Short answer: launch coverage does not identify any irreversible, story-gated achievements in Over the Hill. The game’s documented checkpoints are individual progress markers, not proven one-way campaign locks. You can therefore explore at your own pace and return to earlier areas for unfinished activities.
The safest completion method is a regional sweep: use campsites as your return network, record discoveries by sub-area, and check off crates, trials, wildlife photographs, cosmetics, vehicle upgrades and meteorites before moving on. In co-op, each driver tracks progress separately.
What a checkpoint means in Over the Hill
The phrase “story checkpoint” suggests a conventional campaign in which a cutscene or mission permanently closes an earlier area. The available launch material describes something less linear. The Over the Hill Game Guide, updated October 15, 2026, labels its progress model “YOUR PROGRESS Individual checkpoints.” That wording describes a player-specific marker rather than a shared chapter gate.
TechRadar’s October 2026 coverage reaches the same practical conclusion from the game’s structure. Reviewer Lewis Maddison wrote that “over the hill doesn’t have concrete aims or objectives as such.” The game is presented as open-world exploration, so progress comes from what you discover and complete rather than from a fixed sequence of story missions.

No cited launch source publishes a complete achievement list with exact triggers. Consequently, there is no authoritative list of named achievements that can be marked “missable.” The evidence supports a narrower, useful conclusion: no launch-documented story trigger has been shown to permanently remove access to an achievement. Treat that as a description of the October 2026 launch state, not a promise that a future update could never change the rules.
What you are actually completing
Completion is activity-based. The documented loop combines exploration, driving challenges and collection work rather than a checklist of one-time narrative choices.
| Activity | What to record | Best time to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Points of interest and scenic locations | Location or landmark found in the current sub-area | During the first exploration pass |
| Crates | Each opened crate and its sub-area | When you are already driving through the area |
| Trial challenges | Trial attempted and, if required by the game, completed | After learning the local routes and recovery options |
| Wildlife photographs | Animal and place where the photograph was taken | Whenever the relevant animal appears; do not rely on memory |
| Cosmetics | Cosmetic pickup or unlock and its region | On a deliberate collection sweep |
| Vehicle upgrades | Pebbles collected and upgrades purchased or applied | As resources accumulate, then during cleanup |
| Meteorites | Meteorite location and whether it has been collected | On a return trip through completed areas |
PC Gamer’s launch description specifically calls out secrets, cosmetics, upgrades, wildlife and meteorites among the goals that occupy the endgame. That list explains why a region can feel finished while still containing useful cleanup work.
Before your first progress marker
Do not rush the opening simply because a checkpoint appears on the interface. Use the first section to establish habits that make later cleanup reliable.

- Finish the tutorial basics. Learn the driving controls, interaction prompts and the game’s exploration rhythm before attempting optional detours.
- Learn recovery tools. Exploration can take you away from obvious roads. Make sure you know how to recover the vehicle before committing to a trial or a remote pickup. The launch guide frames the game as exploration at your own pace, so understanding recovery is more valuable than racing toward the next marker.
- Start a regional checklist. Create one note for the current sub-area with separate lines for points of interest, crates, trials, wildlife photographs, cosmetics, upgrades and meteorites. Leave an item unchecked when you merely pass its location; mark it only after completing or collecting it.
- Identify the nearest campsite. Campsites function as fast-travel hubs and can fast-forward time. Knowing which campsite serves the area gives you a dependable route back when weather, daylight or a missed collectible makes a second visit necessary.
- Take deliberate photographs. If wildlife appears, capture the photograph while you are there and record the animal immediately. The sources do not establish a “photograph before leaving” lockout, but recording the task prevents an avoidable search later.
Use a region-by-region sweep
Launch coverage identifies two regions: Canada and Algeria. TechRadar describes three Canadian sub-areas and two Algerian sub-areas. The sources do not provide a verified name-by-name map of those five areas, so organize your notes using the names shown in your own game rather than guessing labels from an external list.
| Region | Launch sub-areas described by TechRadar | Practical tracking method |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | Three | Keep a separate checklist for each sub-area; finish a campsite-to-campsite sweep before changing areas. |
| Algeria | Two | Repeat the same checklist and campsite route; do not assume a task type found in Canada uses the same location pattern. |
The counts establish the scope of the launch map, not an order in which you must play. A free-form explorer can move between locations as they appear. A completion-focused player should use the sub-area boundary as a bookkeeping boundary: when you cross into a new sub-area, start a new list instead of mixing notes from several places.
Canada
For each of the three Canadian sub-areas, make one pass that combines navigation and observation. Open visible crates, mark scenic points, watch for animals, and note trial entrances even if you postpone the attempt. Before leaving, compare the list with your map and campsite route. Nothing in the launch evidence says a Canadian photograph, crate or trial becomes unavailable merely because you enter another Canadian sub-area.
Algeria
Apply the same method across Algeria’s two described sub-areas. Keep the region label in your notes because a collection item that is easy to confuse on a long expedition is much easier to relocate when its country and sub-area are recorded. Return through a campsite rather than assuming the most recent road trip is the quickest route back.

