Optimum does not publish one cancellation fee that applies to every residential internet customer. You may owe an early cancellation fee if your account has a required promotional term and you cancel before it ends; the amount depends on your agreement and account. Unpaid service charges and charges for equipment you do not return are separate from that fee.
When Optimum may charge an early cancellation fee
Optimum’s residential terms say that a customer who cancels, terminates, or downgrades service before completing a required promotional term may owe an applicable early cancellation fee. The terms also allow charges for services already used and equipment purchased but not paid for.
This does not mean every Optimum internet plan has a cancellation fee. The public terms do not give a universal amount or establish whether a particular account has a required term. Check the service agreement and promotion details for your account, or ask Optimum to confirm whether an early cancellation fee applies and what amount it would be.
What can appear on the final bill
Separate the early cancellation fee from other amounts that may remain due. The account’s final charges can depend on its service period, outstanding balance, and equipment status.

- Service charges: The terms say outstanding charges for services used remain payable.
- Unpaid equipment purchases: Charges for equipment purchased but not paid for may remain due.
- Unreturned provider equipment: Optimum may charge for equipment not returned. This is an equipment charge, not the early cancellation fee.
Optimum’s pricing and packages page includes a rate-card category for disconnecting without returning equipment. The applicable charge depends on the equipment and location, so consult the current rate card and your return instructions rather than assuming one amount.
When cancellation takes effect
Under the residential terms, a cancellation requested after a service period has begun generally takes effect at the end of that period, subject to applicable law. The request date therefore may not be the date service or billing stops. Ask Optimum to confirm the effective cancellation date for your account and review the final bill against that date.

Return Optimum equipment and keep proof
Optimum’s residential terms require prompt return of provider equipment after service ends and permit a charge under the current schedule for equipment that is not returned. Ask which items belong to Optimum, the return method and deadline, and how to confirm receipt. Keep the return receipt or other proof in case an equipment charge appears later.
Check add-on subscriptions separately
Optimum’s disclosures for WiFi, Security & Support Services for Optimum Internet describe add-ons as monthly subscriptions that renew automatically and can generally be canceled effective at the end of the current billing period. The disclosures list state-specific exceptions for particular services. Those terms concern the add-ons, not the underlying internet plan; check the disclosure for the specific subscription and applicable state rules.

What to do before canceling
- Find your residential service agreement and any promotion or minimum-term details. Confirm whether the account has a required promotional term and when it ends.
- Ask Optimum to confirm the effective cancellation date and any applicable early cancellation fee. Keep the response in writing or save the account record.
- Ask which provider-owned equipment must be returned, how to return it, and by when. Save proof of return.
- Review the final bill for charges through the confirmed service-period end date, unpaid balances, and any equipment charge.
- If you have an add-on subscription, check its separate cancellation disclosure and any applicable state exception.
These terms address residential service; Optimum’s business terms are different. Your exact charges cannot be determined from general public terms alone because they depend on your agreement, promotion, account status, equipment, and location. Terms and rate schedules can change, so check the current documents for your account.
