The original arcade Donkey Kong has four stages, while the original NES release has three: Nintendo left out the cement-factory, conveyor-belt stage. That omission means the cartridge is a remarkably close adaptation of the arcade game, but not a complete reproduction of its stage sequence.

Both versions retain Mario’s rescue mission, construction-site hazards, ladders, platforms, Pauline’s dropped bonus items, the temporary hammer, and the score-attack structure. The important differences are completeness, screen presentation, palette, object placement, and what each version represents as a collectible. Choose the arcade when historical and stage completeness matter most; choose an original NES cartridge and manual when you want an accessible physical Nintendo artifact.

At a glance: what changes between the arcade and NES versions?

Aspect Original arcade Original NES release
Purpose Rescue Pauline through the complete original stage sequence Rescue Pauline through a faithful home-console adaptation
Stage content Includes the cement-factory/conveyor-belt stage Omits that stage
Screen presentation Wider, cabinet-oriented framing Narrower home-console framing with small layout changes
Color treatment Arcade palette and cabinet display Famicom/NES color treatment; Nintendo staff noted a substantial color-count difference
Scoring loop Items, timed rescue, hammer attacks, and obstacle jumps The same recognizable scoring actions, documented in the NES manual
Documented dropped items Umbrellas, hats, purses, and other objects Parasol and purse/bag are named in the manual, plus the temporary hammer as an action item
Best collector fit Arcade-authentic cabinet or restored arcade presentation Original cartridge, ideally with its manual and packaging

Nintendo UK describes the NES edition as a launch title and “one of the most faithful adaptations of the original.” “Faithful” is the right description when it refers to the game’s objective and core systems; it should not be read as “identical” in stage count, framing, colors, or every object location.

What is missing from the NES version?

The cement-factory stage

The defining omission is the cement-factory or conveyor-belt stage. In the arcade, it is one of the four environments in the original progression. In the original NES cartridge, that environment is absent, so the home version moves through a shorter sequence before repeating its available stages at higher difficulty.

This is more than a cosmetic cut. A stage contributes its own platforms, hazards, routes, timing problems, and opportunities for score building. A player who completes the original NES release has mastered the cartridge’s version of the rescue loop, but has not played every environment designed for the 1981 arcade game.

Small route and object changes

Even on stages that appear in both versions, comparisons are not pixel-for-pixel. The arcade review notes changes in Pauline’s placement and in other layout details. Platform and object positions can alter the safest route, the timing of a ladder climb, and the value of a particular jump. Those differences matter to high-score players, arcade historians, and anyone trying to reproduce a cabinet strategy on a home console.

The practical result is that an arcade route guide cannot always be followed exactly on the NES. Treat the cartridge as its own ruleset: learn the position of barrels, fireballs, ladders, and dropped items on the version you are actually playing.

How the gameplay compares

The shared rescue-and-climb objective

In both releases, Mario climbs construction-site layouts to reach Pauline while Donkey Kong sends hazards down the structure. The player uses ladders and platforms, avoids or jumps over obstacles, and takes advantage of openings created by enemy movement. Reaching Pauline is the immediate objective, but the design is built around repeating attempts, improving timing, and raising the score.

The NES manual preserves the same operational logic. It explains that points come from collecting Pauline’s dropped belongings, finishing the rescue before the bonus timer expires, striking barrels or fireballs with the temporary hammer, and jumping over obstacles. Those instructions show why the NES feels like an adaptation rather than a separate platform game: the actions that define an arcade attempt remain intact.

Barrels, fireballs, ladders, and the hammer

Barrels and fireballs remain the hazards that force constant movement. A jump can avoid an obstacle and award points, while a ladder can provide a route around danger or expose Mario to a less favorable timing window. The hammer changes the risk calculation for a short period: Mario becomes able to destroy barrels and enemies, but the effect is temporary, so using it is a timing decision rather than a permanent power-up.

The hammer is useful for survival and scoring, yet it does not erase the arcade game’s central discipline. A player must still read the layout, decide whether to climb or wait, and reach Pauline before the bonus timer runs out. The NES keeps that pressure, which is why experienced arcade players generally recognize the conversion immediately despite its cuts.

Scoring and the bonus timer

The score system rewards several behaviors instead of only reaching the next screen. Picking up an item dropped by Pauline, jumping over an obstacle, destroying a barrel or fireball with the hammer, and completing a rescue within the remaining bonus time all contribute to the score. The exact value of a move matters to score attackers, but the strategic pattern is broader: safe progress keeps the run alive, while optional jumps and pickups increase its value.

