Choose OrangePi O1 for an appliance-style edge-AI system that needs onboard NVMe and SATA interfaces, dual Gigabit Ethernet, camera connectivity, and substantial video I/O. Choose NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano Super when CUDA, TensorRT, robotics tools, and a mature developer ecosystem matter more. The O1 is advertised at 16 INT8 TOPS, while the Jetson Orin Nano Super is specified at up to 67 INT8 TOPS, but those figures are not an apples-to-apples speed test.

For any competing board advertised near 16 TOPS, make the decision from measured performance on your exact model, supported formats, memory, storage, cameras, networking, power, cooling, and availability—not from the TOPS label alone.

What the OrangePi O1 is

Orange Pi published the OrangePi O1 on 23 September 2026, according to LinuxGizmos. It is a 90 × 70 mm single-board computer built around Sophgo’s BM1688 system-on-chip. The reported board weight is 76 g. Its design is aimed at edge appliances rather than a bare compute module: storage, networking, display, camera, and expansion interfaces are all part of the board-level specification.

Compute is more than the TOPS number

The BM1688 figures use different numerical precisions. INT8 is commonly used for quantized neural-network inference, INT4 can reduce memory and arithmetic requirements further, and FP16 or BF16 can preserve more numerical range at a different performance level. A workload that runs at 16 INT8 TOPS will not necessarily run at 16 TOPS when it uses FP16, unsupported operators, custom layers, or CPU fallbacks.

The eight Cortex-A53 cores are important because an edge application is not only an inference kernel. Camera capture, image resizing, decoding, database writes, network services, device management, and watchdog logic all consume CPU time. The RISC-V C906 helper core may be useful for supported auxiliary work, but its presence does not automatically accelerate a model.

How to interpret 16 TOPS

TOPS means tera operations per second under a stated arithmetic format and operating condition. It is a theoretical or vendor-reported ceiling, not a universal frame-rate measurement. Two boards can publish the same INT8 TOPS and deliver very different results because of memory bandwidth, compiler quality, operator coverage, tensor layout, batching, thermals, and data-transfer overhead.

Question to ask Why the answer changes the buying decision
Which precision is measured? INT8, INT4, FP16, and BF16 have different arithmetic costs and accuracy implications.
Is sparsity counted? Sparse-operation figures can exceed dense-operation results for the same silicon and model.
Does the compiler support every operator? Unsupported layers may run on the CPU or require graph changes, reducing real throughput.
What model and batch size are used? A small detector, transformer, segmentation network, and video-enhancement model stress different parts of the system.
What thermal and power mode is active? A board may sustain a burst but throttle during a continuous camera workload.
How much preprocessing and copying is required? Moving frames between camera, CPU, memory, and accelerator can dominate end-to-end latency.

NVIDIA’s published Jetson figures also need this context. NVIDIA lists up to 67 INT8 TOPS for the Jetson Orin Nano Super class and 34 TOPS for the Orin Nano 4GB class, with a configurable 7–25 W power range for the Super developer kit. The higher published ceiling does not prove that every model will be faster than the O1, but it does establish a larger vendor-stated AI ceiling under NVIDIA’s measurement conditions.

OrangePi O1 versus Jetson Orin Nano Super

Buying factor OrangePi O1 Jetson Orin Nano Super
Published AI figure 16 INT8 TOPS; BM1688-related figures include 32 INT4 and 4 FP16/BF16 TOPS Up to 67 INT8 TOPS for the Super class; NVIDIA lists 34 TOPS for Orin Nano 4GB
Software direction Confirm BM1688 model-format support, compiler requirements, and operator coverage for your application JetPack SDK, with CUDA and TensorRT compatibility and a broad robotics and developer ecosystem
Storage topology M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 plus SATA III interfaces on the board Evaluate the exact kit and carrier-board storage arrangement for your deployment
Networking Dual Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 are reported Check the exact developer-kit or carrier-board configuration required for your ports and wireless needs
Video and cameras HDMI 2.0, MIPI DSI, camera interfaces, and BM1688 video capability reported by CNX Software Evaluate the camera and display interfaces on the specific Jetson carrier board you will deploy
Power and cooling Exact board power figures are not stated here; sustained TPU/VPU work requires active cooling, with a dedicated 12 V four-pin fan header Configurable 7–25 W power range is specified for the Super developer kit; cooling still depends on enclosure and workload
Best reason to choose it Appliance-style integration, storage flexibility, and network/video I/O CUDA/TensorRT compatibility, robotics tooling, and established software support

Do not divide 67 by 16 and call the result a real-world speed ratio. NVIDIA and Sophgo may count operations differently, and the figures can differ in sparsity assumptions, precision handling, compiler behavior, and thermal settings. A valid comparison requires the same model, input resolution, precision, batch size, preprocessing path, power mode, and sustained test duration.

