OSFP and QSFP-DD are pluggable hardware form factors; Ethernet and InfiniBand are networking standards. A module works only when its shell, electrical lanes, optical design, management interface, firmware and protocol all match the host port. The label “400G” alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

This guide explains the differences, lane capacities, media and connectors, breakout options, management behavior, thermal issues and a practical buying process for 400G and 800G deployments.

What OSFP and QSFP-DD actually describe

A transceiver has two distinct identities. Its form factor determines how it fits the cage, connector and cooling system in a switch or adapter. Its application standard determines signaling, encoding, optical reach, diagnostics and interoperability. OSFP and QSFP-DD name the first category. Ethernet and InfiniBand belong to the second.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consequently, two modules can both be advertised as 400G while remaining incompatible. They may use different shells, lane arrangements, firmware expectations, wavelengths, fiber types or host-management behavior. Procurement must specify the complete combination rather than speed alone.

OSFP in brief

The OSFP MSA defines a pluggable form factor with eight high-speed electrical lanes. The current OSFP MSA FAQ describes operation at up to 400 Gbps using 8 × 50G lanes, 800 Gbps using 8 × 100G lanes, or 1.6 Tbps using 8 × 200G lanes. Standard OSFP has an integrated heatsink; OSFP-RHS uses a separate riding heatsink. Those cooling variants are mechanical choices that must match the host cage.

OSFP-XD is a separate design. The OSFP MSA states that OSFP and OSFP-XD are not cross-compatible because their mechanical and electrical implementations differ. Do not treat the “OSFP” part of both names as proof that either module can be inserted into the other receptacle.

The original OSFP announcement in 2017 targeted the 400G optics range and future 800G optics. It also described backward compatibility with 100G QSFP through a simple adapter. That is an adapter-based migration path, not direct insertion of a standard 100G QSFP module into an OSFP cage.

QSFP-DD in brief

QSFP-DD means Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Double Density. QSFP-DD Rev 2.0 defines an eight-channel module, cage and connector system supporting up to 400 Gb/s over an 8 × 50 Gb/s electrical interface. Its “double density” comes from adding four electrical channels to the four used by earlier QSFP generations.

The later QSFP-DD Hardware Rev 7.1 specification covers eight-lane and four-lane modules and cables for Ethernet, InfiniBand and Fibre Channel. It includes multimode-fiber, single-mode-fiber and copper implementations. A QSFP-DD port can therefore host products for several interconnect families, provided the particular host and module support the same requirements.

QSFP-DD also preserves a defined lower-lane migration path. When a compatible QSFP+, QSFP28 or other four-lane QSFP module is inserted into a QSFP-DD, QSFP-DD800 or QSFP-DD1600 socket, the host lanes numbered 5–8 are physically not connected and should be ignored; the lower-lane module uses lanes 1–4. Actual support remains a host implementation feature, so the platform documentation must confirm it.

OSFP versus QSFP-DD: the differences that affect a deployment

Comparison point OSFP QSFP-DD
Electrical lanes Eight high-speed lanes; the OSFP MSA describes 8 × 50G, 8 × 100G and 8 × 200G generations. Eight-channel architecture; QSFP-DD Rev 2.0 specifies up to 8 × 50 Gb/s (400 Gb/s aggregate), with later hardware revisions covering additional implementations.
Typical aggregate generation 400G, 800G and, in the current FAQ, up to 1.6T. 400G in Rev 2.0; later QSFP-DD families include 800G and 1.6T host designs.
Mechanical interchange Not interchangeable with QSFP-DD; OSFP-XD is also a different, non-cross-compatible system. Not interchangeable with OSFP. Lower-lane QSFP support is possible only where the host cage and firmware implement it.
Cooling Standard OSFP integrates a heatsink; OSFP-RHS uses a riding heatsink. Cooling and cage details vary by host and module; verify clearance and the host’s qualified thermal design.
Backward path 100G QSFP can be supported through an adapter described by the 2017 OSFP announcement. Compatible four-lane QSFP modules can use lanes 1–4 in a QSFP-DD-family port when the host supports them.
Media covered by the standards Optical and breakout implementations depend on the specific OSFP MSA release and module. Rev 7.1 explicitly covers multimode fiber, single-mode fiber and copper modules and cables.
Management Confirm the host’s management and diagnostics requirements for the chosen module. Uses the CMIS memory map; the host must handle module state, monitoring and lower-lane behavior correctly.

These are architecture-level distinctions, not a ranking. The better choice is the form factor already supported by the equipment you own or plan to deploy.

