Choose Vivaldi if you want to control almost every part of the browser. Choose Opera if you prefer a more guided setup with a visible sidebar, integrated services, Workspaces, Tab Islands, vertical tabs, ad blocking, and VPN controls. Both are Chromium-based, so normal websites and Chrome-compatible extensions generally work in either; the important difference is how much of the browser you want to configure yourself.
The short answer
Vivaldi is the stronger starting point for people who treat the browser as a personal productivity environment. Its documented controls cover interface layout, colors, wallpapers, commands, panels, notes, tab stacks, tiling, sessions, workspaces, tracker blocking, and sync. You can rearrange the interface and build a workflow around the way you research, write, or manage projects.
Opera is the better starting point when you want useful organization without first exploring a deep settings tree. Its sidebar brings Workspaces and integrated services close to hand, while Tab Islands, vertical tabs, pinned tabs, ad blocking, and VPN controls are presented as a more curated package.
Recommended Free Tools
Neither browser has a universal win on speed, memory use, battery life, or extension performance. The available first-party material does not establish a controlled, current test that makes one the fastest or lightest in every configuration. Your choice should therefore follow your workflow, privacy expectations, and preferred level of customization rather than a generic performance ranking.

What both browsers have in common
Opera and Vivaldi are Chromium-based desktop browsers. That gives them a broadly similar foundation for modern websites and Chromium extensions. A site that works in one will usually work in the other, although individual extensions, browser settings, and built-in content blocking can still change how a page behaves.
Both document built-in blocking tools and VPN-related controls. These are convenience features, not a complete privacy strategy: a browser VPN does not automatically make every application on your device private, and a blocking list cannot replace sensible account security, software updates, and careful permission decisions.
Both also provide ways to organize browsing across devices, but their encryption descriptions are different. Vivaldi documents end-to-end encrypted synchronization. Opera documents an option to encrypt synchronized data with a passphrase chosen by the user. Check the current sync settings in the release you install before moving sensitive data or relying on a particular default.

How Vivaldi is built
Control over the interface
Vivaldi is designed around the idea that the browser should adapt to you. Its desktop feature documentation covers customizable interface layout, custom colors and wallpapers, panels, notes, browser commands, and extensive tab settings. This is useful when you want the address bar, tab bar, side panels, or status controls arranged for a particular task rather than left in a fixed layout.
Vivaldi describes itself as “the most customizable browser in the world.” That is the company’s positioning statement, not an independent industry ranking. The practical meaning is that more of the interface and workflow is exposed as a setting than you will find in a deliberately streamlined browser.
Tabs, workspaces, and sessions
For heavy multitasking, Vivaldi offers several layers of organization. Workspaces separate groups of open work; tab stacks group related pages; tiling lets you view multiple pages together; and sessions preserve a set of tabs for later use. Those tools solve different problems:
- Workspaces: keep contexts such as research, personal browsing, and client work separate.
- Tab stacks: group related tabs inside a workspace.
- Tab tiling: display selected pages side by side when you need to compare or reference them.
- Sessions: save a known collection of tabs so it can be reopened as a unit.
The advantage is depth: you can combine these tools instead of forcing every task into one tab strip. The trade-off is learning time. Vivaldi exposes enough choices that a new user may need to decide which organizational layer to use before the system feels natural.

Panels and notes
Vivaldi’s sidebar panels put tools such as notes beside the page rather than in a separate application window. That can be useful for collecting snippets, URLs, and reminders while researching. The notes feature is part of the browser’s documented desktop toolkit, so the workflow can stay in one window instead of relying on a separate text editor for every small reference.
Blocking and sync
Vivaldi documents a built-in ad blocker, tracker blocking, and Proton VPN integration. Proton VPN can be activated with a Vivaldi account; additional VPN features may require a paid upgrade, so the browser installation should not be treated as an all-inclusive subscription. Vivaldi also documents secure, end-to-end encrypted sync. Review what categories you enable and how account recovery works before syncing passwords, history, or open tabs.
Vivaldi’s homepage describes privacy as “a philosophy,” which is again a company statement rather than a guarantee that every configuration offers the same protection. Blocking lists, account choices, VPN terms, and the sites you visit all affect the result.
How Opera is built
A guided sidebar
Opera’s design emphasis is convenience. A sidebar keeps Workspaces, messaging and other integrated services visible, so common actions are easier to discover without searching through multiple settings pages. This makes Opera approachable when you want organization and extra services immediately available rather than a blank interface to configure from scratch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Workspaces, Tab Islands, and vertical tabs
Opera combines Workspaces with Tab Islands and vertical tabs. Tab Islands group related pages into a visual unit, while vertical tabs move the tab list into a side-oriented layout that can be easier to scan when titles are long. Opera’s customization documentation says vertical tabs work with Tab Islands, Workspaces, and pinned tabs, allowing those features to be used together.
This combination is particularly practical when many tabs are open but you do not want to design a complete personal system. A workspace can represent a project, an island can represent one task within it, and pinned tabs can remain available as fixed references. The organization is more discoverable than Vivaldi’s deeper collection of options, although users who want unusual layouts or command-level customization may find fewer choices.
Blocking, VPN controls, and sync
Opera’s help documentation lists a built-in ad blocker and VPN controls. “VPN” in this context means the browser’s own feature and terms; it should not be assumed to cover other applications or to provide the same jurisdiction, logging policy, locations, or subscription terms as a separate VPN service.

