The newly reported Orange Pi O1 has a dedicated Sophgo BM1688 neural-processing engine, an onboard M.2 NVMe socket and a SATA III interface. Those are meaningful integration advantages over a Raspberry Pi 5 setup that normally needs an M.2 HAT+ or similar adapter for NVMe. They do not, however, prove that O1 is faster overall, cheaper, better supported or ready to replace Raspberry Pi in every project.
What Orange Pi O1 actually adds
CNX Software’s 2026 report describes O1 as an eight-core Arm Cortex-A53 board running at 1.65GHz, paired with a 1.2GHz RISC-V C906 co-processor and a Sophgo neural-network accelerator. The accelerator is rated at up to 16 TOPS at INT8. TOPS is a throughput figure for the dedicated AI engine, not a CPU benchmark or a measurement of general desktop performance.
Memory is reported in 8GB and 16GB LPDDR4/LPDDR4X configurations. That capacity is useful for local inference, containers and multitasking, but available software and memory bandwidth will determine how much of it an application can use effectively.

Storage is the clearest practical difference
O1 has an onboard M.2 socket
The reported M-Key PCIe 3.0 socket accepts an NVMe drive directly on the board. O1 also exposes SATA III, alongside microSD, optional eMMC and SPI flash. This gives builders several boot and bulk-storage paths without automatically consuming a USB port or adding a carrier board.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do NVMe and SATA work simultaneously?
The specification lists both interfaces, but the available report does not verify simultaneous operation, lane sharing, boot-loader behavior or the power limits for particular drives. Treat the interfaces as supported connection options until an official schematic, manual or tested software image documents concurrent use.
How Raspberry Pi 5 handles NVMe
Raspberry Pi’s official documentation describes connecting an NVMe drive to the Pi 5 PCIe interface through an M.2 HAT+ or a similar adapter. Raspberry Pi’s official SSD documentation identifies NVMe 1.4 over PCIe Gen 3. O1 therefore offers simpler physical integration for an NVMe disk; the available evidence does not establish which board delivers higher real-world throughput.

What 16 TOPS means for AI projects
The 16 TOPS INT8 rating applies to the Sophgo TPU. It can matter for workloads such as image classification, object detection or other neural-network inference that have a supported compiler, runtime and model format. It should not be added to the CPU speed, treated as a system-wide score or used to predict performance for applications that run mainly on the Cortex-A53 cores.
No verified O1 benchmark suite or software-support matrix is available in the current record. Before choosing the board for an AI appliance, confirm that the intended framework supports the BM1688 engine, that required operators are implemented and that the supplied operating-system image includes the drivers and runtime.

Video, cameras and edge connectivity
The reported video block can decode up to sixteen 1080p30 streams and encode ten. These are stated BM1688 capabilities, not an independent test of a finished O1 board, so camera formats, memory pressure, thermal limits and application software still matter.
Two four-lane MIPI CSI connectors suit multi-camera systems, while HDMI 2.0 supports output up to 4K at 60Hz. Dual Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 target gateways, vision appliances and networked edge devices. Optional 4G/5G is listed, but the modem, antenna, carrier support and regional certification are not identified.

Where Raspberry Pi 5 remains the safer known quantity
Raspberry Pi 5 has established documentation for its PCIe connection and NVMe adapter path. For O1, the current evidence does not settle operating-system maturity, kernel and driver coverage, community support, enclosure availability, power consumption, cooling requirements, retail price or regional stock. Those unknowns can outweigh a stronger interface list when a project needs predictable deployment and long-term maintenance.
| Decision point | Orange Pi O1 | Raspberry Pi 5 context |
|---|---|---|
| NVMe installation | Reported onboard M.2 M-Key PCIe 3.0 socket | Official documentation specifies an M.2 HAT+ or similar adapter for NVMe |
| AI hardware | Dedicated Sophgo TPU rated up to 16 TOPS INT8 | No comparative Raspberry Pi AI benchmark is established here |
| SATA | SATA III is listed in the O1 hardware report | The cited Pi documentation concerns PCIe/NVMe rather than an onboard SATA connector |
| Measured performance | No verified O1 benchmark supplied | No like-for-like result supplied |
Who should consider O1
- AI and vision builders: consider it when the target inference stack explicitly supports the Sophgo accelerator and INT8 execution.
- Storage-heavy edge devices: the onboard M.2 and listed SATA interface may reduce adapter and cabling complexity, subject to confirmation of simultaneous use and power limits.
- Multi-camera or network gateways: the two CSI connectors, dual Gigabit Ethernet and optional cellular connectivity fit designs that need several I/O paths.
- Conservative production deployments: wait for official software images, documentation, pricing and availability if supportability is more important than interface density.
Checks to make before buying
- Find an official O1 product page or manual confirming the exact board revision and connector pinouts.
- Verify the operating system, kernel version, boot media support and BM1688 AI runtime for the models you plan to run.
- Confirm whether NVMe and SATA can operate concurrently and whether the board supplies adequate power for the chosen drives.
- Check cooling guidance, enclosure fit and sustained-load behavior; no thermal measurements are established in the current documentation.
- Confirm the seller’s region, launch price, warranty and stock, since verified retail figures and availability are not established.
Verdict
Orange Pi O1 makes Raspberry Pi 5 look less complete on paper for integrated AI acceleration and storage connectivity: it combines a 16-TOPS-class INT8 TPU with onboard NVMe and a listed SATA III interface. That is a compelling specification for edge-AI, camera and storage designs. It is not yet evidence of a universal Raspberry Pi replacement. Until benchmarks, software support, thermals, pricing and availability are documented, treat O1 as a promising alternative whose best advantage is hardware integration rather than a proven performance win.
