Oviraptorosaurs did not all eat the same way. Some early forms, including Incisivosaurus, retained teeth; many later oviraptorids and caenagnathids had toothless jaws with reconstructed keratinous beaks. Worn teeth in Incisivosaurus support plant eating, while jaw-muscle models suggest that some later forms could bite forcefully and process tough foods. Those clues make plant consumption plausible for several members, but a beak or a strong bite alone cannot identify a meal—or establish one diet for the whole group.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell us

Oviraptorosaurs were a diverse branch of theropod dinosaurs. Their jaws changed over evolutionary time: some early-diverging taxa had teeth, whereas many better-known, later forms had toothless jaws. The contrast is useful for understanding how feeding anatomy evolved, but it is not a simple switch from meat-eating teeth to plant-eating beaks.

Dietary evidence comes in different strengths. A worn tooth is physical evidence of contact and use, although it still requires interpretation. A skull’s shape or a computer model of its muscles can suggest what an animal was capable of doing, but does not show exactly what it ate. Fossil associations, such as gastroliths or seeds, can add clues for a particular animal without proving a group-wide menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when comparing oviraptorosaurs with other theropods. Ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs are useful functional comparisons in bite-force research, but they are not interchangeable ecological stand-ins. And beaks evolved in multiple theropod lineages: the presence of a beak is not, by itself, a reliable declaration of herbivory.

A useful comparison therefore asks several questions at once: Were teeth present? Is there wear or another trace of use? What could the jaw and its muscles do? And is the dietary claim about one fossil animal, a particular lineage, or the whole group? Keeping those questions separate prevents an anatomical possibility from being mistaken for proof of a meal.

Which oviraptorosaurs had teeth, and which had beaks?

Teeth persisted in several early oviraptorosaurs. Incisivosaurus gauthieri, Caudipteryx zoui, and Protarchaeopteryx robusta are among the tooth-bearing examples. Many derived oviraptorids and caenagnathids, in contrast, had toothless jaws. Their beaks are reconstructed from bony correlates; the keratinous outer covering itself is rarely preserved in non-avian theropod fossils.

This evolutionary variety is a reason to avoid describing every oviraptorosaur as a “beaked dinosaur” or assigning all of them one diet. A toothless beak tells us about the structure at the front of the jaw, not the full contents of an animal’s diet. The teeth that remained in some early forms offer a different kind of evidence from the muscle attachments and jaw proportions used to study later forms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Beak” also needs a little care. The fossilized jaw bones can show where a beak was likely attached and how its base was shaped, but the keratin covering is a soft-tissue structure and is rarely preserved in non-avian theropods. Thus, descriptions of a robust beak usually refer to a reconstruction informed by the bones, not to a complete fossilized beak that can be inspected in every specimen.

Taxon or lineage Jaw evidence What it suggests about feeding What it does not establish
Incisivosaurus gauthieri Teeth with worn facets Wear has been described as a strong indicator consistent with herbivory in this taxon. It does not prove that all oviraptorosaurs were herbivores or reveal a complete menu.
Caudipteryx zoui and Protarchaeopteryx robusta Teeth retained in early-diverging forms They show that tooth-bearing jaws were part of oviraptorosaur diversity. Tooth presence alone does not determine whether a species ate plants, animals, or both.
Studied oviraptorids: Citipati, Khaan, and Conchoraptor Toothless, robust beaked jaws; modeled jaw muscles Muscle and bite-force reconstructions suggest forceful biting that may have helped process tough foods. Models do not demonstrate a specific food or observed feeding behavior.
Caenagnathids, including the jaw form discussed in the Gigantoraptor analysis Mandibular features interpreted as more suited to shearing; a proposed fore-and-aft jaw movement Anatomy has been interpreted as a potentially different processing style from that of oviraptorids. The proposed specialization is not proof of a particular food, such as eggs or mollusks.

What worn teeth reveal about Incisivosaurus

Incisivosaurus provides one of the more direct dietary clues in the group because researchers can examine wear on actual teeth. A 2022 paper on oviraptorosaur jaw muscles describes its worn tooth facets as a strong indicator of herbivory. That interpretation supports plant consumption by Incisivosaurus; it should not be stretched into a conclusion about every oviraptorosaur.

Tooth wear is informative because it records repeated contact, but it does not label the material that caused it. The shape and distribution of wear must be interpreted alongside the rest of the animal’s anatomy and other fossil evidence. It is therefore stronger evidence of a plant-associated feeding pattern than the bare fact that an animal had teeth, but it is not a preserved meal or a full dietary inventory.

The other tooth-bearing taxa—Caudipteryx and Protarchaeopteryx—show that teeth remained present in some early members of the group. Their dentition is relevant to evolutionary comparisons, but tooth presence alone does not settle what they ate.

