The OWC Express 4M2 Ultra is a four-slot NVMe enclosure built to combine several SSDs into a fast external RAID array over Thunderbolt 5. OWC advertises up to 6622MB/s on listed Thunderbolt 5 systems; Macworld reported reads above 7GBps in its RAID 0 testing, but that result is not a promise for every computer or workload. The enclosure is most compelling for people moving large files or editing from multi-drive storage who have a compatible host, drives and RAID plan. Its four slots do not make a single SSD run at the full connection speed.
What the Express 4M2 Ultra does—and what 80Gbps means
The Express 4M2 Ultra holds four M.2 NVMe SSDs and connects to a host through Thunderbolt 5. It also has a second Thunderbolt port for downstream devices, an external power supply and support for software-managed RAID. The 80Gbps figure describes the Thunderbolt 5 connection, not a guaranteed file-transfer rate or the speed of each SSD.
OWC’s product page, accessed October 7, 2026, advertises up to 6622MB/s of real-world performance for listed Thunderbolt 5 systems. OWC lists lower maxima of up to 3200MB/s on specified Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 systems and up to 2800MB/s for Intel Macs using Thunderbolt 3. These are manufacturer figures, not guarantees across all hosts and workloads. A Thunderbolt 5 enclosure cannot make an older host operate at Thunderbolt 5 rates. See OWC’s system-specific performance figures.
Macworld reported reads above 7GBps in RAID 0 in its review, but results varied across its benchmark sessions and tools, including a retest using a populated unit. Treat that as a reviewer-reported result in its test context, not a general expectation. Read Macworld’s review and test notes.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why the array matters more than one fast SSD
Macworld says each M.2 slot receives one PCIe 4.0 lane, or about 2GBps of bandwidth per slot, and describes individual-drive performance as limited. The enclosure’s highest combined performance depends on combining multiple drives in an array; one SSD cannot use the entire 80Gbps host connection by itself. For a workload that needs a single very fast volume, assess the array’s actual performance on your host rather than choosing by the Thunderbolt link figure alone.
Which RAID mode fits your work?
OWC lists RAID 0, 1, 4, 5 and 10, as well as JBOD. The practical choice is a tradeoff among speed, usable capacity and fault tolerance. Macworld used SoftRAID RAID 0 for its performance tests; that test configuration does not establish the speed of other modes.

| Mode | What to know |
|---|---|
| RAID 0 | Performance-oriented, with no redundancy. OWC’s manual says the array’s data is lost if a drive fails. |
| RAID 1, 4, 5 or 10 | OWC’s manual says the array can continue to be used after a drive failure; replace the failed drive immediately. |
| JBOD | Listed as a supported option by OWC. The sources do not establish a single combined-volume behavior or performance figure for this mode. |
RAID is not a backup. OWC advises keeping another copy on a separate storage medium, so an array failure, accidental deletion or other data loss does not leave the array as your only copy. OWC’s support manual covers setup and drive-failure guidance.

OWC supports SoftRAID and says buyers can also use a preferred RAID utility; the manual also includes setup guidance for macOS Disk Utility. Some solutions include three years of SoftRAID Premium access, according to the manual. Macworld reports that the Pro license included with its reviewed configuration expires after three years, while core array operation and rebuilding remain functional. Confirm the bundle and license terms for the exact configuration you plan to buy, since the available package can matter as much as the enclosure.

Drive fit, host support and setup details
The manual supports M.2 2280 and 2242 M-key NVMe SSDs. It says SSDs with heatsinks are unsupported and specifically warns that Western Digital SN5xx series M.2 2280 SSDs are incompatible. With the bare enclosure, four compatible drives are an additional cost; check each exact model against OWC’s current compatibility information before buying.
OWC’s manual lists support for Mac, Windows PC, Chromebook, iPad Pro and Linux, with operating-system and connection-specific requirements. It specifies macOS 14.6.x or later generally, macOS 15.3.x or later for Thunderbolt 5, Windows 11 24H2 or later for PC, and current Chrome OS, iPadOS and Ubuntu versions for their respective platforms. Thunderbolt 3 support is Mac-only and requires macOS 15.x or later. Requirements can change, so check the manual for your operating system and connection before purchase.

The manual lists a 0.7m Thunderbolt 5 cable and 90W power supply in the box. The second Thunderbolt port supports downstream connectivity, and OWC says users can daisy-chain up to five additional Thunderbolt devices. The unit needs its external power supply: Macworld reports that it did not run when the reviewer disconnected it.

Design, cooling and day-to-day tradeoffs
Macworld describes a mostly aluminum black chassis with finned sides, two Thunderbolt 5 ports and a 40mm fan. Its reviewer found the fan audible when running, though not loud. That is a review observation, not a measurement of noise in every environment. If the enclosure will sit beside a microphone or in a quiet workspace, fan noise is worth considering alongside throughput.

Macworld’s review lists four slots, solid construction and 80Gbps performance among the strengths, and software-only RAID, limited individual-drive performance and minor fan noise among the drawbacks. Those are the reviewer’s assessment; the most relevant tradeoff for a buyer is whether a multi-drive array’s combined capacity and performance justify the added configuration and software considerations.
Price and buying configurations
OWC’s product page listed the bare enclosure at $449.99 and the enclosure with SoftRAID at $579.99 when accessed October 7, 2026. It also listed populated 4TB, 8TB, 16TB and 32TB configurations, but prices for those bundles are not included here. Macworld’s case-only review price was also $449.99. Prices, stock and bundle contents can change; check the live listing before ordering. OWC’s April launch announcement listed earlier preorder prices of $399.99 bare and $549.99 with SoftRAID, which are historical rather than the current product-page prices.
OWC lists configurations through 32TB in one enclosure and up to 128TB by daisy-chaining units; check current availability for the capacity configuration you need. The second Thunderbolt port is for downstream connectivity, not a substitute for confirming the storage layout and usable capacity of a particular RAID mode.
Is it worth it?
It is a more persuasive fit for video editors, ingest workflows, image processing and other large-data jobs that benefit from a multi-drive external array and can use a compatible Thunderbolt 5 host. The bare model’s appeal depends on already having, or being willing to buy, four compatible drives and choosing a RAID mode deliberately. If your computer is limited to Thunderbolt 4, USB4 or Thunderbolt 3, use OWC’s lower host-specific performance figures when deciding whether the enclosure’s cost makes sense. If you chiefly need a single-drive enclosure or a quiet, self-contained portable drive, its four-slot RAID design may add complexity without solving your main need.
