Short answer: the standard OPPO Reno usually keeps the same generation’s processor, fast charging, ColorOS software, AI tools and basic water resistance. The Pro surcharge mainly buys better camera reach, and in some generations a larger or better-protected display, more battery, premium glass and more memory or storage. Reno12 and Reno13 show why you must compare within the same generation: their Pro advantages are not identical.
What the standard Reno gives you
OPPO positions the Reno Pro as a camera- and materials-focused step up, not a completely different phone platform. In both Reno12 and Reno13, the regular model retains the core performance and charging experience of its Pro counterpart. That means choosing the less expensive phone does not automatically mean accepting a slower chipset, slower wired charging or a different software foundation.
- Same generation chipset: Reno12 and Reno12 Pro use the 4nm Dimensity 7300-Energy platform; Reno13 and Reno13 Pro use Dimensity 8350.
- Same charging class: both generations support 80W SUPERVOOC.
- Shared software direction: OPPO lists the same broad ColorOS and AI feature set for the Reno13 pair.
- Comparable baseline protection: the Reno13 pair has IP66, IP68 and IP69 ratings and supports underwater photography under OPPO’s stated conditions. Reno12 and Reno12 Pro are both rated IP65.
The trade-off is therefore concentrated in features you notice when framing a distant subject, taking portraits, using the screen outdoors or choosing a high-capacity configuration. Exact specifications, memory options and availability vary by market, so a regional OPPO specification page should be the final check before payment.

For the Reno13 generation, the most important loss is the 3.5x optical telephoto. Optical magnification uses a separate lens rather than enlarging the main-camera image digitally, so it is especially useful for faces across a room, performers on a stage, travel details and other subjects you cannot approach. The regular Reno13 still has the same main camera resolution listed by OPPO, but its camera array does not provide that dedicated optical perspective.
The display difference is also tangible. A larger panel can make maps, video and split-screen work more comfortable, while a flat panel may suit people who prefer fewer curved-edge reflections or accidental touches. Neither shape is universally better; it is a handling preference as much as a specification.
The battery gap is incremental. It may provide additional headroom between charges, but it is not a reason to expect a fundamentally different endurance class without considering screen size, brightness, network conditions and usage. Both phones retain the same 80W charging support.

Reno12: a different Pro strategy
Reno12 and Reno12 Pro share more of their hardware than Reno13 does. OPPO’s global 2024 specifications list the same 4nm Dimensity 7300-Energy platform, 5,000mAh battery, 80W SUPERVOOC charging, 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED display, IP65 rating and 4K/30 video capability on both the front and rear cameras.
| Feature | Reno12 | Reno12 Pro | What changes in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main platform | 4nm Dimensity 7300-Energy | 4nm Dimensity 7300-Energy | Performance platform is shared. |
| Display | 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED, up to 1.07 billion colors | 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED, up to 1.07 billion colors | Size and refresh-rate headline are shared; the Pro adds stronger cover glass. |
| Rear camera addition | No listed telephoto portrait camera | 50MP telephoto portrait camera with up to 2x optical zoom | The Pro adds native optical portrait reach. |
| Front camera | Shared Reno12 front-camera platform | 50MP autofocus selfie camera with AI Portrait Retouching effects | Autofocus and the documented portrait features are Pro-only in this generation. |
| Video capability cited by OPPO | 4K/30 on front and rear cameras | 4K/30 on front and rear cameras | The cited recording mode is shared. |
| Battery and charging | 5,000mAh; 80W SUPERVOOC | 5,000mAh; 80W SUPERVOOC | There is no capacity or charging advantage for the Pro. |
| Durability | IP65 | IP65 | Water and dust rating is shared. |
| Cover glass | Not identified as Victus 2 in OPPO’s comparison | Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 | The Pro has the documented glass upgrade. |
In Reno12, the Pro premium is almost entirely about imaging and materials rather than screen size, battery or processing. OPPO describes the Pro’s 50MP telephoto portrait camera as providing up to 2x optical zoom. Its 50MP autofocus selfie camera is another meaningful difference for close-up portraits, moving subjects and users who want autofocus assistance rather than a fixed-focus front camera. The Pro also receives Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, giving it a more explicitly premium cover-glass specification.

