If your team owns an application and can change its code, you can evaluate OpenZiti’s language-specific SDK to integrate zero-trust networking inside the app. For software that cannot or should not be refactored, OpenZiti also documents tunnelers that connect existing applications to its overlay. The right choice depends chiefly on where you can make the integration: in the application, on its host, or at the network layer.

What embedding OpenZiti in an application means

Embedding means integrating an OpenZiti Edge SDK into application code. OpenZiti describes this model as putting identity and encryption in the application itself; that is the project’s description of its architecture, not an independent security assessment. Its introduction describes a zero-trust overlay mesh built from a controller, edge routers, and fabric routers, and names principles including authorize-before-connect, continual authorization, and least-privilege access. OpenZiti’s introduction explains the project’s architecture and stated principles.

The project says SDK users need not specify or care about ports and IP addresses. That does not remove the need to plan the application integration or its operation. The claim is specifically about the SDK experience described on OpenZiti’s features page.

Choose the integration boundary

OpenZiti documents several ways to connect services. The key practical question is whether you can change the application, and where you want OpenZiti integration to sit.

Approach Where integration happens When to consider it
Edge SDK Inside the application When your team controls the application and can refactor it to use an SDK.
Tunneler On the host running the application When you need to connect existing software without changing its code.
SDK-based proxy In a proxy service When direct SDK embedding is not a suitable fit; consult the documentation for implementation details.
Router-based network access At the network layer When network access is the chosen integration boundary rather than modifying each application.

OpenZiti’s services overview describes these service access models and notes that embedding requires refactoring an application to use an Edge SDK. Its services quickstarts distinguish zero-trust application access from zero-trust host access. These descriptions do not establish that one approach is faster or more secure than another.

How to start an SDK integration

  1. Confirm that the application can be changed. SDK embedding puts the integration in application code, so determine whether your team can refactor and maintain the relevant application.
  2. Choose the SDK for the application’s language. OpenZiti’s services quickstart directs developers to choose a language SDK and explore its samples. Setup differs by language, so follow that SDK’s current instructions rather than assuming a universal procedure.
  3. Use the language-specific project entry point. The C SDK repository points developers toward adding the project to a CMake build. The Node.js SDK repository describes application and web-server integration and includes an Express example.
  4. Work through the SDK samples and service documentation. Use the relevant SDK sample alongside the OpenZiti services quickstart to understand the application-access route for your implementation.

The C and Node.js examples are language-specific starting points, not evidence that every SDK has identical setup, capabilities, or maintenance status.

When a tunneler is a better fit

If an application is fixed, legacy, or otherwise should not be changed, a tunneler can bridge it to OpenZiti’s overlay. OpenZiti says tunnelers intercept traffic for Ziti services and forward it over the overlay. They also configure operating-system service-name resolution and routes, which are updated as relevant policy changes. See the tunneler documentation for details.

This keeps the integration outside the application, on its host. It is therefore a different implementation boundary from using an SDK in the app, not a drop-in claim about equivalent behavior or operational effort.

What to establish before choosing

  • Code ownership: Can your team refactor the application and carry the SDK integration forward?
  • Integration location: Is the right boundary the application, its host, a proxy, or the network?
  • Language-specific instructions: Does the relevant SDK provide the setup guidance and samples your application needs?
  • Operational responsibilities: For a tunneler, account for host-level traffic interception, service-name resolution, and policy-driven route updates.

The official sources describe OpenZiti’s architecture and capabilities; they do not establish independent performance gains, quantified security outcomes, or adoption levels.