Checklist before moving to another sub-area
Use this pause whenever you are about to follow a route that takes you out of the current sub-area. It is a planning safeguard, not evidence of a permanent lockout.
- Have you marked every point of interest you intentionally visited?
- Did you open the crates you spotted, including ones requiring a short detour?
- Did you attempt nearby trial challenges, or record their entrances for a later driving session?
- Did you photograph wildlife that appeared during this visit?
- Did you record cosmetics and Pebbles used for vehicle upgrades?
- Did you note any meteorite location, even if the vehicle was not ready to collect it?
- Do you know which campsite will return you to this area?
If an answer is “not yet,” you have two sensible options: complete the task now while the route is familiar, or leave a precise note and continue. The documented structure supports returning later; the checklist simply reduces the chance that “later” turns into an untracked hunt.
How co-op affects achievement progress
Over the Hill supports up to four online drivers. The launch guide’s “Individual checkpoints” label matters in multiplayer: each driver has their own progress markers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Before setting out, each player should open or maintain their own checklist.
- When the group reaches a discovery or challenge, every driver should confirm whether it counted for them rather than assuming the driver who initiated it completed it for everyone.
- At the end of the session, each player should verify their own checkpoint and collection notes before disconnecting.
Helping another vehicle is useful for navigation and driving, but assistance alone does not establish shared achievement completion. If one player still has an unchecked activity, plan a return trip for that player’s save rather than relying on the group’s result.

Can you finish a region after moving on?
Based on the launch evidence, yes: the practical completion plan is to revisit areas. Campsites are described as fast-travel hubs, and their ability to fast-forward time makes them especially useful when an animal, lighting condition or route is easier to find at another time. The open-world structure also gives you a reason to separate discovery from cleanup instead of forcing every task into one outing.
A sensible two-pass plan is:
- Discovery pass: explore naturally, open obvious crates, photograph wildlife when convenient, identify trials and note anything that needs a specialized vehicle or a second visit.
- Cleanup pass: travel between campsites, finish trials, collect remaining cosmetics and meteorites, gather Pebbles, and verify upgrades and wildlife entries against your sub-area lists.
This approach answers the common concern about leaving Canada or Algeria: the sources do not document a requirement to photograph every animal before crossing a regional boundary. Record what you have done, keep the campsite route, and return for unfinished work.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Trials and difficult driving tasks
Attempt trials after you understand the local terrain and recovery controls. A failed run is a reason to adjust your route or vehicle handling, not a signal that the area must be abandoned.
Best Value
2. Wildlife photographs
Use campsite travel and time changes to revisit habitats. Keep the animal name and sub-area together in your notes so that a missing photograph points to a manageable search area rather than an entire country.
3. Crates, cosmetics and secrets
Combine these on a slow sweep. A cosmetic or secret spotted during a trial route is easier to collect immediately than to rediscover later, while your list protects you from repeating completed roads.
4. Pebbles and vehicle upgrades
The launch guidance identifies Pebbles as the resource used for vehicle upgrades. Track both the resource and the upgrade state: collecting Pebbles without noting what you have already applied can make a finished vehicle look unfinished on paper.

A decision guide for common situations
| Situation | Recommended action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A checkpoint appears while you are exploring | Save your notes and continue at your own pace. | The documented marker is individual progress, not a proven one-way story gate. |
| You see an animal but cannot photograph it safely | Record the sub-area and return through a campsite. | Campsites provide a return route and can change the time of day. |
| A co-op partner completes a discovery | Check your own progress before leaving. | Checkpoint progress is individual for each driver. |
| You leave a sub-area with an unchecked crate | Keep it on that sub-area’s list and schedule a campsite return. | Launch coverage supports revisit-based cleanup. |
| A patch changes an activity or interface label | Recheck the current in-game tracker and update your checklist. | The evidence described here comes from launch-window coverage. |
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The October 2026 material supports a low-pressure, revisit-friendly completion strategy. It does not provide a complete achievement database, exact trigger conditions for every platform achievement, or a guarantee about every future patch. Avoid guides that present an invented list of “point of no return” missions unless they can show a current, specific in-game trigger.
For the launch version, the most defensible rule is simple: treat checkpoints as personal progress markers, track activities by sub-area, and use campsites to clean up anything you skipped. Recheck your notes after updates, particularly if a patch changes the progress screen or adds a new region.
