Modified organic crystals have been shown in a 2024 materials study to capture moisture from air, collect condensed water, and optically track water movement. The reported collection efficiency was 15.96 ± 0.63 g cm−2 h−1. This is an experimental result—not evidence of a household water maker. The study abstract does not establish consumer-scale output, drinking-water safety, field durability, or product availability.
How do organic crystals collect water from air?
The approach uses slender organic crystals that are partially silanized through layer-by-layer hybridization. This modification creates Janus-type crystals: different regions of the same crystal have distinct surface properties. The reported design combines aerial moisture harvesting with collection of water that condenses on the crystal.
The crystals also undergo reversible, periodic elastic deformation, which the authors describe as helping deliver water. At the interface between a crystal and a droplet, an optical refractive-index mismatch makes it possible to monitor water movement. In other words, the material is described not only as a collector, but also as a system with built-in optical sensing.
What does the reported efficiency mean?
The study authors reported a water-collection efficiency of 15.96 ± 0.63 g cm−2 h−1 in their 2024 study, Efficient Aerial Water Harvesting with Self-Sensing Dynamic Janus Crystals. Keep that figure tied to its stated units and experimental context: it is not a household daily yield, and it cannot be translated directly into liters per day without comparable device area, environmental conditions, test duration, and collection setup.

Can you compare the crystals with MOF water harvesters?
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a separate class of porous crystalline materials. Their reported results provide context for atmospheric water-harvesting research, but they are not performance figures for the organic Janus crystals. The studies also report different measurement bases and conditions, so the numbers below should not be treated as a direct ranking.
| Research approach | Reported result | Conditions and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Organic Janus-type crystals | 15.96 ± 0.63 g cm−2 h−1 | Study authors, 2024; reported collection efficiency. The accessible abstract does not establish common test details for comparison with the MOF results. Source |
| MOF-303 passive harvester | 210 g H2O per kg MOF-303 per day in Death Valley National Park; 285 g H2O per kg MOF-303 per day in Berkeley | Study authors, 2023; tested at the two named California locations. The authors describe ambient sunlight as the only energy input beyond the environment. Source |
| Adaptive MOF-801 device | 3.5 L H2O kgMOF−1 day−1 | Study authors, 2022; tested under arid-climate conditions. The study also reported a 169% production increase against its comparator active device; this is specific to that experimental comparison. Source |
| Hydrolytically stable MOF | 4.38 kg water per kg MOF per day | Study authors, 2026; projected material-level performance under simulated temperature-swing conditions, not a field result for organic crystals. Source |
These figures use different materials, units, device configurations, environmental conditions, and measurement bases. The accessible abstract for the organic-crystal paper does not provide enough common test detail to rank it against the MOF devices.

- ✅ [Revolution] - Game-changing revolution in drinking water industry! Brings you the purest water by extracting moisture from the air and purifying the water with built-in air and water filtration system. No plumbing or piped water is needed. Just plug into a power outlet! No installation is needed.
- ✅ [Purifying] - With built-in air and water filtration system such as PAC treatment, Ultrafiltration, carbon block filter system, and UVC-LED sterilization system, etc., it produces drinking water that tastes fresh, pure, and soft.
- ✅ [Production Volume] - The produced water volume depends on the level of humidity in the air and the ambient temperature. Work best in areas with relative humidity levels ABOVE 40% and environmental temperature ABOVE 59°F (15°C). The maximum production volume is 2.64 Gallon (10L) each day (with the temperature of 86°F and humidity of 80%).
- ✅ [Healthy] - Free from contaminants like heavy metal, pesticides, and other impurities found in ground or surface water. Say goodbye to chlorine and chemicals from urban water supply system. The water tank is made of Food-grade PP (Polypropylene). Say goodbye to plastic bottles and reduce your carbon footprint. Help reduce the humidity level in the room.
- ✅ [Easy and Convenient] - Can also be connected to solar pannels (paired with a power station or battery bank), makes it a perfect water source for homes, RVs, trailers, boats, off-grid or emergencies during natural disasters.
Can crystals pull water from the air in a dry climate?
The organic-crystal abstract establishes an experimental moisture-harvesting result, but it does not specify enough environmental test detail to determine how the material performs across dry climates or at particular humidity and temperature levels. The separate MOF-801 study reports testing under arid-climate conditions, but that result belongs to MOF-801, not to the organic crystals.

The cited organic-crystal study describes research materials and functions, not a retail appliance. It does not establish a commercially available household harvester, consumer-scale production, drinking-water safety, field durability, or product cost. A collection result alone cannot show that captured water is potable; water quality and safe handling would need to be established separately.
