Yes. Ohio State residence halls have Wi-Fi through ResNet. Use eduroam for your computer, phone, or tablet; register streaming players, game consoles, and other compatible smart devices for Registered4OSU. A wired ResNet connection is also available.

Which OSU network should you use?

Ohio State lists five networks for specific purposes. The right choice depends on your device and whether you are a student or visitor.

Network Best for What to know
eduroam Students’ computers, smartphones, and tablets Ohio State’s primary secure wireless network. Set it up with your Ohio State username and password. Ohio State network guide
Registered4OSU Streaming players, game consoles, and other smart devices that cannot sign in with a username and password Register the device first; check Ohio State’s compatibility guidance for your model.
ResNet Wired Devices connected to a residence-hall Ethernet jack Device registration is required. Ohio State describes wired service as its highest-speed, most stable option for demanding uses such as gaming and streaming; this is not a guaranteed speed measurement. Network details
WiFi@OSU Guests and visitors; an onboarding entry point for students, faculty, and staff It is open and unencrypted, and its captive portal and restrictions make it a poor fit for many smart devices and campus resources. Students should use eduroam instead. Guest network details
osuwireless None Ohio State says this network is no longer available; use eduroam. Current network list

How to connect a student phone, tablet, or computer

  1. Open wireless.osu.edu and choose Connect to eduroam.
  2. Sign in with your Ohio State username (name.#) and password, then follow the prompts for your device.
  3. When setup is complete, select eduroam from the device’s Wi-Fi settings.

Ohio State’s setup guide says the configuration uses a digital certificate and describes it as valid for five years. See the student device setup guide for the current instructions.

Fall 2026 re-onboarding notice

An Ohio State OTDI notice dated September 28, 2026, says users of personal phones, tablets, and computers must re-onboard before October 13, 2026, to keep connecting to eduroam. The notice says managed university devices may have different requirements. Because the deadline is time-sensitive, check the current notice for updated instructions and contact the IT Service Desk if you need help.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What to bring for a reliable connection

Even if you expect to use Wi-Fi, Ohio State recommends bringing a Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cable as a wired backup or for eligible wired devices. An unmanaged network switch is permitted if you need more than one wired port. See Ohio State’s before-you-arrive guidance.

Do not bring a personal router, wireless access point, extender, repeater, or signal booster for your room. Ohio State prohibits these devices in residence halls because they can interfere with the existing network.

Device compatibility and common connection problems

  • A phone, tablet, or computer will not connect: Confirm you selected eduroam and completed its onboarding steps with your Ohio State credentials.
  • A console or smart device cannot sign in: Check whether it needs registration for Registered4OSU, then consult Ohio State’s device compatibility guidance.
  • You are a visitor: WiFi@OSU provides 12 hours of uninterrupted access after you accept its terms; after that, you must authenticate again. Visitor access details
  • A device still will not connect: ResNet supports residence-hall wired and wireless connectivity, including network jack installation and maintenance. Call 614-292-5700 for 24/7 phone support, or submit an online service request during regular business hours. ResNet support information

Streaming-device caveat

Compatibility depends on the device and network setup. Ohio State’s FAQ says Chromecast cannot stream from a phone, tablet, or computer on the network architecture described there, and suggests Roku or Apple TV instead. Check the ResNet FAQ and device guide before relying on a particular streaming setup.

What to expect from dorm Wi-Fi performance

Ohio State publishes no named, dated study or measured figure for residence-hall Wi-Fi speed, uptime, or room-by-room signal coverage in the cited network information. That means there is no supported Mbps rate or universal signal guarantee to rely on. For a demanding wired connection, the university describes ResNet Wired as its highest-speed and most stable option, but does not publish a speed guarantee.
