Overwatch 2 has three roles: Tank, Damage, and Support. In standard Role Queue, a team contains one Tank, two Damage heroes, and two Supports (often called 1-2-2). The Tank creates usable space, Damage heroes turn that space into pressure and eliminations, and Supports keep allies alive while adding utility such as speed, protection, boosts, cleanses, or debuffs. A good beginner team is not a permanent list of specific heroes; it is a group with one understandable way to start fights, reach the objective, survive the enemy plan, and focus the same targets.
The three Overwatch 2 roles at a glance
Blizzard’s role descriptions are useful starting points: Damage heroes “seek out, engage, and obliterate the enemy”; Support heroes “empower their allies by healing, shielding, boosting damage, and disabling foes”; and Tank heroes “soak up damage and shatter fortified positions.” Those definitions describe jobs, not rigid ability checklists. Many heroes can deal damage, protect allies, or contest space, but each role has a different priority during a fight.
| Role | Primary job | What a beginner should watch |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Create and deny space while starting, shaping, or stopping engagements. | Where your team can safely stand, when your defensive resources are available, and when to disengage. |
| Damage | Convert the Tank’s space into pressure on health bars, cooldowns, and positions. | Cover, reachable targets, sightlines, and coordinated bursts instead of isolated highlight attempts. |
| Support | Sustain teammates and create advantages through healing and utility. | Line of sight, retreat routes, defensive timing, and opportunities to help secure a safe elimination. |
These are team functions rather than a ranking. No role is automatically the best choice for a new player. Your most useful first role is the one whose core decisions you can practice consistently.

Why Role Queue uses one Tank, two Damage, and two Supports
Blizzard’s standard Role Queue composition is one Tank, two Damage, and two Supports. The format gives the team a single frontline anchor, two sources of offensive pressure, and two players who can sustain or enable the group. It also makes each player’s responsibility clearer when learning.

Open Queue is different. It allows teams to select different numbers of each role, so 1-2-2 is not a rule there. A group might choose extra Tanks, extra Damage heroes, or extra Supports depending on the players and the situation. The same questions still matter—how the team creates space, reaches the objective, survives, and focuses targets—but role counts are flexible.
Tank: create space, control timing, and preserve resources
A Tank is not simply a large health bar waiting in front of a healer. Blizzard developer Aaron Keller described Overwatch 2 Tanks as heroes who “take the brunt of the fight while enabling their teammates to secure eliminations.” Your value comes from making positions playable for allies and uncomfortable for opponents.
What “creating space” means
- Claim ground: Move to a position your Damage heroes and Supports can actually use, such as the next corner, a doorway, or high ground that controls the objective.
- Force a response: Pressure an enemy position, threaten an engagement, or block a route so the opposing team must spend movement, defensive abilities, or attention.
- Protect an exit: Keep a retreat path open. Space is useful only while your team can act there without being immediately removed.
- Choose timing: Start when allies are nearby and key resources are ready; slow down when teammates are returning or your own defenses are unavailable.
Do not stand in the open waiting to be healed. Use cover, corners, and line-of-sight breaks while your resources recover. A Tank that survives and preserves cooldowns can create a second engagement. A Tank that dies first usually removes the team’s anchor and gives the opponent control of the next few seconds.

Beginner Tank habits
- Before advancing, identify where your Supports can see you and where you will retreat.
- Walk from cover to cover rather than crossing an entire sightline with no plan.
- Commit when at least one Damage hero can follow your pressure; do not begin a deep chase alone.
- After forcing defensive abilities or losing your own protection, back out instead of waiting for a rescue in a losing position.
- Re-contest only when the objective timing and your team’s return justify the risk.
Damage: turn space into pressure
Damage heroes threaten enemy health bars, cooldowns, and positions. The Tank may open a route, but Damage players make the opponent pay for holding it. Reliable pressure is usually more valuable for a beginner than a low-probability solo play.
Four practical Damage questions
- Can I reach this target? Choose enemies within your weapon range and movement options. A target you cannot safely reach is not a useful focus target.
- Do I have cover? Use corners and nearby objects so you can reload, avoid return fire, and survive a missed burst.
- Who is already under pressure? Focus a target your Tank or second Damage hero has forced out of position. Several moderate attacks landing together are more decisive than unrelated shots.
- What problem does my hero solve? Hitscan, projectile, flank, and area-denial styles answer different map geometry and enemy defenses. There is no universal best Damage hero independent of those conditions.
Synchronize bursts with the Tank’s engagement or a Support utility cooldown when possible. If you take a side route, keep an escape route and return when your team can benefit from the pressure; a flank that produces no threat and leaves the team down a player is not successful.
Support: sustain allies and create advantages
Healing is only one part of Support play. Blizzard’s Heroes page calls Support “the backbone of your team’s survival,” but survival includes damage reduction, speed, cleansing, amplification, crowd control, enemy debuffs, and well-timed damage. Supports still need safe positioning and line of sight; they cannot help teammates they cannot see or reach.