Ethernet and InfiniBand are application ecosystems, not shells

Ethernet and InfiniBand impose requirements above the physical package. They define signaling and coding expectations, link training or initialization behavior, error handling, reach classes and interoperability rules. A QSFP-DD or OSFP shell can carry either ecosystem’s optics when the module and host are qualified for that use.

Ethernet modules

An Ethernet optic must match the host’s Ethernet generation and port mode, such as a 400G or 800G interface. Optical reach, wavelength, fiber mode, connector and breakout mapping are part of that match. A module described only as “400G” leaves all of those decisions unresolved.

InfiniBand modules

InfiniBand uses its own architecture specifications and qualification expectations. A physically suitable OSFP or QSFP-DD module may still fail to initialize if it lacks the required InfiniBand coding, firmware behavior or host qualification. Select an optic explicitly identified for the InfiniBand generation and adapter or switch family in use.

Why the same shell can serve both

QSFP-DD Rev 7.1 lists IEEE 802.3 and InfiniBand Architecture specifications among related standards and defines module families for Ethernet, InfiniBand and Fibre Channel. The shell supplies density and electrical connectivity; the optical and management implementation supplies the protocol-specific behavior.

Lane rates and speed labels: calculate the real interface

Aggregate bandwidth is the lane rate multiplied by the number of active electrical lanes. The OSFP MSA’s named figures are:

  • 8 × 50G = 400 Gbps
  • 8 × 100G = 800 Gbps
  • 8 × 200G = 1.6 Tbps

QSFP-DD Rev 2.0’s 400G design is likewise 8 × 50 Gb/s. A module’s optical lane arrangement may differ from the host’s electrical lane arrangement, so inspect the module datasheet and port configuration rather than inferring everything from the aggregate number.

Breakout arithmetic

Breakout divides a high-speed host interface into independent lower-speed links. Common examples include 1 × 800G to 2 × 400G or 1 × 800G to 8 × 100G. The host must support that exact breakout mode, and the transceiver or cable must expose the required lane and connector mapping. A passive cable with the wrong mapping cannot be corrected by changing software settings.

Optical media, reach and connector choices

Choose the transmission medium before choosing a part number. Multimode fiber is generally used for shorter data-center links; single-mode fiber supports longer reaches and different optical budgets; copper direct-attach implementations avoid optical conversion over short distances. The QSFP-DD Rev 7.1 specification includes all three categories, but a particular module supports only one of them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connector families

Connector choice affects patching, polarity and breakout design. Depending on the OSFP implementation, dual 400G and octal 100G breakout options can use dual LC, dual Mini-LC, dual MPO or octal SN/MDC connectors. QSFP-DD modules and cables likewise require the connector specified by their optical or copper design.

Do not assume that a connector adapter preserves the optical budget or lane mapping. The OSFP 4.0 announcement emphasized using standard fiber connectors to avoid the performance impact and cost of extra adapter cables, splitter cables or patch panels. In a new installation, select the native connector and breakout assembly that matches the structured cabling plan.

Reach and wavelength

Two modules with the same shell and nominal speed can have different reach classes or wavelengths. Match the specified distance, fiber mode, wavelength and loss budget to the installed plant. If the module datasheet does not state a required value, treat it as unknown rather than assuming a generic data-center reach.

Management, coding and thermal compatibility

CMIS behavior

QSFP-DD management uses the Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS) memory map. CMIS governs how the host reads identification, capabilities, digital diagnostics and module state. A host may reject a module that is mechanically correct but reports unsupported capabilities or state transitions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For four-lane QSFP modules in a QSFP-DD-family socket, lanes 5–8 are physically absent and should be ignored. The host’s firmware must recognize that condition instead of reporting false lane faults. Check the platform release notes for supported CMIS revisions and module firmware combinations.

Vendor coding and warranty

Many switches and adapters enforce an allow-list or vendor coding policy. Coding is separate from the optical standard: an optic can meet an Ethernet or InfiniBand specification and still be rejected by a host that requires approved identification data. Verify supported coding, firmware versions and warranty terms before ordering, especially for third-party or recoded modules.

Thermal clearance

At 400G and above, heat is a system constraint. Confirm whether the cage expects an integrated OSFP heatsink, an OSFP-RHS riding heatsink or a QSFP-DD-specific thermal solution. Check neighboring-port spacing, airflow direction and the host’s maximum module power. A module that fits physically can still cause throttling or shutdown if its thermal envelope exceeds the platform design.

