The “Operating System Not Found” message does not by itself mean Windows has been erased. First check whether BIOS/UEFI detects the internal drive and is trying to boot from it. If the drive is visible, use Windows recovery media and follow the repair steps for the disk’s partition style—MBR or GPT. If firmware cannot see the drive or diagnostics indicate a hardware fault, stop before changing partitions or boot files.

What “Operating System Not Found” means

At startup, the computer is failing to locate a bootable Windows installation. Possible causes include an incorrect boot selection, firmware that cannot detect the drive, physical drive damage, a corrupted Master Boot Record (MBR), or an inactive system partition. Microsoft documents separate recovery procedures for MBR and GPT disks in its Windows 10 guidance for this error; the exact steps are not universal across Windows versions or computer configurations.

Microsoft’s documented wording is: “An operating system wasn’t found. Try disconnecting any drives that don’t contain an operating system.” Similar wording, such as “computer can’t find operating system,” points to the same initial checks.

Check boot selection and drive detection first

  1. Disconnect unnecessary removable storage. Unplug external drives and USB devices that are not needed to start the computer.
  2. Open BIOS/UEFI setup. Restart and use the key specified by your computer’s manufacturer. The key and menu names vary by model; consult the device manual if needed.
  3. Confirm the internal drive appears. Look for the drive in the firmware’s storage or device list.
  4. Check the boot order. If the drive is detected, make the intended Windows boot device the selected boot option, then save and restart.

Microsoft support guidance recommends checking that the disk is detected and verifying boot order. If the drive is absent from firmware, Windows commands cannot fix that underlying detection problem.

If the drive is missing or may be failing

Stop before changing partition flags or rebuilding boot files if BIOS/UEFI does not show the internal drive, hardware diagnostics report failure, or the drive appears physically damaged. A failing drive may need hardware diagnosis or replacement; repeated repair attempts can complicate recovery of important files.

  • Prioritize recovering or backing up important data before attempts that write to the drive, where possible.
  • Use model-specific hardware guidance or a qualified repair service to confirm whether the drive has failed.
  • Consider a replacement SSD or HDD only after diagnosis confirms a fault. Compatibility depends on the computer’s form factor and interface.

If the drive appears: try Windows recovery tools

Start with Startup Repair when available

Boot into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, if that path is available in your version of Windows. Menu labels and availability can vary. Microsoft Q&A support guidance describes Startup Repair as an option that can diagnose and repair startup problems; it is worth trying before manual boot-file commands.

Open Command Prompt from Windows media

If Startup Repair does not resolve the problem, use bootable Windows installation or recovery media to reach Command Prompt. Microsoft’s exact-error instructions describe bootable Windows 7, 8, or 10 USB/DVD media for this purpose, while the documented MBR/GPT repair procedure applies to Windows 10. Choose repair tools rather than starting a clean installation. To create installation media, follow Microsoft’s Windows 10 download and installation media instructions using another working computer. A USB flash drive is only the medium for creating and booting the recovery media; the drive itself does not repair the affected PC.

Identify the disk style and Windows partition before commands

Do not assume Windows is on C: in the recovery environment. Drive letters can change there, and selecting the wrong disk or partition can make recovery harder. Microsoft’s instructions tell users to locate the Windows directory and distinguish the MBR and GPT procedures.

  1. From Command Prompt, use DiskPart and run list disk.
  2. Check the GPT column: an asterisk marks a GPT disk; if there is no asterisk, Microsoft’s instructions treat it as MBR.
  3. Identify the volume containing the Windows folder and the correct system partition. Confirm the disk and partitions carefully rather than relying on their usual drive letters.
  4. Follow Microsoft’s matching MBR or GPT procedure, then restart.
Disk style What to identify Repair distinction in Microsoft’s procedure
MBR The Windows directory and the appropriate system volume The procedure includes setting the appropriate system volume active and rebuilding boot files.
GPT The Windows directory and the System partition used for EFI boot files The procedure uses an EFI-specific boot-file process for the System partition.

These are different partition layouts and repair paths, not interchangeable command recipes. Do not apply MBR-specific instructions to a GPT/UEFI system or substitute a generic sequence of bootrec commands. Use Microsoft’s step-by-step instructions for the identified style and the correct partitions.

When to stop troubleshooting

If the drive remains undetected, diagnostics fail, or hardware damage is suspected, seek model-specific hardware diagnosis instead of repeating software boot repairs. If the disk is detected but the documented recovery path does not restore startup, a technician can assess the partition layout and drive condition before further changes. Keep data recovery as a priority whenever important files are not backed up.
