The optical pascal is a method for realizing pressure from measurements of gas refractivity, temperature and fixed SI constants. It is not a new unit and it has not replaced pressure balances, manometers or calibrated transducers. The method became practical after the kelvin was redefined in 2019, and a NIST-led result published online on June 17, 2025 demonstrated a key advance using argon and two optical wavelengths.
What is the optical pascal?
The pascal remains the SI unit of pressure. An optical pascal is a way to realize that unit: instead of inferring pressure primarily from a mechanical force or a liquid column, a laboratory determines the number density of gas molecules by measuring how the gas changes light, then combines that density with temperature and the Boltzmann constant.
The central relationship is the ideal-gas equation, p = n kB T, where p is pressure, n is particle number density, kB is the Boltzmann constant and T is thermodynamic temperature. At sufficiently low densities, corrections for real-gas behavior can be calculated and included. If a measurement supplies n optically and T independently, pressure follows from quantities traceable to the SI.

How did redefining the kelvin change pressure measurement?
Before 2019, the kelvin was defined by assigning the triple point of water a temperature of exactly 273.16 K. Since May 2019, the definition fixes the Boltzmann constant at exactly 1.380649 × 10−23 J K−1. That change makes the thermodynamic link between temperature, molecular energy and gas pressure explicit in the SI.
For optical barometry, this matters because gas density is not enough on its own: pressure also depends on temperature. With the Boltzmann constant fixed, a measured density and a measured thermodynamic temperature can be combined without relying on a particular physical artefact as the definition of temperature. The kelvin was redefined; the pascal was not. The optical method is therefore a new realization route for the existing pascal, not an official change to the pressure unit.
The older water-triple-point concept still has a practical role. NIST describes triple-point cells as convenient thermometers for calibration. A described cell is prepared at 611.657 Pa, and the isotope composition of its water must be controlled because isotopic differences shift the realized temperature. Among laboratory-grade cells, NIST reports an approximate spread of 50 μK in actual triple-point values around 273.16 K. Those details illustrate why modern thermometry uses fixed constants for the definition while retaining carefully characterized physical cells for routine calibration.

Gas refractivity is the change in light speed, wavelength or phase caused by a gas. At low pressure, refractivity is closely related to the number of molecules along the optical path. A cavity with a precisely known length can compare its resonance with gas inside against the resonance of the same cavity evacuated. The frequency or wavelength shift reveals refractivity, and a model of the gas converts refractivity into number density.

The measurement chain is:
- Prepare a defined optical cavity. The instrument has a known physical length and optical modes that can be measured with high precision.
- Measure the vacuum reference. The cavity is evacuated, establishing the resonance against which the gas-filled state is compared.
- Admit a known gas. Gas fills the measurement volume, changing the cavity’s optical response.
- Determine refractivity. The shift between the vacuum and gas states is related to the gas’s refractive index.
- Convert refractivity to density. The conversion uses the gas’s polarizability and, where needed, corrections for density and interactions.
- Measure temperature and volume. Temperature must be thermodynamic and the relevant cavity volume must be known or characterized.
- Calculate pressure. Density, temperature and the fixed Boltzmann constant are combined through the gas equation and applicable corrections.
Polarizability is the extent to which a gas molecule’s electrons are displaced by an electric field in the light wave. It determines how strongly the gas responds optically. An accurate polarizability value is therefore essential: an error in that property becomes an error in the inferred pressure.
What did the 2025 NIST result demonstrate?
Patrick Egan and Jack Stone of NIST, working with Yuanchao Yang of China’s National Institute of Metrology, reported a “definitive measurement of the optical pascal.” Their paper, Demonstration of dispersion gas barometry, appeared online June 17, 2025, in Physical Review Applied, volume 23, article 064041. NIST’s June 26, 2025 account describes the work as overcoming a major obstacle in measuring gas pressure through light passing through a gas.
The obstacle was mechanical rather than purely optical. Pressure from the gas deforms the cavity or another part of the apparatus used to measure refractivity. That deformation changes the measured optical path and can look like a density change. NIST reports that the deformation contribution is effectively wavelength-independent, whereas gas dispersion—the wavelength dependence of refractivity—changes the optical response with wavelength.

