Facebook is the only practical choice between Orkut and Facebook for a private community operating today. Orkut was officially shut down on September 30, 2014. Its remaining Community Archive is a read-only record of public discussions, not a live service for private membership, posting, moderation, or messaging.
Facebook Groups do provide a private visibility setting: members can see the other members and the posts shared in the group, while people outside it cannot see that group content through the normal group view. That is an audience control, not a guarantee of confidentiality, permanence, exportability, or immunity from administrator decisions and future product changes.

Can you still use Orkut?
No. Google’s Orkut Help states that Orkut was officially shut down on September 30, 2014. Google also says that public community discussions can be viewed in the Community Archive, while items associated with an Orkut profile can no longer be saved.
The archive distinction matters. A preserved page is not the same as an account, a moderated community, or a place where members can create new posts. It does not provide a current private-membership system, live notifications, administrator controls, or an active private chat. If your group needs to function now, Orkut cannot meet that requirement.

What the Community Archive can and cannot do
- It can: let visitors view public community discussions that Google retained.
- It cannot: host new discussions, accept new members, provide live moderation, or operate as a private network.
- It does not establish: that private Orkut communities remain available or that profile-linked material can still be recovered.
Any comparison that treats Orkut as a live alternative is therefore comparing an operating service with an archive. The useful present-day question is how Facebook’s current group controls fit your community, not which Orkut feature once looked better.
How Facebook’s private and public group settings differ
Meta’s explanation of Facebook group privacy, published in 2019, draws a clear audience boundary. In a public group, anyone can see the members and everything shared in the group. In a private group, only members can see the other members and the posts shared there. Jordan Davis, a Facebook Groups product manager, described the private setting this way: “With private groups, only members can see who else is in the group and what they’ve posted.”
That distinction answers the basic visibility question, but it should not be read as a promise of secrecy. A private group controls who can view the group through Facebook’s group interface. It does not prevent a member from copying, photographing, forwarding, or otherwise redistributing something they can see. Administrators and moderators can also access the group under their management roles, and Facebook’s product rules and controls can change.
What “private” means for an organizer
- Audience: people outside the group do not receive the same member-and-post visibility that they receive for a public group.
- Membership visibility: members can see who else belongs to the private group under the stated private-group model.
- Content visibility: posts are intended for the member audience, but the setting cannot control what an authorized member does with a post after seeing it.
- Operational responsibility: the people administering the group still control day-to-day membership and moderation decisions within the options Facebook currently exposes.
Before inviting anyone, read the privacy description shown in the group’s current settings. Facebook can rename, move, or retire controls, so an old screenshot or an explanation written for an earlier version should not be treated as the final authority.
What happens if a Facebook Group becomes public?
Meta announced in November 2025 that administrators can convert a private group to public. The announcement describes a protective transition for material posted before the change: previous posts, comments, and interactions remain visible only to administrators, moderators, and people who were already members. The member list remains visible only to administrators and moderators.

This is different from assuming that every historical post instantly becomes visible to the entire internet. It is also different from assuming that the group’s future behavior will match an older privacy explanation. The conversion is a consequential governance decision, so organizers should read the confirmation screen and the controls Facebook presents at the moment of conversion.
A change-control checklist
- Record the current state. Note whether the group is private, who administers it, and what member notice or policy describes the group’s audience.
- Explain the proposed change. Tell members why a public setting is being considered and what the platform says will happen to earlier posts, comments, interactions, and the member list.
- Review the live confirmation text. Do not rely only on a 2019 explanation or a third-party guide; the options and wording shown to administrators are the relevant ones.
- Check for objections and sensitive material. Identify posts or discussions that members reasonably expected to remain within the private community.
- Document the decision. Keep the date, administrators involved, member communication, and the setting that was selected.
If your community’s purpose depends on a continuing private audience, do not treat conversion as a routine administrative toggle. Establish an approval rule for privacy changes before the group grows, so one rushed decision does not redefine the audience for everyone.

Facebook Help says Community Chats are going away and provides a way to download messages before permanent deletion. It also suggests using a separate Messenger Community for a main chat, announcements, and events. Facebook’s in-product notice is the source to consult for the timing and availability that apply to your account.
This retirement affects continuity rather than the basic private-group label. A group can still be private while a particular chat feature is removed. If your community relies on chat history, announcements, or event coordination, treat those as separate assets and plan for each one.
Before a Community Chat disappears
- Look for the retirement notice in the relevant chat or group interface and confirm the stated deletion date for your account.
- Use Facebook’s message-download option before the stated deadline if the history has legal, operational, or sentimental value.
- Decide what must continue live: a main conversation, announcements, events, or all three.
- Evaluate the suggested Messenger Community against your moderation, membership, and record-keeping requirements rather than assuming it is identical to the retiring feature.
- Tell members where each function moved and which history, if any, was preserved.
Do not promise permanent access to group conversations merely because a download option exists today. Facebook controls the feature lifecycle, and the retirement itself demonstrates why a private community needs a continuity plan.

