The ORICO X50 is a compact, fanless Thunderbolt 5 enclosure for a bare M.2 2280 NVMe SSD. It can deliver very high transfer speeds when paired with a compatible drive and Thunderbolt 5 host, but its headline performance is not guaranteed on slower computers or with slower SSDs. The practical fit check comes first: it does not support M.2 SATA or 2230 drives, and the cited It’s FOSS review says an SSD with an attached heatsink will not fit.

What the ORICO X50 is—and who it suits

The X50 is an external enclosure, not necessarily a complete SSD: ORICO lists both a diskless option and configurations with built-in storage. The diskless model lets you install a compatible M.2 NVMe drive and use it as portable storage. It is most compelling if you already own a bare M.2 2280 NVMe SSD and a Thunderbolt 5 computer, or if a small, silent enclosure matters more to you than active cooling.

ORICO lists theoretical maximums of 6000 MB/s read and 5800 MB/s write. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every drive, computer, file transfer or workload will reach those rates. Your host connection and SSD both affect the result.

Check drive compatibility before buying

The enclosure is intended for M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs. According to Abhishek Prakash’s It’s FOSS review, M.2 SATA and 2230 drives are unsupported, and a drive with its own attached heatsink will not fit. The review’s specification table lists M Key and B+M Key compatibility.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Form factor: M.2 2280.
  • Drive interface: NVMe, not M.2 SATA.
  • Heatsink: Use a bare drive; the cited review says an SSD with an attached heatsink will not fit.
  • Capacity: ORICO’s catalog lists a diskless option and versions with 512GB, 1TB, 2TB or 4TB built-in storage.

If you are reusing a drive, check its label or manufacturer specifications for both its length and interface. M.2 describes the form factor; it does not by itself confirm that a drive is NVMe rather than SATA.

What the published speed tests show

Two reviews report very different results because they used different SSDs and host connections. They are examples of performance in particular test setups, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee for your system.

Review and setup Sequential read Sequential write What the result means
Abhishek Prakash, It’s FOSS (2026): Crucial P3 Plus 500GB; Ubuntu 26.04, Linux kernel 7.0; Thunderbolt 4 laptop negotiating a 40Gbps link 3878 MB/s 2810 MB/s The host link was Thunderbolt 4, so this test does not demonstrate the enclosure’s full Thunderbolt 5 performance.
Cale Hunt, Windows Central (review dated 2026-01-31): SK hynix Platinum P41 M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD; Thunderbolt 5 port 6191.67 MB/s 5546.99 MB/s Results from that reviewer’s Thunderbolt 5 setup; they should not be treated as a universal result.

The Windows Central figures are close to ORICO’s advertised rates, while the It’s FOSS results show how a Thunderbolt 4 host can constrain throughput. The differing SSDs, computers and review methods mean the numbers cannot isolate the enclosure as the sole cause of the gap. Both reviewers disclosed that ORICO supplied the review sample; Windows Central also said ORICO had no input into its review before publication.

Other results from the It’s FOSS test

On the same Crucial P3 Plus 500GB and Thunderbolt 4 setup, Prakash reported random read at QD32 of 1512 MB/s (369K IOPS), random write at QD32 of 1175 MB/s (287K IOPS), random read at QD1 of 59 MB/s (14.4K IOPS, 34 μs latency), and a 70% read/30% write mixed result of 1483 MB/s. The review also recorded 11.8 seconds for a 10GB single-file copy and 17.5 seconds for copying 5000 small 4KB files. These are results from that specific test system and workload.

Cooling, noise and sustained workloads

The X50 is fanless, so it avoids fan noise. ORICO’s sales page describes micro-fins, hydrogel thermal film and additional cooling layers, and claims a 200% greater heat-dissipation area and near-0 dB operation. Those comparative cooling figures are manufacturer claims, not independently verified measurements in the cited reviews.

In the It’s FOSS test, the enclosure stayed in the 60s °C during a 13-minute sustained write. Windows Central advises considering active cooling for demanding storage use. These reports do not establish a universal temperature or show how the X50 performs across longer sessions, different drives or ambient conditions. For frequent, sustained heavy transfers, weigh fanless silence against the potential benefit of an enclosure with active cooling.

Linux support and everyday handling

Prakash reported that the X50 worked out of the box on his Ubuntu 26.04 system with Linux kernel 7.0, appeared as a native NVMe device and exposed SMART data. He summarized his experience as: “Works out of the box on Linux, with full NVMe SMART data.” That is a report from one named test setup, not a guarantee for every Linux distribution, kernel or computer.

Windows Central reported a stable connection during its testing, but noted that the bottom panel was difficult to remove after installation. If you expect to swap drives often, that is worth considering alongside the enclosure’s compact design.

Size, materials and included items

ORICO lists the X50 at 110 × 60 × 18.7 mm, with an aluminum-alloy body, and states support for Windows, Mac and Linux. Its catalog lists a 0.5 m USB-C-to-USB-C 80G cable, manual, two thermal conductive silicone pieces and a screwdriver in the package. These are manufacturer-listed contents; confirm the contents of the specific version you buy.

How to judge whether it is the right enclosure

Compare the X50 with another enclosure or a prebuilt portable SSD on the factors that affect your actual use, rather than headline speed alone.

  • Computer connection: A Thunderbolt 5 enclosure cannot overcome a Thunderbolt 4 or slower host connection. Check the port and its supported standard on the computer you plan to use.
  • Your SSD: Confirm that the drive is M.2 2280 NVMe and does not have an attached heatsink. If buying diskless, include the cost and performance of the SSD you intend to install.
  • Workload: Large sequential transfers and small-file or mixed workloads produce different results. Compare benchmark figures only when the host, SSD and test method are meaningfully similar.
  • Thermals and noise: The fanless design is suited to people who value silence; sustained heavy work may favor considering active cooling.
  • Storage configuration and price: The catalog lists diskless and built-in-storage options. Prices and stock can change, so check the live listing for the configuration you want.