A Support’s priority order
- Stay alive: Position near cover, maintain a retreat path, and avoid standing where the enemy can reach you without passing your team.
- Prevent the next death: Use healing or a defensive cooldown on the ally who is about to be eliminated, not automatically on the Tank every time.
- Enable the engagement: Speed, damage amplification, cleansing, protection, or a disabling effect can let your team win a short window.
- Add safe pressure: When immediate survival is handled, damage an exposed enemy or help finish the target your team is focusing.
Support abilities are valuable because of timing, not because they are used on cooldown. Save an important defensive tool when the enemy’s burst or dive is predictable, while avoiding the opposite mistake of holding every ability until the fight is already lost.
Sub-roles: useful clues, not permanent labels
Blizzard’s current sub-role overview adds playstyle hints inside the three broad roles. Examples include:
| Sub-role example | Current clue | How to use the clue |
|---|---|---|
| Flanker | Receives stronger healing from health packs. | Can use side routes and health-pack locations to reduce pressure on allied Supports. |
| Recon | Reveals damaged enemies below half health. | Helps the team track vulnerable targets and maintain focus. |
| Sharpshooter | Critical hits reduce movement-ability cooldowns. | Rewards accurate ranged pressure and gives more repositioning when shots connect. |
| Specialist | Gains reload speed after an elimination. | Can maintain momentum after securing a kill. |
| Support Survivor | Begins passive health regeneration after using a movement ability. | Encourages an escape-first approach when pressured. |
Sub-role assignments and effects can change as the game is updated. Read the current in-client description instead of treating an old label as a permanent rule.

Build a beginner team with four questions
Once the 1-2-2 structure is in place, do not pick five unrelated heroes. Use these questions to give the team one clear plan.
- How does this team start a fight? A close-range brawl, a dive onto an isolated target, and a long-range poke plan require different heroes and spacing. If your Tank must walk into close range but both Damage heroes need distant sightlines, the team may have conflicting timing.
- Can the team reach the objective? Consider mobility, speed, barriers, defensive cooldowns, and cover for crossing open ground. High damage does not matter if the team cannot arrive together.
- How does it survive the enemy’s plan? Identify tools against burst, dive, crowd control, long sightlines, or heavy healing. You do not need a perfect counter; you need at least one understandable response.
- Can several heroes act on the same target? Focus fire and overlapping cooldowns are more reliable than five independent solo plays. Call or ping a reachable target and commit together.
These questions are coaching tools, not a claim that Blizzard publishes one permanent best composition. Live balance, map geometry, player skill, and hero comfort all change the answer.

Beginner-friendly composition patterns
Brawl
A brawl team uses a durable Tank, short- to mid-range Damage heroes, and Supports that provide sustain or speed. The group wins by taking nearby space together, forcing a close fight, and maintaining pressure through the enemy’s retreat. Brawl struggles when it must cross a large open area under uncontested long-range fire or when teammates arrive one at a time.

