First check whether you’re using new Outlook or classic Outlook: the troubleshooting steps are different. For classic Outlook, test safe mode to isolate add-ins, then try a new profile and repair the data file or Office installation. For new Outlook, restart the app and reinstall it from Microsoft Store if restarting does not help. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
Identify which Outlook you have
Microsoft maintains separate guidance for new Outlook and classic Outlook. Some troubleshooting steps and the startup troubleshooter for classic Outlook do not apply to new Outlook, so confirm which app is installed before proceeding. Microsoft’s classic Outlook troubleshooting guidance and startup guidance describe different routes for the two versions.
| Outlook version | Relevant troubleshooting route |
|---|---|
| Classic Outlook | Safe mode and add-in isolation, a new profile, data-file repair, Office repair, or the Get Help startup troubleshooter |
| New Outlook | End the app task and reopen it; if necessary, uninstall and reinstall through Microsoft Store |
Fix classic Outlook that will not start
1. Test Outlook in safe mode
Safe mode starts classic Outlook without add-ins. If Outlook opens this way, an add-in is a possible source of the startup problem; Microsoft Support notes that “Sometimes add-ins can conflict with classic Outlook for Windows.” If safe mode also fails, move on to the next step rather than treating add-ins as the confirmed cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Close Outlook.
- Press Windows key + R, type
outlook.exe /safe, and select OK. - If Outlook opens, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- Next to Manage, choose COM Add-ins, select Go, and clear the add-in checkboxes.
- Restart Outlook. If it now opens normally, re-enable add-ins one at a time, restarting after each change, until you find the one associated with the failure. Disable the suspected add-in rather than deleting it.
2. Test with a new Outlook profile
A classic Outlook profile holds settings and can become corrupt. Create a new profile and test Outlook with it, following Microsoft’s profile instructions. If Outlook works with the new profile, Microsoft says that identifies the original profile as corrupt and as the source of the problem being tested.

3. Repair the Outlook data file
Microsoft documents the Inbox Repair Tool, scanpst.exe, for scanning classic Outlook data files and repairing errors. Use the instructions in Microsoft’s Outlook data-file repair guidance. This applies to classic Outlook data files; it is not a general repair step for new Outlook.
4. Repair Office
If the earlier steps do not help, Microsoft recommends trying an Office quick repair, then an online repair if quick repair does not resolve the issue. Use Windows’ installed-app repair options as described in Microsoft’s Office repair guidance.

5. Run the classic Outlook startup troubleshooter
Microsoft offers a startup troubleshooter through the Windows Get Help app. It requires Windows 10 or later, must be run on the same Windows PC where classic Outlook is installed, and does not work with new Outlook. Open Get Help and follow its classic Outlook startup troubleshooting prompts.
Fix new Outlook that will not start
Restart the app
Open Task Manager, end the Microsoft Outlook task, then launch new Outlook again. This is the restart step in Microsoft’s Outlook startup guidance.

Reinstall through Microsoft Store
If restarting does not work, uninstall new Outlook and reinstall it from Microsoft Store. Microsoft notes that you may need to add your accounts again if they are not added automatically. Do not use the classic Outlook safe-mode, profile, or data-file procedures as a substitute for this new Outlook route.
Check whether a known issue matches your symptoms
Microsoft’s classic Outlook known-issues page was marked last updated in October 2026. The October entries shown were a shared-mailbox service-assisted search issue, with a fix in progress, and voicemail audio attachments not being visible, marked fixed. Neither establishes a general failure to open Outlook. Known-issue listings and statuses can change, so compare the current page with the specific behavior you see rather than assuming an unrelated listed issue explains a launch failure.

When the cause is still unclear
The available troubleshooting guidance does not establish one universal cause, and the right next step depends on the Outlook version and what happens during startup. Note any error message and whether classic Outlook opens in safe mode or with a new profile; those results help distinguish an add-in or profile problem from other startup failures. The cited procedures are troubleshooting options, not a guarantee that Outlook will open.
