For a practical starting point, run Over the Hill on Steam Deck at 1280×720 with the Low preset, FSR3 enabled and a 45 FPS cap. Keep vegetation at Low until frame pacing is stable, then test one step higher. On PC, begin at your monitor’s target resolution with the default or a moderate preset and tune one option at a time. These settings are starting points, not guarantees: brief hitches when the game streams a new area can persist even after lowering quality.
Recommended starting settings
The right configuration depends on whether your limitation is sustained rendering load or a short streaming hitch. Use the profiles below as controlled first tests, then measure the same route after each change.
| Platform | Resolution | Image-quality starting point | Frame-rate target | What to test next |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Your monitor’s target resolution; the minimum-specification test reference is Full HD | Default or moderate preset | Choose a cap your hardware can hold consistently | Lower the preset or the most demanding individual option, one at a time |
| Steam Deck | 1280×720 | Low preset, FSR3; vegetation Low for the first pass | 45 FPS cap | Try vegetation one notch above Low only after the cap is stable |
The Deck combination comes from a launch-day player report dated October 15, 2026. That report noted brief stutters when entering areas or turning the camera and did not identify the exact game build, Proton version, route or FSR quality mode. Treat it as a reproducible experiment rather than a promise of locked performance.

Official minimum specification
Steam lists Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-7400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor, 8 GB of RAM, an Nvidia GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX 5600 graphics card, DirectX 11 and 4 GB of storage as the minimum requirements. Steam says those specifications were tested at Full HD resolution. They define a hardware floor for launching and playing the game; they do not promise a particular frame rate, frame-time consistency or graphics preset.

Why a high-end result does not generalize
In an October 2026 review, TechRadar reported very smooth play, including at Ultra, on a system with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 5070 and 32 GB of memory. The reviewer played for about 10 hours in both solo and multiplayer. That is useful as a high-end reference, but it is not evidence that a minimum-specification PC will hold Ultra settings or the same frame rate. The difference in processor, graphics card and memory capacity is substantial.
Steam describes the game as “This is a driving game, not a racing game.” That distinction matters when choosing a cap: stable frame pacing and smooth camera movement are generally more valuable than chasing the highest possible peak number during a relaxed drive.
How to tune graphics on a Windows PC
1. Establish a repeatable baseline
- Launch the game with the default or moderate preset at your monitor’s target resolution.
- Choose a short route that includes vegetation, a camera turn and a transition into another area.
- Drive that route in the same order each time, recording the frame-rate overlay or your monitor’s performance counter.
- Write down the game build, display resolution, preset, upscaling mode, frame-rate cap and whether the session is solo or online co-op.
A repeatable route prevents a change in weather, location or network activity from being mistaken for a graphics improvement.

If the frame rate stays low across open terrain, the system is probably rendering more slowly than your target. Lower the preset first, then reduce the individual option that has the largest visible or measured effect. Change only one setting between runs so you know what helped.

If performance is smooth and then briefly hitches at the same boundary each time, lowering every quality option may not solve it. Record the location, direction of travel, game build and the length of the hitch. A repeatable area-boundary hitch is a different problem from a frame rate that is continuously below your cap, and the available launch-day report does not establish that a lower preset fixes it.
3. Pick a cap for consistency
Use a frame-rate cap that the route can sustain rather than a high limit that causes repeated swings. For example, a monitor capable of a higher refresh rate does not make a fluctuating result smoother. Compare frame pacing on the same route after each cap change. On a PC that cannot hold the monitor’s refresh target, a lower stable cap usually feels better during turns than an uncapped, uneven result.
4. Check upscaling and effects independently
When the game offers an upscaling mode, compare it at the same resolution and cap. Do not assume that a named quality mode is the one used by another player: the October 15 Deck report recorded FSR3 but did not state its quality setting. On PC, note the exact mode you select.

For effects such as bloom, shadows or vegetation, make one change and drive the same route again. If an effect improves image quality without destabilizing frame pacing, keep it; if it causes dips, return it to the previous value. This method is more reliable than copying a preset designed for different hardware.