Can an OSFP optic go in a QSFP-DD port?

No, not by direct insertion. OSFP and QSFP-DD use different mechanical systems, keying and electrical arrangements. An adapter can provide a migration path only when an adapter exists for that exact combination and the host supports the resulting electrical, optical, management and thermal behavior.

The reverse assumption is also unsafe: a QSFP-DD optic is not an OSFP optic merely because both may carry 400G or 800G. Treat the receptacle type as a hard compatibility requirement, then validate the protocol and module coding.

Step-by-step buying and deployment checklist

  1. Identify the exact receptacle. Record whether the port is OSFP, OSFP-RHS, QSFP-DD, QSFP-DD800, QSFP-DD1600 or another design. Use the host’s hardware guide, not a photograph.
  2. Confirm electrical generation. Match the number and rate of host lanes to the module. A nominal 400G label does not prove that an 8 × 50G host can accept every 400G implementation.
  3. Select the protocol-qualified family. Specify Ethernet or InfiniBand, its generation and the exact switch, adapter or NIC qualification list.
  4. Match the medium and reach. Choose multimode fiber, single-mode fiber or copper, then verify distance, wavelength and optical budget.
  5. Choose the connector and breakout. Confirm LC, MPO, Mini-LC, SN or MDC, polarity and whether the design is 1 × 800G to 2 × 400G, 8 × 100G or another mapping.
  6. Check management support. Verify CMIS revision, diagnostics, module-state handling and support for lower-lane QSFP modules where relevant.
  7. Verify coding and firmware. Ask whether the host requires coded optics, a minimum firmware release or an approved part list.
  8. Validate thermal and mechanical clearance. Check heatsink style, neighboring-port spacing, airflow and module power against the host specification.
  9. Plan the retrofit. If migrating 100G QSFP equipment to OSFP, confirm the required adapter and the host’s support for that adapter. For QSFP-DD, confirm that four-lane legacy modules use lanes 1–4 as documented.
  10. Test the complete link. Bring up both ends with the intended cable plant, inspect CMIS diagnostics and verify negotiated speed, lane health and error counters before expanding the deployment.

Common failure symptoms and fixes

The module will not seat

The shell or keying is wrong. Stop rather than forcing it; compare the port label and mechanical drawing with the module family. OSFP, QSFP-DD and OSFP-XD are not interchangeable.

The host detects a module but keeps the link down

Check protocol qualification, lane rate, firmware, coding and breakout configuration. Detection proves only that management communication occurred; it does not prove that the optical lanes or protocol match.

Legacy QSFP reports missing lanes

In a QSFP-DD-family socket, lanes 5–8 are not connected for a four-lane QSFP module. The host should ignore them. Update host firmware or configuration if it treats those lanes as failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Link flaps under load

Inspect thermal alarms, module power, airflow and optical diagnostics. Then verify fiber polarity, connector cleanliness, reach class and loss budget. A marginal optical path can pass initial detection and fail at operating temperature.

Breakout links appear in the wrong order

Compare the cable’s lane map and connector polarity with the host’s breakout profile. Reconfigure the switch only after confirming that the physical assembly implements the same mapping.

How to specify a module in a purchase request

Write a complete description such as: “800G OSFP, Ethernet, specified reach and wavelength, single-mode fiber, dual MPO, host-qualified coding, CMIS-supported diagnostics, and 2 × 400G breakout.” For an InfiniBand deployment, replace the Ethernet qualification with the exact InfiniBand generation and adapter or switch requirement.

Include the host port type, lane generation, medium, connector, breakout mode, coding policy and thermal restrictions in the request. This prevents a supplier from substituting a physically similar but electrically or protocol-incompatible part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key takeaways

  • OSFP and QSFP-DD identify dense pluggable hardware interfaces; Ethernet and InfiniBand identify networking ecosystems.
  • OSFP supports eight electrical lanes and is documented for 400G, 800G and up to 1.6T generations; QSFP-DD Rev 2.0 defines 400G over eight 50G lanes, with later revisions covering additional designs.
  • OSFP cannot be inserted directly into a QSFP-DD port, and OSFP-XD is not cross-compatible with OSFP.
  • QSFP-DD ports may accept four-lane QSFP modules on lanes 1–4 when the host implements the required behavior; OSFP’s 100G QSFP path uses an adapter.
  • Speed, shell, protocol, medium, connector, breakout, CMIS, coding, firmware and thermal clearance all belong in a compatibility decision.
