Choose KVM for most general-purpose VPS deployments. KVM gives you an independent guest kernel, broader operating-system compatibility, support for custom kernel modules, and a stronger virtualization boundary. Choose OpenVZ when your workload is Linux-compatible with the provider’s host kernel and your priorities are high container density, low virtualization overhead, and fast container management. The virtualization label is only one part of the decision: guaranteed resources, oversubscription, storage, backups, support, and migration tooling can matter more than OpenVZ versus KVM.
For a self-managed Linux VPS, Antihost VPS offers full root access on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage in the USA East, Netherlands, and Ukraine.
OpenVZ and KVM in one sentence
OpenVZ is operating-system-level virtualization: multiple isolated containers share the host’s Linux kernel. KVM is hardware-assisted virtualization: each virtual machine runs its own complete guest operating system and kernel, generally through the Linux KVM interface with a userspace component such as QEMU.

That architectural difference determines what you can install, how isolation works, how much virtualization overhead is introduced, and which migration methods are available. It does not, by itself, tell you which provider or plan will be faster. A well-operated KVM host can outperform an oversubscribed OpenVZ node, while a carefully managed OpenVZ cluster can deliver excellent performance for compatible workloads.

How the two virtualization models work
OpenVZ: containers sharing one kernel
OpenVZ creates isolated execution environments, often called containers or virtual environments, inside a single Linux kernel. Each container can have its own filesystem, processes, users, network configuration, and resource limits. Different Linux distributions can run in separate containers, but all of them still use the host kernel.
The shared-kernel model removes the need to emulate or virtualize a complete hardware platform for every tenant. The container sees a Linux userland, while the host kernel performs scheduling, memory management, system calls, and device access for all containers. Namespaces separate process, mount, network, IPC, and other views; cgroups account for and limit CPU, memory, storage, and other resources.
This model is efficient, but the host kernel is also a hard compatibility boundary. A container cannot load a kernel module that the host does not provide, change fundamental kernel settings outside its permitted controls, or boot an unrelated operating system kernel.
KVM: a virtual machine with its own kernel
KVM exposes Linux’s hardware-virtualization interface through /dev/kvm and its ioctl API. A KVM virtual machine receives virtual CPUs, memory, disks, network devices, firmware, and other hardware interfaces. The guest operating system boots its own kernel and manages its own userland independently of the host’s distribution.
QEMU or a comparable userspace component supplies the virtual machine’s device model and emulation where needed, while hardware extensions such as Intel VT-x or AMD-V accelerate execution on supported processors. The guest can therefore run a kernel version, module set, and operating system that differ substantially from the host, subject to the provider’s image and hardware policies.

KVM still shares physical hardware with neighboring VMs, and a provider may oversubscribe CPU, memory, storage I/O, or network capacity. “Dedicated kernel” does not mean “dedicated physical server.” Ask how the plan’s resources are reserved and measured.
OpenVZ vs KVM: the practical differences
| Decision area | OpenVZ | KVM |
|---|---|---|
| Kernel | Shares the host Linux kernel; no independent guest kernel. | Runs an independent guest kernel inside a virtual machine. |
| Operating systems | Linux userlands that work with the host kernel and container templates. | Broader guest-OS choice, including systems that require their own kernel, subject to provider support. |
| Kernel modules | Limited to modules and capabilities exposed by the host. | Can use guest-compatible modules and kernel configuration. |
| Virtualization overhead | Very low for compatible workloads; OpenVZ documentation reports about 1–2% CPU resources for its virtualization layer. | Additional VM memory, device, and management work; no universal overhead figure applies to every setup. |
| Isolation boundary | Namespaces, cgroups, and related kernel controls inside one host kernel. | Container-style controls plus a hardware-virtualized VM boundary and separate guest kernel. |
| Density | Often supports more lightweight environments per host when workloads are compatible. | Usually consumes more memory and management overhead per guest. |
| Migration | Can use container migration mechanisms and documented live-migration workflows when topology and storage requirements are met. | Can migrate VM disks and memory using the provider’s hypervisor and storage tooling; exact requirements vary. |
| Best fit | Linux services that need efficient, fast-to-provision isolation and do not need kernel control. | General-purpose servers, custom kernels, kernel modules, diverse operating systems, and stronger guest separation. |
The OpenVZ 1–2% figure is a statement about the virtualization layer in OpenVZ’s feature documentation, not a universal benchmark against every KVM configuration. Hardware generation, storage, workload, kernel settings, and host contention can outweigh the virtualization layer itself.

