Organic Maps is a credible Google Maps alternative if you want offline maps and navigation without relying on a Google account. It offers offline search and walking, cycling, and driving directions, and the project describes it as free, open-source, and privacy-focused. Whether it can replace Google Maps for you depends on how well its OpenStreetMap-based coverage serves your area and which features you rely on.
What Organic Maps is—and what “de-Googled” means here
Organic Maps is a mobile maps and GPS app, not a modified edition of Google Maps. It uses OpenStreetMap data and is available for Android and iOS. The project describes it as a privacy-focused offline maps app for hiking, cycling, and driving. Organic Maps’ official site lists its features and download options.
Calling it de-Googled describes the choice to use a different mapping app and data source; it does not mean that every phone or service involved is free of Google. The app’s availability includes Apple’s App Store and Google Play, as well as Huawei AppGallery, Obtainium, Accrescent, and F-Droid, according to the project site.
What it can do without a connection
Organic Maps lists downloadable offline maps and offline search, so you can look up places and navigate in a downloaded area without depending on an active data connection for those functions. You need to download the relevant map region in advance. The project also lists turn-by-turn directions with voice guidance for walking, cycling, and driving, plus hiking trails, cycling routes, and metro maps.

For trips where connectivity may be weak, offline search and downloaded maps are the app’s clearest practical advantage. Plan ahead: the offline map only covers the area you have downloaded, and map data does not guarantee that every address, business, trail, or transit detail is present.
Where it may fall short as a Google Maps replacement
OpenStreetMap is maintained by a community, so completeness and freshness can differ by location. Organic Maps’ feature list establishes the kinds of navigation it offers, but it does not establish that its search results or routes match Google Maps in a particular town. Check the places and journeys you actually need rather than assuming coverage is uniform.

The available product information also does not establish head-to-head route accuracy, live-traffic parity, business-review coverage, or complete transit support. The project lists metro maps, but that alone is not evidence of comprehensive public-transit routing. If you depend on traffic conditions, transit directions, or detailed business listings, verify those requirements with your usual routes and destinations before switching.
Privacy, open source, and availability
The project says Organic Maps is free and open source, with no ads, tracking, data collection, or required registration. Those are the project’s stated privacy claims, not the result of an independent audit of app traffic or behavior. The source code and project information are available in the Organic Maps repository.

Organic Maps’ official site reported 6 million installs in December 2025. That is a project-published install count, not a count of active users or a measure of market share. Release details can change: when the F-Droid listing was accessed, it displayed version 2026.09.29-32-FDroid, with OpenStreetMap data dated September 28, 2026 and Wikipedia data dated September 21, 2026.

- Download your usual area: Install Organic Maps from a distribution channel listed by the project, then save the map regions you need for offline use.
- Try real destinations: Search for your home, work, frequent stops, and less familiar places. Check whether the results include the addresses and businesses you expect.
- Compare familiar routes: Test representative walking, cycling, and driving trips. Check route suitability and voice guidance, rather than judging only from the displayed map.
- Check transit and traffic needs separately: If you rely on live traffic, public-transit routing, or business reviews, confirm that your local needs are met; the listed features alone do not demonstrate parity.
- Keep it alongside your current map app if needed: Use Organic Maps for downloaded offline maps or routes where it works well, without treating a trial as proof that it covers every feature you depend on.
For cyclists using voice navigation, a bicycle phone mount can make directions easier to follow; no specific model or compatibility has been established here. The project also accepts donations to support the app, as described on its official site.