Why argon was chosen
Argon has a stronger optical response than helium, so a given low-pressure change produces a larger refractive signal and is easier to resolve experimentally. Helium has a simpler electronic structure, which makes its polarizability especially amenable to accurate calculation, and earlier optical-pressure work used that advantage. Its weaker refractive effect at low pressure, however, reduces the size of the signal that an instrument must detect. Argon offers a practical signal-strength benefit, provided its polarizability is measured and modeled accurately.
Optical barometry compared with established pressure standards
Different pressure technologies answer the same measurement question using different physical principles. The following comparison reflects the distinctions established by NIST’s historical and 2025 accounts; a complete current, instrument-by-instrument performance ranking is not established.
| Method | Physical principle | Traceability and calibration | Uncertainty and pressure range | Requirements and maturity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure balance | Mechanical force balances a pressure acting on a piston and effective area. | Requires characterized masses, area, gravity and supporting measurements; used as a primary reference. | Exact current values for a universal range comparison are not stated in the cited accounts. | Established laboratory standard with substantial mechanical and environmental controls. |
| Liquid manometer | Pressure is inferred from the height difference of a liquid column, historically including mercury. | Depends on liquid density, column height, gravity, temperature and geometry. | Performance depends on fluid, height and operating conditions; no single current value applies to all designs. | Long-established primary or reference method, but large columns and liquid handling can limit use. |
| Digital pressure transducer | A sensor converts pressure-driven mechanical or electrical changes into a digital reading. | Normally calibrated through a chain leading back to a primary standard. | Varies widely by sensor technology and application; no blanket comparison is supported. | Highly mature and convenient for field and industrial use, but not normally a primary realization by itself. |
| Optical pascal | Gas refractivity gives number density, which is combined with temperature and the Boltzmann constant. | Potentially direct SI traceability through optical frequency or wavelength, temperature, volume and gas properties. | The 2025 demonstration establishes the method; a complete commercial performance map and universal pressure range are not stated. | Advanced laboratory technique. Broad replacement of existing standards has not been demonstrated. |
The important difference is the traceability chain. A transducer used on a factory line may be excellent for its purpose but still depends on calibration against a reference. An optical realization could, in principle, let a laboratory establish pressure from measured optical and thermodynamic quantities rather than shipping every instrument to a national metrology institute. That is a possible future benefit, not a claim that current calibration networks are obsolete.

What are the practical advantages?
- A route tied to constants: the pressure result can be connected to the fixed Boltzmann constant, measured temperature, cavity dimensions and optical frequency or wavelength.
- Less dependence on mechanical artefacts: the primary signal comes from molecular response to light rather than piston friction, mass loading or a tall liquid column.
- Potentially shorter calibration dissemination: laboratories that develop the capability could establish an optical scale locally instead of sending every instrument to NIST.
- Compatibility with precision thermometry: the same SI framework links temperature and density, allowing pressure and temperature measurements to be treated in one coherent system.
These advantages come with demanding requirements: a stable cavity, vacuum capability, accurate wavelength control, precise temperature measurement, a well-characterized gas, knowledge of polarizability and corrections for gas non-ideality and mechanical deformation.

Where could an optical pascal matter?
NIST identifies pressure-sensitive work in petroleum refining, aircraft altimeters, internal-combustion engines, turbines, leak detection, microchip manufacture and aerospace. In these fields, pressure errors can affect process yield, fuel or combustion behavior, altitude calculation, leak thresholds and the performance of high-value hardware.
For most of those applications, the immediate instrument will remain a practical transducer or gauge. The optical pascal would sit farther up the traceability chain, as a laboratory reference used to calibrate such instruments or validate another primary standard. If compact and robust versions are developed, industrial and academic laboratories could eventually maintain their own primary-level pressure references. The 2025 report demonstrates scientific feasibility of the realization method; it does not establish broad commercial availability or adoption.

Instrument deformation
The two-wavelength strategy addresses the reported deformation effect by separating wavelength-independent distortion from wavelength-dependent gas dispersion. Future instruments still need mechanical designs, alignment procedures and models that keep residual deformation small and measurable.

Refractivity-to-density conversion depends on polarizability and on corrections for real-gas behavior. Argon’s stronger signal helps measurement, but the required atomic property must be known with commensurate accuracy. Different gases may offer different trade-offs between signal size, calculability, purity and handling.

Temperature and volume
Because pressure is proportional to both density and temperature, thermal gradients or an inadequately known cavity volume directly affect the result. A laboratory optical barometer therefore needs high-quality thermometry, stable environmental control and dimensional characterization, not just a laser and a gas cell.
Range and deployment
The cited 2025 account does not provide a complete commercial pressure range, uncertainty budget across operating conditions or comparison with every gauge technology. It also does not show that optical instruments have replaced pressure balances or manometers. Those questions require further engineering, independent evaluations and real-world calibration programs.
Why the result is important even without replacing gauges
Metrology advances often begin as a new primary realization rather than as a drop-in consumer instrument. The optical pascal gives pressure laboratories another way to connect a macroscopic quantity to molecular physics and fixed constants. That diversification can improve confidence in international comparisons and may make dissemination of a pressure scale more flexible.
The 2019 kelvin definition supplied the necessary conceptual bridge: temperature is tied to the Boltzmann constant, while refractivity supplies gas number density. The 2025 argon demonstration addressed a difficult experimental bias and showed how dispersion can be used to separate gas physics from deformation of the measuring apparatus. Together, those steps explain why efforts to redefine temperature opened a route toward a new way of measuring pressure.
Bottom line
The optical pascal is a demonstrated realization method, not a new unit or an industry-wide replacement for existing standards. It measures gas refractivity in an optical cavity, derives molecular density, and combines that result with temperature and the fixed Boltzmann constant. NIST’s June 2025 demonstration used two wavelengths to cancel pressure-induced deformation and measured argon’s polarizability, moving the technique closer to a practical primary standard. Its future value lies in direct SI traceability and potentially simpler calibration dissemination, while pressure balances, manometers and calibrated transducers remain the established tools today.
