Optical see-through glasses let you look directly at the physical world through transparent optics while digital graphics are projected into that view. Video-passthrough headsets put cameras between you and the physical world: cameras capture the room, and internal displays show a live video feed that software can combine with virtual objects. Choose optical see-through when uninterrupted direct vision is the priority; choose video passthrough when you need richer, software-controlled occlusion, spatial blending, and large virtual screens. Neither category is automatically safer, clearer, or more comfortable, so the task, lighting, fit, field of view, latency, and boundary controls matter more than the label.

What “optical see-through” and “video passthrough” actually mean

Optical see-through: your eyes receive the real scene directly

An optical-see-through device uses transparent or semi-transparent optics. Ambient light from the room travels through the lens to your eyes, while a display system adds computer-generated text, icons, or three-dimensional objects. Microsoft describes HoloLens as a holographic device with a “See-through display” that lets the wearer see the physical environment: Microsoft’s mixed-reality overview.

The key property is the viewing path: the physical scene is not first recorded and reconstructed for you. Your eyes continue to see the room optically, and the device attempts to place digital imagery into that view. The result can feel immediate and natural for the parts of the scene that remain unobstructed, but the display has to add light on top of whatever is already present. Bright rooms, dark rooms, reflective surfaces, lens tint, focus, and the particular optical design all affect how obvious or legible an overlay is.

Video passthrough: cameras and displays stand between you and the room

In a video-passthrough system, external cameras capture the environment. Screens inside the headset show that camera feed, and software composites virtual imagery with it. Apple’s developer guidance defines passthrough as real-time video from a device’s external cameras: Apple’s immersive-experiences guidance.

This camera-mediated path gives software much more control over the image. It can dim or mask parts of the feed, draw virtual objects in front of real ones, and place large virtual screens around you. It also introduces a conversion step: the image you see depends on cameras, exposure, sensor processing, display characteristics, tracking, and the time needed to capture and present each frame. It is therefore not identical to natural eyesight, even when it looks convincing.

The differences that matter when you use one

Decision factor Optical see-through Video passthrough
What reaches your eyes Direct light from the real scene plus projected graphics. A camera image on internal displays, plus rendered graphics.
Digital occlusion and masking Constrained by transparent optics and the display’s ability to add light; hiding a real object is difficult. Software can mask, dim, or replace portions of the camera feed and place virtual objects in front of it.
Depth and color fidelity The physical scene is viewed directly, although the overlay still has its own calibration limits. Camera and display processing can alter depth cues, color, contrast, dynamic range, and low-light detail.
Field of view Depends on the optical waveguide or lens design; the digital overlay may occupy only part of the direct view. Limited by cameras, displays, and headset optics; the entire view is mediated by the device.
Latency sources Overlay rendering, tracking, and optical alignment affect the virtual image; the real scene itself is not a video stream. Capture, image processing, rendering, display scanout, and tracking all contribute to motion-to-photon delay.
Peripheral awareness Can remain optically available outside the display area, but the frame and lenses still vary by device. Peripheral vision is bounded by cameras and display coverage and can be reduced by the headset enclosure.
Best fit Tasks where direct awareness of surroundings and hands is more important than total scene control. Tasks that benefit from virtual screens, strong scene compositing, occlusion, or immersive environments.
Evidence status Examples include Microsoft’s HoloLens definition and Meta’s Orion research device; they are not equivalent products. Examples include Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3; study results apply only to the tested models and protocols.

These are design tendencies, not guarantees. A particular optical device may have a wider overlay than another, and a particular passthrough headset may have better camera processing than a competing model. Compare measured or manufacturer-published specifications for the exact device you are considering.

Why passthrough can blend objects more convincingly—and still look less natural

Because a passthrough headset controls the complete image shown on its displays, it can decide which pixels represent the room and which represent a virtual object. That makes several effects practical:

  • A virtual desk can appear to sit behind a real table if the software has a depth map or scene mesh.
  • Virtual windows can be placed at fixed positions and remain there as you move.
  • The room feed can be darkened or replaced to create an enclosed virtual environment.
  • Real objects can be selectively hidden or highlighted in the displayed image.

