The right outdoor TV starts with the sunlight that reaches the screen: choose a full-shade, partial-sun, or full-sun model to match its location. Weather protection and smart features are separate considerations, not additional exposure classes. The five groupings below are a practical way to compare those choices—not a formal industry standard—and a single TV can fit several at once.
What are the five useful types of outdoor TV?
Outdoor-TV makers most clearly distinguish models by screen exposure. Furrion lists full-shade, partial-sun, and full-sun categories; SunBriteTV identifies full-shade and full-sun series; Samsung’s guidance for The Terrace recommends partial shade. Weather protection and smart features add other buying dimensions, so these five groupings are not mutually exclusive.
1. Full-shade outdoor TVs
Choose this grouping for a covered patio, porch, or gazebo where direct sunlight does not reach the screen. Shade does not remove the need for a set designed to handle outdoor conditions. Furrion’s Aurora range identifies full-shade models for covered spaces.

These are intended for locations with a mix of sun and shade. Labels do not guarantee that every model permits the same exposure: Samsung says its Terrace guidance is for partial shade and advises keeping the TV out of direct sunlight. Check the exact model’s manual and placement limits.

3. Full-sun outdoor TVs
For a brighter, more exposed location, select a model expressly designed for full sun and follow its instructions on placement and heat. Both Furrion and SunBriteTV identify full-sun options. The label is not permission to disregard model-specific operating limits.
4. Weather-protection-first models
Compare the exact TV’s ingress-protection rating and installation rules. Samsung states that The Terrace is rated IP55, but also says it should not be submerged. An IP rating addresses protection against ingress; it does not tell you whether the screen will be readable in direct sun or whether the TV can tolerate a particular temperature. See Samsung’s water and placement guidance.
5. Feature-defined models: smart or standard
Some outdoor ranges offer both smart and standard sets. Furrion lists both options within its Aurora range. A smart TV may avoid the need for a separate streaming player, but check the specific model’s apps, network support, and inputs before choosing. Furrion’s product-family page describes these feature variants.

How do you choose the right outdoor TV?
Evaluate the screen’s actual exposure first, then verify brightness, weather protection, heat limits, and installation requirements for the model you are considering.
Observe sunlight where the screen will sit
Check the spot at the hours you expect to watch. Sun moves, so a location that is shaded at midday may receive direct light later. Furrion’s manual advises considering the sun’s movement before mounting; its Partial Sun 2 manual also says that product is designed for an area where direct sunlight does not hit the screen. Read the model manual rather than relying on a category label alone.
Match brightness and glare control to the light
Look at the model’s stated brightness and glare-handling features, and use independent testing if available. Samsung describes anti-glare and adaptive-brightness features for The Terrace. Furrion publishes brightness thresholds as its own buying guidance, not as a universal outdoor-TV standard. Samsung’s Terrace product page describes its features, while Furrion’s buying guide gives its recommendations.

Check ingress protection and water restrictions
Read the rating and the manual together. For example, Samsung identifies The Terrace as IP55 and explicitly warns against submersion. Do not treat a weather-resistance rating as proof of suitability for every installation or as a measure of sunlight performance. Samsung’s support page explains its model-specific guidance.
Verify operating temperature and sunlight warnings
Find the exact model’s allowed operating range and any warnings about direct sunlight or heat. Furrion’s Partial Sun 2 manual states an operating range of -24°F to 122°F for that product; those limits are not a general specification for outdoor TVs. Furrion’s manual also gives its placement instructions.
Plan smart features, connectivity, and sound
Confirm that the TV has the apps, network connection, and inputs you need. If it does not, an external streaming device is an option only if the TV has a compatible input. Samsung recommends pairing The Terrace with an outdoor-optimized soundbar, but that is a product-specific option rather than a requirement for every setup. Samsung’s product page discusses the pairing.

Account for mounting, power, and maintenance
Plan access to power and connections before mounting; Furrion warns that rear connections may be obstructed once its TV is mounted. Check that the mount matches the TV’s mounting pattern, size, and weight, and follow the installation instructions. Furrion recommends professional installation and two people for moving or installing the model covered by its manual. A compatible cover can offer supplementary protection, but check dimensions and instructions for the exact TV. Consult the manual before installation.

The best fit is the outdoor TV whose exposure category matches the actual light at the screen, with weather protection and operating limits that suit the location. For a covered space, start with full-shade models; where sunlight reaches the screen, compare partial-sun or full-sun options and verify each model’s manual. Then weigh brightness and glare control alongside ingress protection, heat limits, features, and installation needs. No single rating answers all of those questions.
