Short answer: In 2026, an Oura Ring Gen3 is a used or refurbished purchase because Oura says the Gen3 ring and charger are no longer sold. Horizon and Heritage use the same documented Gen3 sensor platform, so neither has an established health-feature advantage. Choose Horizon for its smooth, uninterrupted round profile or Heritage for its flat-top plateau. Select a finish by appearance and coating type, then treat battery condition, a compatible charger, exact sizing and the ongoing membership as the real buying checks.
What you are actually buying in 2026
Oura Member Care’s Previous Oura Ring Generations page, updated October 1, 2026, states: “The Gen3 ring and charger are no longer available for purchase.” That changes the buying decision. You are no longer choosing between current retail configurations with predictable factory support; you are evaluating a second-hand or refurbished wearable whose battery, charger and sizing may vary from listing to listing.
A Gen3 can still make sense when the purchase price, condition and membership commitment fit your needs. The shell choice is mainly visual and ergonomic. The higher-risk variables are hidden ones: how much battery capacity remains, whether the charger is included and compatible, whether the seller has confirmed the size, and whether the recurring membership is acceptable in your region.
Do not treat an old launch price as a current deal. T3 listed Heritage at a historical $299 recommended retail price and Horizon at $349; those were launch-era reference prices, not today’s offers. A current used listing should be judged on its total ownership cost and condition rather than on how closely it resembles those old figures.

Horizon versus Heritage: the meaningful differences
Both versions are Gen3 shells built around the same documented Gen3 sensor platform. The available evidence does not establish a meaningful difference in sleep, heart-rate, temperature, blood-oxygen or other health capabilities between the two shapes. Your choice is therefore about the outside profile, visual style and the orientation cue you find easiest to use.
| Model | Exterior profile | Orientation cue | Historical launch reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horizon | Smooth, uninterrupted and round | Small dimple faces the palm | $349 RRP in T3’s historical review; not a current offer |
| Heritage | Classic plateau or flat-top profile | Flat side faces upward | $299 RRP in T3’s historical review; not a current offer |
Horizon
Horizon has a continuous circular exterior with no plateau. Its small dimple is the orientation reference: place that dimple toward the palm when wearing the ring. The uninterrupted profile is the better visual match if you want the ring to look as close as possible to a conventional smooth band.
Heritage
Heritage retains the original plateau design. The flat section should face upward. That geometric top makes the ring’s orientation obvious at a glance, which some buyers may prefer over locating Horizon’s small dimple.
What the shape does not prove
Neither profile has a documented health advantage in the available Gen3 evidence. There is also no controlled, same-user comparison establishing that one is more comfortable or lasts longer on a charge. Marketplace anecdotes can reflect different sizes, fingers, settings, battery ages and wear patterns, so they are not a standardized comparison.
How to choose the profile
Use a profile-first decision rather than assuming the more expensive historical model is technically superior.
- Pick Horizon when a smooth, ring-like exterior is your priority and you are comfortable using a small dimple as the orientation cue.
- Pick Heritage when you prefer a visible flat-top design or want the upper side to be immediately apparent from the plateau.
- Do not pay a premium for health features. The documented Gen3 platform is shared, and no evidence establishes a sensor or feature advantage for either shell.
- Let condition override shape. A well-documented, correctly sized ring with a healthy battery is generally a safer used purchase than a preferred profile with an uncertain battery or missing charger.
Gen3 finishes and their coatings
Oura listed six Gen3 finishes. The finish names describe the visible treatment; the coating information is the useful construction detail when comparing otherwise similar listings.
| Finish | Coating documented by Oura |
|---|---|
| Black | DLC |
| Brushed Titanium | PVD |
| Gold | PVD |
| Rose Gold | PVD |
| Silver | PVD |
| Stealth (matte black) | DLC |
Availability varied by model and inventory, so a finish listed in an old product page may not be available in the size or shell you find today. Confirm the exact finish in the seller’s photographs and description rather than assuming every Horizon or Heritage combination was stocked.