Optical see-through systems generally add light without removing the light from a real object. A bright physical wall can wash out a dark hologram, and a virtual object cannot reliably block a real chair from your eyes. Occlusion is therefore a core architectural difference rather than a software feature that every device can add later.

The cost of camera control is that passthrough must recreate visual cues. Meta’s health guidance says, “Passthrough allows users to have more awareness of the physical environment; however, it is not equivalent to natural human vision.” The same guidance notes that head-mounted displays have limited fields of view and are less accurate at representing cues such as depth and color: Meta’s passthrough safety guidance (updated July 25, 2025). Treat a camera view as an aid to awareness, not as a perfect replacement for looking directly at the room.

Field of view, brightness, and visibility are device-specific

“Field of view” can mean the area covered by the digital overlay, the camera capture area, or the total optical view available to the wearer. Ask which one a specification describes before comparing numbers.

As historical context, a Microsoft Research FoveAR page published November 9, 2015, said optical designs and weight constraints at that time limited diagonal field of view to less than 40 degrees: Microsoft Research’s FoveAR page. That figure describes the designs discussed in that 2015 work; it is not a current limit for every optical-see-through product.

Meta’s Orion page reports approximately a 70-degree field of view for its optical AR research device, along with micro-LED projectors, silicon-carbide optics, and an EMG wristband: Meta Orion. These are manufacturer claims about Orion, not an independent category benchmark, and the page does not establish ordinary consumer retail availability.

Brightness has a similar tradeoff. An optical overlay must remain visible against the real background, so a pale wall, sunlight, or a high-contrast scene can change legibility. A passthrough image can be digitally brightened or tone-mapped, but the camera sensor and display still have finite dynamic range. In a dark room, camera noise and loss of color or contrast can become more noticeable than they would be to naked eyes.

Latency and image stability: read claims in context

With optical see-through, the room itself does not wait for a camera frame. The virtual layer still has to be rendered, tracked, and aligned with your head and surroundings. Misalignment can make a hologram appear to swim, jump, or lag when you move.

With passthrough, the full path includes camera exposure, sensor transfer, image processing, scene understanding, rendering, display refresh, and head tracking. Small delays can make the room view feel less stable during quick head turns. Apple says the Vision Pro R1 chip processes input from 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones and streams new images to the displays within 12 milliseconds: Apple’s June 5, 2023 announcement. That is Apple’s claim for that system, not a universal passthrough latency figure or an independent benchmark for all headsets.

When evaluating a device, look for the complete measurement conditions: refresh rate, test motion, lighting, software version, and whether the number covers camera-to-display delay or only one component. A low published figure does not guarantee that every application will feel stable if tracking or rendering drops frames.

What the available user studies do—and do not—show

A 31-participant passthrough comparison

A 2025 study had 31 participants read text and solve a puzzle using Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3, and Varjo XR3. Its abstract reports that Vision Pro received the highest passthrough-quality ratings among those tested: the study abstract. This is a result for three devices, a defined task set, and the researchers’ protocol. It does not prove that every Vision Pro use case is superior or that other passthrough products will rank the same way.

A 2026 perceptual preprint

Wang, Ping, Xu, Li, and Liang report testing visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and color vision on Apple Vision Pro, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. Their 2026 preprint says the tested systems did not match naked-eye dynamic range and adaptability, with greater degradation in low light: the preprint. Because this is a preprint tied to specific devices and a specific protocol, use it as evidence of measurable limitations, not as a scorecard for an entire category.

Safety: never treat a camera view as a boundary

Passthrough can show enough of a room to help you orient yourself, but virtual content can intersect with unmarked physical objects or appear beyond the room when scene or boundary information is missing. Meta’s guidance says scene information and passthrough do not substitute for the safety mechanisms provided by a boundary. It recommends clearing the activity area, avoiding uneven surfaces such as stairs or ramps, and removing fragile objects: Meta’s passthrough health guidance.

Optical see-through avoids the camera-reconstruction step, but it is not automatically safe. The frame, lenses, display brightness, and the user’s attention can still restrict awareness. A bright overlay can obscure a hand or tool, and a narrow digital field of view can make an important instruction disappear when you look away from it.