Because the NES retains these scoring categories, it supports the same arcade-style question: do you take the faster, riskier route for points, or choose the safer climb and preserve the life? The missing stage shortens the complete journey, but it does not remove the score-attack character of the stages that remain.

What the missing stage changes for play

Removing one environment changes the rhythm of a full session. Arcade players encounter a larger set of layouts before the game loops; NES players learn a smaller set and can concentrate their practice on those screens. That can make the cartridge easier to approach, but it also means fewer distinct timing puzzles and no home-console substitute for the omitted factory section.

For a casual player, the difference is visible when comparing stage lists. For a competitive or preservation-minded player, it affects route planning, completion claims, and the meaning of a high score. State clearly which release produced a score or playthrough; “finishing Donkey Kong” is not an equivalent accomplishment across the two stage sets.

Graphics, screen layout, and presentation

Arcade cabinet framing versus the NES screen

The arcade game was designed for a cabinet display and is shown in a wider frame. The NES version uses the narrower home-console presentation, a change that is noticeable even when the characters, hazards, and basic stage logic look familiar. The narrower view affects how much of the playfield is visible at once and contributes to the different visual feel of a climb.

That framing difference is important when watching footage or comparing screenshots. A cabinet-oriented image may show more horizontal context, while the NES view can make the same route feel more compressed. It is a presentation difference, not evidence that the two games use wholly different mechanics.

Color and palette differences

Nintendo’s 2016 Classic Mini interview provides an official observation about the conversion: “I also noticed a big difference in the number of colours in Donkey Kong.” The comment refers to the arcade game and its Famicom conversion, and it explains why side-by-side images can look different even when the sprites and stage concepts are recognizable.

Color count is not simply a matter of one release being “better.” Arcade hardware and a home console have different display and memory constraints, and the NES version’s palette is part of its identity as a Famicom/NES game. For a collector choosing a display piece, the cabinet’s wider image and arcade palette communicate the original coin-operated experience; the cartridge’s color treatment communicates Nintendo’s early home-console engineering.

Why faithful does not mean identical

The NES preserves the characters, rescue premise, hazards, ladders, platforms, hammer, item pickups, and scoring loop. It also introduces the narrower frame, the omitted cement-factory stage, color changes, and small layout adjustments. Considering all of those together gives a more accurate description than either extreme: it is neither a completely different game nor a perfect arcade dump.

What items can you collect in Donkey Kong?

Parasol and purse or bag

The NES manual’s item table names a parasol and a bag, and its scoring explanation says: “You can gain points by picking up things dropped by Pauline (parasol and purse).” The wording varies between “bag” in the item table and “purse” in the scoring text, but both refer to Pauline’s score-bearing dropped belongings.

These pickups are optional opportunities during a climb. Collecting them raises the score; it does not replace the need to reach Pauline or manage the bonus timer. Their placement is therefore part of the route decision: a player can divert for points when the hazard pattern allows it, or skip the item to preserve momentum.

The temporary hammer

The hammer is listed in the NES manual as an invincible hammer. It gives Mario a short period in which he can destroy barrels and enemies, including fireballs, rather than merely avoiding them. Because its duration is limited, picking it up creates a brief scoring and safety window. It is an action-changing item, unlike the parasol and purse, which are primarily score pickups.

Hats in the arcade documentation

Arcade references, including the International Arcade Museum’s description, list umbrellas, hats, purses, and other objects dropped by Pauline on the way to the top of the building. The hat is therefore part of the broader documented arcade item set, while the NES manual’s named pickup list centers on the parasol and purse or bag.

When cataloging a version, do not assume that every item named in an arcade reference appears identically on the original cartridge. Item terminology and the documented set differ by release, which is one reason collectors should identify the exact edition rather than labeling every home version “complete.”

Which version is better?

“Better” depends on what you want to preserve. The arcade release is the stronger choice for completeness and original presentation. The NES release is the stronger choice for an affordable-to-handle physical Nintendo artifact, straightforward home play, and the historical significance of a launch title.

Your priority More suitable choice Why
Play every original environment Arcade-authentic release The original arcade stage sequence includes the cement-factory stage omitted from the original cartridge.
Experience cabinet framing and arcade color presentation Original or faithfully restored arcade setup The cabinet-oriented display and arcade palette are part of the historical experience.
Own a compact physical Nintendo artifact Original NES cartridge A cartridge is easier to store, display, and use at home than a full cabinet.
Collect documentation NES cartridge with manual and original packaging The manual records the objective, scoring actions, and named items, adding context to the hardware.
Compare historical conversions Both, identified by exact edition The differences in stage content, screen framing, colors, and object placement are the subject of the comparison.