Because both Reno12 models share the cited display, battery, charging and video capabilities, buying the Pro solely for a larger screen or longer battery life would not match OPPO’s documented differences for this generation.
Camera reach is the biggest reason to choose Pro
Optical zoom versus cropping
A dedicated telephoto camera changes the shooting options rather than merely increasing megapixels. The Reno12 Pro’s camera offers up to 2x optical zoom; the Reno13 Pro’s offers 3.5x optical zoom. Those lenses can frame a face, sign, architectural detail or stage performer without moving closer. On the standard models, you must rely on the main camera’s available framing and digital enlargement.
Digital zoom can still produce usable social-media images in good light, but it cannot recreate the optical information captured by a separate telephoto lens. The difference becomes easier to see when the subject is distant, lighting is poor or you want a tight portrait with natural separation.
Ultra-wide and main-camera continuity
The Reno13 pair keeps the same listed 50MP main camera resolution and 8MP ultra-wide camera. The standard model adds a 2MP monochrome camera instead of the Pro telephoto. That extra monochrome sensor should not be treated as an optical-zoom substitute; it does not provide the Pro’s native reach.
Selfies by generation
Reno12 is the generation where the Pro’s front-camera advantage is explicit: OPPO documents a 50MP autofocus selfie camera and additional AI Portrait Retouching effects for the Pro. Reno13 narrows that gap because both standard and Pro models are listed with a 50MP autofocus front camera. If selfies are your priority, generation matters more than the word “Pro” on the box.

- Used tempered glass, its hardness up to 9H, scratch-resistant flowers and blowout.
- Its surface used Nanometer thin oil coating which is anti-fingerprint, oil rub resistance.

Display, glass and handling differences
Reno13 Pro’s 6.83-inch Infinite View micro-curved display is larger than the standard model’s 6.59-inch flat panel. Choose it when a broad canvas for video, reading or navigation is worth the extra physical size. Choose the standard model when a flatter, more compact phone is easier to grip or store.

Reno12 does not have that size split: both versions use a 6.7-inch 120Hz OLED display capable of displaying up to 1.07 billion colors. The Pro’s documented screen-related upgrade is Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. That is a materials benefit, not a change to the cited resolution, refresh rate or color-depth headline.
Curved edges and stronger cover glass solve different problems. Curvature affects viewing geometry and handling; cover glass affects the specified material protection. A Pro purchase should not be justified by one as if it automatically includes the other.
Performance, charging, battery and durability: what you do not lose
Performance
Within each documented generation, the chipset is shared. Reno12 buyers get the same Dimensity 7300-Energy platform in either trim, and Reno13 buyers get the same Dimensity 8350. The Pro designation therefore does not indicate a faster processor in these comparisons. App performance, gaming capability and everyday responsiveness should be broadly governed by the common platform, with memory configuration potentially affecting multitasking.
Charging
Both Reno12 variants and both Reno13 variants support 80W SUPERVOOC. Buying the standard phone does not reduce the listed charging rate. Actual charging time can vary with temperature, charger and cable, battery condition and software controls; the specification establishes support for the charging system, not a universal time from empty to full.

Battery capacity
Reno12 has equal battery capacity across the pair. Reno13 Pro has a slightly larger battery than Reno13, but the Pro also has a larger display. Capacity alone cannot predict endurance because screen area, brightness, refresh behavior, radio signal and camera use all affect consumption.
Water and dust protection
For Reno13, OPPO lists IP66, IP68 and IP69 ratings for both models and advertises underwater photography under its stated conditions. For Reno12, both models are listed at IP65. The standard Reno therefore does not forfeit the documented protection level within either family. IP ratings are laboratory classifications, not permission to ignore the phone maker’s limits, port-drying guidance or warranty exclusions.
Memory, storage and the real price of the Pro tier
The Reno13 launch lineup in India shows a second Pro advantage beyond cameras. The standard model was listed with 8GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB configurations, while the Pro was listed with 12GB+256GB and 12GB+512GB. More memory can help when keeping many apps open; more storage matters if you record a lot of 4K video, keep large games installed or avoid cloud storage. Those benefits are configuration-dependent, not guaranteed simply by the model name in every country.
| India launch configuration (January 2025) | Launch price |
|---|---|
| Reno13, 8GB+128GB | INR 37,999 |
| Reno13, 8GB+256GB | INR 39,999 |
| Reno13 Pro, 12GB+256GB | INR 49,999 |
| Reno13 Pro, 12GB+512GB | INR 54,999 |
These are OPPO India launch prices from January 2025, not a current universal price. At the entry configurations listed above, the difference was INR 12,000, but the comparison is not perfectly like-for-like because the Pro entry also includes more RAM and storage. Street prices, promotions, taxes and regional bundles can change the calculation.
Reno12 pricing is not established in the cited material, so a current Reno12-versus-Pro price claim would require checking the market where you intend to buy. Do not transfer Reno13’s launch gap to another generation or country.