For either category:

  • Do not drive, cycle in traffic, climb, work near exposed machinery, or handle hazardous materials while relying on a head-mounted display.
  • Validate any precision movement, medical, industrial, or laboratory workflow with the responsible safety team and the exact device and application.
  • Keep a clear physical area, establish a boundary, and use a spotter when a task involves movement or obstacles.
  • Assume that tracking, scene understanding, or camera visibility can fail in glare, darkness, reflective rooms, or featureless spaces.

Which type fits your task?

Choose optical see-through when direct awareness is the priority

Optical see-through is usually the better starting point when you need to keep looking at people, tools, or the room without replacing the scene with a camera feed. Examples include hands-busy guidance, quick reference instructions, spatial annotations, and situations where natural depth and color cues are important. You still need to check the exact device’s overlay field of view, brightness, focus range, and fit; “see-through” does not guarantee a wide or bright holographic image.

Choose video passthrough when software control is the priority

Passthrough is usually the better fit when you need virtual monitors, room-scale interfaces, strong occlusion, a fully immersive mode, or the ability to transform the complete view. It can make a virtual object appear behind a real surface in ways transparent optics generally cannot. Accept that the room image is camera-mediated and test it in the lighting and motion conditions of your work.

Use a decision sequence instead of a brand label

  1. Identify the physical-risk level. If a wrong depth cue or missed obstacle could cause injury, require task-specific validation before considering either category.
  2. Decide whether direct sight is non-negotiable. If yes, start with optical see-through; if no, continue.
  3. List the digital effects you need. Occlusion, masking, virtual screens, and a fully replaced environment favor passthrough.
  4. Test the lighting. Check sunlight, shadows, low light, reflective surfaces, and rapid head movement rather than relying on a showroom demo.
  5. Measure the usable view. Ask how much of the stated field of view is available to the digital overlay, how much is captured by cameras, and what remains visible in peripheral vision.
  6. Check fit and comfort on the actual wearer. Weight balance, lens position, prescription compatibility, and pressure points vary by device and cannot be inferred from the technology category.

A practical evaluation checklist

Use this checklist when you can try the exact model or obtain a returnable evaluation unit:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • View the room while standing still and walking slowly. Look for image swimming, judder, exposure shifts, and distracting seams.
  • Read small text at several distances. Test the font sizes and contrast your application actually requires.
  • Check bright and dark areas together. A doorway, window, or shiny surface can reveal dynamic-range limits.
  • Look toward the edge of the view. Note where overlays disappear and whether the frame blocks useful peripheral vision.
  • Reach for real objects. Confirm that the displayed room and your hand position agree before attempting a precision task.
  • Turn quickly and look down. These movements expose tracking loss, passthrough delay, and fit problems.
  • Repeat with your intended prescription, protective eyewear, or head covering. Accessories can alter eye relief and alignment.
  • Test the boundary and recovery behavior. Know what the system shows when tracking or scene understanding is unavailable.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“See-through” means the overlay is always visible

Transparent optics do not guarantee high contrast. Ask about luminance, tint, optical efficiency, overlay size, and performance in your brightest expected environment.

“Passthrough” means natural eyesight

It does not. Camera exposure, display range, processing, and limited field of view can change the appearance of depth, color, and low-light detail. Keep physical boundaries and ordinary safety practices in place.

It may describe only the diagonal optical window, the camera capture area, or the digital overlay. Request the definition and measurement method before comparing devices.

A manufacturer latency claim applies to every headset

Apple’s “within 12 milliseconds” statement applies to the Vision Pro R1 pipeline as described by Apple. It is not a category-wide benchmark. Compare like-for-like measurements and test the application you will run.

A study ranking is a universal product verdict

The 31-participant comparison and the 2026 perceptual preprint each tested named devices under defined protocols. Their findings are useful evidence, but they do not replace a trial under your lighting, software, prescription, and task conditions.

Which should you choose?

Choose optical see-through when your first requirement is an unobstructed, direct view of the physical world and your digital content can remain an overlay. Choose video passthrough when you need software to control the entire image, create convincing occlusion, place virtual screens, or switch into a fully virtual environment. If safety, precision, or low-light performance is central, make the decision only after testing the exact device and application in the real workspace. The category tells you how the image reaches your eyes; the task determines whether that tradeoff is acceptable.
