Buy the Samsung Galaxy A56 5G if you need a dependable phone now. Samsung has released it globally, publishes a six-year security-update promise for the 2025 Galaxy A family, and lists its key specifications and protection rating. The OPPO Reno17 is not yet an officially documented product as of 16 October 2026. Reports suggest an unusually large battery and ambitious cameras, but OPPO has not confirmed its specifications, launch countries, price, charging, durability rating or software support.

That makes this a comparison between a shipping phone and an upcoming one. The Reno17 may be worth waiting for if battery capacity or camera hardware matters more to you than a known purchase date and support policy. If you want a lower-cost Samsung option, compare the Galaxy A36 with the A56 using local prices; they belong to the same 2025 generation, but the A56 has the stronger processor and more capable camera setup.

Quick answer: which phone should you buy?

  • Need a phone immediately: Choose the Samsung Galaxy A56 5G. It is officially released, globally available from 28 March 2025, and covered by Samsung’s published six-year security-update commitment for the 2025 A-series.
  • Want the safest long-term ownership: Choose the A56 because its update policy, hardware and regional availability are documented. No equivalent Reno17 policy has been published.
  • Want to spend less within Samsung’s range: Check the Galaxy A36. It uses a less powerful Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 instead of the A56’s Exynos 1580, so the value depends on the price gap in your market.
  • Prioritise the largest possible battery or more elaborate cameras: Wait for the Reno17 announcement, but treat every current specification as provisional. Leaks are not a basis for a purchase decision.
  • Considering OPPO now: The Reno16 5G is the documented predecessor and can show what OPPO’s current upper-mid-range hardware looks like, but its specifications and price must not be presented as Reno17 specifications.

There is no independent benchmark, battery-runtime test or official Reno17 statement available in the evidence for this comparison. Performance and endurance conclusions therefore come from published specifications and support information, not laboratory testing.

Availability and price: a released A56 versus an unannounced Reno17

Galaxy A56 5G availability

Samsung Mobile Press recorded global availability for the Galaxy A56, A36 and A26 on 28 March 2025. That gives buyers a product name, retail channels and region-specific listings to check today. Samsung Electronics’ March 2025 launch material identifies the A56 as part of the same generation as the A36 and A26.

Tom’s Guide reported launch pricing of $499 in the United States, £499 in the United Kingdom and AU$699 in Australia for the A56. These are launch figures for those regions, not a universal current price. Retail promotions, storage configuration, taxes and local distribution can change what you actually pay, so verify the listing in your country before ordering.

Reno17 availability

As of 16 October 2026, OPPO has no official Reno17 product page in the available documentation. Gadgets 360 reported on 15 October 2026 that leaked information points to a battery exceeding 7,000mAh and a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor. Smartprix reported a possible early-January 2027 launch in India and an expected triple-50MP camera system. Those are reports about a possible future phone, not confirmed specifications.

Because OPPO has not published launch markets or pricing, there is no reliable way to calculate whether the Reno17 will undercut, match or exceed the A56. An India launch date would not establish availability in Europe, North America or other regions. Wait for OPPO’s own announcement before treating a date, price or specification as final.

Reno16 as a documented OPPO reference

The OPPO Reno16 5G is the useful comparison point while the Reno17 remains unconfirmed. OPPO’s India page lists a 2 July 2026 release, a starting India price of ₹66,999 for 8GB/256GB and ₹72,999 for 12GB/256GB as of 31 August 2026. Those figures describe the Reno16 in India only; they do not predict Reno17 pricing or international availability.

The Samsung figures in the first two rows come from Samsung Electronics’ March 2025 launch material. The Reno16 figures come from OPPO’s 2026 India product information. The Reno17 entries are explicitly marked as unconfirmed because OPPO has not published final specifications.

Software support: Samsung has the only published commitment

Samsung says the Galaxy A56, A36 and A26 receive six years of security updates. That is a concrete ownership advantage: you can assess how long security patches are intended to remain available before buying. The promise does not guarantee that every feature arrives on every model or that every market receives updates on the same day, but it is still a defined policy.