Which Reno should you buy?
Choose the standard Reno when
- You mainly use the main camera, ultra-wide camera and ordinary digital zoom.
- You want the same generation’s chipset and 80W charging without paying for telephoto hardware.
- You prefer the Reno13’s smaller flat design over a larger micro-curved display.
- You do not need the Pro’s starting memory or storage configuration.
- Your priorities are everyday apps, social video, charging and baseline durability rather than long-range photography.
Choose the Pro when
- You regularly shoot portraits, concerts, travel details or distant subjects where optical reach is valuable.
- You specifically want Reno12 Pro’s autofocus selfie camera or Victus 2 glass.
- You want Reno13 Pro’s 3.5x optical telephoto, larger display and higher starting memory/storage.
- The larger Reno13 battery is useful to your routine and the physical size is acceptable.
- The camera and materials justify the launch or street-price premium after a like-for-like storage comparison.
When the answer depends on the generation
Do not assume every Reno Pro follows the same formula. Reno12 keeps the display and battery shared and puts its premium in telephoto, selfie autofocus and glass. Reno13 adds a larger display, a larger battery, a 3.5x telephoto and different baseline configurations, while making the front-camera autofocus feature common to both models. The generation number is as important as the Pro label.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the exact generation and market. Confirm whether you are comparing Reno12 or Reno13, and open OPPO’s specification page for your country.
- Check the camera list, not just megapixels. Look specifically for a telephoto lens and its optical-zoom range. A higher main-camera megapixel count does not create optical reach.
- Verify front-camera focus. Reno12 Pro documents autofocus; Reno13 lists autofocus on both models.
- Compare the physical display. Reno13 has a size and curvature split; Reno12’s cited size and 120Hz OLED headline are shared.
- Match memory and storage before comparing prices. A cheaper standard model with less storage is not a direct price equivalent to a Pro configuration.
- Confirm protection claims and usage limits. Check the exact IP rating and OPPO’s conditions for underwater photography rather than relying on a retailer’s shortened description.
- Check what is actually in the box and supported locally. Charger availability, colors, storage tiers and software features can vary by region even when the family name is the same.
Common buying mistakes
Assuming “Pro” means a faster processor
That assumption is wrong for the documented Reno12 and Reno13 pairs. Both models in each generation use the same listed chipset. Pay for the Pro for its camera, display, materials, battery or configuration advantages, not an imagined processor upgrade.
Using the IP rating as a guarantee of damage-free water use
An IP code describes tested ingress protection under defined conditions. OPPO’s underwater-photography statement also has stated conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s limits and drying instructions; do not treat the rating as insurance against every liquid incident.

The Reno13 figures above are historical India launch prices from January 2025. Retail discounts and later availability can make a standard Reno and Pro much closer—or farther apart—than the launch table suggests.
Expecting every Pro-only feature to carry over
Reno12 Pro’s autofocus selfie camera is a good example. Reno13 gives autofocus to both models, so that particular reason to upgrade disappears in the newer generation. Always read the side-by-side specification for the exact model year.
Bottom-line decision
Buy the standard Reno if you want the core phone experience and do not regularly need optical zoom. Buy the Pro when telephoto portraits, distant-subject detail, premium glass, a larger display or higher baseline memory and storage have clear value in your routine. In Reno12, the premium is concentrated in telephoto, selfie autofocus and glass; in Reno13, it expands to telephoto, screen size, battery and launch configurations. The processor, 80W charging and documented protection remain shared within each generation, so those should not be the deciding factors.
