If Opera became sluggish or started consuming noticeably more RAM after a refresh, begin with the update check and a full relaunch. Then isolate extensions, close unnecessary tabs, clear cached files, and test Opera’s graphics-acceleration setting. If those steps do not help, use Update & Recovery and choose the reset that keeps your personal data.

There is no authoritative current number for how much memory an Opera refresh should add, so a useful diagnosis compares Opera with the same tabs and workload before and after each change rather than chasing a universal RAM target.

What “slow after the refresh” usually means

A refresh can mean an automatic browser update, a relaunch after an update, or simply reopening a session with the same large set of tabs. Opera says that it automatically downloads an update when one becomes available. (Opera Help: crashes and issues) The update itself may not be the only change you notice. Extensions may need to be reloaded, pages may resume background work, and the graphics path used for scrolling or video can behave differently on a particular computer.

High memory use is also workload-dependent. A browser with many active tabs, web applications, video pages, or extensions can use more RAM than a clean window. The useful question is therefore not “How many gigabytes should Opera use?” but “Which tab, extension, setting, or temporary data is responsible on this machine?”

Use the fixes below in order. The early steps are reversible and identify a cause; the final step resets Opera settings without immediately deleting your personal browsing data.

Choose the least destructive test first

Action What it tests or changes Reversibility and side effects
Check for an update and relaunch Confirms the installed version and completes any pending update Low impact; open pages may need to be restored after relaunch
Disable one extension Tests whether a particular add-on is consuming resources or interfering with pages Highly reversible; the extension’s features stop while disabled
Close tabs and clear cached files Reduces active work and removes temporary website data Closing tabs can discard unsaved page state; clearing cookies or site data can sign you out
Toggle graphics acceleration Tests the GPU-rendering path used by scrolling, video, and compositing Reversible after a restart; the better state varies by computer
Recover with “Keep my data” Resets Opera settings, disables extensions, and clears temporary data More disruptive, but bookmarks, history, and saved passwords are retained

1. Confirm Opera’s update state and restart it

Do this before changing extensions or deleting data. You need to know which Opera version you are testing, and a pending update may not take effect until the browser relaunches.

  1. Open the O Menu.
  2. Select Update & Recovery.
  3. Choose Check for Update.
  4. Install the update if Opera offers one, then relaunch when prompted.
  5. Record the version displayed on the Update & Recovery page. Compare performance only after the same version is running.

Opera’s wording is explicit: “Your Opera browser will automatically download an update when one becomes available.” (Opera Help, update and recovery documentation) Automatic downloading does not necessarily mean that the browser has already restarted into the new version, so the relaunch matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After restarting, test a repeatable workload: open the same few sites, play the same type of video if video was part of the problem, and wait long enough for the pages to settle. If the slowdown disappears, no reset is needed. If it returns, continue with resource isolation.

2. Find the tab or extension using the resources

Check for a single heavy tab or page

Opera provides a task-management view where available. Open it and look for a tab, page, or extension that is consuming substantially more CPU or memory than the others. A single web application left running in the background can make the whole browser feel slow even when other tabs are normal.

  • Close the tab if you do not need it.
  • Save work first if the page contains an editor, form, upload, or unsent message.
  • Reopen the page later in a new tab to see whether the problem returns.

If closing one tab immediately restores responsiveness, the evidence points to that page or its web content rather than to Opera’s global settings. Keep the page closed while testing the remaining steps so it cannot obscure the result.

Disable extensions without uninstalling them

Open Opera’s extensions manager from the extensions icon, or use Ctrl+Shift+E on Windows or Linux and Command+Shift+E on macOS. Opera documents the manager and its Disable control in its FAQ. (Opera FAQ)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the extensions manager.
  2. Review the enabled extensions and note which ones affect every page, monitor content, rewrite text, block elements, or add a sidebar or toolbar.
  3. Disable one suspect extension.
  4. Relaunch or reload the problem pages and repeat the same workload.
  5. If Opera improves, leave that extension disabled and test it again later after checking whether an update is available.

For a clean diagnosis, re-enable extensions one at a time after Opera is stable. If the slowdown returns immediately after one extension is enabled, you have isolated a likely contributor. This is a diagnostic use of Opera’s documented controls, not a claim that every extension causes high memory use.

Do not disable every extension at once if you need to identify a culprit; doing so proves only that one of the extensions, or their combined workload, matters. If you already disabled several, re-enable them individually so the test remains interpretable.

3. Reduce active work before clearing data

Close unused tabs and windows

Opera’s speed guidance recommends closing unused tabs, removing extensions you no longer use, clearing browsing data, and keeping the browser up to date. (Opera FAQ) Start with tabs because this is the least invasive cleanup: close pages you are not actively using, especially dashboards, mail clients, document editors, streams, and pages that refresh automatically.

Keep a small test window open with only the pages needed to reproduce the issue. If that window is fast while the original session is slow, add tabs back in groups and watch for the one that changes the behavior. This approach separates “Opera is slow with any page” from “one session contains too much active work.”