Steam Deck settings and a safe testing method
Use 1280×720, Low, FSR3 and a 45 FPS cap first
Set the game to 1280×720, choose Low, enable FSR3 and apply a 45 FPS cap. Keep vegetation at Low for the first run. The dated launch report tried vegetation one notch above Low, but it also described brief stutters during area entry and camera turns, so treat that vegetation value as an optional second pass rather than a default.
- Apply 1280×720 resolution, Low quality, FSR3 and a 45 FPS cap.
- Leave vegetation at Low and drive a route containing dense vegetation and an area transition.
- Turn the camera deliberately while watching the performance overlay for frame-time spikes.
- If the cap remains stable, raise vegetation one notch and repeat the identical route.
- If frame pacing becomes inconsistent, return vegetation to Low or select a lower cap that the route can hold.
- Test bloom and spotlight shadows separately. The launch report enabled those effects, but it did not establish either as a performance fix.
What Deck Verified means
Valve’s Deck Verified criteria require full controller support, support for 1280×800 or 1280×720 with legible text, a controller-navigable experience and Proton support when Proton is used. Valve summarizes the display expectation as: “The game should support the default resolution of Steam Deck (1280×800 or 1280×720), have good default settings, and text should be legible.” Verification is a compatibility signal, not a guarantee of a locked frame rate in every region, weather condition or co-op session.
OLED expectations
The launch-day report described more headroom on an OLED model, but it did not establish locked 60 FPS across the whole game. Do not raise the cap to 60 and assume the result will hold everywhere. Validate the route you actually play, including online co-op if that is your normal mode.
Fixing stutter when driving into a new area
Identify the symptom
- Continuous low frame rate: The frame rate remains below the target over most of the route. Lower the preset or the most demanding option.
- Short hitch at a repeatable boundary: The pause occurs when entering the same area or turning toward it. Record the location and build; do not claim that a lower preset solved it unless repeated testing proves that.
- Camera-turn hitch: The spike appears when rotating the view, even at a stable speed. Compare the same turn with vegetation and effects changed one at a time.
- Inconsistent pacing: The average frame rate looks acceptable but frame times jump. Lower the cap to one the route can sustain and recheck.
Use an evidence-based troubleshooting loop
- Record your hardware or Deck model, operating-system and Proton version where applicable, game build, resolution, upscaling mode, quality settings and cap.
- Repeat the same route three times, including the area entrance and camera turn that trigger the hitch.
- Change one variable, such as vegetation, shadows, cap or upscaling mode.
- Repeat the route and compare frame pacing, not just the highest or average FPS.
- Restore the previous value if the change worsens image quality without improving the hitch.
This log also makes a future update easier to evaluate. A hitch that moves or disappears after a game build changes is not directly comparable with a hitch observed on the earlier build.

Controller settings that avoid input conflicts
Keep the default layout first
Steam labels Over the Hill as Controller-enabled, and the TechRadar reviewer played mostly with a controller. Start with the game’s default mapping and confirm that steering, camera control, acceleration, braking and menu navigation all work before changing anything. An XInput-compatible PC game controller is an optional way to play on Windows; no source establishes a required or best brand or model.
Remap one button at a time
- Change a single binding in the game’s controller settings.
- Test the action you changed and a nearby action that might share the same input.
- Drive briefly, open a menu and return to driving to check both gameplay and navigation.
- If two actions trigger together or one stops responding, undo the last change before editing another binding.
- Keep a short note of the working layout so you can restore it after an update.
TechRadar reported one input clash after remapping buttons and found it easy to work around. The practical lesson is to avoid changing several bindings at once: when a conflict appears, reverting the most recent change identifies the cause quickly.
Check controller behavior after Deck changes
When a Deck update, Proton change or custom layout alters input behavior, check it against Valve’s criteria: every essential action should be reachable without a keyboard or mouse, menus should remain navigable, and text should stay legible at the Deck’s supported resolutions. If a custom layout conflicts with the game’s own mapping, restore the default game layout before creating another override.

| Comparison axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Exact output resolution, such as Full HD on PC or 1280×720 on Deck | Pixel load changes rendering work and image sharpness |
| Frame target | Cap value and whether frame pacing is consistent | A higher peak does not guarantee smoother driving |
| Upscaling | FSR or other mode and its quality setting | The same name can hide different quality levels |
| Vegetation and effects | Vegetation level, bloom, spotlight shadows and other changed options | Dense scenery and shadows can affect both load and image quality |
| Input | Default mapping or exact remaps, plus any custom Steam Input layout | Remaps can create action clashes |
| Session type | Solo or online co-op | Networked play is a different workload from a solo route |
| Software context | PC hardware, Deck model, operating system, Proton version and game build | Results from different software and hardware are not interchangeable |
Practical decision guide
Choose PC tuning when the frame rate is always low
Start by lowering the preset, then isolate individual options. The official minimum list tells you whether your system is in the supported range, while the high-end Ultra result shows only what a much faster configuration can do. If your PC is near the listed floor, prioritize a stable cap over Ultra image quality.
Choose Deck tuning when the cap is close but frame pacing is uneven
Keep 1280×720, Low and FSR3, then test vegetation and effects separately. A lower cap that the route can hold is preferable to a nominally higher cap with repeated spikes. Validate both dense scenery and area transitions before settling on a profile.
Investigate the game build when only one boundary hitches
Do not spend time lowering every setting if the hitch happens at the same transition while the rest of the route is smooth. Preserve a reproducible description—location, direction, build, hardware and session type—so you can tell whether a later update changes the behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
Keeping a stable profile after updates
Save your working resolution, cap, upscaling mode, vegetation value and controller layout. After an update, test the same route before changing anything. If the game resets settings, restore the saved profile and verify text readability and controller navigation on Deck. If you use online co-op, repeat at least one co-op route because a solo result does not establish identical pacing in multiplayer.
The most defensible goal is not a universal “best” preset. It is a documented configuration that holds its cap on the routes and session types you actually play, while keeping the controls reliable and the image readable.
