Ouisync syncs files between devices through shared repositories rather than requiring a central cloud drive. It offers write, read-only, and blind access: blind peers can store and synchronize encrypted repository data without reading its contents. The project says it encrypts file contents and repository structure, but its technical paper also describes network activity that may reveal Ouisync use or other metadata. Encryption is not anonymity.
What is Ouisync?
Ouisync is free, open-source software for peer-to-peer file synchronization and sharing. You put files in a repository managed by the app, then share that repository with other devices using an access token. Ouisync describes sharing as possible “with or without the internet”; that means peers may synchronize over an available local connection without internet access, not that devices can exchange data when they have no connection to one another. How do Ouisync repositories and access tokens work?
A repository is the unit you create or import files into and share. The token you give a peer determines what that peer can do. Ouisync’s technical paper describes three token types, while cautioning that the paper is not a formal specification and the source code is the authoritative implementation.

Blind access is useful when you want another peer to help hold and synchronize repository data without granting access to the files themselves. It is not the same as read-only access: a read-only peer can read the contents, while a blind peer cannot. For the project’s architecture and token descriptions, consult the Ouisync technical paper.

Is Ouisync secure?
The project says repository contents and filesystem structure—including filenames—are encrypted at rest and while being transferred. Its design also allows synchronization without a peer decrypting the data, which is what makes blind access possible. These are statements about the project’s design, not evidence of an independent security audit or guarantee that every threat is prevented. Ouisync describes its approach on its security page.
What encryption does not hide
Encryption protects file contents and repository structure; it does not make network activity invisible. Ouisync’s technical paper discusses observable signals such as distributed-hash-table messages, local multicast, peer exchange, NAT detection, and connections to caching servers. Depending on circumstances, such activity may reveal use of the app or other metadata. The paper also considers threat scenarios and says it is not a formal specification.

So, Ouisync should not be described as anonymous, unhackable, or as preventing all metadata leakage. Its stated protections concern encrypted repository data; the paper’s network-level caveats matter if your concern is whether someone can infer that devices are communicating.

Can Ouisync sync without internet access?
Ouisync says repositories can synchronize with or without internet connectivity. For offline use, participating devices still need a way to communicate over a local connection; “without internet” does not mean synchronization works when peers are disconnected from each other. Which devices support Ouisync?
The Ouisync GUI repository lists Android, Windows, and Linux as supported. The homepage labels iOS as in progress, so do not assume an iOS release is generally available. Platform status and compatibility can change; check the app repository and official homepage for current downloads and release information. Android distribution is also listed on Google Play.