Does Facebook’s moderation record prove that a private group is safe?
No. Meta reported that in 2020 it removed about 12 million pieces of content in groups for violating its hate-speech policies and found 87% of those items proactively. Those figures are Meta’s own report of its enforcement activity for that year. They are not an independent audit, a measurement of every group’s safety, or evidence that a particular private group will be free of abuse.
For an organizer, the useful lesson is narrower: platform-level detection and enforcement exist, but they do not replace community rules, reporting routes, or human moderation. A private audience can still contain harassment, scams, conflict, or accidental disclosure. Set expectations for conduct and escalation, and make sure more than one trusted person understands the moderation process.
How to assess Facebook for your own community
Facebook is the practical answer in this two-way comparison, but “better” depends on what your community must protect and how much platform dependence it can accept. Use the following decision axes before creating or moving a group.
1. Audience visibility
Ask whether outsiders should be able to discover the group, see its members, or read its posts. Facebook’s private setting addresses the member-and-post audience described by Meta. If your policy requires anonymity even among members, that setting is not enough: members can see the other members under the private-group model.
2. Membership control
Decide who may join, who reviews requests, what information is required, and how inactive or harmful accounts are handled. The available approval and membership controls can change, and the evidence here does not establish a particular current approval workflow. Open the group’s live settings and document the controls you actually see rather than copying instructions from an older interface.

3. Change management
Assign responsibility for privacy changes. Record which administrators can make them, require a second-person review for a conversion, and notify members before changing the audience. The November 2025 conversion behavior makes this especially important for communities with sensitive archives.
4. Discussion continuity
Separate ordinary group posts from chat history and event coordination. If your community used Community Chats, download messages before Facebook’s stated deletion deadline and decide whether the suggested Messenger Community covers the functions you need.
5. Platform dependence
A Facebook group is hosted by Facebook. Its labels, tools, retention behavior, and available export paths can change. Keep essential policies, contact information, and irreplaceable records in a location your organization controls, subject to your privacy and legal requirements. The existence of a download option for a retiring chat should not be generalized into a promise that every group asset is exportable.
A practical setup plan for a new private Facebook community
- Write the purpose and audience first. State who the group serves, what belongs there, and what should never be posted.
- Choose the private setting shown in Facebook’s current group-creation flow. Read the accompanying visibility explanation before confirming it.
- Review every membership option available at creation. Record whether requests require approval, what administrators can ask applicants, and how those options are described in the current interface.
- Appoint at least two responsible administrators. Use a written handover plan so the community is not dependent on one person’s account.
- Publish rules and an escalation path. Explain prohibited conduct, how members report a problem, and who can remove content or members under the group’s rules.
- Set a privacy-change policy. Require documented review before anyone changes the group from private to public or makes another audience-affecting change.
- Plan chat and records separately. Decide where announcements, events, and long-lived reference material belong, and explain what happens if Facebook retires a feature.
- Recheck the settings periodically. Product changes can alter labels or available options; compare the live controls with your written policy and notify members when the practical audience changes.
Common scenarios and the right answer
You are starting a private club, class, or volunteer group today
Use a private Facebook Group if Facebook is acceptable to your members. Tell applicants what members can see, publish the rules, and assign administrators who can maintain the group when the original organizer leaves. Orkut is not an alternative because it no longer operates.

You can consult the Community Archive for public historical discussions, but you cannot revive the Orkut service itself. Preserve any material you are entitled to retain, then create a new community on a currently operating platform and explain that it is a successor rather than a continuation of live Orkut membership.

Your private Facebook group contains sensitive historical discussions
Do not convert it casually. Explain the proposed audience change, review Facebook’s current conversion notice, and consider whether members’ expectations require a new public group instead of changing the existing private one.
Your group depends on a Community Chat archive
Use Facebook’s message-download facility before the deletion deadline shown in your notice. Then decide whether a Messenger Community or another arrangement meets your needs; do not assume the replacement preserves every permission, history, or moderation behavior.
You need confidentiality rather than ordinary audience restriction
Facebook’s private-group setting is not a confidentiality guarantee. It limits the normal audience to members, but members can redistribute what they see and administrators or moderators can access group material. Define the threat you are trying to manage before treating “private” as sufficient.

Verdict
For an active private community, Facebook wins this specific comparison because it is the only operating service of the two. Its private-group setting gives members-only visibility for the member list and posts under Meta’s stated model, while its current product changes require deliberate governance. Orkut’s shutdown and archive mean it cannot host a new or continuing private community.
Choose Facebook with clear limits in mind: private is an audience setting, not an absolute secrecy promise; administrators can change the group’s status; chat features can be retired; and platform controls can evolve. If those conditions do not fit your risk, retention, or governance requirements, the answer is not Orkut—it is to evaluate a different currently operating community host against those requirements.
