Before buying a replacement SSD, check whether the problem is firmware, configuration, compatibility, or maintenance. The manufacturer’s management utility can show the exact model, firmware version, health data and diagnostic results, and may offer an update. That software-first check can solve some reliability or compatibility problems, but it cannot add storage capacity, restore worn NAND, or repair failing hardware.
When a firmware update is a sensible first upgrade
SSD firmware is embedded operating software that controls how the drive’s controller, NAND flash and host system work together. Manufacturers issue updates to address model-specific performance, compatibility, quality, reliability, diagnostics or security issues. Samsung explains that it may provide new firmware “to improve its SSD performance, compatibility, or user environment,” while its FAQ says software updates let manufacturers improve hardware performance and quality.
That makes an update worth checking when the drive is otherwise healthy but you are seeing unexplained compatibility errors, intermittent behavior, outdated firmware warnings or performance that changed after an operating-system or hardware change. The outcome depends on the exact SSD model, firmware revision and workload. No general speed percentage applies to every drive, and a firmware update is not guaranteed to increase benchmark results.
When software cannot replace the SSD
Firmware cannot create additional NAND capacity. If the drive is full, the durable solution is a larger physical SSD. Likewise, persistent SMART warnings, rising error counts, repeated disconnects, severe wear indicators, controller faults or data corruption call for recovery planning and replacement rather than repeated updates.

- INDUSTRY DEFINING RELIABILITY: Meet the demands of every task from everyday computing to 8K video processing, with up to 2,400 TBW
- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
Workload matters. A short benchmark may look better while long, sustained transfers, virtual machines or scratch-disk use remain slow because of thermal limits, exhausted cache, low free space or the drive’s physical design. Evaluate the actual workload after maintenance, not just a peak score.
Check the drive before deciding
- Identify the exact drive. Use your operating system’s storage information or the manufacturer’s utility to record the brand, model, interface and capacity. Do not apply firmware intended for a different model.
- Install the matching official utility. Samsung SSDs use Magician; Western Digital and SanDisk SSD products use Dashboard; Crucial provides Storage Executive. Confirm that your model and operating system are supported.
- Record the baseline. Save the current firmware revision, health status, total usage, SMART results and any diagnostic messages. Note the workload or symptom you want to fix.
- Read the release notes. Install an update when its listed fixes match your model or symptom. Treat general wording such as “performance improvement” as a potential benefit, not a promise of a faster drive.
What the major utilities can do
| Vendor | Utility and functions | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | Magician offers firmware updates, health status, secure erase, performance benchmarks, optimization, over-provisioning and security features. | Several functions are limited to Samsung SSDs and supported models. |
| Western Digital/SanDisk | Dashboard provides firmware-version and update notices, health and SMART tests, and performance monitoring. | Western Digital says its legacy Dashboard has ended support; SanDisk Dashboard is the current SSD product path. |
| Crucial | Storage Executive supports firmware updates and SSD management. | Confirm the exact model and supported operating system before updating. |
Back up and prepare before updating
A firmware update can fail or interrupt access to the drive. Samsung highly recommends copying all data on the SSD to another storage device before running its Firmware Utility. Western Digital warns of a risk of complete data loss and likewise strongly recommends a backup.

- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
- Copy important files to separate storage. An external SSD is a practical backup destination because it keeps the copy independent of the internal drive.
- Verify that the backup opens and contains the files you need; a copy that has never been checked is not a dependable recovery plan.
- Connect a laptop to stable wall power. On a desktop, avoid starting the update during an unstable power condition.
- Close applications that are using the SSD and follow the utility’s exact reboot or shutdown instructions.
- Do not interrupt the process, disconnect the drive or force a restart while firmware is being written.
Run the update safely
- Launch the vendor utility with the correct SSD selected.
- Confirm the displayed model and current firmware against your notes.
- Start the firmware update only after the backup and power checks are complete.
- Allow every requested reboot. For SATA updates, Western Digital documents a full shutdown and restart procedure; follow the instructions shown for your drive.
- After the system returns, reopen the utility and verify the new firmware revision, health status and SMART data.
Measure the result without overstating it
Repeat the same diagnostic or benchmark conditions you used before the update, then test the task that originally caused concern. Compare sustained behavior, temperatures, error messages and stability as well as headline throughput. If the symptom disappears and health indicators remain normal, the software route may have been enough. If nothing changes, that is useful evidence that the limitation is not the firmware issue addressed by the update.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose replacement when the evidence points to hardware
- Health: failing SMART indicators, data errors or repeated disconnects favor recovery and replacement.
- Capacity: inadequate free space requires a larger physical drive; firmware cannot increase it.
- Sustained performance: if the real workload remains inadequate after maintenance, select a drive designed for that workload and interface.
- Compatibility: an update is most relevant when the vendor specifically lists a controller, operating-system or firmware-bug fix for your model.
- Support status: check whether the manufacturer still publishes firmware and security updates. Western Digital’s 2021 policy describes standard software support for up to eight years after product release.
- Risk tolerance: backup and stable power are mandatory because an interrupted update can cause data loss or leave the drive unusable.
A practical decision rule
Choose the software-first path when the SSD is recognized normally, health data is good, capacity is sufficient and the vendor offers a relevant update. Choose hardware replacement when capacity is the constraint, health warnings persist, the drive is failing, or the workload remains too demanding after the update. In either case, preserve a verified backup before changing firmware or moving data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can updating SSD firmware make it faster?
It can improve performance in some model-specific cases, but vendors do not establish a universal speed gain. Judge the result with your sustained workload and the update’s release notes.
How do I check SSD health?
Open the SSD maker’s supported utility and review health status, SMART tests, total usage and diagnostic messages. Record the results before making changes.

Is SSD firmware worth updating if the drive works?
Check the release notes and support status first. An update can address compatibility, quality, reliability or security issues, but it also carries interruption and data-loss risk, so back up before proceeding.
What should I do if the update fails?
Keep the backup, follow the utility’s recovery or support instructions, avoid repeated power cycling, and treat the drive as at risk until its firmware and health status are verified.