Opera also documents a passphrase option for encrypting synchronized data. If you use sync, inspect the current account and encryption settings rather than assuming that every category is protected in the same way by default. Opera’s documented import tools cover Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Yandex, and an HTML bookmarks file, which can shorten the move from another browser.

Which browser is more customizable?
Vivaldi is the clear choice if “customizable” means changing the browser’s structure and behavior. Its documented feature set reaches beyond themes and a few toolbar buttons: you can work with panels, notes, commands, tab arrangements, sessions, colors, wallpapers, and several levels of tab organization. The cost is that you must make more decisions and remember where those decisions live.
Opera is customizable in a more curated sense. You can choose how to use Workspaces, Tab Islands, vertical tabs, pinned tabs, the sidebar, and integrated services, but the experience is designed to remain coherent with relatively little setup. Choose Opera when you want a useful set of choices; choose Vivaldi when you want to define the system.
Which is better for tab management?
Choose Opera for quick organization
Opera is a good fit when the main problem is a crowded tab bar and you want a recognizable solution immediately. Start with a workspace for each broad context, group related pages into Tab Islands, and enable vertical tabs if horizontal titles become difficult to scan. Keep stable references as pinned tabs.
- Create or switch to a Workspace for the project or context you are handling.
- Group pages that belong to one task in a Tab Island.
- Use vertical tabs when the browser window contains many long page titles.
- Pin pages you need in every session, such as a calendar or documentation portal.
Choose Vivaldi for a system you can expand
Vivaldi is better when tab management is part of a larger research or production workflow. Use Workspaces for broad contexts, tab stacks for related pages, tiling for side-by-side comparison, and Sessions for a reusable set of tabs. Its notes and panels can keep supporting material close to the pages being studied.
- Create a Workspace for each durable context, such as a project or subject area.
- Place closely related pages in a tab stack so they remain grouped.
- Tile selected tabs when you need to compare two or more pages at once.
- Save a Session when a group of tabs will be useful again.
- Use a sidebar note for temporary excerpts, links, or follow-up tasks.
The decision is not simply “which browser has more tab features.” Opera minimizes setup; Vivaldi gives you more combinations and therefore more responsibility for designing a system that stays understandable.
Privacy, blocking, and VPN controls
Both browsers document ad or tracker blocking and a VPN-related feature, but those labels do not answer every privacy question. A browser VPN may have different coverage and terms from a device-wide VPN. Blocking behavior depends on lists and site exceptions. Sync adds another decision: data stored on an account has different implications from data kept only on the device.