Which is faster: OpenVZ or KVM?
For a compatible Linux workload, OpenVZ can have an efficiency advantage because it avoids a separate guest kernel and much of the device virtualization work. OpenVZ describes its single-kernel implementation as near-zero overhead and reports approximately 1–2% of CPU resources spent on the virtualization layer. That can help a provider achieve high container density and fast startup times.
KVM introduces a virtual-machine boundary. The guest needs memory for its own kernel and services, and virtual disks, network cards, timers, and other devices require additional handling. Modern hardware acceleration and paravirtualized devices can make this overhead modest, but the amount depends on the configuration.
There is no authoritative, dated cross-platform benchmark that establishes one universal winner. Compare the performance characteristics that affect your workload:

For a small web server, reverse proxy, DNS service, or development environment that uses a supported Linux userland, OpenVZ’s density may be attractive. For a database with strict latency requirements, a custom networking stack, or a workload affected by storage contention, the provider’s guarantees and host design matter more than the label.

When OpenVZ is sufficient
OpenVZ is suitable when your application runs in user space and does not depend on changing the kernel. Typical examples include web applications, application runtimes, queues, monitoring agents, and other Linux services that work with the provider’s kernel and container feature set.
You can usually select among supported Linux distributions or templates, install packages, configure services, and manage users inside the container. Those distributions are userlands, not independently booted kernels. A distribution that normally ships its own kernel still uses the host kernel in an OpenVZ container.
When KVM is required
Choose KVM if any of these requirements apply:
- You need to boot a specific kernel version or maintain your own kernel build.
- You must load a kernel module that the host does not expose.
- You rely on low-level firewall, networking, filesystem, virtualization, or hardware features controlled by the kernel.
- You need an operating system that cannot run on the provider’s Linux kernel.
- You want to test kernel upgrades, boot parameters, or recovery procedures without changing the host kernel shared by other tenants.
KVM does not guarantee that every operating system is supported. Check the provider’s image catalog, firmware mode, virtual-device support, licensing rules, and console access before ordering. Some providers allow custom ISO uploads; others restrict images to their templates.
Isolation and security: what changes between them?
OpenVZ isolates filesystems, processes, IPC objects, network views, and selected system controls with namespaces, cgroups, and related kernel mechanisms. A properly configured container should not see or control neighboring containers. The security boundary is nevertheless implemented by one shared kernel.

KVM adds a virtual-machine boundary and a separate guest kernel. A vulnerability or misconfiguration in the guest generally does not provide the same direct kernel-sharing path that exists between containers. This makes KVM the practical choice when your threat model requires stronger separation or when tenants run mutually untrusted software.
Neither technology is automatically secure. Security also depends on:
- Host and guest patch cadence, including emergency kernel updates.
- Container privilege settings, capabilities, device exposure, and control-panel defaults.
- Image provenance, signed packages, and the process used to build templates.
- Network segmentation, firewall rules, DDoS handling, and management-plane access.
- Backup encryption, retention, restore testing, and who can access snapshots.
- Provider monitoring, incident response, and separation of customer and administrative credentials.
Ask the provider which container capabilities are enabled, whether unprivileged containers are available, how host-kernel CVEs are handled, and what evidence exists for backup restoration. Treat “isolated” as a description of the technology, not as a security certification.

OpenVZ migration
OpenVZ documents live migration for virtual machines and containers. A typical workflow copies memory and disks, briefly suspends the source, transfers changed memory pages and storage blocks, then resumes the workload on the destination. The exact command sequence depends on the OpenVZ release, storage backend, and orchestration layer.