For pure gameplay variety and historical completeness, the arcade wins. For accessibility and the appeal of an original Nintendo home release, the NES cartridge is the more practical collectible. Neither choice makes the other obsolete because they document different parts of the game’s history.

Collector’s guide: cartridge, manual, cabinet, or restoration?

If you want the original NES artifact

Look for a genuine Donkey Kong NES game cartridge and, when possible, its original manual. The manual is not merely packaging: it documents the rescue objective, the score sources, the hammer, and the parasol and purse or bag pickups. A cartridge with its manual offers a more complete record of how Nintendo presented the game to home players.

Inspect the cartridge label, shell, connector condition, and provenance, but do not treat cosmetic wear as proof of authenticity by itself. A clean shell can be replaced, and a worn label can still belong to a legitimate original. Ask for clear photographs of the front, back, label, and connector area when buying remotely, and keep the seller’s edition description with your records.

If you want the arcade experience

An original cabinet is a different collecting category from a cartridge. It preserves the control panel, cabinet proportions, display framing, and coin-operated context, but it also introduces practical concerns: size, transport, electrical safety, monitor condition, replacement parts, and the distinction between an original board and a later reproduction or multi-game conversion.

For a display or preservation project, document what is original and what has been restored. A cabinet with repaired controls can still be a valuable historical object, but its restoration history should be part of the catalog entry. An arcade-authentic reproduction may provide the complete stage sequence without claiming to be an untouched 1981 machine.

If you are considering a “complete NES” release

Use the exact edition name. The original NES conversion omits the cement-factory stage; later restoration releases can change that comparison by adding or rebuilding content. Do not describe a restored or modern release as the original cartridge, and do not assume that a re-release has the same code, packaging, color behavior, or stage set as Nintendo’s launch-era NES edition.

Record the publisher, platform, release format, and whether the product is an original cartridge, a licensed re-release, a fan restoration, or an emulation-based compilation. That information prevents a common collecting error: buying a later “complete” version and then using it as evidence for what the original NES release contained.

How to compare two copies accurately

  1. Identify the edition. Write down the platform, region, release name, and whether the copy is original, restored, or a later re-release.
  2. Check the stage list. Confirm whether the cement-factory/conveyor-belt stage is present before calling the version complete.
  3. Compare the display. Note the cabinet-oriented width or home-console framing, and record whether the image comes from original hardware or an emulator.
  4. Use the same scoring goal. Compare item pickups, obstacle jumps, hammer use, and rescue timing only after accounting for layout changes.
  5. Catalog the physical package. Record the cartridge, label, manual, box, inserts, cabinet parts, board, monitor, and restoration work separately.
  6. Label footage and scores. State the exact version so viewers do not mistake an NES run for an arcade run or vice versa.

This method keeps gameplay comparison and collecting comparison aligned. A copy can be historically important without being stage-complete, and a restored release can be useful for play without being the same artifact as the 1981 arcade game or the original NES launch cartridge.

Common misconceptions

“The NES version is just the arcade game at home.”

It is a close adaptation, not an identical transfer. The rescue objective and scoring actions survive, but the omitted stage, narrower framing, color treatment, and layout adjustments are material differences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The NES has every arcade bonus item.”

The manual names the parasol and purse or bag, while arcade documentation also lists hats and other objects. Item lists should be tied to the release being cataloged.

“A complete NES release must be the original Nintendo cartridge.”

Completeness and originality are separate claims. A later restoration may supply content absent from the original cartridge, but that does not make it the same historical release.

“The wider arcade image proves the gameplay is different.”

The frame changes how the playfield is presented, but both versions retain the recognizable climb, hazards, ladders, hammer, Pauline pickups, and timed rescue structure. Screen composition and game rules should be evaluated separately.

Bottom line for players and collectors

Buy or play the arcade version when you want the complete original stage sequence, cabinet-oriented presentation, and the broadest documented bonus-item context. Choose an original NES cartridge with its manual when you want a tangible launch-era Nintendo release and a faithful home version that is easier to own and revisit. If a modern or restored edition claims to be complete, identify that edition explicitly: the claim may be true for the restoration while remaining false for the original NES release.