No Reno17 update period has been published. Until OPPO states the number of Android-version upgrades and security-update years for the Reno17, any claim that it will match Samsung would be speculation. The Reno16 product information cited here also does not establish an update duration, so it cannot fill that gap.

A larger battery is useful, but it does not compensate for an uncertain security-update horizon when the phone stores payment credentials, personal messages and work data.

Performance: what the chip names tell you—and what they do not

Galaxy A56 and A36

The A56 uses Samsung’s Exynos 1580, while the A36 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. The A56 therefore occupies the higher performance position within Samsung’s two models, but the available evidence does not include independent benchmark scores, sustained-load tests or gaming frame-rate measurements. Do not convert the processor names into a precise percentage advantage.

For everyday tasks such as messaging, navigation, photography and streaming, both are positioned as mid-range phones. The A56’s stronger platform is more relevant if you regularly edit photos, play demanding games, keep many applications open or want more headroom over a longer ownership period.

Reno16 and the Reno17 report

The Reno16 uses Snapdragon 7 Gen 4. Reports say the Reno17 may use the same chip, but OPPO has not confirmed that. If the report proves accurate, the Reno17 would at least share the Reno16’s stated platform; it would not automatically outperform the A56 because real performance also depends on cooling, software tuning, memory configuration and sustained power limits.

There is no published independent benchmark for any of these phones in the material available for this article. Choose on documented features and your workload rather than an unverified ranking.

Cameras: versatility is documented on Reno16, not yet on Reno17

What Samsung confirms

Samsung lists a 50MP main camera for both the A56 and A36. That establishes the main-camera resolution, not image quality in every lighting condition. Sensor size, image processing, stabilization and the supporting cameras determine results, and the cited launch material does not provide enough comparable detail to declare either Samsung model the overall camera winner.

What the Reno16 shows

OPPO’s Reno16 specification is more ambitious on paper: three 50MP rear cameras consisting of wide, ultrawide and 3.5x optical telephoto units. A real telephoto camera can preserve detail at portrait and distant framing better than digital cropping, but no controlled photo test is available here. The Reno16’s setup is evidence of OPPO’s design direction, not proof that the Reno17 will retain it.

What the Reno17 reports mean

Smartprix’s reported triple-50MP system could indicate a similar multi-camera approach, while Gadgets 360’s report mentions the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4. Neither report is an OPPO specification. Until the company publishes sensor details, lens roles, stabilization, video modes and regional configurations, it is not responsible to claim that Reno17 photos will beat the A56 or A36.

Battery and charging: the Reno16 is the benchmark, not proof of Reno17 endurance

Samsung’s 5,000mAh baseline

Samsung lists a 5,000mAh battery across the A56, A36 and A26. Samsung Electronics describes the capacity as designed for daily routines. The figure indicates capacity, not a guaranteed number of hours: display brightness, mobile-signal strength, gaming, camera use and background applications all change runtime.

Tom’s Guide reported 45W wired charging for the A56. The cited Samsung launch material does not establish a charging rate for the A36, so check the local specification sheet before assuming it matches the A56.

Reno16’s larger, faster package

OPPO lists a 6,700mAh typical battery and 80W SUPERVOOC charging for the Reno16. That is 1,700mAh more nominal capacity than the Samsung models and a substantially higher stated charging rate, but capacity and wattage alone cannot predict actual endurance or charging time. “Typical” is OPPO’s stated battery terminology and should not be confused with a guaranteed usable capacity under every condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reno17’s reported battery

The reported Reno17 battery exceeds 7,000mAh, but OPPO has not confirmed the number or charging system. Do not pay a premium today on the assumption that the rumor will become a shipping specification. Reassess once OPPO publishes capacity, charging wattage, charger inclusion and regional compatibility.

Displays and durability

Samsung’s screen and IP67 rating

The A56 and A36 use 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED displays. Samsung’s regional announcement gives a peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits. “Up to” describes a maximum claim under Samsung’s stated conditions, not a brightness level sustained across the entire panel or every mode.

Both phones carry IP67 protection. That rating indicates tested resistance to dust ingress and temporary immersion under the standard’s conditions; it is not a license to expose a phone to salt water, high-pressure jets or repeated underwater use.

