In Outlook, a message shown in the Reading Pane can be marked as read when you select another message. To stop that transition, turn off “Mark item as read when the selection changes” in the classic Windows Reading Pane options, if your Outlook version exposes it. This is a configurable Outlook behavior—not a rule that applies to every email or messaging app.
What “mark as read when the selection changes” means
When you select a message, Outlook may display it in the Reading Pane and mark it as read as you move on to another message. Microsoft Support describes the behavior directly: “Outlook marks a message as read when you select it.” The setting controls whether changing the selection triggers that read-state change.
This is distinct from marking a message read after it has been visible in the Reading Pane for a set amount of time. Depending on your Outlook client, you may be able to control the viewing delay separately from the selection-change behavior.

How to stop Outlook from marking messages read on selection change
First confirm which Outlook client you use. The following path is for the classic Windows interface documented by Microsoft; it may not be available in every Windows version or Outlook client.

- In Outlook, select File > Options > Advanced.
- Under Outlook panes, select Reading Pane.
- Clear Mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane and Mark item as read when the selection changes if you want to prevent both automatic transitions.
- Select OK to apply the changes.
Microsoft’s instructions cover Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, and Outlook 2021, while noting that the function is not available on all Windows versions. If you cannot find the Reading Pane controls at that path, check the options for your particular client rather than assuming the setting is supported there. See Microsoft’s Outlook instructions for marking messages read or unread.
Choose the behavior that fits your reading workflow
- Brief previews should stay unread: Turn off the selection-change option, so moving through messages does not by itself mark them read. If available, also turn off the Reading Pane viewed option.
- You want a buffer before a message becomes read: Keep the viewed-in-Reading-Pane behavior enabled and set a delay, if your client offers one. Microsoft documents a wait in seconds before marking an item read when viewed.
- You want an explicit decision: Turn off automatic marking options where available, then use Mark as Read or Mark as Unread when appropriate. Microsoft’s documented shortcuts are Ctrl+Q to mark read and Ctrl+U to mark unread.
Read-state controls differ across products
“Mark as read” does not work the same way in every app. Documentation for different products describes different triggers and controls; these examples illustrate product-specific behavior rather than an industry-wide convention.

Why a message may still appear read
Turning off selection-change marking does not necessarily turn off every way Outlook can mark a message read. If a message becomes read while you view it, check the separate Reading Pane viewed option and its delay. If it was marked read by mistake, use Mark as Unread or Ctrl+U in the Outlook clients where Microsoft’s documented shortcut applies.
