Cloud edition when the requirement is specifically Google-managed connected hardware, a disconnected air-gapped environment, or software deployed on infrastructure you already operate.

The decisive question is therefore not whether a product carries the words “private cloud.” It is which combination of ownership, operating responsibility, connectivity, service scope, workload compatibility and commercial commitment your environment can support.