Where the OrangePi O1 makes the most sense

Multi-camera gateways and NVR appliances

CNX Software reports that BM1688 can decode up to sixteen 1080p30 streams or encode ten. Those are codec capability figures, not a promise that sixteen cameras can simultaneously perform complex AI inference at full frame rate. They make the O1 interesting for video gateways, network video recorders, industrial vision hubs, and camera aggregators where storage and Ethernet ports are as important as inference.

Before buying, check the exact camera codec, stream count, frame rate, resolution, decode and encode direction, and number of inference pipelines. A system that decodes sixteen streams but runs detection on only a subset may be perfectly suitable; a system requiring inference on every frame may need a different performance target.

Industrial or remote edge appliances

Dual Gigabit Ethernet can simplify separate device and uplink networks. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 can help with commissioning and local peripherals, while cellular expansion can support sites without reliable wired service. Confirm the physical expansion connector, modem support, antenna arrangement, carrier approval, and regional bands before designing an enclosure.

Systems that need local data storage

The combination of M.2 NVMe and SATA III is a practical distinction from boards that depend on USB storage. You can place the operating system and models on NVMe while assigning a SATA SSD or hard drive to recordings, logs, or a local data cache. The board provides interfaces; it does not mean an NVMe module or SATA drive is included. Validate the M.2 keying, module length, mounting hardware, power draw, and boot support for the exact board revision.

When another board is the better choice

CUDA-dependent or robotics software

If your application already depends on CUDA, TensorRT, NVIDIA-specific libraries, or established robotics packages, the Jetson Orin Nano Super can reduce porting work. Its JetPack SDK and larger developer ecosystem are often more valuable than a board-level storage advantage. The relevant question is not whether the O1 can theoretically execute the neural network; it is whether your entire application, including camera drivers, plugins, custom operators, and deployment scripts, can run without rewriting critical components.

Models with uncertain BM1688 support

Do not assume that a popular model automatically converts to the O1’s accelerator. Ask for a supported framework and export path, accepted quantization formats, unsupported operators, maximum tensor sizes, and examples for your model family. If the conversion process inserts CPU fallbacks, the advertised accelerator throughput may not describe your application at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Projects with no thermal or hardware-integration budget

The O1’s sustained TPU/VPU workloads require active cooling. If your enclosure cannot provide airflow, a heatsink, and a controlled fan connection, choose a platform whose thermal design is already validated for your duty cycle. A short demonstration is not evidence of continuous reliability.

Can OrangePi O1 run local AI or an LLM?

It is intended for local AI inference, but the available specifications do not establish support for a particular large language model, context length, quantization format, or memory capacity. Whether an LLM is practical depends on model size, quantization, RAM capacity and bandwidth, accelerator compiler support, tokenizer and runtime support, and the response latency you require.

For a vision model, begin with the vendor-supported export path and measure end-to-end latency. For an LLM, verify the runtime and operator coverage first; then test prompt processing, token generation, memory use, and sustained temperature. A model that technically loads may still be too slow or may spill work onto the CPU. Do not infer LLM capability from 16 TOPS alone.

  1. Define the workload. Write down the model name and version, input dimensions, camera count, target frame rate, latency limit, batch size, precision, and whether the workload is detection, classification, segmentation, generation, or another task.
  2. Map the data path. Identify where frames enter, where decode occurs, how preprocessing is performed, where inference runs, and where results are stored or transmitted. Count every memory copy and conversion.
  3. Verify software support. Obtain the supported framework versions, model conversion tools, quantization rules, compiler limitations, camera drivers, and sample applications for the exact model. Treat an unverified operator as a project risk.
  4. Check memory and storage. Confirm RAM capacity and bandwidth for the model and buffers. Decide whether models, operating-system files, recordings, and logs need separate devices. For the O1, validate both M.2 NVMe and SATA compatibility rather than assuming every module works.
  5. Check physical I/O. Match camera connectors, display output, Ethernet count, wireless requirements, cellular expansion, USB needs, and enclosure dimensions. A theoretical TOPS advantage is irrelevant if the board needs a hub or capture device that adds latency and failure points.
  6. Design for sustained thermals. Estimate continuous—not peak—power. For the O1, plan an active cooler connected to the dedicated 12 V four-pin fan header and provide a way to move heat out of the enclosure. For any board, define the allowed temperature and the behavior you expect when throttling begins.
  7. Benchmark the complete pipeline. Use the same input data and measure startup time, preprocessing, inference, post-processing, storage writes, network transfer, frames per second, latency percentiles, dropped frames, power mode, and temperature over a sustained run. Record whether any layer executes on the CPU.
  8. Validate deployment logistics. Confirm price, stock, board revision, software maintenance, replacement availability, and regulatory or carrier requirements. No current official O1 price and stock listing was published in the available 2026 reports, so obtain a current seller quotation before committing to production quantities.