The distinction is important because teeth are not a single-purpose tool. A tooth can cut, grip, or process material, and the overall pattern of teeth and their wear matters more than simply counting them. In Incisivosaurus, the worn facets provide evidence that the teeth were being used repeatedly. The herbivory interpretation is an inference from that wear, and the paper characterizes it as a strong one for this animal. It remains an inference rather than direct observation of what was eaten.

Nor does the fact that Caudipteryx and Protarchaeopteryx also retained teeth make their diets identical to Incisivosaurus. Their teeth establish a shared broad feature—dentition persisted among early-diverging members—but the evidence described for each taxon is not the same. It is safer to treat “tooth-bearing oviraptorosaur” as an anatomical description, then assess diet from taxon-specific wear, associations, and other clues.

How beaked jaws and muscles compare with other theropods

A 2022 biomechanical study digitally reconstructed jaw muscles in four skulls: Citipati, Khaan, Conchoraptor, and Incisivosaurus. The studied oviraptorids had short, tall, pneumatised crania, expanded space for jaw muscles, deep mandibles, and robust toothless beaks. The researchers used those reconstructions to estimate bite force and gape.

The modeled oviraptorids had stronger bites than the ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs used as herbivorous-theropod comparisons in the study. Their estimated gape was also more restricted than published estimates for carnivorous theropods. The authors suggested that a forceful bite combined with a limited gape could have been useful for dealing with tough vegetation.

These are model-derived functional results, not observations of feeding. The comparison indicates that the skulls studied could generate substantial biting force relative to the named comparison groups; it does not prove that their owners were strict herbivores or identify a plant they ate. Nor does the comparison mean that ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs had the same ecology as oviraptorosaurs. Their value here is as reference points for interpreting jaw performance.

In this context, bite force and gape describe different aspects of a feeding system. Bite-force estimates concern how strongly the jaw could close under the assumptions of the reconstruction. Gape concerns how widely the jaws could open. A powerful closing bite does not automatically imply a wide opening, and the modeled combination—a strong bite with a relatively restricted gape—was the basis for the authors’ suggestion about processing tough vegetation.

The skull features help explain why the models produced that interpretation. Short, tall skulls, deep mandibles, and room for substantial jaw muscles are anatomical characteristics relevant to force production. But a reconstruction is still a model: it estimates performance from bones and muscle assumptions. It cannot show whether an animal used its jaws on leaves, seeds, animal material, or several kinds of food.

The comparison with ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs is useful precisely because it is limited. It places the studied oviraptorids alongside other herbivorous theropod comparison groups in a functional analysis. It does not mean that all the compared animals shared the same feeding behavior, environment, or menu. The result is a relative statement about modeled bite strength, not a complete ecological classification.

Oviraptorids and caenagnathids may have processed food differently

Oviraptorids and caenagnathids did not have identical jaw mechanics. A 2017 functional interpretation, including analysis of Gigantoraptor, proposed that caenagnathid jaw joints allowed fore-and-aft—also called propalinal—movement during food processing. It interpreted caenagnathid mandibles as relatively adapted for shearing, while oviraptorid jaws were proposed to favor more forceful biting and potentially crushing-related actions.

This is a hypothesis about how different jaw shapes may have functioned. The authors noted that more quantitative jaw modeling was needed. “Crushing-related” describes a possible mechanical action, not proof that an animal cracked eggs, crushed shellfish, or ate any other specific hard food. In the same way, a shearing-oriented jaw does not by itself identify the material being sheared.

These proposed differences help explain why a single description of “the oviraptorosaur bite” can mislead. Even within a toothless, beaked group, lineages may have processed food in different ways. The evidence supports testing those functional differences against additional anatomy and fossils, rather than treating them as settled menus.

Propalinal movement means movement along a front-to-back axis. If the caenagnathid jaw-joint interpretation is correct, that motion could have contributed to food processing in a way different from simply closing the jaws forcefully. The shearing interpretation concerns how the mandible may have acted on material; it does not reveal whether that material was plant tissue, an animal food, or something else.

The 2017 interpretation also should not be collapsed into the 2022 bite-force result. One line of work proposes a difference between oviraptorid and caenagnathid jaw mechanics; the other uses digital muscle reconstructions to estimate bite force and gape for four skulls. Together they make a case for variation in feeding capability, but they are not direct observations and do not establish a universal division in which every member of one lineage ate one food type.

Were oviraptorosaurs herbivores, omnivores, or something else?

The most defensible answer is that dietary variety is likely, with substantial evidence for plant consumption in at least some oviraptorosaurs. Past proposals have included herbivory, carnivory, and durophagy—the eating of hard foods. Researchers have discussed plants, eggs, mollusks, nuts, and other hard foods as possibilities, but the evidence does not establish one universal diet for the group.

