To connect an Orbi WiFi system, link the Orbi router’s yellow Internet port to your modem or ISP gateway with the supplied Ethernet cable, power up the modem and router, then finish setup in the Orbi app or a web browser. Keep satellites unplugged until the setup flow prompts you to add them. Exact login addresses and some steps vary by Orbi model, so use the model-specific instructions if your device differs from the general procedure.
What to have ready
- Your Orbi router and power adapter, modem or ISP gateway, and supplied Ethernet cable.
- A phone with the Orbi app, or a computer with WiFi or an Ethernet connection.
- The router’s default WiFi name and password, printed on its label.
If your ISP supplied a gateway that combines modem and router functions, connect it to Orbi’s yellow Internet port as described below. Whether the gateway needs bridge mode or another network setting depends on the ISP and Orbi model; check their instructions rather than assuming one setting applies to every gateway.
Choose an app or browser setup

NETGEAR documents both methods; choosing one is a setup preference, not a claim that it will produce better WiFi performance. The app flow requires MyNETGEAR sign-in.
Connect the router to the modem
- Unplug the modem and any existing router. Leave Orbi satellites unplugged.
- Use the supplied Ethernet cable to connect the modem or gateway to the Orbi router’s yellow Internet port.
- Power on the modem and wait for its status lights to stabilize.
- Plug in and power on the Orbi router. Wait for its LED to turn solid white; NETGEAR says startup can take up to five minutes.
Set up Orbi in the app
- Open the Orbi app, sign in to your MyNETGEAR account, and choose Set up an Orbi.
- Scan the QR code on the router sleeve or base when prompted.
- Follow the app’s instructions to confirm the modem connection and join the default Orbi WiFi using the credentials on the router label.
- Set a new WiFi network name and password, then create an administrator password. These are separate credentials: the WiFi password connects devices to your network; the administrator password controls router settings.
- Complete the security questions if prompted, and continue through the remaining setup screens.
- When the app reaches satellite setup, plug in each satellite and let the app discover it. NETGEAR recommends placing a satellite three to four rooms from the router or another satellite.
Set up Orbi in a browser
- With the modem and existing router unplugged, connect the Orbi router’s yellow Internet port to the modem or gateway. Power on the modem first, wait for its lights to stabilize, then power on Orbi and leave satellites unplugged.
- Connect a computer to Orbi’s default WiFi with the name and password printed on the router label, or connect the computer to an Orbi LAN port.
- Open a browser and enter the login address for your model generation. NETGEAR’s general Orbi guide lists
orbilogin.localfor newer routers andorbilogin.comfor older routers. If the host name does not work, the guide lists10.168.168.1and192.168.1.1, respectively, as alternatives. - Follow the on-screen setup: accept the terms if shown, configure administrator and WiFi credentials, and complete satellite detection when prompted.
- Allow the router to check for firmware updates and follow any instructions it displays.
NETGEAR’s documentation distinguishes router generations, and login details can vary. If none of these addresses opens the setup page, check the instructions for your exact Orbi model rather than guessing another address.

Add satellites during setup or later
During initial installation, wait until the app or browser flow asks you to connect satellites. For a later add-on, NETGEAR’s app procedure is to connect your phone to Orbi WiFi, sign in with the account used for initial setup, open Menu, tap ADD SATELLITE, and follow the prompts. Verify compatibility with your specific router before adding a satellite; Orbi models are not established here as universally interchangeable.
Troubleshoot setup problems
The Orbi app cannot finish installation
- Disconnect the Orbi router from the modem.
- Reboot the modem and wait for it to finish restarting.
- Reconnect the modem to Orbi’s yellow Internet port and retry setup in the app.
- If the app still fails, use the browser setup route above.
The browser login page will not load
- Check that your computer is connected to Orbi WiFi or an Orbi LAN port.
- Confirm that the router is powered on and has finished starting.
- Reopen the browser or clear its cache, then retry the model-appropriate login address.
- Consult your model’s setup instructions if the documented addresses do not work.
Setup finishes but there is no internet access
Recheck the connection from the modem or gateway to the yellow Internet port and review the settings entered during setup. If service still does not come through, ask your ISP to confirm the configuration it requires for your connection. Required settings depend on the service and equipment; there is no single ISP configuration established for every Orbi installation.

Keep your credentials somewhere secure
Record the personalized WiFi name and password and the administrator password in a secure place. They serve different purposes, and the default WiFi credentials printed on the router label are not a substitute for the administrator login you create during setup.
