Short answer: Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous are Owlcat-developed Pathfinder games. Shadow of the Road is a separate upcoming isometric RPG that Owlcat publishes and Another Angle Games develops. Its announced ingredients—alternate feudal Japan, samurai, yokai, steampunk technology and tactical turn-based combat—put it in the same broad CRPG territory, but they do not establish that it is a Pathfinder sequel or that it will reproduce Owlcat’s rules depth.
The comparison at a glance
The three games overlap in format more than in fiction. The Pathfinder titles use a fantasy setting based on the Pathfinder universe and add a substantial strategic layer around the party’s adventures. Shadow of the Road moves to an alternate version of feudal Japan and presents samurai, honor, allegiance, yokai and steampunk technology as its defining ideas. Owlcat’s announcement also identifies tactical turn-based combat, but it does not provide enough detail to judge the final progression system, campaign structure or complexity.
| Aspect | Pathfinder: Kingmaker | Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous | Shadow of the Road |
|---|---|---|---|
| World | Pathfinder fantasy; the Stolen Lands | Pathfinder fantasy; Sarkoris, the Worldwound and the Fifth Crusade | Alternate feudal Japan with samurai, yokai and steampunk elements |
| Strategic focus | Exploration, claiming territory and establishing a kingdom | Leading the Fifth Crusade and commanding armies | The announcement foregrounds tactical combat; a comparable campaign-level layer has not been described |
| Combat and character hooks | Isometric, party-based computer RPG with character customization | Party adventure combined with mythic paths and crusade play | Tactical turn-based combat is announced; detailed progression rules are not yet verified |
| Production relationship | Developed by Owlcat Games | Developed by Owlcat Games | Developed by Another Angle Games and published by Owlcat Games |
| Availability | Released | Released | Windows Central reports a PC release on March 10, 2027, after a move from November 12, 2026; an official confirmation of the revised date was not available in the cited material |
This makes the most useful comparison one of expectations, not a quality ranking. The two Pathfinder games give you established systems and released campaigns. Shadow of the Road offers a published premise and a developer-publisher arrangement, while many practical details remain to be confirmed.

Owlcat’s Pathfinder games
Owlcat developed both Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. In each case, Owlcat’s name identifies the studio responsible for the game’s design and production, not merely a publishing label. That is why players often associate the Pathfinder titles with a particular style of isometric party RPG, extensive character choices and a second layer of strategic decision-making.

Shadow of the Road’s split roles
Shadow of the Road has a different arrangement. Another Angle Games is the developer, and Owlcat is the publisher. Owlcat made that distinction explicit in its 2025 question-and-answer session, which also said the game is being made with Unity. The distinction matters when you use the Pathfinder games as a reference point: Owlcat can select and support a project without that project being an Owlcat-developed sequel or a continuation of the Pathfinder ruleset.
Owlcat’s August 13, 2024 publishing announcement described Shadow of the Road as being in the early stages of development at that time. Its wording was: “Both games are still in the early stages of development, and we will share more information about them later this month.” That sentence records the status of the announcement date; it should not be treated as a current progress report.
What Pathfinder: Kingmaker is built around
The Stolen Lands as a strategic premise
Kingmaker takes place in the Stolen Lands, a dangerous frontier in the Pathfinder fantasy universe. Its central promise is not simply to clear a sequence of dungeons. Your decisions shape a territory, and the game lets you establish towns and cities while ruling as either a wise leader or a tyrant.

That premise gives the campaign a political and territorial identity. Exploration supplies the immediate adventure, while rulership asks you to think about the consequences of claiming and governing land. The kingdom layer is therefore part of the game’s identity rather than an optional theme pasted onto a conventional quest chain.
Party-based isometric play
Owlcat describes Kingmaker as its first isometric, party-based computer RPG in the Pathfinder fantasy universe. The party format means the player’s decisions extend beyond a single hero: companions, group composition and character customization are part of the role-playing framework. The available description establishes those broad hooks but does not, by itself, specify every class, feat, spell or rules interaction.

Who should recognize themselves in it
- Choose Kingmaker if the idea of turning an expedition into a realm-building campaign is more appealing than commanding a military crusade.
- Expect the story to connect personal adventuring with territorial decisions, not to remain a purely linear party journey.
- Approach the title as a finished, released game whose systems can be evaluated directly, rather than as a preview of what another studio may deliver later.
What Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous changes
The Worldwound and the Fifth Crusade
Wrath of the Righteous begins with the demonic invasion of Sarkoris and the Worldwound. Its narrative and strategic frame is the Fifth Crusade: the player leads a campaign against that invasion and commands armies as the conflict expands beyond the party’s immediate adventures.
Where Kingmaker asks how you establish and govern a realm, Wrath of the Righteous asks how you prosecute a continent-scale war. The two games are therefore not interchangeable examples of one setting. Their strategic layers point the player toward different kinds of decisions—political administration in one, crusade leadership in the other.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Mythic paths as the defining progression hook
The game’s signature character-development system is its mythic paths. Owlcat’s official description lists Angel, Lich, Aeon, Azata, Demon, Gold Dragon, Swarm-that-Walks, Trickster and Legend. These paths shape the protagonist’s development and connect personal identity to the larger supernatural conflict.
That list is useful when comparing the games because it shows how Wrath of the Righteous extends character progression beyond ordinary party customization. The crusade layer and mythic paths operate at different scales: one concerns armies and the war effort, while the other changes the hero’s role and capabilities.
Its established place in Owlcat’s catalogue
Owlcat has reported that international sales of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous exceeded one million units. The cited official page does not expose a publication year for that milestone, so the figure should be read as Owlcat’s reported cumulative international-sales threshold, not as a year-specific sales statistic.

