A smart ring records signals; it does not directly measure one all-purpose health score. Oura uses overnight heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), skin-temperature changes, breathing patterns, sleep estimates and movement to build the metrics in its app. The five morning checks below help explain what those numbers represent—and what they cannot tell you.
What does Oura Ring track overnight?
Oura combines measurements and estimates collected mainly during sleep. Its app then turns some of those signals into scores and trend views. A score is therefore a summary based on several inputs, not a separate sensor reading. Oura describes that distinction with the phrase “Oura Ring measures. Membership explains.” (Oura’s product explainer.)
The five useful morning checks are Sleep, Readiness, resting heart rate and HRV, temperature deviation, and respiratory rate. Daily activity matters too, but it is best understood as a separate movement summary that can affect Readiness.
1. Sleep Score and sleep details
The Sleep Score summarizes the previous night. The app also estimates time asleep and awake and time in light, deep, and REM sleep. Oura says its sleep-stage estimates draw on movement, skin temperature, resting heart rate, HRV, and respiratory rate.

Oura Member Care reports 79% agreement between its sleep-staging algorithm and polysomnography (PSG), a sleep-lab method (Oura’s sleep-stage explanation). That is the company’s reported validation result, not a promise that a particular person’s stages—or any single night—will match a lab test exactly.
2. Readiness Score
Readiness is a daily 0–100 summary of how your recent sleep, activity, and body signals compare with your own patterns. Oura lists overnight contributors including the lowest resting heart rate and when it occurred, average body temperature, sleep quality, and movement from the previous day. Some contributors describe “balance”: weighted recent trends considered against longer-term patterns. (Oura’s Readiness Score guide.)

Readiness is a wellness guide, not a diagnosis or a direct measurement of how fit, healthy, or ready you are in every sense. Its value is most useful as a personal trend alongside how you feel, rather than as a universal pass-or-fail threshold. Oura explains its score scales and approach in its Readiness explainer.

3. Resting heart rate and HRV
Resting heart rate (RHR) is the heart-rate signal at rest; HRV describes variation in the time between successive heartbeats. Oura presents both as trends and uses them as Readiness inputs. A change from your own usual pattern is generally more informative than comparing one reading with a universal target.

The app includes sleep and daytime heart-rate views. Automatic daytime readings have movement and signal-quality constraints, so a missing or limited daytime value does not by itself indicate a health problem. Oura’s heart-rate guide describes the app’s heart-rate views. The company’s cardiovascular white paper says these features are not clinical diagnostic tools; they can help members notice changes from their normal patterns (Oura cardiovascular white paper).
4. Temperature deviation
Oura’s temperature metric is average nighttime skin temperature relative to your personal baseline—not core body temperature. The company says the ring establishes a baseline during the first couple of weeks and takes readings during sleep, when environmental and activity effects are reduced. A deviation can reflect a physiological change, but it does not identify the cause or diagnose a condition. See Oura’s temperature guide and its metric glossary.

5. Respiratory rate
The respiratory-rate value is the previous night’s average breaths per minute. Oura estimates it from nighttime heart-rate changes, using the relationship between breathing and heart rhythm. Treat it as a nighttime estimate and follow its trend over time, not as a direct breathing measurement or diagnosis. Oura explains the metric in its respiratory-rate guide.
Where daily activity fits
Oura also tracks movement and exercise. Previous-day activity can affect Readiness and activity-balance contributors, but it is distinct from the five overnight checks above. Oura’s product explainer describes automatic detection of more than 40 activities; the availability of activity and heart-rate features depends on ring generation and membership. In particular, Oura says Activity Heart Rate requires Gen3 or later and an active membership (Oura Activity Heart Rate support).

What else may appear in Oura’s data?
Oura’s API documentation lists sleep duration and staging, average and lowest heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, temperature deviation, and average SpO2 during the main sleep session. That is a list of available data fields, not a guarantee that every metric appears in every member’s morning screen. What the app shows can depend on the feature, device generation, membership, platform, and context. Oura API documentation describes the data fields.
Quick Recap
How to read the numbers without overreading them
- Separate signals from summaries. Heart rate, HRV, temperature deviation, and respiratory rate are signals or estimates; Sleep and Readiness Scores combine inputs.
- Look for personal patterns. These metrics are most useful for noticing how a reading differs from your own baseline over time.
- Keep context in view. Sleep estimates and daytime readings have measurement limits, and the app’s feature set varies by eligibility and context.
- Do not use the ring to diagnose symptoms. Persistent or concerning symptoms warrant discussion with a qualified clinician, regardless of a score or trend.
