Choose Outriders if you want a contained third-person campaign, four class-based builds, moddable equipment, and co-op for up to three players. Choose Destiny 2 if you want a much larger shared activity catalogue, cross-platform fireteams, and a game that combines free content with paid expansions, packs, passes, and dungeon access.
There is an important 2026 qualification: Bungie says Destiny 2’s planned live-service content updates ended with Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026. The game remains playable, and Bungie may still issue stability hotfixes, but you should not buy it expecting the previous cadence of planned content releases. Outriders is the more bounded campaign-and-build experience; Destiny 2 is the broader activity platform.

A campaign-first loop
Outriders is structured as a third-person shooter with role-based abilities, loot drops, and a campaign that can be played solo or cooperatively. Its 1–3 player format keeps a session understandable: you make a character, follow the story, improve equipment, and repeat missions at a higher challenge when you want more demanding fights.

That bounded structure suits players who want to know what the main loop is. You are not choosing among a large catalogue of unrelated playlists before every session. You are progressing a character through missions and build decisions, then using the resulting gear to tackle tougher content.
Four classes and editable equipment
Square Enix describes four unique classes, each with its own skill trees. The class choice changes how you approach combat, while weapon and armor modification lets you tune the character beyond the initial class selection.
Guns and gear can be customized and upgraded. In practical terms, loot is not merely a replacement ladder in which every new item automatically invalidates the previous one. Mod choices and the interaction between equipment and skills give you reasons to keep, alter, and compare drops.

What Worldslayer adds
Worldslayer extends the progression model with PAX trees, Ascension progression, Apocalypse Gear, and the Trial of Tarya Gratar endgame activity. These systems matter if your interest is in continuing to refine a build after the base campaign rather than stopping when the story is complete.
Because Worldslayer is an expansion, you should confirm which edition includes it. Square Enix lists an Outriders Complete Edition containing the base game, Worldslayer, and the Hell’s Rangers content pack, but current retail stock, format, and regional price are not established in the supplied material.
Solo play has an always-online requirement
Outriders can be played alone, but its official support information says an internet connection is required even in single-player. That makes it a poor fit if your priority is a game that works during travel, in an unreliable connection, or entirely offline. It also means that “solo” describes the number of people in your session, not an offline mode.

What playing Destiny 2 feels like
A catalogue of activities
Destiny 2 is organized around a shared activity structure rather than one compact campaign loop. Bungie documents Vanguard activities, the competitive Crucible, raids, dungeons, and destination activities. Each category has a different rhythm: repeatable missions and strikes, player-versus-player matches, coordinated endgame encounters, or exploration in destinations.

A single installation can serve different moods and group sizes, but it also creates more friction for a new player. You must learn which activity you want, whether it is currently available, and whether your account owns the content that unlocks it.
Cross-platform fireteams
Destiny 2 cross-play allows friends on supported platforms to form fireteams. It is enabled by default. For non-competitive activities, matchmaking spans platforms. Competitive matchmaking separates console and PC pools, so the rules are not identical in every mode.
Before planning a session, check that everyone is using a supported platform and understand which activity you intend to launch. Cross-play solves the platform problem, but it does not remove ownership requirements for expansions, packs, or dungeon content.
Free entry does not mean all content is free
Destiny 2 has content available at no cost, but Bungie’s documentation distinguishes free content from paid expansions, packs, Reward Passes, and Dungeon Keys. Selected raids and dungeons require the corresponding ownership.

The 2026 support change
Bungie’s official support statement says: “Following the release of Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026, Destiny 2 will no longer receive planned live-service content updates.” This is a support-status statement, not a claim that the game has shut down or that existing activities are unavailable.
For a buyer, the distinction is straightforward: Destiny 2 can still be a large existing game to play, but you should not base your purchase on an expectation of a continuing schedule of planned seasonal or live-service content updates. Bungie may issue stability hotfixes, and the game is intended to remain playable.
Builds and progression: which approach suits you?
Choose Outriders for a contained build project
Outriders gives you four classes and class-specific skill trees inside a comparatively narrow player-count and campaign framework. You can focus on one character, adjust weapons and gear, and use Worldslayer’s PAX trees, Ascension, Apocalypse Gear, and Trial of Tarya Gratar to extend that project.
This is a good fit when your satisfaction comes from making one build work better, testing gear combinations, and replaying content at greater challenge. The trade-off is that the experience is not designed as a giant social hub with a separate playlist for every kind of player.
Choose Destiny 2 for activity-driven loadouts
Destiny 2 ties weapons, armor, abilities, and progression to a wide range of activities. You may build differently for Vanguard missions, Crucible matches, a dungeon, or a raid because each mode rewards different preparation and group coordination.
The supplied official sources do not establish that Destiny 2 has more or less build depth than Outriders. They describe different systems and structures, so the fair comparison is about what you enjoy doing with a build: Outriders emphasizes a character-centered campaign loop, while Destiny 2 asks you to adapt loadouts to a broad activity catalogue.

Co-op, matchmaking, and platform decisions
Outriders: small groups and drop-in play
Outriders supports one to three players. Square Enix describes drop-in, drop-out co-op, so a host can play with up to two friends rather than assembling a large raid team. That makes it suitable for a consistent pair or trio that wants to advance through a campaign together.
Its official product and support material list PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Stadia, but the current compatibility matrix is not established here. Stadia itself is no longer an operating platform, so do not assume that every platform named in older product material is still available. Verify the store listing and current support information for your device.
Destiny 2: larger groups and cross-platform sessions
Destiny 2 is the stronger choice when your friends are distributed across supported platforms or when you want activities that scale beyond a three-person party. Cross-play allows platform-spanning fireteams, and non-competitive matchmaking includes players across platforms.
Competitive matchmaking is handled differently: Bungie documents separate console and PC pools. If your group includes players on different device types, confirm how the specific competitive mode handles that combination before you queue.
Questions to answer before inviting friends
- Are all players on a platform currently supported by the game?
- Does everyone own the campaign, expansion, pack, or Dungeon Key required for the activity?
- Is the activity competitive, with console-and-PC matchmaking rules, or non-competitive, with cross-platform matchmaking?
- Does anyone need to account for Outriders’ internet requirement even when playing alone?

Outriders purchase checklist
- Choose the platform on which you will play and verify that the current store listing supports it.
- Decide whether the base Outriders campaign is enough or whether you want Worldslayer’s additional progression and Trial of Tarya Gratar.
- If you want the bundled route, check whether the Outriders Complete Edition is currently sold in your region and whether it contains the base game, Worldslayer, and Hell’s Rangers content pack as described by Square Enix.

Assuming solo means offline

Assuming a free Destiny 2 install unlocks every activity
It does not. Check the entitlement for the specific campaign, raid, dungeon, pack, pass, or key you want. A friend owning an activity does not automatically grant it to the rest of the fireteam.

Using old platform lists as proof of current availability
Outriders product material lists Stadia alongside PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, but Stadia is no longer an operating service. Treat older platform lists as historical product information and verify current support before purchase.

- Choose your preferred loop. Select Outriders for a campaign-and-build path. Select Destiny 2 for a menu of strikes, Crucible, raids, dungeons, and destination activities.
- Check connectivity. Outriders requires internet access even for solo play. Destiny 2 also depends on online services for its shared activities.
- Map the purchase. For Outriders, compare the base game with the Worldslayer-containing Complete Edition. For Destiny 2, identify the exact paid entitlement required by your target activity.