Vivaldi’s approach
Vivaldi integrates Proton VPN and says it can be activated with a Vivaldi account. Some additional features may require a paid upgrade. Vivaldi also documents tracker blocking, ad blocking, and end-to-end encrypted sync. If you want broad controls in one browser and are willing to review settings carefully, this is the more expansive documented package.
Opera’s approach
Opera provides built-in VPN controls and an ad blocker, with those controls surfaced as part of its convenience-focused browser experience. Opera also documents passphrase encryption for synchronized data. This can be attractive if you want privacy-related switches that are easy to find, but you should still read the current service terms and choose a passphrase you can retain securely.
What neither claim proves
Neither browser can be called universally safer from the information available here. Safety depends on update status, extensions, passwords, account recovery, site permissions, phishing awareness, blocking configuration, VPN policy, and whether sync is enabled. No current first-party evidence establishes that one is always more private, faster, or lighter in every configuration.
Syncing tabs, passwords, and settings between phone and desktop
Both browsers document synchronization features, but the exact categories and mobile support can change with releases. Before enabling sync, install the current desktop and mobile versions, sign in to the same browser account where required, and inspect the category list shown in the sync settings.
- Open the browser’s account or sync settings on the desktop installation.
- Sign in or create the browser account requested by the current setup.
- Review categories such as bookmarks, history, open tabs, passwords, and settings.
- Choose the encryption or passphrase option offered by that browser.
- Repeat the sign-in on the phone and verify that the expected categories appear.
- Test with a non-critical bookmark or tab before relying on the setup for important work.
Vivaldi documents end-to-end encrypted sync. Opera documents passphrase encryption for synchronized data. Those descriptions are not identical, so compare the current settings screens if encryption design is a deciding factor. Do not assume that a password stored in one browser can be read by the other simply because both support Chromium extensions; migration and sync are separate functions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Moving from another browser
Opera has explicit import documentation for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Yandex, and bookmarks saved as an HTML file. That makes it the more clearly documented choice for a user who wants a defined migration path.

Customization trade-offs in daily use
| Situation | Vivaldi experience | Opera experience |
|---|---|---|
| You want a personal layout | Many documented layout, color, panel, wallpaper, and command choices. | Practical controls centered on the sidebar, tabs, workspaces, and integrated services. |
| You are new to browser customization | Powerful, but the number of settings can require exploration. | More guided because prominent features are visible in the main interface. |
| You regularly compare pages | Tab tiling and panels support a deliberate research layout. | Tab Islands and vertical tabs organize pages, but the approach is more curated. |
| You reopen recurring projects | Sessions and workspaces provide separate ways to preserve context. | Workspaces and Tab Islands provide a simpler recurring organization pattern. |
| You need notes beside pages | Notes are documented as a sidebar feature. | Use the integrated services and ordinary tabs available in the current build. |
How to choose in five minutes
- Pick Vivaldi if you want to move browser controls, create a multi-level tab system, tile pages, save sessions, use sidebar notes, and tune colors or commands.
- Pick Opera if you want Workspaces, Tab Islands, vertical tabs, pinned tabs, a visible sidebar, and integrated services with little initial design work.
- Pick Vivaldi if end-to-end encrypted sync is a stated requirement in the current documentation you are evaluating.
- Pick Opera if importing from Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Yandex, or an HTML bookmark file is central to the move.
- Try both briefly if performance is your main concern. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner for speed, memory, battery, or extension performance.
Common problems and fixes
“My tabs are still hard to find.”
In Opera, use one Workspace per broad context before adding more Tab Islands; too many overlapping groups can recreate the original clutter. In Vivaldi, decide whether a group belongs in a Workspace, a tab stack, or a saved Session. Assigning each layer one job prevents a deep hierarchy from becoming as confusing as an unorganized tab bar.
“A site looks different after I enable blocking.”
Temporarily review the site’s blocking controls and add an exception only if you trust the site and need the blocked resource. A page can depend on advertising or tracking-related scripts for functions that are unrelated to advertising, so test the page’s essential actions after changing the setting.
“Sync did not bring everything to my phone.”
Check that both devices use the same account, that the desired category is enabled, and that the phone has completed its first synchronization. Open-tab sync, passwords, history, and settings may be separate categories. If a passphrase or end-to-end encryption option is enabled, confirm that the receiving device has the required credentials.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“The browser feels overwhelming.”
Start with the default layout and change one feature at a time. Opera is usually the gentler first choice for guided customization. In Vivaldi, begin with one Workspace and one tab organization method, then add panels, notes, tiling, or sessions only when a real task needs them.
Verdict
Vivaldi is the best choice for maximum control: interface layout, themes, panels, notes, commands, workspaces, tab stacks, tiling, sessions, blocking, and sync are all part of its documented toolkit. Opera is the better choice for a curated experience that puts Workspaces, Tab Islands, vertical tabs, pinned tabs, sidebar services, ad blocking, and VPN controls within easy reach.
Start with Vivaldi if customizing the browser is itself part of the appeal. Start with Opera if you want the browser to organize common tasks for you. In either case, review the current sync, VPN, blocking, and account settings after installation; those details can change between releases and may differ by platform or service plan.