  • Evidence consistent with plant eating: worn teeth in Incisivosaurus have been interpreted as a strong herbivory signal. Gastroliths associated with Caudipteryx have also been interpreted in favor of plant consumption, and seeds have been reported from a Ningyuansaurus specimen.
  • Possible hard or animal foods: eggs and mollusks have appeared in dietary proposals, alongside nuts and other hard foods. These are possibilities discussed in relation to anatomy and fossil evidence, not demonstrated meals for all oviraptorosaurs.
  • Functional clues: modeled bite strength, jaw shape, and proposed shearing or crushing-related actions indicate possible feeding capabilities. They do not independently prove whether a given animal was herbivorous, carnivorous, or omnivorous.

Beak shape and tooth loss must be interpreted in that broader context. Tooth shapes and arrangements can provide useful dietary clues in theropods, and changes in tooth form may accompany evolutionary shifts toward plant consumption before teeth are lost. But because beaks evolved in multiple theropod lineages, “beak equals herbivore” is not a sound general rule. The better approach is to combine jaw mechanics with direct wear evidence and taxon-specific fossil associations.

Gastroliths are stones associated with an animal that have been interpreted in relation to food processing. Their association with Caudipteryx has been used in favor of plant consumption, but it should remain attached to that taxon and treated as an interpreted clue. It is not the same kind of evidence as a seed found in a specimen, and neither association by itself proves that every animal in the group ate plants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, seeds reported from a Ningyuansaurus specimen are a specific observation relevant to that individual. The observation can support a dietary interpretation, but it should not be broadened into a claim that all oviraptorosaurs ate seeds. The strongest overall picture comes from putting such evidence beside tooth wear and jaw function, while keeping the source and scope of each clue clear.

Hard-food proposals need the same caution. Durophagy means eating hard foods, and eggs, mollusks, nuts, and other items have figured in discussions of possible oviraptorosaur diets. A forceful bite or a proposed crushing-related action may make some kinds of processing mechanically plausible. It does not prove that a particular shell, egg, nut, or mollusk was eaten. Functional capability narrows the possibilities; it does not identify a meal on its own.

For this reason, “omnivore” can be a tempting but overly broad label if evidence is not tied to particular animals. A mixed diet may be possible for some taxa, but the evidence summarized here does not establish the same balance of plant and animal foods across the group. The prudent conclusion is that oviraptorosaurs varied, plant consumption is well supported for at least some members, and other proposed foods remain hypotheses of differing evidential strength.

What the 2026 Infernogallus report adds

A Nature Communications report published on 10 October 2026 describes Infernogallus jamesi as a diminutive caenagnathid represented by a nearly complete, articulated skull. Its authors interpret the skull as evidence of specialized herbivory and infer that fleshy fruits of flowering plants, or angiosperms, likely made up a large part of its diet.

That finding, as described in the report’s abstract, adds a specific plant-focused interpretation for one caenagnathid; it does not settle the diet of the whole group. The article’s abstract presents an inference from the skull, not a directly observed meal. The fruit-eating interpretation should be attributed to the study rather than presented as a certainty. It fits the broader picture of varied feeding adaptations without making all oviraptorosaurs strict herbivores.

The nearly complete, articulated skull matters because it gives researchers a substantial set of cranial features to interpret together. Even so, the available description does not justify adding detailed claims about the study’s methods or about precisely how the fruit inference was tested. The careful takeaway is the authors’ conclusion: they describe this small caenagnathid as a specialized herbivore and infer a prominent role for fleshy angiosperm fruits.

Infernogallus also reinforces why lineage-level labels need care. It is a particular caenagnathid with its own skull and proposed feeding specialization, not a proxy for every caenagnathid or every oviraptorosaur. It adds another taxon-specific plant-feeding interpretation to a group whose teeth, jaw forms, and associated fossil clues already point to diversity.

How to read a beak or tooth as dietary evidence

  1. Start with the taxon. Decide whether the claim concerns a named animal, a lineage such as oviraptorids, or oviraptorosaurs as a whole. Evidence from one species cannot automatically stand for all three.
  2. Separate evidence from inference. Worn tooth facets and fossil associations are observations; herbivory, shearing, or hard-food processing are interpretations of those observations.
  3. Ask what the jaw could do. Bite-force estimates, gape, muscle attachment space, and jaw-joint movement can indicate capability, but not the food actually eaten.
  4. Look for independent clues. Tooth wear, gastroliths, seeds, and skull mechanics can strengthen an interpretation when they point in a compatible direction, while still retaining their taxon-specific limits.
  5. Avoid one-feature rules. Neither a toothless beak nor a forceful bite proves herbivory, egg-eating, or any other single diet on its own.

