Over the Hill is a relaxed off-road exploration sandbox, not a conventional racing campaign. You drive vintage 4x4s across open routes, decide where to go, solve terrain problems with equipment such as planks and winches, and build progress by finding landmarks, animals, meteorites and other discoveries. It supports solo play and online co-op for up to four drivers in total. At launch, the developer officially confirmed Windows, Steam Deck and GeForce Now; console support should be treated as unconfirmed until a newer official announcement appears.
What is Over the Hill?
Over the Hill is built around the pleasure of going somewhere rather than beating a clock. Its maps contain cabins, viewpoints, natural landmarks, animals, meteorites and portals leading to new areas. You choose a route through that landscape, deal with obstacles and gradually make more of the world accessible.
The game sits between a driving sandbox and a light exploration adventure. Vintage four-wheel-drive vehicles are the means of travel, but sightseeing and discovery are the main rewards. There is no evidence of a traditional season-based race campaign or a leaderboard-centered progression system in the launch description. Instead, the structure comes from places to find, vehicles and cosmetics to unlock, upgrades to buy and harder routes that become practical as your equipment improves.

Funselektor described its goal as capturing “the freedom of art of rally’s free roam, sprinkle in some adventure, and add a touch of peaceful exploration.” That explains the intended pace: you can set your own route and stop to investigate rather than follow a tightly scripted series of events.

How progression works
Progression is discovery-led. Exploration produces the currency and unlocks that improve your vehicle and expand your collection. You are not simply accumulating race wins; you are turning careful route finding into better access and more completion goals.
Pebbles: the currency earned by exploring
Finding points of interest earns Pebbles, the in-game currency used to upgrade your vehicle. The practical loop is straightforward: leave the starting area, identify something worth investigating, reach it, collect the associated reward and spend Pebbles on capability improvements. Because the currency comes from exploring, a player who takes detours and investigates side routes can progress without treating every drive as a race.
Vehicle upgrades open more difficult routes
Upgrades matter because terrain is part of the progression gate. A more capable vehicle can make a rough climb, gap or recovery less risky, allowing you to reach locations that were inconvenient or inaccessible earlier. The available evidence establishes vehicle upgrades as a core use for Pebbles, but it does not provide a complete upgrade tree, costs for individual parts or a fixed recommended order. Expect the value of an upgrade to be measured by which routes it enables, not only by a faster time on a known course.
Vehicles and cosmetics are longer-term goals
Beyond upgrading the vehicle you already drive, completion goals include unlocking additional vehicles and cosmetic items. New vehicles give exploration another way to feel fresh, while cosmetics let you personalize the collection without changing the central objective of finding and reaching places. The game therefore has both functional progression (upgrades and vehicle access) and expressive progression (cosmetics).
Discoveries provide completion targets
Longer-term goals include finding every animal and point of interest, locating meteorites and reaching the landmarks distributed around the maps. Meteorites require special installed gear, so they combine collection with a specific equipment check: you must both identify the opportunity and have prepared the vehicle to claim it. This gives completionists a reason to revisit routes after obtaining new gear.

Portals connect discovery to world expansion
The Steam description identifies portals to new areas alongside cabins, scenic viewpoints and natural landmarks. In practical terms, exploration is not only about filling a checklist in one region. Reaching the right location can lead to another part of the world, making route knowledge and equipment useful for opening up the map as well as collecting rewards.
What you do during a typical drive
- Pick a destination or direction. You can head toward a visible landmark, search for a point of interest or simply follow terrain that looks passable. The design leaves room for choosing your own pace rather than presenting every objective as a race.
- Read the terrain. Slopes, gaps and awkward approaches determine whether a direct line is sensible. A longer route may be safer than attacking an obstacle head-on.
- Use practical equipment. Planks help create a crossing over gaps, while winches assist with difficult sections and vehicle recovery. These tools turn environmental problems into solvable route-planning decisions.
- Investigate discoveries. Look for cabins, viewpoints, natural landmarks, animals and meteorites. Some finds are straightforward sightseeing stops; others depend on having the required gear installed.
- Return with a reward or new access. Discoveries can provide Pebbles, completion progress or a route toward a portal. Spend the resulting currency on upgrades and use improved capability to attempt harder terrain.
The result is a loop of scouting, driving, recovering, collecting and upgrading. If you prefer a constant stream of timed competition, the relaxed structure may feel slow. If you enjoy making your own route and seeing a vehicle gradually handle more of the landscape, the loop is the point.

Over the Hill gives you a world full of things to discover but does not appear to prescribe one mandatory sequence. Its structure comes from the placement of destinations and the equipment needed to reach them. You decide whether to pursue a nearby viewpoint, search for animals, hunt meteorites or push toward a portal.
This balance has two consequences:
- Exploration is self-directed. There is room to wander, take scenic detours and set your own completion priorities.
- Progress still has purpose. Pebbles, upgrades, vehicle unlocks and special gear prevent the map from being an empty driving space.
Players who want a checklist can work toward every animal and point of interest. Players who prefer sightseeing can treat those same locations as optional destinations and concentrate on the routes that look interesting.
Vehicle capability versus sightseeing
Upgrades and equipment are not presented as an end in themselves. Their value is access: they help you cross a gap, recover from a mistake, climb a difficult section or reach a meteorite that requires installed gear. Sightseeing remains the principal reward, but capability determines how much of the scenery you can realistically reach.

That makes vehicle choice and upgrade spending a judgment call. A capability-focused approach prioritizes improvements that remove obstacles from routes you want to drive. A sightseeing-focused approach can delay optimization and spend more time on viewpoints, landmarks and wildlife. Since the available information does not specify an exact upgrade tree or stat values, there is no evidence-based “best build”; choose upgrades according to the terrain and discoveries you are pursuing.

Solo play
Yes. The game supports single-player driving, so you can explore at your own pace and handle route decisions without coordinating with anyone else. Solo is also the clearest way to learn how planks, winches and recovery work before adding the logistics of a shared expedition.
Online co-op for up to four total players
Online co-op supports up to four drivers total: you plus as many as three friends. Companions can share the burden of exploration, which is useful when a route requires scouting, recovery or repeated attempts at a difficult obstacle.
“Up to four” means four players in the session, not four additional friends joining one host. The authoritative launch listing describes online co-op and does not establish local split-screen support. Do not assume that two people can share one console or one PC display unless a later platform-specific announcement confirms it.

Platform support and availability
The developer’s October 14 launch announcement officially confirms Windows, Steam Deck and play through GeForce Now. It also says more platforms and systems are planned. Steam identifies the listed build as compatible with Windows and SteamOS/Linux and requires an internet connection.

Steam Deck
Steam Deck is explicitly included in the developer’s launch support statement. Keep the device connected to the internet for installation, updates and any online features, and leave enough storage for the game and future patches. The launch statement does not specify a battery-life target, graphics preset or frame-rate guarantee.
GeForce Now
Cloud play can reduce the need for a gaming PC, but it depends on a supported account, a stable connection and the service’s current catalog. Because cloud availability and regional support are service-side details, verify that the game is currently listed for your location before purchasing specifically for streaming.
Who will enjoy it?
- Choose it if you like: relaxed driving, open-ended route finding, environmental puzzles, collectible-style completion and gradual vehicle improvement.
- Expect a different experience if you want: a tightly scripted campaign, constant races, competitive leaderboards or a guaranteed local multiplayer mode.

The game is most coherent when treated as an exploration trip with mechanical problems to solve. The vehicles provide the verbs—drive, recover, cross and upgrade—while the landscape supplies the reasons to keep going.
