The right outdoor security camera depends on what needs light and how you want to see it at night. A spotlight suits a porch or side entrance; a floodlight is designed to illuminate a wider area such as a driveway or backyard. For color footage after dark, check whether the camera uses visible light, and weigh coverage, power, detection, and storage alongside resolution.
Match the light to the area
Spotlights and floodlights serve different jobs. Reolink describes a concentrated spotlight as suitable for a camera’s immediate area, such as a porch or side entrance, while a floodlight spreads illumination across larger spaces such as driveways, backyards, or parking areas. These are broad placement guidelines; the beam and the scene depend on mounting position and surroundings.
- Entryway or side path: Consider a spotlight and aim it to cover the approach without shining directly into the camera lens.
- Driveway or broad yard: Compare floodlight coverage and the exact model’s lumen specification. Reolink’s UK comparison lists up to 3,000 lumens for selected wired models and up to 1,000 lumens for its listed solar model; these are model-specific manufacturer figures for a UK listing, not values that apply to every floodlight camera. Brightness alone does not show how well a camera will identify a person or vehicle. Distance, glare, obstructions, ambient light, and mounting angle all affect what reaches the image.

Understand what “night vision” means
Color night vision may depend on visible light from a built-in spotlight or floodlight. Reolink’s Duo Floodlight WiFi, for example, is listed with color night vision and motion-activated built-in floodlights. Do not assume that a color-night-vision label guarantees color footage in complete darkness with all lights off. Traditional infrared night vision can work without visible illumination but generally produces monochrome footage; the cited product information does not establish a detailed cross-brand infrared comparison.

- Real-time alerts* — Get motion-activated notification when anyone steps in view of your camera.

- Light up large outdoor areas* — 2000 lumen motion-activated floodlights give unwanted visitors nowhere to hide.

If your priority is color detail, check whether the exact camera has a visible-light source and whether it can be set to turn on automatically. If you want to avoid visible light, verify the individual model’s infrared capabilities and review what its manufacturer says about operation in darkness.
Compare cameras by the job they can do
| Model | Manufacturer-stated features | Potential fit | What the specifications do not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reolink Duo Floodlight WiFi | Dual-lens 4K video, 180° view, built-in floodlights, motion-activated lighting, color night vision, and smart detection for people, vehicles, and animals. Official product page | A fixed location where broad coverage and integrated visible light are priorities. | The stated 180° view does not guarantee there will be no blind spots at your mounting location. The specifications do not prove superior real-world image quality or detection. |
| Ring Floodlight Cam Pro | 2K video, 3D Motion Detection, and LED floodlights described for larger outdoor spaces. Official product page | A fixed floodlight-camera installation where the listed detection feature is of interest. | The reviewed product information does not establish a lumen figure, storage price, or current subscription terms. |
| Arlo Wired Floodlight | Arlo’s catalog lists 2,000 lumens, 2K HDR recording, and a 160° field of view. Arlo floodlight camera catalog | A wired installation where a floodlight and the listed field of view suit the site. | Confirm the exact product and local availability. Arlo’s Pro 5S is a different product: its spotlight and color night vision should not be attributed to the Wired Floodlight. |
These are manufacturer claims, not results from controlled comparisons or hands-on night testing. Resolution, field of view, and light output are not directly interchangeable measures: they describe different aspects of a camera, and none alone establishes how useful its footage will be at your distance and angle.

Check power and installation before choosing a model
Fixed floodlight cameras are a natural fit where suitable wiring is available. Battery or solar models can offer more placement flexibility, but that flexibility brings charging and sunlight considerations. Reolink’s UK listing identifies its Solar Floodlight Cam as battery-plus-solar powered; check the exact model’s current regional listing and runtime conditions rather than assuming every solar camera performs the same way.