In practice, this means reading a dietary claim in layers. First identify what is physically present in the fossil: teeth, wear facets, jaw proportions, muscle attachment space, a joint shape, or an associated object. Next ask what researchers infer from that feature. Finally, check the scale of the conclusion. A worn tooth in Incisivosaurus informs a claim about Incisivosaurus; the modeled bite of four skulls informs a functional claim about those studied animals; neither automatically describes every oviraptorosaur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also helps to distinguish three kinds of statement: “the fossil has this feature,” “the feature could have supported this action,” and “the animal ate this food.” The first is descriptive. The second is a functional interpretation. The third is a dietary conclusion and generally needs converging evidence. Keeping those levels explicit makes the comparison more useful without making it less interesting.

Frequently asked questions

What did oviraptorosaurs eat?

There was probably no single menu for the entire group. Evidence supports plant consumption in at least some members, including worn teeth in Incisivosaurus, gastroliths associated with Caudipteryx, and seeds reported from a Ningyuansaurus specimen. Researchers have also proposed eggs, mollusks, nuts, and other hard or animal foods, but these possibilities do not establish a group-wide diet.

Did all oviraptorosaurs have beaks and no teeth?

No. Early forms such as Incisivosaurus, Caudipteryx, and Protarchaeopteryx retained teeth. Many later oviraptorids and caenagnathids were toothless and are reconstructed with beaks. The keratinous covering is rarely preserved, so the beak is generally inferred from bony evidence.

Were oviraptorosaurs herbivores?

Plant eating is supported for at least some oviraptorosaurs, but it is not established as the sole diet for every member. Worn tooth facets in Incisivosaurus have been described as a strong herbivory indicator for that taxon. Other evidence and proposed jaw functions suggest dietary variety rather than one simple answer for the entire group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a strong bite prove that an oviraptorosaur ate eggs?

No. Bite-force models estimate what a jaw may have been capable of doing; they do not identify the food actually eaten. Eggs and other hard foods have been proposed, but a forceful bite or a crushing-related interpretation is not proof of egg-eating.

How did oviraptorids and caenagnathids differ?

A functional interpretation proposed that oviraptorids favored more forceful biting, potentially including crushing-related actions, while caenagnathid jaw features were relatively more suited to shearing and may have allowed fore-and-aft movement. These are hypotheses about mechanics, and they do not by themselves reveal the foods processed.

What does the comparison with ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs show?

In a 2022 muscle-reconstruction study, the modeled oviraptorids had stronger bites than the ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs used as comparison groups. The result compares estimated jaw performance; it does not show that the groups ate identical foods or had identical ecologies.

What is the evidence for fruit eating in Infernogallus?

A Nature Communications report published on 10 October 2026 describes Infernogallus jamesi as a small caenagnathid with a nearly complete articulated skull. Its authors interpret the skull as indicating specialized herbivory and infer that fleshy angiosperm fruits likely formed a large part of its diet. Frequently Asked Questions

What did oviraptorosaurs eat?

There was likely dietary variety. Evidence supports plant consumption in at least some members, while eggs, mollusks, nuts, and other hard or animal foods have been proposed. Those proposals do not establish one menu for the whole group.

Did all oviraptorosaurs have beaks and no teeth?

Were oviraptorosaurs herbivores?

Plant eating is supported for at least some members, including Incisivosaurus, but the evidence does not establish that every oviraptorosaur was a strict herbivore.

Does a strong bite prove that an oviraptorosaur ate eggs?

No. Bite-force estimates indicate possible capability, not a specific meal. Egg-eating has been proposed, but a strong bite or a crushing-related interpretation does not prove it.

How did oviraptorids and caenagnathids differ?

One functional interpretation proposes relatively forceful biting in oviraptorids and more shearing-oriented jaw features, possibly with fore-and-aft movement, in caenagnathids. These are hypotheses about mechanics, not confirmed menus.

What does the comparison with ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs show?

A 2022 study estimated stronger bites in its modeled oviraptorids than in the ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs used as comparison groups. This is a functional comparison, not proof of shared diets.

What is the evidence for fruit eating in Infernogallus?

A Nature Communications report published on 10 October 2026 describes its authors’ interpretation of a nearly complete articulated skull as evidence of specialized herbivory, with fleshy angiosperm fruits likely making up a large part of the diet. This applies to Infernogallus jamesi, not the entire group.

The Bottom Line

Oviraptorosaur diets cannot be read from a beak alone. Tooth wear, fossil associations, and jaw mechanics point to plant consumption in some taxa and to varied potential ways of processing food across lineages. The strongest conclusions stay attached to the named animal and the evidence behind them: anatomy can show what a jaw may have been capable of doing, but it rarely proves a complete menu.