Dive
A dive team pairs a mobile Tank and mobile Damage heroes with Supports that can follow the entry or stabilize it. The objective is to isolate a vulnerable target, spend several abilities quickly, secure the elimination, and exit before the counterattack. Dive fails when players enter at different times, select targets that cannot be reached, or remain deep after the first burst is over.
Poke
A poke team pressures from range with a Tank and Damage heroes that can control sightlines, while Supports preserve those sightlines and resources. It wins by forcing the opponent to cross dangerous space, spend defensive abilities, or retreat before the main engagement. Poke loses value when the enemy reaches close range uncontested or when your team cannot maintain a safe angle.
Mixed or adaptation composition
A mixed team keeps one clear win condition and changes one slot to answer the enemy. For example, retain the same general engagement distance while adding mobility to survive a dive, or add a tool that helps cross a dangerous sightline. New players should make small, understandable swaps rather than replacing the entire team after every lost fight.

- Start with the required structure: In Role Queue, confirm one Tank, two Damage heroes, and two Supports.
- Choose the engagement distance: Decide whether the team wants to fight near the objective, jump an isolated target, or pressure from range.
- Select the Tank that supports that distance: The Tank should be able to claim the positions the rest of the team can use, not merely survive alone.
- Pair Damage jobs: Combine pressure that reaches the same area or target. Avoid two heroes whose plans require completely different timing unless the map clearly supports both.
- Assign Support responsibilities: Make sure someone can sustain the group and that the team has a response to the enemy’s most dangerous tool, such as burst or a dive.
- Check the route to the objective: Look for open crossings, high ground, chokepoints, and retreat paths. Adjust one slot if the team cannot move through the map safely.
- Review after a full fight: Swap when the team’s win condition is consistently impossible, not merely because one fight was lost.
How to choose your first role
Pick Tank if you enjoy deciding where the fight happens, managing defensive resources, and setting the team’s pace. Pick Damage if you prefer sightlines, target selection, aim or projectile timing, and converting openings into eliminations. Pick Support if you like tracking several teammates, anticipating danger, and choosing between healing, protection, movement, amplification, or damage.
Role comfort matters because a familiar hero lets you learn positioning and timing instead of learning every ability at once. You can change roles later; learning one role’s priorities first makes team decisions easier to recognize.
Diagnose problems before you swap
| What you see | Likely problem | First adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| The Tank dies before allies can act. | The engagement starts without cover, support range, or defensive resources. | Advance in shorter steps, wait for teammates, and disengage when protection is gone. |
| Damage heroes deal numbers but secure few eliminations. | Pressure is split across unrelated targets or applied from unsafe angles. | Focus the target already displaced by the Tank and use cover to stay alive. |
| Supports are eliminated at the start of every fight. | The backline has no retreat route or is being ignored by the team. | Move nearer to cover and allies; ask for help against the dive before changing the whole composition. |
| The team cannot cross an open area. | There is not enough mobility, speed, protection, or timing. | Use a safer route, wait for defensive cooldowns, or change one slot to provide a crossing tool. |
| Every fight becomes a different plan. | Swaps are reacting emotionally instead of preserving a win condition. | Keep the core approach and change only the slot that addresses the specific obstacle. |
Common beginner mistakes
- Treating the Tank as a shield dispenser: Space and timing matter more than standing permanently in front of teammates.
- Chasing a low-health enemy through the map: A short retreat can preserve your advantage; a long chase can abandon the objective and expose your team.
- Using Support cooldowns automatically: Save defensive or utility abilities for the moment they prevent a death or secure a coordinated opening.
- Changing heroes after every defeat: First determine whether the issue was spacing, timing, target choice, or an actually incompatible matchup.
- Ignoring line of sight: Healing, boosts, and defensive effects generally require the Support to see and reach the ally.
- Assuming a named meta composition is timeless: Balance updates, map geometry, and player skill change what is practical. Learn the job a hero performs and the conditions that make it useful.
A practical pre-fight checklist
- Who creates the first usable space?
- Which target can at least two teammates reach?
- Where are the safe corners and retreat routes?
- What enemy ability is most likely to stop our plan?
- Which Support cooldown or Damage burst should be held for the opening?
- If the first engagement fails, where will we regroup instead of returning one by one?
When a team can answer those questions, the exact hero names matter less. A Tank gives allies room to act, Damage heroes turn that room into pressure, and Supports keep the advantage alive. Build around that sequence, then make only the swaps that restore it.
