Start with tires if your immediate problem is wheelspin or lost grip. Tires are the only upgrade with a directly confirmed performance effect: developer Pete_MG said higher-tier tires increase grip. There is no published percentage gain or guarantee that a particular climb becomes passable.
Do not buy a winch expecting extra pulling strength. In the developer’s AMA, stronger winches were not planned as an upgrade benefit. A winch helps when its cable can reach a tree or another anchor; a portable anchor or jack is the better answer when the problem is that no anchor exists. Repair a damaged vehicle before spending on performance parts, and avoid heavily upgrading a vehicle you are about to replace.
The practical upgrade order
There is no source-backed universal ranking for every part in Over the Hill. Prices, complete effects and vehicle-specific specifications have not been published, so an order such as “engine first, suspension second” would be guesswork. Use the failure you can see on the trail as your starting point instead.

This approach prevents a common mistake: paying for a part that does not address the reason the vehicle failed. Keep a short note of the obstacle, weather, tire condition, damage state and available anchors. Those variables can change the result even when you drive the same route.

What tires actually change
Grip is the documented benefit
Pete_MG’s statement that “if you upgrade the tires then the grip becomes higher” is the clearest performance guidance currently available. It supports choosing tires when the symptom is wheelspin, sliding or an inability to maintain traction on a climb. It does not establish a numeric grip increase, a specific tire tier, or a list of trails that become guaranteed after the purchase.
Test tires without confusing the result
- Record the obstacle where the vehicle fails, including whether the wheels spin, slide sideways or lose contact.
- Check the weather, tire condition and damage before each attempt.
- Install the tire upgrade and leave other equipment unchanged.
- Retry the same approach, speed and line. Compare distance, wheelspin and recovery needs rather than assuming one successful attempt proves every climb is solved.
Weather and tire condition affect grip according to the official FAQ information collected for the game. A wet attempt and a dry attempt are not controlled comparisons, so avoid judging a tire upgrade from two different conditions.
Why a winch is not a power upgrade
Use the winch for recovery, not stronger pulling
The developer said stronger winches were not planned as an upgrade benefit at the time of the AMA. That means a winch purchase should not be treated as an engine or torque improvement. When a reachable tree or another anchor is available, the existing winch can still recover the vehicle; the important questions are whether the line reaches, where it attaches and whether the vehicle can be positioned for a useful pull.
When the winch cannot help
A winch cannot pull from an anchor that the cable cannot reach. If the trail leaves you in an open area, behind a ridge or at an angle with no suitable tree, repeatedly trying the same line will not create more pulling power. Portable winching equipment addresses that missing-anchor geometry. The available equipment includes portable anchors and a jack; these tools give you a recovery point or a way to change the vehicle’s position, rather than improving the motor.

A recovery checklist
- Stop spinning the wheels before the vehicle digs itself in.
- Look for a reachable, solid anchor and choose a line that does not force an impossible angle.
- Use the existing winch when the anchor is reachable.
- Carry portable equipment for sections where trees or other anchors are absent.
- If the vehicle has taken damage, repair it before diagnosing the winch or tires.
Repairs come before performance experiments
Damage reduces vehicle performance, and repair kits are limited. A vehicle that feels underpowered after hard impacts may simply be damaged. Spending Pebbles on another part before repairing it can make your comparison meaningless: you would be testing a new upgrade against a damaged baseline.
Use a repair kit when the performance loss is clearly linked to impacts, then retest the same obstacle. Preserve the remaining kits for situations where damage is preventing progress, because the available information does not establish an unlimited repair supply.
Vehicle unlocks and when to invest
The demo contains three named vehicles: Protector, Burro and Trail Burner. Vehicles unlock through trail challenges. The demo has three challenges, and two of those three unlock a vehicle beyond the starter. Upgrades are installed per vehicle, not as a shared pool across the garage.

The best time to invest is when a part fixes an immediate blocker on the vehicle you are currently driving. A tire upgrade that stops wheelspin on a required challenge can be worthwhile even if you later change vehicles. By contrast, speculative upgrades on a vehicle that is already handling the trail should wait until you know how long you will keep that vehicle.

Pebbles, meteorites and experimenting safely
Where upgrade currency comes from
The developer said points of interest provide enough Pebbles for upgrades on most vehicles. Completing all demo unlocks requires extracting some meteorites, and meteorites were described as infinite. No spawn timer or earnings rate has been published, so there is no reliable farming schedule to promise.
A low-risk spending loop
- Use points of interest and normal exploration to build a Pebble reserve.
- Spend first on the part that matches a repeated failure, usually tires for wheelspin.
- Run the same obstacle again under comparable weather and damage conditions.
- Keep the upgrade if it solves the problem; otherwise stop buying parts at random and change one variable in the next test.
- Reserve enough currency and repair capacity to reach the next challenge and vehicle unlock.
Because meteorites are described as infinite but their timing is not published, treat them as a long-term source rather than a guaranteed short-session income target.
Unmounting upgrades: what you can and cannot recover
Upgrades can be mounted and unmounted. Pete_MG stated that you can “currently unmount upgrades but not sell them or move them to other cars.” The safe interpretation is that unmounting is reversible fitting, not a confirmed refund. The available information does not establish that removing a part returns Pebbles, so do not buy an upgrade assuming you can recover its cost.

How weather, tires and damage alter the same trail
The official FAQ information says weather and tire condition affect grip, while damage reduces performance. These effects interact with your upgrade decision:
- Wet conditions: A route may require more grip than the same route in dry weather.
- Worn or poor tire condition: The vehicle may lose traction even before you change parts.
- Impact damage: Reduced performance can look like an engine or suspension problem.
- Different combinations: A tire upgrade may appear more or less valuable depending on weather and condition.
For a meaningful comparison, use the same vehicle, approach and obstacle, and record whether the route was wet, whether the tires were in comparable condition and whether the vehicle had been repaired.

A decision process for engine, suspension and other unverified parts
Engine, suspension and other upgrades may exist in the game, but the available information does not publish their full effects, prices or vehicle-by-vehicle specifications. Use a controlled test rather than assigning them a universal order.
- Define the failure: Is the vehicle spinning, bottoming out, taking damage, losing speed or becoming unrecoverable?
- Remove obvious causes: Repair damage, check tire condition and confirm the weather.
- Identify the geometry: Decide whether a reachable anchor exists. If not, use portable recovery equipment instead of buying a power part.
- Change one part: Install only the upgrade intended to address the failure.
- Repeat the same test: Use the same line and comparable conditions.
- Keep a result: Continue with the part only when it produces a useful improvement for your current vehicle and challenge.
This method is especially important for engine and suspension because no published comparison ranks their cost against their benefit. It also prevents real-world off-road assumptions from being mistaken for the game’s fictional upgrade rules.

- If wheelspin is the blocker, install tires and retest the same obstacle.
- If the vehicle is damaged, repair it before judging any performance part.
- Practice winching to reachable anchors and carry portable equipment for anchorless sections.
- Use cabins as save points before committing to difficult trails.
- Delay broad engine or suspension experimentation until you can measure a specific problem and know the vehicle will remain in use.
- When a new vehicle unlocks, rebuild its setup from its own symptoms; do not assume parts can move over.
What is established—and what remains unknown