Reno16’s higher stated protection

OPPO lists IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings for the Reno16. These designations cover different dust, water and high-pressure or high-temperature test conditions. They describe the Reno16, not the Reno17. You cannot transfer the predecessor’s rating to an unannounced successor.

No Reno17 display size, panel type, brightness or water-resistance rating has been officially stated. Those omissions matter if you are choosing between phones for outdoor readability, travel or demanding environments.

Is the Galaxy A36 a better value than the A56?

The A36 is the logical value alternative when local pricing makes the A56’s premium difficult to justify. Both share a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display, 5,000mAh battery, 50MP main camera, IP67 protection and six-year security-update promise in Samsung’s 2025 launch material. That common foundation means the A36 is not a cut-down phone in every respect.

The A56’s reasons to cost more are its Exynos 1580 processor and the model’s higher position in the range. Samsung’s launch material does not provide a directly comparable A36 charging figure, and it does not establish a second camera specification that would support a precise feature-by-feature score. Compare the actual prices for the same storage capacity, then ask whether faster processing and the A56’s broader feature set justify the difference for your use.

  • Choose A36 when the price gap is substantial and your use is mostly communication, streaming, web browsing and casual photography.
  • Choose A56 when you plan to keep the phone for years, play demanding games, edit media or want more performance headroom.
  • Do not choose A36 solely because the battery is larger; both models are listed at 5,000mAh.

How to decide before buying

  1. Set your deadline. If your current phone is failing or unsupported, buy the released A56 or A36 rather than waiting for an unannounced product.
  2. Check your country’s listing. Confirm storage, 5G bands, warranty terms, charger contents and return policy. Samsung’s launch prices from the US, UK and Australia are useful context, not a substitute for local pricing.
  3. Choose the support horizon. Samsung’s six-year security commitment is documented. Treat Reno17 support as unresolved until OPPO publishes it.
  4. Rank camera needs. A known 50MP main camera is available on both Samsung models. A telephoto-equipped system is documented on Reno16, while Reno17’s rumored triple-50MP setup still needs confirmation and testing.
  5. Rank charging needs. The A56’s reported 45W wired charging and the Reno16’s listed 80W SUPERVOOC provide reference points. Do not assume either figure applies to Reno17 or A36 without an official regional specification.
  6. Recheck the Reno17 only after launch. Require an OPPO product page with price, markets, chipset, battery, charging, cameras, protection and update policy before comparing it against the A56 on equal terms.

When waiting for Reno17 makes sense

Waiting is reasonable if your current phone remains secure and functional, you prefer a potentially very large battery, and you accept that the phone may launch later than the reported early-January 2027 India window—or may use different specifications entirely. Keep enough budget flexibility for a price that has not been announced, and do not sell your current phone before OPPO confirms availability in your country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Waiting is not sensible when you need a phone for work, travel or banking immediately, when update longevity is your top criterion, or when you cannot tolerate uncertain retail support. In those cases the A56’s documented availability and security policy have greater practical value than Reno17 rumors.

What to verify when OPPO announces Reno17

  • Official launch countries and release dates, not just an India report.
  • Final battery capacity, whether the figure is typical or rated, and the included charging equipment.
  • Processor model, memory and storage configurations.
  • Each camera’s sensor, lens, stabilization and video capabilities, followed by independent photo testing.
  • Display size, panel type, refresh rate and brightness conditions behind any peak figure.
  • IP rating and the exact test standard represented by that rating.
  • Android-version and security-update duration, including regional exceptions.
  • Complete price by storage tier, warranty coverage and after-sales support where you live.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy A56 5G is the best choice for most buyers today because it is a real, available product with documented hardware, IP67 protection and Samsung’s six-year security-update promise. The Galaxy A36 is the value alternative when its local price is meaningfully lower and you do not need the A56’s extra performance.

The OPPO Reno17 is a phone to monitor, not a phone to buy on leaked specifications. Its reported battery and camera advances could make it compelling, but the evidence does not yet establish its price, markets, hardware, durability or support. Re-run this comparison after OPPO publishes the official Reno17 details and independent testing is available.