What PVD and DLC tell you
Oura documents PVD on Gold, Silver, Rose Gold and Brushed Titanium, and DLC on Black and Stealth. The documentation does not provide a standardized Gen3 test ranking these finishes by scratch resistance. It is therefore accurate to identify the coating, but not to promise that one color will resist scratches better than another.
Which finish is best for a used ring?
Start with the appearance you will be happy to wear every day, then use coating type as a tie-breaker. If you want a polished metallic look, compare the PVD options. If you prefer black, compare Black and Stealth, noting that Stealth is matte. Do not infer condition from the color name: inspect the actual ring for edge wear, chips, deep scratches and worn coating.
Ask for clear, well-lit photographs of the exterior and interior. A close-up can reveal wear that a distant lifestyle image hides. Because no controlled finish-durability ranking is established, the individual ring’s condition matters more than a generalized claim about a color.
Sizing and wearing the ring correctly
Oura recommends using a sizing kit. Oura sizes differ slightly from standard ring sizes, and half sizes are not available. For a used purchase, the kit should correspond to Gen3 rather than to another generation, because generation-specific sizing is part of the fit decision.
Before you buy
- Use or borrow a Gen3 sizing kit and identify the exact size that remains comfortable through your normal day.
- Confirm that the listing states that same size. Do not rely on a seller’s conversion from a conventional ring size.
- Request a clear photograph of the inside of the ring showing the size marking or other identifying detail. Treat a listing without a confirmed size or interior photographs as higher risk.
- Check that the shell is the model and finish advertised. A smooth exterior indicates Horizon; a plateau indicates Heritage.
During wear
Orient the ring using its model cue: Horizon’s dimple belongs toward the palm, while Heritage’s flat side belongs on top. Keep that orientation consistent so the ring sits as intended and the app’s readings are collected in the expected position.
Battery life and charging on a used Gen3
Oura Member Care gives Gen3 an “up to seven days” battery estimate for a new device. Oura qualifies that figure: actual runtime varies with ring size, settings, activity, battery age and use. It is not a guarantee for a second-hand ring.
Rechargeable batteries lose capacity over time. A used Gen3 may therefore deliver materially less than the headline estimate even when it appears cosmetically excellent. Ask the seller how long the ring currently lasts from a full charge and whether that observation was made with normal tracking enabled. A specific recent runtime is more useful than repeating the original seven-day estimate.

Gen3 originally shipped with a USB charging kit, but Oura now says Gen3 chargers are no longer sold by Oura. A compatible replacement charger is consequently a core part of the purchase, not an optional accessory. Confirm that a charger is included, identify it as Gen3-compatible, and ask for a photograph of the ring seated on it if the listing is unclear. If you must buy a replacement, include its cost and delivery time in your total before deciding.

- Seat the ring on the charger and verify that it begins charging rather than merely resting on the cradle.
- Check that the connection remains stable when the ring is moved slightly.
- Record the battery level after a full charge and monitor the first normal use cycle.
- Compare the observed runtime with the seller’s description. A large difference is a condition issue, not a Horizon-versus-Heritage difference.
Membership: the recurring cost that changes the value calculation
Gen3 is a membership product. Oura says an active membership unlocks detailed sleep analysis, 24/7 heart rate, temperature monitoring, SpO2, stress, activity goals, reports and other advanced features. Without membership, the app is limited to Readiness, Activity and Sleep scores, battery information, basic profile and settings, and Explore content.
| Access state | Capabilities documented by Oura |
|---|---|
| Active membership | Detailed sleep analysis; 24/7 heart rate; temperature monitoring; SpO2; stress; activity goals; reports; other advanced features |
| Without membership | Readiness, Activity and Sleep scores; battery; basic profile and settings; Explore content |
The membership rate is recurring and can depend on the offer and region at activation. Add the current rate shown for your account to the used-ring price, replacement-charger cost and expected battery replacement or replacement-ring risk. If you only want the three headline scores and basic information, the limited no-membership mode may be sufficient; buyers seeking the detailed analyses should treat membership as part of the device’s effective price.
Calculate the total ownership cost
Use a simple four-part calculation before accepting a listing:
- Ring price: the amount charged for the used or refurbished Horizon or Heritage.
- Charging: the cost of a compatible Gen3 charger if one is not included or if the supplied unit is unverified.
- Battery risk: allow for shorter runtime because capacity declines with age. A low price is less attractive if the ring needs frequent charging or early replacement.
- Membership: include the recurring plan rate you will actually pay in your region.
This total produces a fairer comparison than an old $299 or $349 launch reference. Two listings with the same shell and finish can have very different values when one includes a working charger and a documented battery while the other does not.
Used and refurbished buying checklist
Information to obtain before payment
- Exact model: Horizon or Heritage.
- Gen3 confirmation rather than another Oura generation.
- Exact size, confirmed against a Gen3 sizing kit.
- Finish name and clear exterior photographs.
- Interior photographs that show the ring’s condition and size information.
- Current battery behavior, preferably a recent full-charge runtime.
- Whether the USB charging kit is included and whether it is identified as Gen3-compatible.
- Any visible coating wear, deep scratches, chips or damage around the sensor area.
Questions that expose a weak listing
Ask the seller to state the model, size, finish, charger status and observed battery runtime in writing. If the seller cannot distinguish Horizon’s smooth profile from Heritage’s plateau, cannot confirm the size, or uses only stock photographs, the listing leaves too many of the important variables unresolved. A low price does not compensate for uncertainty about fit or charging.
When to walk away
Pass on a listing with no confirmed size, no useful interior photograph, no charger plan and no credible battery information. Also pass when the finish shown in the photographs does not match the description. Those are condition and compatibility risks that the model name cannot solve.