What Shadow of the Road has announced
An alternate feudal Japan
The project is presented as an isometric RPG set in an alternate feudal Japan. Samurai, honor and allegiance are central language in the announcement, placing social loyalty and warrior culture at the heart of the premise rather than using Japan as a superficial visual backdrop.

The setting also combines magical yokai with steampunk technology. That combination signals a world where folklore and engineered machinery coexist. It is a different imaginative vocabulary from Pathfinder’s demons, mythic destinies and established fantasy cosmology, even though both settings can support party-based role-playing and tactical encounters.
Tactical, turn-based combat
Owlcat foregrounds tactical turn-based combat for Shadow of the Road. This tells you the announced battle format: encounters are intended to reward deliberate positioning and sequential decisions rather than real-time reflexes. It does not yet tell you how many characters a party contains, whether combat uses a grid, how abilities are acquired, or how closely its rules resemble tabletop Pathfinder.
Those omissions are significant for anyone coming from Owlcat’s earlier games. A familiar camera angle and turn structure can coexist with very different action economies, equipment systems, status effects and progression choices. Until Another Angle Games publishes those details or demonstrates them in a reliable hands-on build, the safe expectation is tactical combat in a new setting—not a transplanted Pathfinder rules engine.
Unity and the development status
The 2025 AMA identifies Unity as the engine and Another Angle Games as the developer. Engine information can help explain the production context, but it does not predict campaign quality, performance, length or system depth. The available announcements also do not establish a final feature list or a completed release build.

Where the games overlap—and where the analogy stops
Shared CRPG territory
All three projects occupy broad computer role-playing territory. They use an isometric presentation or are announced in that tradition, emphasize deliberate decisions over twitch action, and invite the player to shape a character or group within a larger conflict. That common ground is enough to make the Pathfinder games useful reference points for a prospective buyer.
The comparison is strongest at the level of format and decision-making: an isometric viewpoint, role-playing choices and tactical encounters. It becomes weaker when it reaches specific rules, progression, party structure or campaign management, because the available Shadow of the Road information does not define those systems.
Different strategic identities
Kingmaker is about claiming and governing a frontier. Wrath of the Righteous is about a demonic war, a crusade and mythic transformation. Shadow of the Road is currently described through its setting, social themes and tactical battles, not through a disclosed kingdom or crusade-management equivalent.
Do not infer that every Owlcat-published project must include the same strategic layer. If a future announcement adds an allegiance map, clan administration, economic system or another campaign structure, that information can be assessed on its own terms. The current premise does not establish one.
Different evidence levels
The Pathfinder games are released products, so their campaigns and systems are known quantities that can be discussed as games. Shadow of the Road is an upcoming project described by announcements. A description can establish intended setting and combat direction, but it cannot establish final quality, campaign length, balance, performance or whether the finished game will match the Pathfinder titles’ build complexity.

Release timing and platforms
A current Windows Central report says the PC release moved from November 12, 2026 to March 10, 2027. The report names Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG as PC storefronts. The revised date was not officially confirmed in the material available for this comparison, so treat March 10, 2027 as a reported target and check an announcement from Owlcat or Another Angle Games before making a purchase decision or planning around launch day.
That uncertainty does not affect the identity of the project, but it does affect how you should compare it with the Pathfinder games. Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous are available experiences; Shadow of the Road remains a forward-looking purchase consideration whose date and final specifications can change.
Which game fits which expectation?
Choose Kingmaker for frontier rulership
If your priority is exploring a fantasy frontier and then building towns, cities and a functioning realm, Kingmaker is the clearest match. Its defining question is how your decisions shape the Stolen Lands and what kind of ruler you become.
Choose Wrath of the Righteous for mythic escalation
If you want a demonic-war setting, command of a crusading army and a character arc built around mythic paths, Wrath of the Righteous is the more relevant reference. Its Angel, Lich, Aeon, Azata, Demon, Gold Dragon, Swarm-that-Walks, Trickster and Legend paths make the protagonist’s identity a major structural choice.
Watch Shadow of the Road for setting and combat novelty
If alternate feudal Japan, samurai codes, yokai and steampunk machinery appeal more than Pathfinder’s established fantasy cosmology, Shadow of the Road is the project to watch. Its announced tactical turn-based combat suggests a deliberate battle rhythm, but you should wait for system demonstrations or a final feature list before assuming it offers the same character-building density or strategic scope as either Pathfinder title.
Questions a careful buyer should ask before launch
- How deep is progression? Look for a published explanation of attributes, classes or equivalents, equipment, abilities and respec options rather than assuming Pathfinder-style rules.
- How large is the playable group? The current announcement does not establish party size, companion count or whether every battle uses the same roster.
- What does the campaign layer contain? Tactical encounters are announced, but a kingdom, crusade or other strategic-management system has not been described in the cited material.
- How does allegiance work mechanically? Honor and allegiance are themes in the premise; the available information does not yet explain factions, reputation thresholds or branching consequences.
- When is the PC version actually shipping? Use the reported March 10, 2027 date only as a provisional target until an official source confirms it.
The practical verdict
Think of Shadow of the Road as an Owlcat-published, Another Angle-developed samurai CRPG with its own identity—not as “the next Pathfinder.” Kingmaker remains the reference for frontier exploration and kingdom rule, while Wrath of the Righteous represents crusade command and mythic character development. Shadow of the Road may appeal to the same audience through its isometric perspective and tactical turn-based combat, but its announced setting and production relationship point to a separate game whose final systems still need to be demonstrated.
