S&P 500 options were pricing a relatively quiet few sessions in mid-October 2026, followed by materially larger potential daily moves from the final week of October into early November. ORATS’ October 12 snapshot put the average one-standard-deviation move at about ±0.55% for October 13–16, rising to ±0.81% for October 26–30 and ±0.85% for November 2–6. That is roughly 47% and 55% above the mid-October pace, respectively.
ORATS founder Matt Amberson called the setup “the calm before the storm.” The phrase describes option pricing around a crowded catalyst calendar; it does not mean a crash is inevitable or that options are predicting a decline.
What the options market is signaling
The figures are implied, close-to-close moves in either direction. ORATS derived them from forward implied variance between consecutive daily SPX expirations and reported medians from 43 readings taken on October 12, 2026, between 10:00 a.m. and 1:28 p.m. Eastern Time.

For example, an implied move of ±0.81% means option prices collectively reflect a substantial likelihood of a daily close somewhere within that distance, while larger moves remain possible. Implied volatility can differ from volatility that ultimately occurs, known as realized volatility, and the estimates can change whenever option prices change.

| Period | Average implied daily move | Change from October 13–16 | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 13–16 | ±0.55% | Baseline | Quietest period in the snapshot |
| October 19–23 | ±0.59% | About 7% higher | Modest increase before the main catalyst cluster |
| October 26–30 | ±0.81% | About 47% higher | Fed decision, earnings and economic data arrive |
| November 2–6 | ±0.85% | About 55% higher | Election aftermath and major labor data keep volatility elevated |
The repricing is broader than a few isolated event sessions. Ordinary trading days in the later weeks also carried higher implied movement, showing that traders were pricing a generally more volatile backdrop as well as specific announcement risk.
Which events could trigger larger moves?
October 14: Consumer Price Index
ORATS measured a 27% premium over that date’s normal-day baseline for the CPI release. The premium means the option market assigned extra movement risk to the announcement compared with a session without a scheduled catalyst.

October 28: Federal Reserve decision
The expected move was ±0.90%, including a 25% event premium. Rate decisions can affect Treasury yields, the dollar and equity valuations simultaneously, so the market-implied range was wider than the surrounding ordinary sessions.

Big Tech earnings reactions coincided with gross domestic product and personal consumption expenditures data. ORATS put the total expected move at ±0.94% and the event premium at 26%. This combination creates overlapping sources of information rather than a single, easily isolated risk.

November 3: U.S. midterm election
ORATS found little additional premium above the normal-day baseline on the day before the vote. That does not imply the election was irrelevant; it indicates that the options market was not assigning a large incremental one-day shock to November 3 itself.
November 4: Post-election trading, ADP and ISM Services
The day after the vote carried the largest highlighted total estimate, ±1.02%, with a 24% event premium. Investors could be reacting to election results while also digesting ADP employment and ISM Services reports, making the session a concentrated test of both policy expectations and economic-growth assumptions.

November 6: October employment report
Movement was elevated, but the higher estimate primarily reflected the already higher underlying volatility level rather than an unusually large incremental event premium for the jobs report itself.
How the cumulative range widens
Using an October 12 intraday SPX reference level of 7,804, the sequence of implied daily moves produced an approximate one-standard-deviation range of 7,559 to 8,049 by November 6. If the quieter ±0.55% pace had remained constant throughout, the comparable range would have been about 7,617 to 7,991.

This comparison illustrates compounding uncertainty across several weeks. It is not a directional forecast: the wider band includes both gains and losses, and it does not say where the index will finish inside or outside the range.

In this context, “calm” refers to the lower near-term implied daily ranges, while “storm” refers to the later concentration of events and the higher volatility level priced into those expirations. The metaphor should not be translated into “a crash is coming.” Options prices compensate traders for risk in either direction, and a realized move can be smaller or larger than the implied estimate.
- It is a pricing snapshot: the numbers describe what options implied on October 12, 2026, not a permanent market regime.
- It is not a market call: ± values allow upward and downward moves and contain no stated directional prediction.
- Event premiums are relative: each premium compares an event date with that date’s normal-day baseline, not with the quietest week in the entire period.
- Calendar risk and background risk differ: later weeks had higher ordinary-session volatility even apart from the named announcements.
What can change before the dates arrive
Implied volatility responds continuously to option supply and demand, index levels, interest rates, and new information. A surprise economic release, a change in Federal Reserve expectations, an earnings preannouncement or a shift in election probabilities could raise or lower the quoted ranges before any listed date. The October 12 readings therefore provide a dated benchmark for risk pricing, not a guarantee of the eventual moves.

What this means for readers and investors
For anyone monitoring an S&P 500 portfolio, the practical message is that the market was pricing a quieter immediate horizon and a wider distribution of outcomes around late October and early November. Position sizes, hedges and stop levels based on mid-October’s ±0.55% daily assumption could underestimate the range implied for the later weeks. Conversely, a wider implied range can overstate realized volatility if the catalysts pass without surprises. The useful question is not whether the “storm” must arrive, but whether a portfolio can withstand either direction of the larger moves being priced.