Cooling, power, and enclosure planning for the O1

Active cooling is a requirement for sustained loads

EmbedSBC’s 25 September 2026 hardware analysis says sustained TPU/VPU workloads require active cooling. Use a heatsink and fan sized for continuous operation, not a temporary desktop test. Connect the fan to the dedicated 12 V four-pin header and make sure the enclosure has an inlet and exhaust path. Monitor temperature and clock behavior during the longest expected camera or inference session.

Do not confuse the fan voltage with board input power

The reported 12 V fan header describes the fan connection. It does not, by itself, establish the O1’s required board input voltage or total system consumption. Obtain the board’s power specification and add the draw of NVMe, SATA storage, cameras, radios, Ethernet devices, and the fan before selecting a supply.

Allow for storage heat and vibration

NVMe devices can add heat inside a compact enclosure, while a spinning SATA hard drive adds vibration and startup current. An SSD is generally easier to cool and deploy remotely, but capacity and write endurance still need to match recording requirements. Keep sustained writes away from the hottest area of the board and test the complete storage configuration.

Accessories and integration checklist

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying from the TOPS label

A 16-TOPS label does not tell you latency, supported operators, memory behavior, or sustained throughput. Require a benchmark on your model or run one yourself.

Assuming video decode equals AI capacity

Sixteen 1080p30 decode streams and ten encode streams describe BM1688 video capability reported by CNX Software. They do not guarantee sixteen simultaneous inference pipelines, especially when streams require resizing, tracking, recording, and network output.

Leaving cooling until the enclosure is finished

Without active cooling, a board can pass a short demo and then throttle during continuous operation. Reserve fan space, airflow openings, and a temperature-monitoring method in the first mechanical design.

Assuming interfaces include the devices

An M.2 socket and SATA interface are connection options, not an included SSD or hard drive. Budget for the storage device, mounting hardware, cables, and power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Porting software after choosing hardware

Model conversion, camera drivers, and custom operators can take longer than the physical integration. Test the software path before ordering a production batch.

Decision guide

Your priority Preferred direction Reason
Integrated NVMe and SATA with dual Ethernet and camera/video I/O OrangePi O1 Those interfaces are part of the reported board specification and can reduce adapters in an appliance.
CUDA, TensorRT, robotics packages, and a large developer ecosystem Jetson Orin Nano Super NVIDIA’s JetPack-based software path is the stronger fit.
Multi-camera video gateway Start with OrangePi O1, then benchmark BM1688 video figures are attractive, but codec, inference, and storage combinations must be validated.
Unusual model or custom neural-network operators Choose the platform with verified operator support TOPS cannot compensate for CPU fallbacks or an unavailable compiler path.
Fanless or tightly sealed enclosure Choose only after thermal validation The O1 is reported to need active cooling for sustained TPU/VPU workloads.
Lowest integration risk for an existing NVIDIA application Jetson Orin Nano Super Reusing CUDA/TensorRT and JetPack-compatible components can outweigh board-level I/O differences.

Bottom line

OrangePi O1 is the better buy when you are building a connected edge appliance and value its reported BM1688 accelerator, M.2 NVMe and SATA III interfaces, dual Gigabit Ethernet, wireless connectivity, and camera/video options. Plan active cooling and validate the exact model conversion and video pipeline.

Jetson Orin Nano Super is the safer choice when your project depends on CUDA, TensorRT, robotics tooling, or a mature software ecosystem, and when the higher published INT8 ceiling is relevant to your measured workload. Neither decision should be made from TOPS alone: benchmark the complete application, including preprocessing, inference, storage, networking, and sustained thermal behavior.