A practical decision framework
| Decision axis | Choose this direction | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Profile | Horizon for smooth and uninterrupted; Heritage for plateau and flat top | Defines the visible shape; no documented health-feature difference |
| Orientation cue | Horizon if a palm-facing dimple is intuitive; Heritage if a top-facing flat side is clearer | Helps you position the ring consistently |
| Finish | Select the appearance you prefer, then compare PVD or DLC construction | No standardized Gen3 test ranks scratch resistance by finish |
| Condition | Favor verified size, clear photos, working charger and credible battery runtime | Used-device variables can outweigh cosmetic preference |
| Ownership cost | Include charger, battery risk and recurring membership | Launch-era RRP does not represent a current used-market value |
Step-by-step purchase process
- Decide whether Gen3’s feature access justifies membership. Review the active-membership and no-membership capabilities before looking at colors.
- Determine your Gen3 size. Use the correct sizing kit; do not substitute a standard ring-size chart or assume a half size exists.
- Choose the shell profile. Select Horizon for the smooth exterior or Heritage for the plateau, without expecting a sensor advantage.
- Shortlist finishes. Match the visual finish to the photographs and note whether Oura documents it as PVD or DLC.
- Evaluate condition. Compare battery evidence, interior and exterior photographs, coating wear and sensor-area condition.
- Verify charging. Confirm that the included charger is compatible or price a replacement Gen3 charger because Oura no longer sells one.
- Compute total cost. Add the ring, charger, expected battery risk and recurring membership rate for your region.
- Confirm return protection. Before paying, understand the seller’s return terms so you can reject a ring that does not match its stated size, finish, charging behavior or battery condition.
- Test immediately. Confirm fit, orientation, charging and first-cycle runtime while any return window remains open.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using launch prices as a bargain benchmark
The historical $299 Heritage and $349 Horizon figures are reference points from T3’s launch-era review. They are not current offers and do not account for battery age, a missing charger or membership. Compare present total ownership cost instead.
Assuming the finish determines durability
PVD and DLC identify the documented coating families, but no standardized Gen3 test establishes a finish-by-finish scratch ranking. Inspect the individual used ring and avoid promises that a particular color cannot wear.

Buying by standard ring size
Oura sizes differ slightly from standard ring sizes and half sizes are unavailable. A familiar size from another ring is not enough; use a Gen3 sizing kit and require confirmation from the seller.
Ignoring the charger because the ring is the main purchase
Gen3 chargers are no longer sold by Oura. A missing or incompatible charger can turn an apparently inexpensive listing into a delayed or more expensive purchase. Resolve the charger question before payment.
Expecting a new-device battery figure from an old ring
“Up to seven days” is a qualified new-device estimate. Battery age, settings, activity and size affect runtime, and a used battery may perform materially below it. Ask for current evidence and test promptly.
Paying more for a shape that does not add features
Horizon and Heritage share the documented Gen3 sensor platform, and the available evidence does not show a meaningful health-feature advantage. Spend extra only when the profile, finish or condition is worth it to you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFinal buying recommendation
Buy a Gen3 only after treating it as a used wearable with a recurring service cost. Choose Horizon or Heritage by profile and orientation cue, not by assumed health performance. Choose among Black, Brushed Titanium, Gold, Rose Gold, Silver and Stealth by the look you prefer and the actual condition of the coating; use PVD versus DLC as descriptive information, not as an unsupported durability ranking. The safest listing is the one with a Gen3-confirmed size, clear interior and exterior photographs, a compatible charger, credible current battery behavior and a total cost that still makes sense after membership.