Clear cached images and files first

Use Opera’s Clear browsing data control and begin with cached images and files. Cached content is temporary website data; Opera explains that emptying it can free local disk space. (Opera Help: be safe and private) Clearing the cache can also force sites to download fresh copies of scripts and images, which is useful when an old cached asset conflicts with a newly updated page.

Cache clearing is different from deleting your browsing history, cookies, or saved passwords. Select only cached files for the first test. If you later clear cookies or other site data, expect possible sign-outs and resets of site preferences.

Understand hosted-app data before selecting it

Opera’s documentation warns that clearing hosted-app data can reset data belonging to installed extensions. (Opera Help: be safe and private) That option can remove a troublesome extension’s stored state, but it can also erase settings or local data you intended to keep. Treat it as a separate, more disruptive step:

  • Use cached-files clearing for a normal first pass.
  • Use hosted-app or broader site-data clearing only when you accept that extension data and website state may be reset.
  • Expect cookies and site data to cause sign-outs; make sure you know the credentials or recovery method for important accounts first.

4. Test hardware acceleration in System settings

Graphics acceleration can improve some workloads and worsen others, depending on the operating system, graphics driver, monitor setup, and the pages you use. Opera’s FAQ specifically recommends trying either state for Use graphics acceleration when available. (Opera FAQ) There is no universal “on is faster” or “off is safer” answer established by that guidance.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Browser and then System.
  3. Find Use graphics acceleration when available.
  4. Note its current state, then switch it.
  5. Restart Opera.
  6. Repeat the same workload and compare scrolling, video playback, page responsiveness, and resource use.

Keep the setting that is more stable on your computer. If acceleration is enabled and you see flickering, stuttering video, high fan activity, or sluggish scrolling, test it disabled. If it is disabled and graphics-heavy pages remain slow, test it enabled instead. Change only this setting during the test so you can attribute the result.

A restart is part of the test: changing the checkbox without relaunching may leave existing browser processes using the previous graphics path.

5. Recover Opera while keeping personal data

If updating, isolating extensions, reducing tabs, clearing temporary files, and testing acceleration do not solve the problem, use Opera’s built-in recovery option before reinstalling.

  1. Open the O Menu on Windows or Linux. On macOS, open the Opera menu.
  2. Select Update & Recovery.
  3. Choose Recover.
  4. Select Keep my data and only reset Opera settings.
  5. Review the effects and confirm the recovery, then relaunch Opera.

Opera says this recovery choice resets settings, disables extensions, and clears temporary data while retaining bookmarks, history, and saved passwords. (Opera Help: crashes and issues) Because extensions are disabled, recovery is also a useful way to determine whether the problem is caused by an extension or by a browser setting. Re-enable extensions cautiously and one at a time after confirming that the clean profile behaves normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recovery changes more than the earlier tests. Write down custom search, privacy, appearance, startup, or site-permission settings you will need to restore. If the problem is caused by a particular extension, reinstalling or re-enabling it immediately after recovery can bring the symptom back.

When a reinstall is justified

Reinstalling should be the last escalation in this sequence, not the first response to a high-memory reading. Preserve any profile data you need before removing Opera, and verify that bookmarks, saved passwords, and other important information are available through your chosen backup or synchronization method. A reinstall can remove the local condition, but it will not fix a problematic page or extension that you restore unchanged.

If Opera remains slow after a clean recovery with extensions disabled and a small, repeatable set of tabs, document the exact version, operating system, affected pages, acceleration state, and what changed after each step. That record distinguishes a browser-wide issue from a workload-specific one and gives support a reproducible case.

A practical decision tree

Opera is slow only with one page open

Close that page, reopen it without extensions if possible, and observe whether its behavior returns. Keep other tabs closed while testing. The page or its content is the primary suspect; a global reset is unlikely to be the first useful move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opera improves when one extension is disabled

Leave the extension disabled, check for an update from its developer, and re-enable it only for a controlled test. If the symptom returns, use an alternative workflow or remove the extension rather than repeatedly resetting Opera.

Every page is slow after a pending update

Complete Check for Update, relaunch, and record the resulting version. Then test with extensions disabled and a small tab set. This separates an incomplete update from a setting or workload problem.

Video and scrolling are the main symptoms

Test Use graphics acceleration when available in both states, restarting between tests. Keep the state that gives stable playback and scrolling on that computer; do not generalize the result to every machine.

Memory remains high after tabs and extensions are controlled

Clear cached files, compare the same workload after a relaunch, and use Keep my data and only reset Opera settings if the issue persists. Recovery is the point at which settings, disabled extensions, and temporary data are reset together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to judge whether a fix worked

  • Test the same Opera version after a full relaunch.
  • Use the same tabs and activity, or deliberately use a minimal test window.
  • Change one major variable at a time.
  • Watch for practical outcomes: typing delay, tab switching, scrolling, video stability, fan activity, and whether the browser stops responding.
  • Record which extension, tab, cache state, acceleration state, or recovery option changed the result.

No authoritative current figure establishes a typical memory increase caused by an Opera refresh, so a number alone is not a diagnosis. A reproducible change—such as one extension consistently causing the slowdown, or acceleration consistently improving video—provides stronger evidence than comparing Opera’s RAM use with an arbitrary target.