- A network capable of at least 1 Gbps of data transfer.
- Source and destination hosts on the same subnet.
- CPUs from the same vendor with sufficient compatible capabilities.
- A supported storage layout and access to the required disks or volumes.
Container migration documentation also describes CRIU and P.Haul as migration components, with cgroups and namespaces providing the current resource-isolation mechanisms. A provider may impose stricter requirements, disable live migration for certain plans, or use shared storage rather than copying disks.
KVM migration
KVM migration normally transfers a VM’s memory state while the source continues running, followed by a short pause to copy the final changes and switch execution to the destination. Whether this is possible depends on CPU feature compatibility, virtual hardware versions, storage availability, network capacity, and the provider’s orchestration system.
Before assuming that a plan is portable, ask:
- Can you export the VM disk in a standard format such as raw or QCOW2?
- Can you download an image or attach your own ISO?
- Are snapshots crash-consistent or application-consistent?
- Does migration require the same provider, region, subnet, or storage class?
- What downtime is expected if live migration fails?
- Can you restore the image on another KVM platform?
Migration is an operational capability, not an automatic property of virtualization. Test a restore and document the cutover procedure before an incident forces you to use it.

- List non-negotiable technical requirements. Record the operating system, kernel version, modules, filesystem features, virtualization needs, device access, and licensing constraints. Any requirement for an independent kernel points to KVM.
- Classify the workload. A stateless web tier or development container can tolerate a different failure and migration model than a latency-sensitive database, VPN gateway, storage service, or security appliance.
- Define the isolation requirement. Decide whether shared-kernel container isolation is acceptable for your users, data, and compliance obligations. If not, use KVM or dedicated hardware.
- Compare guaranteed resources. Look for explicit CPU shares or cores, RAM limits, storage IOPS, network throughput, and oversubscription disclosures. “Virtual CPU” and “SSD storage” alone are not guarantees.
- Verify the image and management path. Confirm templates, custom ISO support, serial or virtual console access, rescue mode, snapshots, API features, and reset procedures.
- Check backup and migration terms. Ask how often backups run, how long they are retained, where they are stored, how restores are tested, and what migration topology is supported.
- Run a representative trial. Measure application latency, disk performance, network behavior, memory pressure, and reboot or restore time under realistic load. Do not generalize a short synthetic test to every workload.
Workload examples
Choose OpenVZ for a dense Linux service fleet
You operate many small, compatible Linux services, need rapid provisioning, and do not require custom kernels or modules. OpenVZ can reduce per-instance overhead and make it practical to place more services on a host. Confirm that the provider exposes the kernel features your applications need and publishes enforceable resource limits.
Choose KVM for a custom-kernel appliance
You are deploying a VPN, storage, observability, networking, or security appliance that requires a particular kernel or module. KVM lets the guest boot and manage that kernel independently. Confirm virtual NIC, disk, clock, firmware, and console support before deployment.
Choose KVM for mixed operating systems
Your environment includes Linux distributions with different kernel requirements or a non-Linux guest. A full VM model is the practical option because each guest can boot its own operating system. Check the provider’s licensing and image policies, since virtualization capability does not automatically include operating-system support.
Choose based on operations when requirements are flexible
If either technology satisfies the application, compare the provider’s node quality, storage, backups, support response, maintenance history, and migration process. A reliable OpenVZ plan with clear limits can be a better production choice than a poorly managed KVM plan, and the reverse is equally possible.

- Which CPU, memory, storage, and network resources are guaranteed, and which are shared?
- What oversubscription limits apply, and how are noisy neighbors handled?
- For OpenVZ, which host-kernel version and container capabilities are used?
- For KVM, which CPU features, virtual devices, firmware modes, and custom images are supported?
- Are snapshots included, and are they independent backups or temporary point-in-time copies?
- How is a full restore tested, and can you request a restore drill?
- Is live migration available, and what downtime, subnet, CPU, storage, and bandwidth requirements apply?
- Can you export your data and disks in a documented format if you leave?
- What happens during host maintenance, hardware failure, or a storage outage?
Bottom-line decision
Pick KVM when kernel independence, custom modules, broad guest-OS support, or a stronger VM boundary matters. Pick OpenVZ when a supported Linux userland is all you need and low overhead, high density, and quick container operations are the priority. If both meet the technical requirements, select the provider with the clearest resource guarantees, strongest backup and restore practice, suitable storage, responsive support, and a migration path you have verified.
